Reactionary Content

Everyone likes to make content be it YouTube videos, Instagram photos, newspaper columns, books etc. that stirs people. However, the problem is not just making great content. It is also stirring people enough to react to by commenting, sharing or spreading the word around.

Why are only some columnists famous? Why only some authors sell gazillion copies of their books? Because people react to their content. Now, content marketers can afford to do A/B testing with their "content", but artists cannot. Artist has only shot at publishing his/her content.

As a member of audience, there are certain things that have produced a reaction, other not. In my view, I think it is possible to make content that stirs people. If you are a creator or an entrepreneur and your content (or your creations) makes you react in following ways, then it will probably work on the rest of us too:

#1 Didn't know that - your content in this case is basically informing your audience about something effectively.

#2 Never looked it that way - audience is allowed to think about something with a new set of eyes (Aside: I am personally a fan of it).

#3 You gave words to my feeling - you give words to audience for the feeling that they were never able to express. Memes and videos sometimes do this and because of which, they may go viral (every creator's wet dream).

#4 Absolutely hate it - speeches and statements of President Trump probably fall in this basket. This kind of content works because it's able to produce a strong reaction from the audience.

#5 You made me laugh/cry - this is what great authors and creators have accomplished. It is hard for an artist to ensure this reaction. If it works in your favour, my friend, you are one of the rare geniuses.

Audience usually reacts to one or more of these five ways. This is why some creators attract a huge audience others don't. My conclusions are not A/B tested but I am pretty sure that every person at the core wants to interact with anianimate content because we are living beings. Content or products are to us, what maybe a ball or leaves to animals. We want to play with it, enrich our minds with it and share it with our friends and closed ones.

To conclude, good content is not enough in the world of social media. There is a barrage of content uploaded every single day. Brewing great content is just like brewing a drink, there is action involved in the process. It is this action that produces the subsequent reaction, that stirs people, eventually attracting a huge audience.
