BUENOS AIRES, May 19 (Reuters) - Argentina's agricultural heartland has been lashed by heavy rains in recent days, leaving some soy fields underwater with up to 400 millimeters (15.75 inches) of precipitation recorded in certain areas bringing widespread flooding. "Everywhere you looked was like a sea of water," grains farmer Martin Vivanco told Reuters by phone on Monday from San Antonio de Areco, a rural area 100 kilometers (62.14 miles) west of the capital city, Buenos Aires. "Some of the farmland in lower regions is completely covered in water and will be very hard to harvest. Some people even lost their farms." Argentina is the world's top exporter of soybean oil and soybean meal, and the No. 3 exporter of corn. The precipitation is some three to four times normal levels for May, according to German Heinzenknecht, a meteorologist at Applied Climatology Consulting, raising farmers' fears that the soy and corn crops could suffer major losses.
i cannot help but feel like things are accelerating at a pace that no one in the world is prepared to deal with in the short-term or the long-term.

---------------------------------------
Many years ago, I came across “Bestia Bebé” on some list of recommended bands. I listened and instantly bought into it.
The previous year, in a sudden and final gesture, my band played its one and only reunion show — and after that, I found myself taking refuge in the music of other bands.
We ended that year in Parque Patricios, blocking off our street with neighbors and friends for a truly meaningful night.
Then we headed to San Antonio de Areco with a little stowaway kitten and our dog. Everything was very improvised.
Ever since we discovered them, and throughout that whole summer, Bestia Bebé became the soundtrack of our family. I’m not sure why exactly, but it’s the band that made me feel like going to live shows again.
My daughter and I go see them every time we can — and it’s always a celebration.
Being invited to make some drawings for them is an enormous gift. It’s exactly what 14-year-old punkito Sawita would have dreamed of… and I’m sure he’s happy that grown-up Sawa is doing it now.

Trump Berates Companies for Warning About Tariff Price Increases (NYT) President Trump is telling some of the nation’s largest companies that they should eat the cost of his tariffs, as a growing number of businesses signal that they must raise prices to blunt the impact of a persistent global trade war. As a result, the man who ran for the presidency by boasting about his business acumen is now openly sparring with corporate America, seeking to dictate how Walmart, Mattel, and other retailers and manufacturers respond to some of the highest levies seen in decades. Since the spring, the United States has imposed a 10 percent tariff on nearly every nation, with steeper duties reserved for specific products and countries, including a minimum 30 percent tax on Chinese imports. While the White House insists the president’s strategy is working—generating new revenue and forcing nations to negotiate—some companies have started to report early signs of financial strain. Their warnings have affirmed economists’ long and widely held belief that tariffs fall hardest on U.S. companies and consumers, not the allies and adversaries that Mr. Trump seeks to punish.
Venezuelans’ Status Revoked (1440) The Supreme Court approved the Trump administration’s emergency request to revoke Venezuelans’ temporary protected status yesterday. The decision clears the way for the Department of Homeland Security to begin deporting nearly 350,000 people, pending individual appeals. Since 1990, the TPS program has allowed the federal government to extend legal status and work permits to people from countries experiencing war, natural disaster, or other crises. The protections are intended to end when conditions improve. The Biden administration first granted Venezuelans TPS in 2021, when over 5 million people fled President Nicolás Maduro’s regime and inflation approached 3,000%. Yesterday’s decision applies to those who received TPS in 2023 when the Biden administration extended the program. The 2021 cohort is expected to see protections expire later this year.
Argentina’s farmers describe ‘sea of water’ after downpour hits harvest (Reuters) Argentina’s agricultural heartland has been lashed by heavy rains in recent days, leaving some soy fields underwater with up to 400 millimeters (15.75 inches) of precipitation recorded in certain areas bringing widespread flooding. “Everywhere you looked was like a sea of water,” grains farmer Martin Vivanco told Reuters by phone on Monday from San Antonio de Areco, a rural area 100 kilometers (62.14 miles) west of the capital city, Buenos Aires. “Some of the farmland in lower regions is completely covered in water and will be very hard to harvest. American threats push Greenland closer to Denmark (Economist) American spooks boast formidable intelligence-gathering tools. On any given day they might be hoovering up the phone records of suspected terrorists or tracking Russian troops in Ukraine. These days, however, spies can be found snooping on a target much closer to home: Greenland. According to a recent report in the Wall Street Journal, the Trump administration directed its intelligence agencies to step up surveillance of Greenland’s independence movement and identify locals sympathetic to American designs on the Arctic island. It is the latest twist in President Donald Trump’s stated desire to buy or conquer the self-governing territory of 56,000 people, which is part of the kingdom of Denmark. Allegations of spying have sparked widespread outrage among Greenlanders and Danes. “Espionage against an ally and partner [is] completely unacceptable” thundered Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Greenland’s prime minister. The Danish government swiftly summoned America’s ambassador for a dressing-down. Lawmakers are considering closing the American consulate in Nuuk, the capital. Elections to Greenland’s 31-member parliament in March handed the opposition Democrats, who have favoured closer ties with Denmark and a slower path to independence, a plurality. The new governing coalition stated it would “tread carefully” with regards to independence (read: not any time soon). Relations between Greenland and Denmark are growing noticeably warmer.
The UK and the EU hail a new chapter as they sign fresh deals 5 years after Brexit (AP) Britain and the European Union hailed a new chapter in their relationship Monday after sealing fresh agreements on defense cooperation and easing trade flows at their first formal summit since Brexit. Five years after the U.K. left the EU, ties were growing closer again as Prime Minister Keir Starmer met European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and other senior EU officials in London for talks. The deals will slash red tape, grow the British economy and reset relations with the 27-nation trade bloc, Starmer said, while von der Leyen called the talks a “historic moment” that benefits both sides.
Spain Orders Airbnb to Take Down 66,000 Rental Listings (NYT) The Spanish government on Monday ordered Airbnb to remove nearly 66,000 listings from its platform, widening a crackdown on tourist rentals as it seeks to alleviate a housing crisis that has become among the worst in Europe. The government said the listings were in violation of rules because they either lacked licenses, had fake license numbers or failed to reveal whether the property was run by a corporation or an individual. Airbnb said in a statement that it would continue to appeal all decisions linked to the case. A spokesman said the company would keep the listings up until the appeal made its way through the courts. Housing affordability has become a critical social and political issue in Spain, where mass demonstrations have been held across the country by people who say the proliferation of real estate investors and the conversion of lodging into tourist accommodations have pushed families from their homes. The scarcity has helped drive up prices much faster than wages, putting affordable housing out of reach for many.
Russian fighter jet protects ‘shadow fleet’ vessel in first such move by Moscow, officials say (CNN) Until last week, a secretive fleet of ships ferrying Russian oil around the world showed no clear links to the Kremlin. That changed when, in a dramatic escalation, Russia used a fighter jet in an apparent effort to protect one of the tankers thought to be in the fleet. After the Estonian military contacted the Jaguar—an unflagged tanker sanctioned by the United Kingdom earlier this month—on May 13 in an attempt to carry out checks, a Russian Su-35 fighter jet flew past the ship, inside Estonian airspace, the Estonian Defense Forces said. The military eventually escorted the tanker out of Estonian waters. The “shadow fleet” tankers transport Russian oil for export to avoid Western sanctions. As such, they have themselves become a focus of further sanctions on Moscow.
Nobody in Ukraine Thinks the War Will End Soon (The Atlantic) On Saturday, I asked Andriy Sadovyi, the mayor of Lviv, in western Ukraine, whether he expected the Russian-Ukrainian talks in Istanbul to lead to a cease-fire. “No,” he told me. Later, I asked the audience at the Lviv Media Forum whether any of them expected a cease-fire soon. About 200 journalists and editors were in the room. No one raised their hand. Many laughed. Over several days in Lviv I didn’t meet anybody who believed that the Russian president wants to end the war, or that he will negotiate to do so in Istanbul. Ukrainian reasoning is straightforward: Vladimir Putin has never said he wants to end the war. The propagandists on Russian state television have never said they want to end the war. The Russian negotiating team in Istanbul did not say it wanted to end the war. On the contrary, the head of the Russian delegation, Vladimir Medinsky, told the Ukrainians, “We fought Sweden for 21 years. How long are you ready to fight?”
Modi’s Government Cracks Down on Dissent Over Pakistan Conflict (NYT) India’s government is taking legal action against academics, journalists and private companies seen as critical of its recent military campaign against Pakistan, including arresting one professor who had admonished Indians “who are baying for war.” During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decade in power, his government has routinely punished critics with criminal charges, legal investigations and travel bans. The latest crackdown on dissent shows Indian leaders’ sensitivity to the political fallout from a four-day conflict that ended under outside mediation with no clear victor. The academic who was arrested, Ali Khan Mahmudabad, had cheered on his country’s armed forces during the military face-off, as had millions of other Indians. But he also criticized “those who are mindlessly advocating for a war.” Mr. Mahmudabad, 42, was later arrested on charges that included threatening India’s sovereignty.
Syria’s driest winter in nearly 7 decades triggers a severe water crisis in Damascus (AP) Inside a mountain above the Syrian capital, Hassan Bashi walked through tunnels that used to be filled with water from a spring famous for its pure waters. The spring rises inside the ruins of a Roman temple in the Barada Valley and flows toward Damascus, which it has been supplying with drinking water for thousands of years. Normally, during the winter flood season, water fills all the tunnels and washes over much of the temple. Now, there is only a trickle of water following the driest winter in decades. The spring is the main source of water for 5 million people, supplying Damascus and its suburbs with 70% of their water. As the city suffers its worst water shortages in years, many people now rely on buying water from private tanker trucks that fill from wells. Government officials are warning that the situation could get worse in the summer and are urging residents to use water sparingly while showering, cleaning or washing dishes.
Jabaliya: Endless Catastrophes in a Besieged Refugee Camp (Drop Site News) For the fourth time, the Israeli war machine is returning to destroy what has already been destroyed in Jabaliya refugee camp. I see the bombs falling again on Jabaliya from my window, and I have survived so far. I have starved, trembled with fear, and been displaced countless times. I have become an expert in navigating crises: how to escape drones, what to pack in an evacuation bag, which roads to take, how to follow the army’s advances, and how to extract survivors and pull myself out from under the rubble. I have carried the bones and remains of martyrs in my hands. I am no longer living a normal life, filled with peace and comfort. I now have simple dreams of sleeping through the night and waking up to take a shower under hot water. It’s as if even the idea of recovery or a gasp of breath is forbidden to us. Ever since the war resumed in March and all the aid was halted, I’ve been in a state of deep depression and severe stress. I was wounded in my knee a while ago and the pain is eating away at me. My head and teeth ache from malnutrition. I have an infection in my eyes and they feel like they are bursting. This endless war is chipping away at my body, my soul, and my mental health day by day. My cousin Huda was killed by an Israeli bomb a few days ago. Mercy be upon you, my cousin. I bear witness that you are now in a better place—far from this cruel world, where there is no war, no killing, and no injustice.
Strikes on Gaza kill at least 60 people, local officials say as criticism against Israel mounts (AP) Israeli strikes pounded Gaza overnight and into Tuesday, hitting a family home and a school-turned-shelter, and killing at least 60 people, Palestinian health officials said, as Israel pressed its war against Hamas despite mounting international condemnation. Israel launched another major offensive in the territory in recent days, saying it aims to return dozens of hostages held by Hamas and destroy the militant group. More than 300 have been killed since the start of the latest onslaught. Israel says it aims to seize Gaza and hold on to territory there, displace hundreds of thousands of people and secure aid distribution. Criticism of Israel’s conduct intensified Monday when allies Canada, France and the United Kingdom threatened “concrete actions” against the country, including sanctions, and called on Israel to stop its “egregious” new military actions in Gaza. Criticism against Israel’s conduct in Gaza came also from inside the country, with a leader of Israel’s center-left politics saying on Tuesday that Israel was becoming an “outcast among nations” because of the government’s approach to the war. “A sane country doesn’t engage in fighting against civilians, doesn’t kill babies as a hobby and doesn’t set for itself the goals of expelling a population,” Yair Golan, a retired general and leader of the opposition Democrats party, told Reshet Bet radio.

Curiosidades
