Gaza has been enduring the horrors of war, destruction, death, and displacement for over a year. The death toll has exceeded 50,000, with thousands missing, hundreds of thousands wounded, and over 2 million people displaced from their homes. As this tragedy continues, it seems the world has lost its conscience, remaining silent in the face of such devastation without taking any meaningful action.
Gaza, once praying over its dead alone, now seems as though it is mourning the death of the world’s conscience, as humanity and the principles of human rights have been abandoned, leaving its people to face death and destruction on their own.

The Scream
Tumblr media
Kent Monkman, The Scream (2017). Acrylic on canvas, 213.4 x 274.3 cm. Private Collection.
Kent Monkman’s The Scream is a haunting and visceral representation of one of Canada’s darkest chapters—the forced removal of Indigenous children from their families. Through his signature blend of historical references and contemporary critique, Monkman does not just depict history; he demands that we confront it.
The Violence of Colonialism
At first glance, The Scream is overwhelming. Chaos erupts across the canvas as uniformed government agents, priests, and nuns violently seize Indigenous children from their mothers. The raw, desperate emotion in the figures’ faces is nearly unbearable. Monkman captures a moment that is both historical and ongoing, referencing the traumatic legacy of the residential school system and the Sixties Scoop. The painting’s vivid, almost cinematic quality forces viewers to witness the horrors inflicted upon generations of Indigenous peoples.
Subverting Traditional Art Forms
Monkman frequently reinterprets classical European painting styles to expose colonial violence, and The Scream is no exception. The composition recalls Baroque and Romantic historical paintings, yet the subject matter is far removed from the grand narratives of European conquest and power. Instead of glorifying authority, Monkman lays bare its brutality. By using a style typically reserved for stories of heroism, he turns the lens on the aggressors, making them impossible to ignore.
The Power of Perspective
While the oppressors in the painting are detailed and recognizable, the Indigenous figures are depicted in varying states of distortion, their faces frozen in expressions of anguish. This visual choice reflects how Indigenous voices and stories have often been silenced or erased. Yet, through this distortion, Monkman makes their suffering undeniable. The painting shifts the focus from the colonizers—so often the centre of historical narratives—to the victims and survivors of these violent policies.
Reflecting on Trauma and Resilience
Beyond its depiction of trauma, The Scream is also an act of reclamation. Monkman, a Cree artist, creates work that reclaims Indigenous stories and spaces in the art world. This painting is not just about suffering—it is about survival. By forcing audiences to bear witness, he ensures that these histories are not forgotten, and that dialogue around reconciliation continues.
What Does It Mean to Bear Witness?
The Scream demands more than passive viewing. It forces us to ask: What does it mean to bear witness to history? How do we move beyond acknowledging past atrocities and toward real justice for Indigenous communities?

Before the Fall is a 75x100 cm surreal digital artwork that explores the transformative power of love when rooted in trust and strength. At its center, a glowing candle illuminates a dark void, symbolizing the enduring light of connection amidst uncertainty. Beneath the candle lies a vibrant kaleidoscope of human figures—holding hands, fighting, cheering—representing the complexity of human relationships and the ripple effect of love when guided by resilience.
This piece challenges the viewer to reconsider love not as fleeting or fragile but as a foundation for unity and change. By anchoring love in strength and trust, it can inspire new ways of building meaningful connections and reshaping the world around us. The artwork’s minimalist yet profound composition emphasizes the duality of simplicity and depth, making it a striking addition to contemporary NFT collections.

Healing Through Music, Dance, and Art for the Poor
The contemporary fast-paced environment has revealed art as an effective instrument for healing patients alongside promoting societal transformation. Through music and artistic expression combined with dance events people can lift their spirits whereas these forms of art also produce positive changes in disadvantaged communities. Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) actively utilize artistic elements to deliver comfort alongside psychological support and happiness for homeless senior citizens in old age residences and orphaned children in shelters.
How NGOs Foster Healing Through Art in India
Multiple outstanding welfare organizations operating in Delhi use artistic tools including music and dance along with art to heal and empower impoverished communities. Non-Governmental Organizations establish creative platforms which enable people to develop self-confidence together with emotional healing and creative expression. Modern science acknowledges art therapy as a powerful method that heals stress along with depression and loneliness specifically within defenseless groups including senior citizens in old age homes and orphaned children.
Music Therapy for Senior Citizens
Advanced age presents multiple difficulties that affect mental health and the psychological state and physical well-being of seniors. Several Indian old age facilities including those in Delhi have introduced music therapy programs to better support their elderly populations. Scientific research shows that listening to classical and devotional music and playing simple instruments alongside singing brings anxiety relief and enhances memory while delivering joy to senior citizens.
Social welfare organizations partner with numerous old age homes in the area to conduct music therapy services for their elderly residents. The combination of music therapy proves effective with dementia patients and Alzheimer's patients because it activates their brain functions while triggering positive recollections from the past.
Dance for Emotional and Physical Well-being
Through its therapeutic function dance provides both emotional and physical benefits to people. Nonprofit organizations began offering dance classes at old age orphanages and shelter homes and senior citizen care centers. Through these programs people can stay physically active as well as improve coordination abilities and share experiences of dancing joyfully.
The nearest old age homes benefit their elderly residents through dance sessions that enhance their physical motion and lift their spirits. Learning to dance brings confidence alongside happiness to both street children and orphans thus making it an important aspect of community service programs.
Art as a Tool for Psychological Healing
Visual arts function through painting and sketching to offer direct therapeutic results which support trauma and emotional processing. NGO mental health programs combine art therapy to help children and elderly patients express their feelings. Standard Sunrise Foundation and other nonprofit organizations conduct painting events that offer underprivileged people the space to display their artistic capabilities and creativity.

Exploring "Untouchable Utopia" by Manish Harijan
I recently visited the exhibition "Untouchable Utopia" by Manish Harijan, which is currently on display at the Art House in Wakefield. This exhibition combines powerful visual art with poignant social commentary, inviting viewers to reflect on themes of identity, society, and the complexities of utopian ideals.
Art and Identity
As I entered the exhibition, I was immediately captivated by the vibrant colours and striking compositions adorning the walls. Harijan's work often explores the intersection of personal and collective experiences. The pieces challenge preconceived notions of identity, especially in relation to societal structures.
One of the standout pieces features a circular canvas depicting a young woman draped in a colourful dress, surrounded by intricate patterns. This artwork not only showcases Harijan's artistic talent but also symbolises the beauty and resilience of marginalised identities. The vibrant colours create a sense of hope and possibility, inviting viewers to envision a more inclusive future.
Sculptural Works
In addition to the paintings, the exhibition includes several sculptural installations that add depth to the narrative. One notable piece features a dome-like structure made of interwoven materials, reflecting themes of enclosure and protection. The interplay of light and shadow in this installation creates an immersive experience.
Another sculpture, resembling an orb, combines organic forms with a sense of modernity. This piece encourages consideration of the relationship between traditional and contemporary influences in art and culture.
Visual Narratives
Throughout the exhibition, Harijan uses humour and irony to address serious issues. One painting features a superhero figure surrounded by familiar objects, yet the composition conveys a sense of ridicule. This juxtaposition challenges viewers to consider the societal roles assigned to individuals and the expectations that accompany them.
Another artwork depicts a figure lying on the ground, surrounded by everyday items. The use of colour and form creates a surreal atmosphere, prompting reflections on the complexities of existence and the search for meaning in a chaotic world.
Culture
Harijan's work also pays homage to iconic figures and pop culture, as seen in a series of prints featuring a reimagined Marilyn Monroe. This playful reinterpretation highlights the complexities of fame and beauty while inviting viewers to question societal standards.
The artist's ability to blend cultural references with personal narratives creates a rich tapestry of ideas that resonate deeply. Each piece serves as a reflection of contemporary society, urging viewers to confront the realities of our world.
Overall
"Untouchable Utopia" is a compelling exhibition that offers a unique perspective on identity, society, and the pursuit of a more inclusive future. Manish Harijan's vibrant artworks and innovative sculptures encourage viewers to engage with complex themes while celebrating the beauty of diversity.
Although not directly linked to my practice, it's still very useful to see the curation of a diverse range of artworks and how they are received by an audience.
