Embracing Design Thinking: Insights from a Stranger Interview

I recently approached a fellow student at our university — a thoughtful guy studying engineering. I asked him, “What does design thinking mean to you, and how do you think it could apply to your life or future career?” His response revealed some profound insights.

He paused for a moment, clearly reflecting on the question. “For me, design thinking is all about empathy,” he said. “You need to truly understand the people you’re designing for. It’s not just about creating something cool; it’s about solving real problems for real people.”

As he spoke, I could see his passion. He continued, “In my future projects, whether it's an app or a product, I want to make sure I’m not just guessing what users want. I want to engage with them, hear their stories, and build solutions that resonate with their needs.”

Then he shared something that really struck me. “You know, the iterative process is so important. It’s okay to fail and try again. Every failure teaches you something new.” His confidence in learning from mistakes highlighted a crucial mindset for any entrepreneur.

“What if we used design thinking to create an app that helps students manage stress? Something that analyzes their habits and suggests personalized self-care strategies?” His eyes lit up as he explained. “Imagine an app that integrates with your schedule, tracks your study patterns, and reminds you to take breaks or try mindfulness exercises. It could really change how we handle academic pressure.”

That idea resonated with me. It wasn't just about building a useful tool; it was about fostering well-being in a high-pressure environment. “A stress-management app,” I echoed, picturing its impact on our campus community.

He emphasized that design thinking is not just about innovation but also about collaboration. “Working with others brings in different perspectives that can lead to better solutions,” he mentioned. “In group projects, we can create more impactful designs by combining our strengths.”

We discussed how design thinking applies to various fields, from tech to healthcare, emphasizing the need for adaptability. “The world is changing so fast,” he said. “Being a lifelong learner is essential. The skills you acquire today may not be relevant tomorrow, especially in tech.”

After our conversation, I felt inspired. It made me realize that design thinking goes beyond traditional entrepreneurship. It focuses on empathy, creativity, and collaboration, and is a strong tool for creating real change in the world.

Entrepreneurs who embrace design thinking can create solutions that not only meet market demands but also enhance the lives of others. As this student demonstrated, the combination of user-centered design and innovative thinking can lead to ideas that truly matter.
