Time to be a bit of a shill for a minute, but it kind of does stagger me ArtStudio Pro isn't talked about more in art/drawing circles. It's my preferred program of choice (aside from Clip Studio which I use on desktop only).

Like, yeah, I do dig Procreate as well (it's super easy to use and minimalistic and the brush engine is excellent), but ArtStudio Pro has more of the features I tend to use: extremely easy merge options (by visibility or selection etc), altering groups (ex: changing opacity of an entire group, applying layer masks to a group, etc.), a very comprehensive autoshape feature, an easily applicable symmetry toggle. It also has wet mixing brushes (meaning: smudge and paint mixed together), which admittedly I don't tend to use super often, but hey the option is there!

The group features really, really are my jam. So often I like to sketch individual objects on different layers and then I wanna change my lineart layer opacity, and I can just... stick 'em all in a folder and away we go! In Procreate I am forced to merge them or change the opacity individually per layer and it's a big pain in my caboose. To boot, ArtStudio Pro is compatible with Photoshop brushes (whereas Procreate requires its own brush).

Also? Paint bucket. Beloved paint bucket. Drag and drop color is a mixed bag for me, and I like my old school bucket.

ANYWAY--all this to say, if you like to draw/sketch/paint on the iPad and miss some of the features of Clip Studio or Photoshop that aren't in Procreate, take a look at ArtStudio Pro. It's pretty sweet.

ARTSTUDIO PRO - ERASE ALONG THE EDGES

Here’s a tutorial for ASP. “Erase Along the Edges” was such a powerful tol back in my Clip Studio Paint days, but I’ve long since switched to ipad. I really tried to give procreate a go but it’s just not my vibe. So I tried ASP because people said that CSP / Photoshop users might find it better. It is loads better. It’s a damn shame that not a lot of people use it, though.

To transcribe the photo tutorial:

1. Have two layers separate: (1) for line art, and (2) for colors (multiple colors are fine)

2. Toggle the “reference” switch in the line art layer settings.

3. Tap or switch back to your colors layer.

4. Change your fill tool settings (not in the photo, but the icon underneath the brush sliders is where you can find the settings)

Bucket fill (NOT Lasso fill)

Blending: Clear

Edges: Smart

Sample: Reference

5. Tap outside the circle to keep the colors within / Tap inside the circle to keep the colors outside
