A piece of music that reminds you your hometown
Slowdive - Souvlaki Space Station
The piece of music you’ve listened to the most
The Cure - This Twilight Garden
Hi. My name is Vagelis and as far as I can remember my self I always felt irresistibly attracted to pop culture. Collecting glossy stickers in the 80s as a child, watching MTV and sometime later feeling enchanted by the emerging indie/alternative scene it was something like a natural evolution to buy my first electric guitar at 14 years old, a time when (for good, for bad or for worse) the brit pop scene was dominating the indie universe. I tried to teach my own self by trying to play impromptu chords, by badly perform riffs, by getting hold of some books on first level guitar playing and that’s how I kind of learned to strum the guitar. The truth is that I never considered myself as a guitarist, rather than someone who plays a bit of guitar. And I think that this was the main reason I started writing my own songs. It was way easier to perform the things I had written based on my own guitar skills rather than playing other people’s compositions.
The first band that I was involved in should be around 1998 and it was called “Snowing Summer” (a wordy variation of “Snow In Summer” which was a b-side by the Cure). We never played live, we just recorded a live demo of our own songs, but to be honest I do not even know where that tape is.
Moving forward to 2000, some friends and I started playing for fun as a band called “Mad! Panic! Yes!” which was a line a read in a comic book hanging at the studio lobby table during a rehearsal break. We played mostly punk staff, or poppier staff in a punkish way. When we saw that this could go somewhere further, a couple of members of the band and I decided to pull out of “Mad! Panic! Yes!” and create the core of “Paraffin” (the band was named after the single Paraffin by Ruby). By adding a new bassist, a new guitarist and a keyboardist to the band we recorded a demo EP including three songs, “Watch Me Falling”, “No Love Lost” and “Paraffin”. Around that time I also started spinning music as a “two days a week resident DJ” in the beloved POP bar downtown Athens. I deejayed and spent most of my personal time in POP from its (almost) day one in summer of 2001 up to its last day in summer of 2012. 11 sweet years in a row that this bar was way more than just a place with drinks and music. A meeting place for people who loved all kinds of art, a place where special human bonding, deep love and true friendship was founded. So, looking back to 2001-2004 life was music, listening to music, playing cds and records for people, playing the guitar, writing songs, throwing live gigs with Paraffin and somewhere in between a bit of studying economics.
So, it was the spring of 2004 when we substantially broke Paraffin apart. Almost instantly a couple of members, once again, and I created “the Model Spy” (we actually got the name from the track “Model Spy” by Cinerama). Konstantinos joined the group as our bassist and that was it. We were rehearsing and writing songs like crazy, however the band was essentially introduced to the outside small-town world around 2006-2007, with a couple of DIY self-released EPs and singles that were available at selected record stores (like the legendary Vinyl Microstore and the, now, 50 years old Record House) and our live performances in Athens.
Moving amongst the underground indie environment that Athens and My Space explosion were creating at that moment, we were putting together new material, hence the idea of leaving the DIY process for an official recording was more than a goal. It was still back in summer of 2008 when, during a rehearsal break at Sonic Playground studios, Nikos Triantafyllou (long time promoter, producer and sound engineer) stated that he was willing to take over the production and release Model Spy's full-length album.  From that time onwards and for months to follow, we would take meetings after rehearsing at the studio on almost every weekend and on as many weekday afternoons and evenings as possible, recording, erasing, recording again. A year or so later, we had recorded fourteen (instrumental) tracks. Even though, the production team was always by our side, however (and unhappily) some of the band members failed at fulfilling their commitment.  Sadly enough, long-term friendships were violently terminated and left a half-broken up band and an unfinished record.
Within a couple of years down the road, there was a feeling of unfulfillment for Konstantinos Vavousis (bass) and me. By that time we were leading the project as sole members of the Model Spy while we already had this “morning ‘real’ job” thing going on in our lives, Konstantinos was musically active with various Athenian indie acts (such as My Wet Calvin, Zebra Tracks, Monika, Leon of Athens, etc.) and I was still a part-time local indie DJ (still am). So, essentially the band was led to a hiatus.
Entering 2015 reunion era: There was still a feeling of unfulfillment. By that time, it was as if the band was a “has been” while the few people that had a connection to the band felt like we were another local indie pop act of the Greek My Space generation whose traces were lost. Nonetheless and weirdly enough time was not an issue. We had already waited for too long and it was 2017 by the time we revisited already recorded sessions, and finally decided to follow contemporary indie pop standards. We went back to Nikos Triantafyllou as the man behind the desk, kept the spirit of the album alive, but also started the whole thing from scratch.  Adding, the genius of Chris Bekiris (Bhukurah, Devamp Javu, Chickn, the Callas etc. etc.) in coproduction, sound design, additional arrangements and soon were some kind of a new band back together.
Bekiris and Triantafyllou performed their productive magic while Leonidas Oikonomou & Aris Nikolopoulos from My Wet Calvin, Kat (Tango with Lions), Evangelia a.k.a. Miss Trichromi, Leon Veremis a.k.a. Leon of Athens and Jef Maarawi accepted their guest features and gave new life to the songs by endowing their voices. And there you go. Our never-ending debut was finally ready to go, with a little help from our friends. “Serenest (A Long Play On Truth, Deceit And Souvenirs)” was finally released on November 8, 2019. Needless to say that the whole covid 19 thing did not allow our summer 2020 plans to evolve. However we have already been preparing new material within the Model Spy, a solo project (called “Ntentenis” -?-) involving dance music is in the works, my weekly live broadcast through Avopolis Radio is still on for the fourth season, while I keep (part-timely) deejaying non stop since summer of 2000 and the love for music keeps growing like the sea.

Introducing Team PrePhiX (Premium Philips X)
Rosalie Mourmans,
Master in Neuropsychology
Hey! My name is Rosalie and I am from Maastricht, here I did my bachelor’s in psychology, work as an academic tutor and currently doing my Master in Neuropsychology. This study focuses on congenital, acquired or degenerative brain dysfunctions; related neuropsychiatric disorders; and the neuropharmacological mechanisms that underlie behaviour.
Tumblr media
For my exchange, I went to Hong Kong where I did a minor in criminal justice and the psychology of law enforcement administration in Asia. Since my experience in Hong Kong, I really got a taste for traveling and I can’t wait until my next trip! 😊
In the weekends I work in a café restaurant which might explain my love for food and drinks... Nothing beats a night out with good company, delicious food, and some drinks! Also, I volunteer in an institution that works with people who suffer from traumatic brain injury. Very satisfactory work to do! But, all this, and my current research internship which is based in a lab is not giving me any insights into the real working world, in companies and businesses.
So, the main reason for me to apply for the Premium programme is to gain more practical experience and insights in a company to complement my skills and competencies. Also, working in an internationally oriented setting and meeting so many new people really interests me.
I was super happy to hear that I could start with the programme and now I can proudly present myself as a member of team Prephix! With the Prephix team, we are doing a project for Philips which on the one hand perfectly fits my study background but, more importantly, working with such a big company as Philips is completely new for me and totally out of the box. I am sure this project will proof a very valuable experience where I will benefit from in my future career!
Fun fact: You are actually allowed, although I totally love sleeping, to wake me up for some good sushi!
Aline Simonetti
Master in Neuroeconomics
Tumblr media
Hi! I am Aline, and I am in the first year of my master’s program in neuroeconomics.  Since almost everybody shows a weird face when I say what I am studying, the explanation is very simple: take economics, psychology, and neuroscience, put all together, mix them, and the result is a subject called neuroeconomics! Now, jumping to the Premium Program, when I first heard about it, immediately I had that feeling that it would be the perfect opportunity to do something besides the university. And more important, a great chance to meet interesting people! Also, after reading about Philips project, I already knew that it would be my first option since it offers a nice match with my studies. So, here I am on the Prephix Team!
Fun fact: Even being Brazilian, I know (literally) what is winter! Yes, where I am from, we do have winter!
Myria Koutsoumpa
Master in Global Health, specialization in Health Management, Policy, and Economics
My name is Myria and I am originally from Athens, Greece, where I grew up, completed my undergraduate studies and worked in public and private healthcare. In the past, I might have been your worst nightmare, aka your dentist, but I am currently doing my Master in Global Health at the University of Maastricht.
Tumblr media
The Premium experience, and especially our collaboration with Philips and their project, is my first “outing” from the strict, clinical world, and I am confident that I am going to gain and develop valuable skills and competences for the future.
One might wonder why a dentist abandons the safety and stability of working at dental practice to head for the “unknown. Since my early years at university, there was always a question rising in my mind. Is it possible to promote and improve people's health at a larger scale, not only in an individual, but in a community, national, or even global level? This and more questions drove me all the way to my current studies, which I consider to be a great opportunity for me, being a former clinician, to broaden my knowledge horizons on health and to introduce me to the world of health economics, policy-making, governance of health and much more.
We need collective and co-operative effort to make the world a better place. And effort is like toothpaste, you can always squeeze out a bit more.
Fun Fact: I am also a keen Argentinian Tango dancer! ¡¿Bailamos?!
Chinmay Dhawan,
Data Scientist in the making!
Hi People, I am Chinmay. I was born in India and pretty much spent my whole life there before coming here. I chose Maastricht because I wanted to travel and live a different culture and where else to be except at the heart of the three countries.
Tumblr media
I am studying my masters in Data Science for Decision Making at the Knowledge Engineering department. And, I am having a blast, literally, my mind is about to explode with all the free time I have. :D
Apart from studies, I love animals, a lot. I also like reading and sometimes writing as well, not reports though.
Moving on to the Premium, I chose it because it gives me an opportunity to use my skills in practice and a chance to work with a diverse and international team. Im totally enjoying it because my team-mates are four beautiful girls who are easy and fun to work with.  :)
Fun Fact: There is no fun fact! :P
Lisanne Maandonks
Master in Strategic Marketing
Hi! My name is Lisanne and I am from Bladel, a small town near Eindhoven in the Netherlands. I am currently studying my master’s in Strategic Marketing. Before my Master, I did my Bachelor in Maastricht in International Business at the SBE and I spend my exchange semester in Australia. I choose for this study because I like to combine strategy with creativity!
Tumblr media
During my studies, I have been looking forward to transferring my theoretical knowledge into practical experiences so when I saw Premium Program I knew this would be an amazing opportunity for me to do so. The Philips project is a great way for me to get an insight in a corporate business, to get in touch with a company I see myself working for in the future and to gain knowledge in an unknown but very interesting field namely neuropsychology!
I am very happy to be part of the Prephix Team and to have met such amazing people! I am enjoying all the workshops where I have a chance to meet even more people and to gain very valuable knowledge I can apply immediately.
Looking forward seeing the progress of all projects!

In this "crouching love, hidden breakup" story, inspired by 50's Shanghai water ink animation & kung fu films, themes of distance, tradition, art and longing dominate a telephonic conversation as a martial arts tango provides the visual backdrop.
Shannon Kook, star of Degrassi the Next Generation and The Conjuring, won the best voice performance at the ACTRA awards for his role on the film. Vid Cousins composed the music based on an original musical theme by Kid Koala.
The film won Best Art Direction Award at Anima Mundi, Best Canadian Shortwork at the Whistler Film Festival, AnimAsian award at the Toronto International Reel Asian Film Festival, Audience Choice Award at the Athens Animation Festival in upstate NY. It was nominated for prizes at Cristal Festival in Switzerland, Golden Reel award at LA Asian Pacific Film Festival. And here is an uplifting story about how I learned to draw as a kid, entitled Asthma Tech: jonjonphenomenon.com/2012/asthma-tech/
@JonNgAnimation Facebook.com/RequiemForRomance
The film was Official Selection in Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film, Melbourne International Film Festival, Palm Springs International Shortfest and was presented as part of the Best of Quebec presentation in the Cannes Market in 2012.
