Would you care to tell us more about the large-pocketed skirts? 👀

I absolutely can.

They’re the @mayakern skirts. They are lovely and I get so many compliments whenever I wear any of them. I feel like the librarian version of Ms. Frizzle when I wear them. I recently got myself the stargayzing skirt and the monarchs one - I wore the latter for the first day of Summer Reading, and our library’s kickoff party, and got complimented many times.

(Today I wore the one with the big fern-y leaves, gives me jungle vibes. A patron said I should have worn it when Shedskin Reptiles is here for tomorrow’s program, but we did a Dino-craft today and it was the closest I had to that.)

(Oh man, maybe one day there will be a, like, fossils one.)

They’re long enough to wear to work, and completely cover the bike shorts I wear underneath for thick-thigh and bending-over comfort. They fit comfortably around my waist - though they changed manufacturers recently and thus the sizes are done differently, and one size I fit is just a little tight feeling by the end of the day (the elastic digs in more) and the other pulls down with even just my car keys in my pocket, let alone my phone (too loose for my preference.) I’m debating seeing if my mom can’t work some sewing-hemming style magic on that one.

The best part, besides the comfy skirts with pretty and fun designs, is the pockets. And when I say the pockets are large, I mean that they advertise them as able to fit a Nintendo switch and they are NOT JOKING.

I like to wear them when I go out to the orchestra or movies or to eat, and I don’t want to be dealing with a whole purse. I can fit my wallet, my phone, my inhaler, my keys, my sunglasses, and a travel size pill bottle of assorted meds into the two pockets and still have room to spare. Often you can’t even really tell I have things in said pockets unless the weight is pulling down the band of the skirt.

I even have one of their mini-skirts, because I wanted the aurora borealis pattern and it was out of the midi length, and the pockets are still large, and the skirt still covers well, and my bike shorts barely peek out of the hem.

The first one I ever got was the Bee skirt, which is back (my mom asked me to buy her one, so I did lol). The jellyfish are back too, which I also have.

They’re definitely a bit of a splurge for me, but I’d rather spend the money on a cute, comfy, well-made skirt by a small independent business than on things from the store that don’t fit well and I’m lucky to get pockets with and are medicorely made.

Anyway, if you love fun skirts with large pockets I highly suggest checking them out.

Documentation of Fossil Forest's First Litter SCORCH-FINAL UPDATE-End of Iron Wolf PlayThrough

Scorch continued to be very much himself, traversing the steep slopes of East Amethyst Mountain with a fair bit of ease with his partner Aurora.

They settled with their own freshly dug den overlooking the cliffside in the middle of their territory. Appropriately dubbed, Cliffside Den.

There they had a humble litter of four pups. Two males; Igneous and Granite, and two females; Marble and Quartz. Scorch was fiercely overprotective, as he had quite a run of bad blood with surrounding wolf packs due to his behavior as a dispersal wolf before settling down, and because it seemed he had set up turf in the middle of a boar grizzly's.

Scorch and Aurora came into conflict with the boar grizzle quite often, especially when it came to their hunts. Though they always managed to either chase him away or steal pieces to eat at a safe distance.

The boar grizzly wasn't the only competition however, as coyotes would regularly follow the pair on hunts with hopes of harassing the two of them enough to scavenge from fallen prey.

Regardless, for the most part, Scorch and Aurora were quite successful in maintaining their turf while making time to head back home and give the four pups some good lessons, like teaching them how to howl.

It seemed however, that in Scorch and Aurora's constant harassment of the local boar grizzly, that he decided to try their den for a source of food since they had insisted on not allowing him to feed from most of their kills, and chased him away from some of his own. This was a harrowing experience, leaving Scorch with a mangled jaw by the time he and Aurora had chased the Grizzly away.

This attack was followed soon by several attacks from Scorch's most aggressive nemesis apparently, the Wapiti Pack, aiming to take out his small litter and future competition.

The constant fighting and inability to maintain his territory posts made the Fossil Forest pack's land gradually shrink, as well as their available food resources. It became harder and harder to feed his pups, and soon Scorch and his family were starving.

He came upon a Bull Moose at the edge of his turf, the first available prey he'd seen in nearly a month it felt like, and in his blinding hunger bit off more than he could chew, getting trapped under the creature's hooves.

Scorch's skull and ribs were caved in when he was found. A snarl still on his face. Though it was much younger than expected, no one was surprised that Scorch had died fighting something too big for him to take on. The moose later died of the injuries Scorch had given it, helping Aurora continue to thrive by feeding their pups and raising them on her own. It is noted that she did not take another partner for as long as she remained in the pack, til her eventual death.

While the runt of their litter, Granite, did not survive a bout of illness that took him, the rest of their small litter made it to adulthood.

They are tagged, and will be documented going forward.

WOLFQUEST: AE THREAD SCORCH-Burn Creek Pack 3M Later documented; Fossil Forest Pack 1M

Talon and Nightingale's second surviving son, the runt of the first litter, dubbed Scorch by researchers, was the first of the Burn Creek Adolescents to venture away from home and establish himself as a lone dispersal wolf. Having outgrown his previously tiny stature, now Scorch seeks to carve out a place in Yellowstone for himself.

Scorch is an over confident wolf, possibly a leftover trait from having been babied so much as a pup. This showed primarily in his first attempts at hunting elk, which were nearly disastrous.

Though Scorch was able to bring down a particularly sickly calf, this left him with a lame leg and busted jaw for much of early fall, rendering him having a more than difficult time hunting for himself and leaving him relying on scavenging.

It wasn't long before Scorch began to do what Dispersal wolves do best, invade other pack territories to nab some of their members around his age.

His main point of interest seemed to be the Wapiti Pack to the South of Amethyst.

Often, he found himself entangled with the oldest male wolf, though Scorch was large enough to handle the older wolf on his own through their several harrowing encounters.

Though Scorch would have little luck with the Wapiti females. Or any females that he ran into in Pack Territories for that matter.

All the while, a small fellow dispersal from the Biscuit Pack, just a little over a year his elder, kept tailing him, identified by researchers as Biscuit 113F. Often seen in the distance tailing Scorch, she seemed to not grab his interest.

Scorch would continue to scour the Eastern Side of Amethyst Mountain. North to the Lamar Pack, West to the Rescue Creek Pack, and then South once again back into Wapiti territory. All with no luck luring some of their bachelorettes.

His leg injury proved particularly heinous, and many researchers feared he would starve to death were it not for his incredible luck while scavenging.

And his skill as a Hare Hunter.

Never the less, the days and weeks trudged forward and despite expectations, just as when he was a pup expected to succumb to illness, Scorch refused to lay down and die.

His best stroke of luck came about when he came upon a bull bison carcass, managing to chase off the coyotes that scrapped with him for the rest of the large kill, sleeping on top of the gore once he had gorged himself on it after days with no food.

When he woke that evening, the small dispersal from the Biscuit pack had found him once again. And maybe it had been the weeks of no luck with any of the pack females, or maybe it was her tenacity and determination, but she managed to win him over.

It was an incredibly short courtship period. She had more winning over to do than he did, and by then he was already more than impressed that she hadn't left him in the dirt. After further observation and locating some records regarding the Biscuit pack, it is theorized by researchers that she was likely also a runt that managed to survive till adulthood. She would be referred to as 'Aurora' from this point forward.

The brief snowfall waned as the two settled themselves smack in the middle of the eastern side of Amethyst Mountain.

The Jawbone Halves: A jagged monument to loss and divinity, the Jawbone Halves are more than mere bone—they are a covenant carved in ice, a fractured hymn to a god’s suffering. Each half of Thrym’s lower jaw, sundered cleanly by forces unknown, resembles a glacial shard torn from the heart of a dying star. Kira’s Dagger

Blade: Forged from Starfall Iron—a rare fusion of meteorite and iron ore—this blade is a deep, inky black. When caught in the right light, it sparkles like a star-strewn night sky, a hauntingly beautiful effect that mirrors the cosmos.

Hilt: Carved from the bone of a Sawtail—a creature renowned for its toughness—the hilt bears intricate carvings of Frostbloom Flowers. These delicate etchings were done by Cara herself, each petal and stem a labor of love in memory of her sister, Kira.

This is more of a trinket than a weapon to Cara as she never uses this blade until she is taken to the Howa'ahian Palace.

Strap: Made from the scarred hide of a BloodFang Wyvern, the leather is as tough and battle-worn as Cara herself, a trophy from a near-fatal encounter.

Small Claw Pocket Knife

Blade: Carved from one of Thrym’s shed claws, this narrow, slightly curved knife has a rough, hand-forged edge that reflects its origins in the wilds.

Handle: An extension of the blade itself, it features a decorative spiral loop at the top—ideal for hanging or quick access.

Utility: Small but versatile, it’s perfect for carving, skinning, or delivering a swift, lethal strike. It’s a constant reminder of Thrym, always within reach like a trusted friend.

Viper Cat Bone Shiv

Origin: This jagged, blood-stained shiv was Cara’s first weapon, carved from the bone of a Viper Cat in the slavers’ pits. It’s crude and brutal, a product of desperation that fueled her escape to the wilds of Howa’ah.

Sentiment: It’s a raw symbol of the terrified girl she once was—and the unbreakable will that carried her through. She keeps it as a memento of her survival, a testament to her refusal to surrender.

Thin Spears of Ice

Magic: Formed from Cara’s frost magic, these spears are translucent and razor-sharp, their icy chill capable of impaling on impact.

Tactics: She summons them in an instant, hurling them with pinpoint accuracy or using them to impale foes. They’re as fragile as they are deadly, a frozen extension of her rage and precision.

Bow with Blunt Forced End and Enchanted Arrows

Bow: Made from sturdy wood with metal-capped ends, this bow is built for versatility. The blunt tips double as clubs when arrows run out or enemies close in.

Razor-Like Shards in Cara’s Hair

Description: These are razor-sharp shards made from either Thrym’s enchanted ice or the polished bones of beasts Cara has hunted. They are small, lethal, and seamlessly woven into her blonde hair.

Purpose: Designed to prevent enemies from grabbing her hair during combat, the shards act as a hidden trap. When an opponent makes contact, the jagged edges slice into their flesh, drawing blood and forcing them to let go. The ice shards, infused with frost magic, also chill the attacker’s skin, adding an extra layer of deterrence.

Fakemon I made in my junior year of high school!

They were actually part of a Physics assignment where we had a few choices on a mini project on the forces of physics and I chose to make Pokémon cards. I unfortunately don’t have the original card designs since I gave them to my teacher to use as an example for future students and I can’t find the photo I took of the cards, but I can tell you what they were based on.

Ursumber is the Gravitational Force Pokemon, a Psychic Dark(?) type with the moves Rock throw, dream eater, and hypnosis. I based it on black holes since, y’know, they have a lot of gravity. Because black holes eat stars, and stars make up constellations, I thought basing them off Ursa Minor would be cute. Stars come out during the night and children need sleep, and bears go into torpor, so sleepy sun bear baby.

Decradium is the Weak Nuclear Force Pokemon, a Rock Poison type with the original moves Beta Decay and Carbon Dating. Both were moves that had you flip coins to determine if you’d do additional damage as both of the moves were pretty weak. It was believed that when it was alive, it was a Fighting Ground type, but because of gene editing (and its a fossil Pokemon) it became a poison type. The beak design is partly based on a mosquito’s maxilla and the Pokemon itself takes from the Archaeopteryx.

Valenslime I’d the Strong Nuclear Force Pokemon, a Fairy Water type with the moves Sticky Web and Beatdown. It’s based on the hagfish, known for its viscous slime, and the ‘power of love’ being considered the strongest force.

Geksol is the Electromagnetic Force Pokemon, an Electric Fire type with the moves Solar Beam, BoomBurst, and Magnetic Blast. They are based on the aurora borealis and is super tiny due to electromagnetic force mostly focusing on how atoms interact with each other.

Hello Thea! First of all I would like to tell you that I love your work, I have been following you for a while and I find this blog super informative. Could you write about fossils Amaura and Aurorus? They are one of my favorite lines, I think they are beautiful.

I agree, they are gorgeous!

Amaura and Aurorus have very unique sense organs relative to other Fossil Pokémon. They are incredibly well-equipped to navigate freezing, dark areas. For starters, their large, pale eyes allow them to detect changes in light in near-total darkness. Furthermore, their flexible sails contain a vast network of chemo- and magneto-receptors, essentially allowing them to get a 3-dimensional sense of both smell and the Earth's magnetic fields. This, combined with their ability to generate extreme temperatures, is also what permits them to manipulate aurora as the phenomenon is an expression of various chemical molecules interacting with our magnetic fields.

Some general ghoul headcanons, because it's been a while. Let's go.

-Dew is really into learning about new technology, but also absolutely hates smart household appliances.

He doesn't want his fridge to connect to the wifi for example.

Prefers having a DVD player to dealing with streaming services that *might* have the movie he wants to watch, or make him play over and over again to watch it more than once.

Launched Swiss' smart speaker out the window when it turned on while he was in the kitchen.

-Rain paints his nails all the time and they're usually immaculate, but he's also guilty of letting it chip off or picking it off while he's sitting around.

Does other people's nails for fun, but mostly because he has the most patience out of all of them when it comes to these kinds of things.

-Mountain's biggest secret is that gardening isn't really even, like, his number one hobby. It's not even the second highest.

His absolute favorite thing to do in his free time is make food, even if he's not the best at it all the time, but that's kind of the point.

-Cumulus is the resident dinosaur/fossil enthusiast, and she managed to give Aeon and Aurora the same brain rot, so whenever they have downtime, they make trips to museums to look at their collections.
