there’s apparently a widespread tech outage right now here in australia. work computers arent working, personal computers arent working, self checkouts at stores arent working, airports arent working, banks arent working, and basically everywhere that uses technology isnt working. which is… well… everywhere.
of course, me, being the superior being i am, am unaffected by this.
the reason for this outage? apparently some company (crowdstrike) pushed an update on every device with crowdstrike installed, and that update just so happened to be bugged to the point that it completely killed any device that it was installed on. this has also apparently affected other countries too, any device with crowdstrike installed is affected, but most of the sources i find on it are all australian.
this is why forced updates shouldnt be a thing. actually, there’s a lot more reasons they shouldnt be a thing but also this. does nobody else find it weird that it’s just kinda accepted in the modern day that the things you buy can be intentionally altered by the company who owns it after youve already bought it? is that not fucking weird to you?
i honestly find the situation kind of hilarious, tho i will admit i wouldnt if i were affected. it really does show how awful a lot of modern business practices really are. i bring it up here because i dont think ive seen many people talking about this, but it’s all over the australian news rn.
also side note, i find it hilarious that this event already has a wikipedia page.
wikipedia editors are really fuckin fast

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
July 19, 2024
HEATHER COX RICHARDSON
JUL 20, 2024
Today a Russian court sentenced 32-year-old Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich to 16 years in a high-security penal colony after convicting him of espionage in a secret three-day trial. The U.S. government considers Gershkovich “wrongly detained,” a rare designation signifying that he is being held as a political bargaining chip.
Today, President Joe Biden said that Gershkovich was “targeted by the Russian government because he is a journalist and an American. We are pushing hard for Evan’s release and will continue to do so.” He added: “Journalism is not a crime. We will continue to stand strong for press freedom in Russia and worldwide, and stand against all those who seek to attack the press or target journalists.”
Last night, a faulty update of software from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike crashed computer systems all over the world. Banks and hospitals were locked out of their own programs, and government services shut down. In the U.S., more than 2,600 flights were canceled and 9,000 were delayed. Bloomberg’s David Rovella quoted Australian security consultant Troy Hunt: “I don’t think it’s too early to call it,” Hunt said. “This will be the largest IT outage in history.”
Also making history last night was the final night of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the night on which former president Donald J. Trump accepted the party’s presidential nomination. Coming as it did just days after a would-be assassin took a shot at Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, killing one attendee and badly wounding two others, the convention was billed by Republican operatives as a way for Trump to rebrand himself as a candidate of “unity.”
This was certainly the way many major newspapers billed Trump’s acceptance speech this morning, in stories that, as media journalist Parker Molloy noted, were probably based on prepared remarks delivered to news agencies in advance of the speech. But it was not how the evening played out.
Since Saturday’s shooting, it has been notable that there has not been a medical review of Trump’s injuries, although he has said he was injured by a bullet that ripped through his ear. This matters not only because of the extent of his injuries, but also because Trump has made the story part of his identity without any fact check, and the media appears simply to be letting it go on Trump’s say-so, something that adds to the sense that media outlets are treating Trump and Biden differently.
Last night, Trump perhaps tried to address this lack by recounting last Saturday’s shooting. Interestingly, he did not say he was hit by a bullet, but that when he felt the injury he thought, “it can only be a bullet.” Josh Marshall of Talking Points Memo today noted a report from local Pennsylvania television station WPXI that four motorcycle officers standing within feet of Trump suffered minor injuries from flying debris. Trump has likely cut off further discussion of the topic by saying it is too painful to tell the story again.
With that story behind him, Trump hit the theme of unity, saying he would bring the country together. “The discord and division in our society must be healed, we must heal it quickly. We are bound together by a single fate, a single destiny,” he said. “We rise together. Or we fall apart…. I am running to be president for all of America, not half of America, because there is no victory in winning for half of America. So tonight, with faith and devotion, I proudly accept your nomination for president of the United States.”
But that was just in the first ten minutes. Then Trump ignored the teleprompter and things veered far off course, reflecting the candidate that has stayed in the safe spaces of Mar-a-Lago and rallies of his loyalists for years. Trump rambled for more than 90 minutes, making it the longest acceptance speech in U.S. history and outlasting the interest of the audience, some of whom fell asleep.
He went on to recite his usual litany of lies: that Democrats cheated in the 2020 presidential election (they did not), that crime is going up (it’s plummeting), that inflation is the worst we’ve ever had (it’s around 3%; the worst was around 23%), that Democrats want to quadruple people’s taxes (CNN fact checker Daniel Dale calls this “imaginary”), and so on. Dale called it “a remarkably dishonest acceptance speech.”
Journalist James Fallows posted: “Of the maybe 10,000 political speeches I've heard over the years, this was overall the worst.” Statistician Nate Silver’s judgment was harsher, in a way: he began with “It’s a weird but a pretty good speech,” then posted “Semi-retract this tweet, this speech is boring AF, but there are worse things politically speaking than being boring.” Shortly after, came: “Fully RETRACT and RESCIND, sometimes it seems like both parties are trying to throw this election.”
MSNBC’s Chris Hayes watched the unhinged speech and concluded: "This is not a colossus, this is not the big bad wolf, this is not a vigorous and incredibly deft political communicator. This is an old man in decline who's been doing the same schtick for a very long time and it's really wearing thin."
The point, though, as Trump meandered through attacks on immigrants and a diatribe about the fictional character cannibal Hannibal Lecter—who he might think was real—as it always has been, was to present a picture of the U.S. under siege by enemies who are persecuting him because he represents true Americans and that he must be returned to office because only he can vanquish those enemies. Greg Sargent of The New Republic noted that Trump cannot offer a “unity” message because “Trump himself knows the MAGA masses will not be satiated without expansive displays of rage, cruelty and sadism directed at hated out groups and designated enemies of MAGA.”
For years, observers have noted that Trump’s approach to politics is patterned on the “kayfabe” at the heart of professional wrestling. Kayfabe is the performance aspect of professional wrestling, in which the actors play out relationships and scenes in which there are good and evil, love and hate, loyalty and betrayal. According to journalist Abraham Josephine Reisman, in old-school kayfabe the actors never let their masks slip, and while the audience knew what they were seeing must be fake, they played along with the illusion.
But in the 1990s, the barrier between reality and illusion blurred as wrestlers and promoters tried to increase the viability of the fading industry by tossing reality into the performances: real-life insults—the more outrageous the better—and real-life events. Decoding what was real and what was not drove engagement until in 1999, an estimated 18% of Americans, about 50 million people, called themselves fans. This “neokayfabe,” Reisman wrote in the New York Times in 2023, “rests on a slippery, ever-wobbling jumble of truths, half-truths, and outright falsehoods, all delivered with the utmost passion and commitment.”
Neokayfabe, Reisman wrote, “turns the world into a hall of mirrors from which it is nearly impossible to escape. It rots the mind and eats the soul.”
Trump participated in a storyline in this neokayfabe with World Wrestling Entertainment owner Vince McMahon in 2007, in part billed as a battle over hair. Eventually he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, and many observers have made the link between neokayfabe and his approach to politics. Indeed, he even blended the two explicitly when he chose McMahon’s wife, Linda, to head the U.S. Small Business Administration during his presidency.
Neokayfabe and politics came together again last night at the Republican National Convention, as Linda McMahon, wrestler Hulk Hogan, and musician Kid Rock, whose music has been featured at wrestling events and who is also a member of the WWE Hall of Fame, all participated.
“So all you criminals, all you lowlifes, all you scumbags…. Whatcha gonna do when Donald Trump and all the Trumpamaniacs run wild on you, brother?!" Hogan yelled to wild applause after ripping off his shirt to show a Trump-Vance shirt. Like the other performers at the convention, he painted a portrait of Trump’s presidency, and of the United States since Trump left office, that was a fantasy of good and evil. Hogan reinforced that there was no way Trump was going to reach toward unity in Milwaukee. His approach to the world cannot be moderated. It depends on the idea that there are two teams in the performance and one must vanquish the other.
Part of that storyline requires rewriting not just the recent past, but our history. At the convention last night, Donald Trump Jr.’s fiancée, Kimberly Guilfoyle, said: “It is no wonder that the heroes who stormed the beaches of Normandy and faced down communism sadly say they don’t recognize our country anymore.” But the Allied soldiers in World War II were not fighting communism. They were fighting fascism. The three great Allied powers were Great Britain, the United States, and the communist Soviet Union.
It might be that Guilfoyle misspoke, or that she doesn’t know even the most basic facts of our history. Or it might be that by rewriting that history to put America on the side of the fascists, people like Guilfoyle hope to make that alliance more palatable to MAGA followers today.

A Widespread Microsoft Outage Disrupted Flights, Banks, Media Outlets And Companies Around The World On Friday And Highlighted Dependence On Software From A Handful Of Providers – New York City reporting
The issue affected Microsoft 365 apps and services, and escalating disruptions continued hours after the technology company said it was gradually fixing it.
Microsoft 365 posted on X that the company was “working on rerouting the impacted traffic to alternate systems to alleviate impact in a more expedient fashion” and that they were “observing a positive trend in service availability.”
Major disruptions reported by airlines and airports grew. Flight tracking website Flightaware reports more nearly 1,000 flights canceled and over 12,000 more are delayed. Chicago O'Hare, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta, Newark , La Guardia and Boston Logan International Airport lead Flightaware's "misery map" with the most delays and cancellations.
In the U.S., the FAA said the airlines United, Delta and Allegiant had all been grounded. American Airlines lifted its ground stop just after 5 a.m ET, saying they were able to "safely re-establish operations."
An earlier ground stop for Frontier Airlines was lifted just after midnight, and the carrier said they had resumed normal operations, for now.
Travelers at Los Angeles International Airport slept on a jetway floor, using backpacks and other luggage for pillows, due to a delayed United flight to Dulles International Airport early on Friday.
Across the pond, Edinburgh Airport said the system outage meant waiting times were longer than usual. London’s Stansted Airport said some airline check-in services were being completed manually, but flights were still operating.
The budget airline Ryanair said they are "experiencing disruption across the network due to a global third party IT outage which is out of our control. We advise all passengers to arrive at the airport at least three hours before their scheduled departure time.”
Widespread problems were reported at Australian airports, where lines grew and some passengers were stranded as online check-in services and self-service booths were disabled. Passengers in Melbourne queued for more than an hour to check in, although flights were still operating. Airlines Virgin Australia and Qantas were severely affected by the outage.
News outlets in Australia — including the ABC and Sky News — were unable to broadcast on their TV and radio channels, and reported sudden shutdowns of Windows-based computers. Some news anchors broadcast live online from dark offices, in front of computers showing “blue screens of death.” Telecommunications providers, banks and media broadcasters were also disrupted as they lost access to computer systems. Outages reported on the site DownDetector included the banks NAB, Commonwealth and Bendigo, as well as internet and phone providers such as Telstra. The New Zealand banks ASB and Kiwibank said their services were down.
Television stations in the United Kingdom were being disrupted by the computer issues.
Hospitals in Britain and Germany also reported problems.
Israel’s Cyber Directorate said that it was among the places affected by the global outages, attributing them to a problem with the cybersecurity platform Crowdstrike. The outage also hit the country’s post offices and hospitals, according to the ministries of communication and health.
In South Africa, at least one major bank said it was experiencing “nationwide service disruptions” as customers reported they were unable to make payments using their bank cards at grocery stores and gas stations.
Numerous European airlines are using manual check-in.

Recraft Revisited Review: Is This AI Platform Worth Your Subscription?
Rating: 🥱 (Decaf) - Don't bother. Save your money and energy for something better.
Important Update: February 21, 2025
Following the service outage discussed in this review, I escalated the matter to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and initiated a bank chargeback procedure after Recraft refused my refund request.
Today, Recraft suddenly reversed their position. In an email dated February 21, they stated:
“We discussed your case again internally and decided to make an exception regarding your refund. We sincerely regret any inconvenience this incident caused you.”
Notably, they simultaneously banned me from their Discord server—their primary support channel—minutes after sending the refund confirmation.
This resolution further confirms the operational and customer service concerns detailed in my original review, and my rating remains unchanged.
(Original review continues below…)
Background Context
My journey with Recraft began on Replicate, where I first encountered their AI image generation capabilities. The quality of outputs impressed me enough to transition from paying per image generation (essentially covering GPU time) to a direct membership with set monthly credits. This eventually led to purchasing an annual subscription during their Black Friday sale, a decision that seemed sensible at the time given my consistent usage patterns.
For context, I've extensively tested most major AI art generation platforms. My previous reviews of Midjourney, Leonardo AI, Freepik AI, and others have documented the evolving landscape of generative art tools. This experience provides a comprehensive framework for assessing Recraft's performance not just in isolation, but within the competitive ecosystem they inhabit.
The Platform Promise vs. Reality
Recraft positions itself as a sophisticated AI art generation platform with a robust feature set and responsive development cycle. Their marketing highlights regular feature drops and consistent improvement, creating expectations of a premium experience that justifies their subscription model.
The reality, unfortunately, tells a different story. While Recraft does indeed release new features approximately bi-weekly, these implementations frequently demonstrate concerning patterns:
First, the platform consistently prioritizes desktop functionality over mobile experience. New features often launch exclusively on web versions, leaving mobile users – who constitute a significant portion of the user base – without access to capabilities they've paid for. This creates a fractured experience where subscribers receive dramatically different value depending on their access method.
Second, many features arrive in what can generously be described as "half-baked" states. Initial implementations often lack polish, contain undocumented limitations, or introduce new bugs that affect existing functionality. This suggests a development philosophy prioritizing feature quantity over quality, with insufficient testing before deployment.
The February Service Collapse
The most significant recent failure occurred in mid-February 2025, when the platform experienced a complete service disruption that persisted for over five consecutive days. During this period, paid subscribers found themselves unable to access core platform functionality – specifically, the generation history feature became completely non-functional, displaying persistent "Loading failed..." errors despite users having functional network connectivity.
What transformed this technical failure into a genuine service crisis was the company's handling of the situation. Despite the widespread nature of the outage, Recraft made no official announcement acknowledging the issue. Instead, users discovered the problem individually, creating a ripple of confusion and frustration across the community.
When users sought assistance in the Discord server – Recraft's primary support channel – they encountered concerning patterns:
1. Delayed acknowledgment of the issue
2. Inconsistent information about the nature and scope of the problem
3. Premature announcements of resolution followed by continued service disruption
A Recraft moderator, speaking on condition of anonymity, expressed significant frustration about this communication breakdown: "What really pisses me off is they didn't put an announcement for people to know what's going on."
This sentiment reflects a deeper issue – as the moderator explained, "Discord is not a priority, or they're just not used to using Discord as a daily basis tool."
This moderator, who has experience across multiple AI platform communities, provides valuable insight into industry-wide communication patterns. Their perspective suggests these issues aren't unique to Recraft, but represent a concerning trend in how some AI startups approach community management.
This disconnect creates a particularly problematic situation given Recraft's support structure. With Discord serving as their primary customer service channel, the failure to properly utilize this platform leaves moderators as unwitting frontline representatives handling user frustration without adequate information or support.
The Customer Service Disconnect
The service outage revealed troubling patterns in Recraft's approach to customer communication. When I submitted a formal refund request citing the extended service failure, their response epitomized these issues.
Their initial reply demonstrated fundamental communication problems: "Apologies for the delay in responding — we are currently experiencing a high volume of requests. Could you please provide the email address you used to contact us so we can locate your case?"
This request for information I had already provided multiple times reflected deeper organizational issues. As the Discord moderator privately observed: "We are in the plain AI era and they still have to ask you again for your email when you've sent it already more than once... are they using analog computers? This is ridiculous."
When they finally responded to my refund request, Recraft's characterization of the situation was particularly concerning:
"The outage was not considered major as it only affected the History view on the mobile app, while other core features remained functional... Considering that you've already used significantly more than 50 credits, which is our monthly allocation for the Standard plan... we don't believe a refund is warranted for what was a temporary and limited issue."
This assessment fundamentally mischaracterized:
1. The scope of the outage (which affected all access to generated content, not just "History view")
2. The duration (describing five days as merely "temporary")
3. The impact (claiming "core features remained functional" when users couldn't access any generated images)
The irony of their "minor issue" claim became particularly apparent when they released a comprehensive update via the App Store that required both client-side and server-side changes to fix the problems. This directly contradicted their public Twitter statement that they had "been working on this issue all weekend," demonstrating the severity of a problem they later attempted to downplay when faced with refund requests and regulatory pressure.
Due to Recraft's refusal to provide a refund, which violates Australian Consumer Law and my rights as a consumer, I've been forced to involve regulatory authorities. While I won't detail the entire process, I want to note that I'm taking this matter seriously enough to pursue legal remedies if necessary. Australian consumer protection laws establish clear guarantees for service quality and appropriate remedies when services fail to meet those guarantees. Unfortunately other countries may not offer the same protection to citizens.
The Scale Question
Recraft has publicly claimed approximately 3 million users, yet this figure raises questions when compared to observable engagement patterns. As one moderator noted: "Discord is not where the majority of their paid customers are... I'll bet on that. There aren't many people making suggestions here, all the suggestions and bug reports are made in the official bug report page, and there's not so much going on compared to the 3M users announced."
This observation raises a critical question: "It can't be that 1000 users have bugs and suggestions and the rest of the 3M are OK with the app..." This disconnect between claimed user numbers and visible engagement creates uncertainty about the platform's actual scale and growth.
The Development Priority Problem
Recraft's development approach demonstrates a consistent prioritization pattern that affects user experience:
1. New features take precedence over stability
2. Desktop experience is prioritized over mobile functionality
3. Feature quantity outweighs quality implementation
4. Marketing announcements supersede comprehensive documentation
5. New user acquisition appears to outrank existing customer satisfaction
This approach might drive short-term growth metrics but undermines long-term platform viability. When basic functionality remains inaccessible for extended periods without acknowledgment or compensation, it erodes the trust essential for subscription-based services.
The moderator provided revealing insight into how these priorities manifest internally: "They f--d up yesterday when they changed some things in the UI." This suggests hasty implementation without adequate testing – a pattern that recurs throughout their development cycle.
The Communication Vacuum
Perhaps most concerning is Recraft's approach to internal communication. Discord moderators – the very people tasked with supporting users – frequently find themselves as uninformed as the customers they're meant to assist. As one moderator expressed: "They are online but believe me they are not in Discord for sure, because they do this to me all the time. I don't think they know how to use Discord properly or they just don't give a s--t for the notifications."
This communication vacuum creates significant problems:
1. Moderators lack information needed to support users effectively
2. Users receive inconsistent or inaccurate information
3. Technical issues persist longer than necessary
4. Community frustration compounds due to information scarcity
5. Trust erodes with each unsupported communication cycle
Verdict
Recraft demonstrates impressive technical capabilities when functioning properly. Their AI model produces quality outputs, and their development team clearly possesses the technical skill to implement regular feature updates. However, these strengths are severely undermined by fundamental issues in operational approach, communication strategy, and customer service philosophy.
The platform's handling of the February service disruption reveals concerning patterns that prospective subscribers should carefully consider. When a company characterizes complete service failure as "minor," uses past usage to deny compensation for current failures, and leaves their own support moderators uninformed about critical issues, it raises fundamental questions about organizational priorities and customer respect.
For users considering Recraft, I recommend waiting for evidence of improved operational stability and communication practices before committing to paid subscriptions. For current subscribers experiencing service issues, documenting all failures and communication attempts may prove necessary if seeking remedy becomes required.
The platform maintains potential, but until Recraft demonstrates a consistent commitment to service reliability, transparent communication, and respectful customer support, alternative platforms likely offer more dependable creative experiences.
Rating: 🥱 (Decaf) - The "Decaf" rating reflects Recraft's fundamental service reliability issues and problematic customer service approach. While the AI model itself has potential, the platform's operational shortcomings—extended service outages, misleading communication, and dismissive customer support—make it impossible to recommend. A service that leaves paying customers without access for five days, then characterizes this failure as "minor," fails to meet basic standards for professional creative tools. Until Recraft demonstrates significant improvement in reliability and customer respect, your creative energy is better invested elsewhere.

Affordable Solar Panel Installation in Sydney – Australian Design Solar
As the world embraces sustainability, solar energy has become a viable and economical solution for reducing energy bills while contributing to a greener planet. In Sydney, Australian Design Solar is at the forefront of offering affordable solar panel installations, ensuring that more homes and businesses can access renewable energy solutions without breaking the bank. In this blog, we’ll explore how affordable solar panel installation works, the benefits of going solar, and why Australian Design Solar is the ideal partner for your solar needs.
Why Choose Solar Power for Your Home or Business?
Solar energy has become a popular alternative to traditional energy sources due to its numerous environmental and financial benefits. By harnessing the power of the sun, you can generate your own electricity, which can drastically reduce your reliance on the grid. Here are some reasons why solar power is a great option for homes and businesses in Sydney:
1. Lower Energy Bills
One of the most immediate and impactful benefits of installing solar panels is the reduction in your monthly electricity bills. Solar systems allow you to generate your own power, meaning you’ll rely less on your energy provider. Over time, this can result in significant savings, especially with rising electricity costs.
2. Increased Property Value
Homes and businesses that have solar installations are increasingly becoming more attractive to potential buyers. Solar panels can increase the resale value of your property, as they offer long-term savings and are an attractive feature for eco-conscious buyers.
3. Environmental Impact
Solar energy is a clean, renewable energy source. By switching to solar, you can reduce your carbon footprint, helping to combat climate change. Solar panels produce zero emissions during operation, making them one of the most environmentally friendly energy sources available.
4. Government Incentives
The Australian government offers incentives for homeowners and businesses who install solar systems. Programs like the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) provide financial assistance, reducing the initial investment cost of installing solar panels. These incentives can make solar energy even more affordable.
5. Energy Independence
By generating your own solar power, you are less dependent on the energy grid. This provides more stability in the event of power outages or fluctuations in energy prices. Many homeowners also opt for solar battery storage, ensuring they can store excess energy for use during cloudy days or at night.
What Makes Australian Design Solar the Right Choice for Affordable Solar Panel Installation?
When it comes to choosing the right company for your solar panel installation in Sydney, there are several factors to consider: cost, quality of service, experience, and reliability. Australian Design Solar stands out in all these aspects, making them the top choice for homeowners and businesses in Sydney.
1. Affordable Solar Panel Installations
At Australian Design Solar, affordability is at the core of their services. They believe that going solar should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their budget. By offering a range of solar panel systems and packages, Australian Design Solar ensures that customers can find the right solution to meet both their energy needs and their budget.
