These are the illustrations I did for this year BBC Merlin Reverse Bang, I was lucky to work with @salamandair , she made a marvelous story, The Talking Dead , please go and read it!

Summary:

It’s been six years since the zombie apocalypse began and Merlin’s long since lost all hope of ever seeing his king return, only doing what he can to help the little gang of survivors he found survive. He’s just fine living like that. Until one day, while he and a few of the survivors spot a peculiar looking zombie while looking for supplies. [Written for BBC Merlin Reverse Big Bang 2025]

Bad things happen to those who wander alone or unprepared in the Darkling Woods. Everyone has heard the stories. A friend’s brother’s neighbour who wandered too far into the trees and was never seen again. The son of a shepherd three villages over who vanished while searching for a missing lamb. The band of mercenaries hired to threaten a town into paying a tax increase then never returned to collect the second part of their wages. Something terrible lives in the woods, the stories say, and none who enter alone ever emerge again. Or: After Lancelot is gravely injured by a group of druid hunters, he's found by the most unlikely of rescuers: the fearsome Monster of the Darkling Woods and her companion, Merlin, who really wishes she'd stop bringing him broken creatures to fix.

summary;

Merlin tugged at the peeling skin on the horn, it was hard and smooth like solid wax. He rubbed, tugged, then felt the relief of it cracking. Then he scratched and felt something soft.

He tugged harder at the skin. It lifted off easily and the soft thing started to expand. Merlin poked at it. He felt it slump.

“What in Albion?” He asked aloud. He pulled at it and it unfurled. He saw it drop, he felt it brush his ear and land on his shoulder. Merlin squeezed it.

He bolted downstairs.

“Merlin?” Gaius groaned when he lit a candle. Merlin stared at the mirror in horror.

The growths were feathery but felt like the smooth, snake skin when he touched them. Completely unfurled they fell just past his shoulder blades. In the candle light they were an iridescent black or dark blue.

Got to collaborate with the amazing @approachroach /Alex who took my guilty favorite prompt of injured merlin and created an absolute masterpiece of a fic with it!

Fic summary :

“I was here a week ago,” Arthur blurted out. “Before, it was a desert—it almost killed me. Now it’s a rainforest.” Arthur stated. “I’ve only ever heard about rainforests in tales about magic, and in those stories, the magic was dormant. Its only purpose was to keep the forest alive. Here, I can even feel the magic in the air. And if I’m honest, it feels a little like coming home. It feels safe.” He stated it so simply Merlin almost didn’t realise the magnitude of what he was admitting.

His admission, if he was anyone else, would have him hanged.

Arthur Pendreagon is a lot of things; he is his fathers son. Camelot’s Prince. The Captain of the Knights. Himself, is rarely one of them.

What if, for once, he was not the things he was supposed to be and was simply, himself? He confesses something he had never really thought much of and somehow everything else does not matter anymore. Q&A with Zaz

Who is your favorite DA villain?

Not that I view him strictly as a villain but I’m incredibly partial to Loghain. He’s very multifaceted, very easy to hate but also very easy to like once you give him a chance. He’s loyal, dedicated to Maric beyond reason, conflicted to a point of ruin. I just think he’s neat.

What do you listen to while creating?

I’m a metalhead. I love power metal especially. It might be cheesy to some but I just have a soft spot for those high pitched screams. It’s such an energetic genre and it lends itself to my way of capturing a scene. And I am delighted that A LOT of bands use fantasy themes for their albums.

What drew you to tackle a Big Bang?

I’ve participated in a Big Bang for BBC’s Merlin back in 2013 and I have very fond memories of it. Back then with graphic edits and not with paintings. This year I participated in a Reverse Bang, also for BBC’s Merlin, and it sort of rekindled my love for fan fests. I love participating in zines but I keep ending up working kind of isolated (deliberately, I have to add, because I know by now how I work best but where's the fun) and I wanted to force myself to connect with other fans again. Plus, I really enjoy the work author and artist can do together and wanted to give it my all with Dragon Age as well.

Merlin had enough of Arthur's cruelty and blindness. He bury his feelings for his king and do what he must, as Emrys, to bring back the magic to land and save the life of innocents. He won't wait for prophecy to happen by the hand of someone anymore, it is time for him to do it himself.
