Soren & Corvus, Trust, and The Ocean Arcanum

For Badger Boi Soren Week Day 5: Trust

I've been rewatching S5 recently, and throughout the season there are recurring themes about trust. Obviously, this grabbed my attention because of how easily many moments can be easily connected to Soren & Corvus.

"To have that kind of strength, it's not enough to love someone. You have to trust them to share the burdens you carry." (Amaya, 5x04)

In the scene shown (7x05,) it is pretty clearly illustrated that Corvus knows about the picture of Soren's family that he keeps. (This has later been extra-confirmed by Eugene messing around on twitter, as usual.) It's likely that Soren was only able to cope with his mother being brought up thanks to Corvus. We all know that Soren has a huge habit of masking his emotions, so the confirmation that he was able to make the step towards healing by telling Corvus about this, by actually trusting him with that burden, clearly implies a much deeper connection.

"Rayla, I was wrong. I waited too long. I hope you know-" "I know." (Callum & Rayla, 5x04)

Something about both pairs here having a moment where they're on the brink of death and basically recreating the Star Wars "I love you." "I know." scene. It's interesting contrasting them; Rayla's "I know" is much more assertive, she cuts Callum off, communicating that she knows what he was going to say. If this line were extended, the same meaning could be communicated by "I already know." But Soren's isn't. His "I know" is shakier, quieter. If this line were changed, I could see the same meaning being communicated by "You do," Because (to me,) this line represents Soren realizing that yeah, Corvus really is There for him. He has been in the past and will continue to be. Rayla's is an acknowledgment, but Soren's is an acceptance.

"The ocean arcanum is accepting there are depths you can't see." (Callum, 5x08)

Once again, we come back to the "Corvus knowing" motif. Despite Soren not exactly telling Corvus word-for-word (at least on screen,) how he feels about his family- about his mom- he knows and accepts that those feelings, whatever they are, exist. Corvus is a tracker. He notices the smallest things.

"Callum, I notice the tiniest details. I can tell if a fly's leg is broken. Or merely sprained." (Corvus, 7x01)

"Corvus, he's sharp, and he's perceptive-" (Eugene Ramos, The Banter Lodge: On Script With Eugene Ramos and Michal Shick, February 6th, 2025)

Corvus is repeatedly presented as always being aware of his surroundings. It only fits that he knows the people he surrounds himself with. Especially Soren. Corvus sees these depths- and accepts them, giving Soren the space and time he needs to process his emotions without bugging him.

In 5x08, Rayla does a similar thing for Callum.

She can clearly tell that he's going through some pretty heavy emotions, but doesn't pry. Instead of pressuring Callum to talk about what's bothering him, she comforts him to help with the processing of these feelings, just like Corvus in 6x02.

Both Corvus and Rayla are aware of their respective partner's depths, even if they aren't immediately visible-

"I have seen it written in his eyes." (Aaravos, 7x07)

-but still choose to accept these depths, and help everyone heal.

Yeah it is concerning tbh bc SOMEONE had the idea of Callum choosing Soren's hand to get chopped off in 5x08 and I RAN with it but does sorvus at the end make it better??

Corvus shoved his way through the crowd. Callum had barely registered his presence before he had pulled Soren into the fiercest of embraces.

His eyes fell on Soren's lack-of-an-arm. “That's new.”

Soren chuckled weakly. “Yep.”

Corvus took his arm and stump in his hands, gazing at him in a way that made Callum a little uncomfortable. “How about you lie down? I’ll make some tea.”

“Hot leaf juice?” Soren laughed.

“Jasmine,” Corvus sing-songed, hooking his arm through Soren’s.

Soren pumped his arm in the air as he let Corvus guide him away. “Yay! Hot leaf juice!”

for bbsw day 6: trust Soren’s daughter loves magic, and how can he not see her?

Ariel is five when she first expresses an interest in anything other than coloring books. She's always been a quiet kid, and Soren hadn't thought much of it– taking after Corvus, he assumed. 

So when she lights up, grinning ear-to-ear when she spies her Uncle Callum do some pretty Sky magic trick for Rayla, she ran over with wide eyes. Callum, always good with kids, had crouched down and obliged her with another one, creating a rainbow of bursts of light as her eyes shone. 

She's seven when she asks to learn. It'd only been a matter of time, Soren knew, but had hoped it would stretch on until a time he could sit her down and talk to her about, well– everything. As far as she knew, her Aunt Claudia had passed away of a disease before she was born, which he'd convinced himself was technically true so he could sleep better at night.

She'd asked Callum about magic every chance she got, getting him to do tricks for her until he was spent and Soren had to pull her away. Terry grew her gardens of flowers, Ariel always coming back from days with him adorned in flower crowns and daisy chains. She'd checked out all the books she could find from the library, memorizing them. And she looked so different from Claudia, dark-eyed and fair-haired with enough freckles to fill a night sky, but she was all he could see, having to tear his eyes away from his daughter when red filled his vision. 

It gets so bad that Corvus had to talk him back from several anxiety spirals, that he barely sleeps because Ariel's smiling, innocent image keeps flashing with Claudia's, and all he can see and feel is his late sister's body slumping, limp, and collapsing to the ground as he sobbed over her.

How can he let on to his daughter just how much he despised her only passion, the thing that made her feel alive? How could he take it away from her, much less let her on to his aversion? How can he burden her with that? 

He lets Corvus supervise what she reads. Dark magic tutorials and ingredients and spells have been omitted from the books across Xadia and Evrkynd, and they're working on doing it with the rest of the continent, but dark magic always seems to find a way to slither into even the purest of places.
