Mod Coining: Canine Deviaesis

Deviae and it's subset of labels and terminology exists to aid others in language that would better their species and morphological dysphoria. This includes the addition of terms for other species and for humans.

In this post, I'm using @status-quo-hater's TWDP and TMDP terms but shortening it to Typical Wolffian Pathways (TWP) and Typical Mullerian Pathways (TMP) for ease of wording, but they mean the same thing.

Bicce (noun), Biccan (plural form) - An old English word meaning "female dog" or "female canine". Refers to deviatypal sex traits that align with TMP, but not necessarily born with. A deviae bicce is someone with TMP, they are not TMP.

Reu (noun), Reus (plural form) - A Dutch word meaning "male dog" or "male canine". Refers to deviatypal sex traits that align with TWP, but not necessarily born with. A deviae reu is someone with TWP, they are not TWP.

Simu (noun), Simus (plural form) - From gono(simu)listic, which is a term for theriform animals that have both gametes aligned with TMP and TWP. This is not a term about intersex people. This refers exclusively to deviae people who have/transition to have both gametes somehow.

Aves moved ahead of him to punch a code into the utility bay lock.

The broad blast doors slid back. A wash of cold air rolled out, raising goosebumps on Talon’s skin and carrying a wave of strident cursing to assault his ears. For a moment, Talon didn’t move.

Off center, to the left of the central drain, Nephi was bolted to floor of his make-shift cell. He was spread-eagled and half-naked, stripped of his boots and upper clothing, leaving only his thick, Potolli-weave kilt covering him from waist to knee. Magnetic binders clamped around each wrist and ankle stretching him taut. Bruises were blossoming across his torso and jaw, dark against his pale skin.

Wrenching his head up at an awkward angle, he abruptly went silent. Then his eyes narrowed and his breath came out in a vicious hiss.

“You rankweed-sucking son of a tairn,” he snarled. “You’re dead. You have to be. Even your luck can’t be enough to stop a fracking grenade.”

“I have never relied on luck,” Talon said, levelly. “Just my people.”

The prisoner sneered. “I have people, too. Good ones.” His eyes glinted. “They won’t let you keep me —”

“I have no intention of keeping you,” Talon interrupted, his tone icy. “But I don’t have time right now to properly package you for your return, so I’m afraid you’ll have to wait.”

Talon shifted his gaze to the shadow standing silent in the corner. “Can he stay here?”

“He’s not going anywhere.” Mara shrugged, the movement barely visible. “And there's a drain. We can hose him down if he skrags himself.”

“Fucking bicce.” Nephi spat in her direction.

Mara ignored him, her eyes never leaving Talon. Taking a step back and turning away, Talon motioned with two fingers. Mara strode from the room and slipped past him. Up close, he could see the full extent of the damage to her cheekbone and temple, the deep blackness welling up around her eye as it started to swell shut. He caught, too, the subtle way her right hand braced her left arm, and his chest tightened.

Aves palmed the door controls and they snicked shut and then locked with a solid clang.“How did you know?” He demanded, the instant the locks engaged, whirling on Mara. “Why didn’t you say something?”

“I didn’t know,” Mara bit out. “I just… had a feeling. That something was wrong. I went to take a look around.” She gestured with her good hand. “And found him.”

“You and your gorram hunches!” Aves dragged his hands through his hair.

Talon had been tracking those hunches for six months now. Tracking and evaluating and researching — and from the tension in every line of Mara’s body, she knew his theory.

“Hit medical,” he told her. They would have a discussion about the gifts he suspected she was hiding, but this was neither the time nor the place. He gestured to her cheek, resisting the urge to touch her. “Get that seen to.”

She ducked her head in a sharp nod and then stalked off toward the lift.

“Shouldn’t you be headed there, too?” Aves prodded pointedly. “Even I’ve been by now.”

“I’ll go shortly,” he promised. “I know where I want to meet the buyers, and I need to instruct Corvis appropriately.”

Aves glowered. “I will find out if you don’t get cleared,” he warned. “And I will herf-besh-four you if I have to.”

Talon’s lips quirked slightly at the threat. “That won’t be necessary,” he assured smoothly. “You should get some sleep. I'll see myself to Annowirski’s care once I’ve done the rounds.”

“Yeah, well, you’d better,” Aves muttered. Heaving a tired sigh, he left, his steps heavy as he retreated toward the primarily living deck and the peace and quiet of his bunk.

Talon watched him go, aware in the quiet of how close he’d come to losing his friend — losing everyone. Setting his jaw, he returned to the bridge.

Woops guess who started watching Gargoyles with the squad in my discord server :)

We only watched the episodes the show first premiered with (the “Awakening” episodes) but holy shit I forgot how much I LOVE this show.

The animation is absolutely gorgeous and so fluid, and there’s so much nuance to them! Little things, like Goliath constantly using his tail as a means of attack, or how he is animated to be so careful when handling Demona or Elisa. And how differently each character moves; I love how Lex is often on all four whereas everyone else is predominantly standing upright. And how Broadway walks with a lot more weight than the rest of the cast given him being a BICC BOI.

And don’t get me started on the animalistic traits the Gargoyles exhibit man. I’ve always loved that, when something that isn’t human shows behaviors and actions that aren’t human, like the Gargoyles running on all four or when surprised they perk up like a dog listening for threats. It’s so cool, and sells the idea that while very intelligent and sapient, the Gargoyles still operate somewhat on instinct (or at least moreso than humans do).

The way the scenes were shot were crazy too man, especially the creativity of the transitions and particularly how they handled the compositions and direction of the climbing and flight scenes. The action also is top notch man.

And the voice acting, the sound mixing. GAH DAMN. Every character has an excellent voice; I already knew that but hearing it again just really hit it home just how much the character’s voices fit them and the tasty skill behind the actors themselves man. Not to mention the personalities; I forgot how often Elisa pulls wise cracks, I love her. ;w;

As for overall sound, all of it slapped, but a thing I absolutely love that a lot of other media that feature monsters in them don’t do often is backing the vocals with more feral/animalistic/inhuman sounds to really bring the point home that these things aren’t human. Like, Goliath’s cry backed with a lion’s roar, or the cat-like snarls Demona hisses out, or the whale-ish groans and bro I’m a fucking SUCKER for that shit.

But yeah! Just wanted to gush about the show a little bit. It was so fucking good, we were eatin good when it aired back in the day cuz jees. The quality and effort is crazy. I’m excited to watch the rest of the series and uhhhh ya’ll may have to see a few doodles from me for that there AU as we go. owo
