It features ethereal, dreamy, vintage, and nostalgic-like visuals.
Porcelain-gaze is supposed to be reminiscent of bands like “Cocteau twins”, “Mazzy star” and “Cranes”.

New Video: Babel Map Shares Stormy "Pazuzu" @usthemgroup
Initially started as s solo, trip-hop/electronic music project of then-Philadelphia-based singer/songwriter and musician Jessica Drummer, Babel Map became a full-fledged band when Drummer relocated to Harrisburg, PA in 2015. Upon her arrival to the commonwealth’s capital, Drummer started playing live shows, networking and playing with other musicians. After a series of lineup changes, the band’s…

Sooooo, Russian edition of Babel: An Arcane History by R.F. Kuang is almost here, and I've made maps for endpaper of this book. More about this project on my behance.
Color tests:
This was my first attempt with such plans, so I heavily used map of Oxford by Spencer Hoffman (1929) in many aspect, and Google Earth 3D for understanding how historical building is looks like. Some of my references and inspirations:

the invitation (2015), dir. karyn kusama / babel, r.f. kuang
guy who's only watched the invitation (2015) seeing a depiction of grief: wow this is just like the invitation (2015)
#obviously because their source material deals with very different subject matter#the arc of grief is very different. exploring grief is the point in the invitation#whereas its like. a byproduct of colonialism in babel#so if you wanted to more closely map robins journey of grief it would be to like. eden#who Actually tried to go through with dying. but of course in the films context this is a bad thing#in babel its not just about him. so theres grief but theres also blowing urself up with the train#FDAGFFDGVB BECAUSE I ONLY USED ONE LINE OF DIALOGUE FROM THE INVITATION IT LOOKS LIKE REACHING.#but the rest of the conversation is very much the same line:#theyre talking about the death of the guys kid and hes blaming himself#his gf says he couldnt have known and that its not his fault#then he says that. and she says 'moving forward isnt a betrayal'#and theres another excerpt i have saved where robin insists to victoire that they (ramy. griffin etc) were better people#and that they should have lived. guilt basically#spoilers#once more. i feel like a lot of the stuff i like just has the same like. feeling#if u take the invitation as the starting point#look at anything else and you'd be like. well you Would like that wouldnt you

So the S-stages for Babel don't share the same convention as the normal and EX stages. They're not a call and response between Theresa and Theresis. Instead, they're "Simulated Assassinations" and their description is about the construction of a simulation.
>Simulation building complete. We will stop the assassins in the city this time.
The description for BB-S-4, "Simulated Assassination 4". Given the name of the stages, this is seemingly involving some kind of simulation regarding Theresa's assassination. Someone is running a simulation to see if they could have stopped the assassins from leaving Kazdel.
This is further supported by the number of Assassins on this stage.
There are 13 Deathveil Assassins on S-4, and boy do you feel it. Never want to deal with this many of these bastards again. But this isn't the only stage with 13 Assassins.
BB-9 also has 13 Assassins on it, so the connection at least to me is pretty clear. Your goal, on this map, is to stop the assassination of Theresa by stopping the assassins in the city.
It is worth at the moment to discuss the diegetics of the battle screen for a moment. When you're in a map, that is a simulation of a battlefield that is present in the Doctor's mind, the source of his ability to be precise and calculating in a tactical role. But there are moments where this diegesis is broken. BB-10, for instance, is a reversal of this outcome, where Theresa is in the Doctor's mind and the simulation is a battle in the Doctor's head. In addition, there is the matter of PRTS's involvement, and this means that it's potentially likely that these simulations can be done on PRTS's side as well.
Which means that the narrative of this stage, is that someone is running a simulation to prevent Theresa's assassination. Given the epithet of these stages "You the Constant, You are Me" this points to the only two "constants" on Terra: the Doctor, and Kal'tsit, and I can think of someone who wracked with guilt would do simulations to prove that it should have been possible to stop her death.

Languages Shape Worlds — And the People in Them
“Language is a road map of a culture.” – Rita Mae Brown
When creating fictional worlds, don’t stop at borders—let language do the heavy lifting. Dialects, vocabulary, accents, and even how characters switch between tongues can reveal class, power, intimacy, and conflict.
Here’s how to use language as a storytelling tool:
1. Create Language Layers: Dialect ≠ Language
Different regions or social classes in your world should speak differently, even if it’s the same “official” language.
Example:
In your fantasy kingdom:
Nobles say: “I shall accompany you to the citadel.”
Soldiers say: “I’ll head with you to the keep.”
Farmers say: “Reckon I’ll come with, if yer goin’ to the tower.”
Same meaning, entirely different texture. Ask:
• Who has access to formal education?
• Who clings to older versions of the language?
• Who uses borrowed words from other cultures?
2. Portray Multilingual Conversations Without Confusing the Reader
You don’t need to write entire dialogue in your constructed language. Instead:
Option A: Tag and Translate
“Aqele asaar,” she whispered. Peace upon your house.
This works well when you want to signal cultural depth without overwhelming the reader. Use sparingly for ritual phrases, swears, or proverbs.
Option B: Inferred Meaning via Context
He said something in Old Avelan—sharp and soft like a blade drawn from silk. Whatever it meant, it made her flinch.
The vibe matters more than the word-for-word meaning. Use body language, tone, and character reactions to fill in the blanks.
Option C: In-World Translation
Let the characters do the work:
“He just called me a—what, a cabbage?”
“Not quite. ‘Rot-bellied cabbage-eater.’ It’s an insult where he’s from.”
This adds humor, personality, and builds cultural tension or camaraderie.
3. Think About Code-Switching
When do your characters switch languages? It can signal:
Power: A queen who speaks the enemy’s tongue in negotiations to unsettle them.
Intimacy: Two lovers whispering in their mother tongue.
Alienation: A scholar stuck using broken trade-speech with villagers.
Defiance: A rebel refusing to speak the colonizer’s language.
Let language switching mean something.
4. Explore Attitudes Toward Language
What do people in your world believe about languages?
Is one language considered sacred?
Is another viewed as “dirty,” “low,” or “dangerous”?
Are certain dialects banned?
Is writing restricted to elites?
Is there an ancient, dead language used only in prophecy or magic?
Example:
In your desert empire, magic spells are written in a language only the dead can pronounce. Living mages simulate it with song, but it’s imperfect—hence, unstable magic.
Bonus Exercise: The Babel Scene
Write a scene where two characters must communicate without a shared language. Let them gesture, draw, struggle, misunderstand, and slowly begin to trust. You’ll find tension, comedy, and emotional payoff.
Language is never neutral. It’s memory, identity, and control. Use it like a sword—or a love letter.

Hot Writers Don't Gatekeep
the writers REALLY liked my artist resource post, so I thought i'd give y'all my dragon hoard of things i use for writing
Reverse Dictionary, you type in the meaning of a word, and it gives you a bunch of words that mean that. (MY MOST IMPORTANT OFFERING IN THIS LIST)
Slang Dictionary, what it says on the tin.
Anglish Translator, Anglish is if English evolved without borrowing from other languages and it really itches my brain
Incorrect Quotes Generator, Put character names in, and incorrect quotes come out. Really fun way to goof around with your characters' dynamics.
Handspeak, an ASL dictionary
Library of Babel, Odds are, the finished version of your wip is in here somewhere
The best fantasy map maker i have ever used
Glitch Text Generator is one I use A Lot, does ť̷̨̢͓̤͔̤̤̝̺̯̄̔̄̌̄͗͒͋͂͋͝ḩ̵̼̜͍͚͕̏̓͊̈̉̆̄͐́͗͒̈̃̊̚͜i̵̻̐̇̎̏̀̋̌̃̇̿͘̚s̴̮̔̂̇͒͑͝͝ͅ to your text
Totally not bootleg microsoft office
Emotions Thesaurus a guide for writing emotions and their associated body language
Mythcreants, has a whole bunch of stuff you can read to learn more about the technical aspects of writing
A decent article talking about what to think about when creating a language
Trope Talks, particularly good for beginner and younger writers or people who have a hard time reading. Honestly this whole channel is a fantastic format to get information into my adhd rattled brain.
FOR MY AO3 BESTIES! Postimages will host your image forever so you can embed it into your work
Ambient Chaos, sometimes the only thing in the world that can kick your brain into writing mode is nuclear sirens and lofi beats
Radioooooo, play a station from any place and year. Particularly helpful for period pieces.
Food timeline, when foods were invented

Common Questions:
Q: How do I interact with the story?
A: You can interact via the askbox! You can find it by clicking my pfp!
Q: Who is Core! Wally?
A: Core! Wally is the only neighbor of the Core au (outside of home), he keeps everything running smoothly in the Home between Homes.
Q: what is the home between homes?
A: The Home Between Home (HBH) is Core! Home, extended into a large spaceship-esc building, made just for Core! Wally and whoever he invites to stay. You could say that Home is the Core of that AU.

Favourite caves of qud mods? I wanna dive in and fully mod my game
I don't have the energy to turn these into hyperlinks so you have to do the work of typing these names into the workshop and finding them, I apologize that I am not apologizing.
Hearthpyre and the Clever Girl Fork are obvious necessities. Starapple Valley and Regrowing Plants and Qud Fishing is on that list too for being able to make your own imprint on the world. With how the uh, story's themes go, I am even more feeling validated in my decision to spend most of the game building bases and farming and stuff.
Dynamic Background Color because I don't even remember what the game looks like without it anymore. I think I use the More Dots mod too.
Allography lets you add descriptions to things, including yourself, which is great.
1 Percent Loot Drops adds a ton of neat, very balanced items.
Cleaning Robots lets you have robots that clean fluids and I honestly just wish one in on EVERY settlement so they don't become giant messes after one visit. Indispensable mod.
Choose Your Fighter is good if you aren't a lunatic like me who just makes your own phenotypes and sprites and pets and dialogue for every character you play.
Jademouth is what I would argue to be the best, most diegetically natural town mod in the game. It adds very little to the world outside of itself, and adds a very much needed mid-game town with a fun quest and good characters. None of the writing feels out of place, it doesn't add encounters all over the map, it keeps to its own lane and does an great job of it.
Cryptogeology is an incredibly good quest which helps guide you to each town in the game naturally, has a ton of flavor, and a really decent reward. It feels like a natural part of the game.
Tealeaves adds a much-needed merchant to the Six Day Stilt who is also very well written and lets you get a chance at Newly Sentient Beings rep.
Issachari Evolved adds much needed variety to that faction.
Nightmare Treats gives you a lot more ways to reroll mutations, AND ways to gain mental stats. Eat them. It's safe. Nothing bad will happen.
Wired Child is a fun mid-late stage quest in Ezra that gets you a VERY nice weapon if you can manage it.
Return of the Arcwyrk. You need more enemies in your life. zzzap.
Knife Fights at Eddy's is mandatory, I'm sorry I don't make the rules.
A Specter is Haunting Qud adds some VERY nasty enemies and you deserve to be killed by them. Things should be scarier. Get scared. Basically Templar Hologram Wraith Knights but they're Eater ghosts. Fucked up! I won't tell you how to beat them figure it out yourself.
Village Finder because I hate the "go to each parasang and press + and then -" when looking for villages. Am I that dumb my character can't notice villages when walking through them.
Folk Scrap and Mundanity. Mandatory. Very flavorful.
Baboons of Babel adds much needed variety to baboon faction.
Judicators of Qud add a fun neat challenging robot who is kind of like if a leering stalker and a feral lah had a baby that wasn't the sum of its parts but something all its own.
Disjecta Membra's lore feels a little out of sync with 1.0, and it makes the game a giant mess. So basically, enemies can be infected, and when they die things get Interesting. It can cause huge problems and it's a fucking mess. It can make Call to Arms an unworkable disaster and Templar historical sites become unmanageable. I love it. I cannot play without it. It makes the game so much more challenging and stressful, especially in the early/midgame. The writing is fucking incredible even if its flavor doesn't line up exactly right anymore. Do not do this on your first playthrough but after your first playthrough install this and suffer with me forever. This might be my favorite new-content mod tbh.
Your Own Personal Relics is a neat adjustment to the Item Naming system which honestly I just wish-name things when I mod them to max anyway but it's neat.
Feline's Furnishings are good tiles.
Fluid Storage is great and the Klein Bottles are fantastic and putting 500 drams in their weightless moebius will never go wrong for you ever.
I think that should do you with the unimax's share of the mods I use!
Sidenote, Eule does a lot of mods that are Very Cool but also last time I used them they had a problem of all of them would spawn things in the jungle, so with all of them active every jungle screen would have like, their populations taken over by all the Argent Somethingorother and the Unseen Adversaries and the Arboreta Guys. None of them work with 1.0 anyway I don't think, and the mods ARE very high quality! But their spawn rates were extremely overpowering to the point where the jungle was basically just entirely made of those 3 factions and it was a Bit Much.
I'm also about to try out the Labyrinthine Trail and Xeototin Mechanical Somethingorother for the first time but I haven't done them yet so i have no comment.
Also Facial Equipment Diversity is neat too.

Arknights successfully pulling off a football game mode using a tower defence engine has got me thinking again about how important choosing a versatile gameplay format can be for a live-service game.
All within the same tower defence engine, we've had:
Football mode
Roguelike mode
Exploration & resource farming (taken to a new level in Mineshaft Crawl)
Payload pushing
Control points / King of the Hill in various forms
Escort missions in various forms
Capture the flag
and various other different ways of engaging that don't have a pithy name to list, such as the Babel chains mechanic or the nethersea brand / steam cloud map control. All of it still using the same core gameplay of a 2D grid of terrain that you deploy stuff onto that then sits there acting automatically in real time, with a retreat button and a single skill button for further interaction.
Also there's slug racing.
For sure, you need skill and creativity to reinterpret your system to come up with these ideas, but you can't do that if the system is too shallow to support them in the first place. And if you can get that diversity, it stops the experience getting stale even after X years. (Plus, I'm guessing it's a lot more fun to work on.)
#Arknights#Long-running mobile games that did not set themselves up like this and suffer for it shall go unnamed

i recently saw someone on this website describe rf kuang as a writer that doesn’t trust her readers because she doesn’t explain everything in her books in enough detail… rf kuang who included timed flashbacks / intricate dialogue and maps in the poppy war…. rf kuang who provided footnotes for most if not all translations or historical references in babel… like i think we need to talk about the real issue here and that has nothing to do with authors not “trusting” readers but new wave readers being too focused on consuming rather than reading and making inferences
#regardless of opinions on rf kuang let’s not act like her breadth of knowledge is not translated or included in her novels to aid her story#like it’s not her fault if you haven’t ready moby dick or gullivers travels like google is free and libraries exist#do some research that’s what reading is for!!! reading something and becoming curious about its content!!!#rf kuang#katabasis
