y'know... for a setting that places so much importance in Language and does so many ice cool things playing with it (Correspondence/Discordance, Parabola & Irem, etc) i think there's a bit of a missed opportunity when it comes to the terms and words people use in their day to day life... like for example:
do you think radical revolutionaries would avoid words like "enlightening" in their vocabulary and flip them for LON-appropriate counterparts to signal their beliefs?
like substituting the word "light" with "blight". lol
similarly, pet names relating to light like "sunshine" kinda have a whole extra flavour tied to them, leaning into nostalgia, melancholy and/or danger depending on the people using it. irony, even
"honey" as a pet name also has extra connotations now and might actually bother some people instead due to the association with the drug...
do you think SMEN, taboo as it is, and seeking being a recognizable phenomenon even to the common londoner, would spawn swear words and insults? (imagine the weight of telling someone to Go Seek or Fall Down a Well)
the word "well" itself. well as an adverb, interjection, adjective. just. think about it. think about what it represents. idk something is happening to this word for sure

(That's not her Mama, it's her babysitter.)
Video description and transcript under the cut.
A conversation between a nine-month-old baby in a pink onesie and a skinny short-haired Black girl lying on her front on bed. The babysitter speaks earnestly to the baby in a thick Scouse accent. Baby babbles back in a perfect call-and-response, somehow with a hilarious syrupy Scouse intonation even without intelligible words.
Baby, wide awake and chatty: "Gah"
Babysitter: "Don't you want to go to sleep?"
Baby: "Nuh"
Babysitter: "Okay. Why don't you ever want to go to sleep?"
Baby: "Awu ke deeaey"
Babysitter: "You got energy?"
Baby: *turns and gestures behind them* "Lookasubababu"
Babysitter: *points over her shoulder* "I got your bottle, I got your teddy and then you started to—(unintelligible)"
Baby: "Ibuddku"
Babysitter: "I changed your bum"
Baby: "A dju ku jdooob!"
Babysitter: "I thought that's what you wanted to do."
Baby: "Awu ku shoo shi kwawu."
Babysitter: *matching the sing-song cadence* "Yeah but we've had a nice day together, and then you're taking a nap now."
Baby: "Awula ku sholey!"
Babysitter: "But why?"
Baby: "Awlu ku waai?"
Babysitter: "Yeah?"
Baby: "Aiw tuh paayi!"
Babysitter: *shaking her head playfully* "Yeah but you need to go to sleep 'cuz you're a baby."
Baby: "A'll ku shwaab ka daarkh!"
Babysitter: "Yeah, but you're a baby so you're meant to listen to what I'm sayin'."
Baby: "I'll ku showley!"
Babysitter: "Yeah but you're meant to be going to sleep because you're the baby."
Baby: "Au ku shooshe daaagh!"
Babysitter: *cracks up and faceplants on the bed*
Baby: *looking in confusion* "Awz we—" *then smiles widely at grown-up's laughter*

it always struck me how STUPID david cain is. he trained cassandra like a dog but cassandra is? a human being? with higher mental processing??
what do you mean you allowed her to develop a personal language through which you had no access to, and vice versa forbade her access to your language, thereby allowing her to form her personal understanding of the world - including, oh I dont know, beliefs? morals? a sense of right and wrong??
without having a way to impress more complex concepts (and body language is great - you cannot teach philosophy and complex ethics through pantomime), cass was free and able to look at the world through her perspective that could not be colored by her father's beliefs because she could only see the heart of him - not the bigger picture, modus operandi, reader's choice
cain's nurture exacerbated cass's base nature. like duh. like my guy. srs?
cain trained cass like she wouldnt be able to see the world and make her own opinions of it - as if depriving her of language meant lobotomizing her - is he stupid? thats not the same thing! clearly she can do pattern recognition! clearly she could make independent decisions!
it was a recipe to make someone who would be unable to "drink the koolaid" because she couldnt recognize the koolaid is for drinking!!
it definitely allowed cass to effectively cut through the bullshit.
if you wanted to stifle someone's nature, you fill their head with advanced ideas, and remove their ability to discern a lie. so like whatever they did to damian.

where do you think “griddle” as a nickname came from?
I have thought about this! I think it initially came from Harrow being two years old and not quite having gotten the hang of enunciation or compound vowels.
It stuck around mostly because Gideon hated it—that's not her name!!—and even as toddlers, Harrow's favorite game was getting under her skin.

#snake#snakes#pets#hognoses#hognose#sakura#sakura kurīmu#this was shortly after she joined our family and was still in her baby bin#she wanted a friend so bad she befriended the camera#this poor poor lonely noodle#it was not long after she and scoria were allowed to meet and then refused to be separated#they go in their own little sleeping hides at night#but they both get very upset if the other is away for long#they'll watch me holding the other#and sakura has a conniption if I take her sister out of the room to play in another area#they absolutely need each other#The way she initially attempted to bond with the camera reminded me of Harry Harlow's monkey experiment with surrogate monkeys#it is INCREDIBLY sad that these animals desperately wanted love and affection SO BADLY they turned to the closest they could find#which were inanimate objects that couldn't really love them back but it was better than nothing#that can't have been good for their psychological development for so so many reasons#but now that Sakura has the love and support of her sibling Scoria I don't ever intend to separate them so long as adult hormonal changes#don't suddenly make them go to sweet with each other to aggressive#again I think the agression or at least eating of smaller males comes from psychological issues not the species seeking out and eating them#like king snakes intentionally do#at least with girls I do not have experience with boys#but maybe someone with a strong understanding of snakes and their psychology and body language might pick up where I cannot examine such#once again my tags are longer than the post itself lol

the way Arthur baby talks animals is so important to me. I was gonna do a compilation of this but it’s tough bc so much of it is in the VAing. but he’ll just suddenly be like (the softest voice you’ve ever heard) oh hi there friend! hello! I’m Arthur and the invisible voice in my head is John ^.^ don’t be afraid, we’re friends! is this your home? do you live here? do you want to follow us? like he’s trying to have a whole damn conversation and you’re like. this man has killed multiple people with his bare hands but never let it be said that he let any of that shit deprive him of his whimsy

Hey, so right about the time I've been posting about sign languages, and ...
... a day after I answered that poll about whether babies are cute, this video popped up in my YouTube subscription feed:
youtube
Eye contact. Proper Closed Captions in English. ~10 minutes.
Summary: Professional linguist and parent of a toddler, explains what Baby Sign is, how it differs from ASL (and other natural sign languages), and discusses his family's experience with using Baby Sign with his own daughter.

Baby Linguistic Inventory Post #1 - 2024-07-01
Today in "things that only I care about but I have nowhere else to post them"- My sister had a baby last June! As she and her husband currently live with us, I get to see the baby everyday, and as a former linguistics major, I have been endlessly fascinated with monitoring his linguistic development. Today, having heard him spontaneously repeat the word "smoothie" (pronounced "moo-ee") with clearly intentional meaning, I've decided to start keeping an inventory of the words that he picks up.
To my recollection, the "using words with meaning" started roughly around February or March of this year, with a larger leap in late April/early May, so he's moving along at a good clip! He's up to roughly 20 words as of this writing, by our measure.
The current word inventory, as of 7/1:
mama
dada [dada, or the outdoors as a whole; his dad is outside most of the day]
berry - beh-wee [berries, or flowers, or anything resembling a berry] [+hand sign]
blue - bwoo [+hand sign]
honorable mention: blueberry - bwoo-wee [his favorite food; he will try to combine the signs]
banana - na-na
more - moh-ah [food]
food/eat - [hand sign only]
booby - boo-bee [milk/nursing] [+hand sign]
potty - [hand signal only]
yay - ehyee [+clapping]
kitty - dee-dee [may mean cat, or it might just be the way you greet a cat]
momo [all cats; one of the cats is named Momo so he has generalized this as the easiest form of address]
puppy [baba?]
dog - da-da
night night - neh-neh [+wave]
bye bye - buh-bah [+wave/also means hello maybe]
baby - buh-bee [unclear if himself or just a sound]
ab'n/bab'n/gab'm [who knows, he just says it a lot and it seems to mean something to him 😂]
please - ba [+hand sign]
light?/fan? - beh [indeterminate ceiling fixture; usually while pointing at it]
smoothie - moo-ee [new 7/1]
Anyway, nothing pithy to say about all that! I just think it's neat 🎉

We are absolutely thrilled and delighted when our son, who has a speech/language delay, speaks a sentence. While this may seem commonplace to others, it brings us joy.
