Hypothetical Paranoid Fringe Timeline
The Shadow Behind the Curtain Disclaimer: The following is a work of speculative satire, drawing only from the outer edges of the internet, whispered threads on image boards, grainy documentaries that never aired, and that guy with a whiteboard in a bunker. It is not factual… or is it? The Hidden Pattern: Lord Protectors of the Global Reset Some believe that what we’re witnessing isn’t just…

Wiston castle (Castell Gwys) is an old estate in Haverfordwest, Wales. As with many old fortresses in the region, there is a local folktale associated with it:
As the story goes, ownership of the castle was at one time disputed between several claimants. The situation was further complicated by the presence of a horrible monster: a basilisk had made its lair on the bank of a nearby river. Though the creature was only about 2 feet (60 cm) long, it was exceptionally deadly, being able to kill people merely by looking at them. Any would-be heroes who tried to sneak up on the basilisk from behind were swiftly disposed of as well, as the monster had a separate set of eyes on the back of its head. It was a black and yellow reptile, and those who managed to avoid its 360° death vision would succumb to its deadly noxious breath. But it had a weakness: if the basilisk was seen by a living human, without being able to see that human, it would drop dead on the spot.
And so the locals agreed that if anyone managed to look at the monster without being seen by it, deserved to inherit the Wiston estate. Several adventurers attempted to do so, emboldened by the promise of wealth and titles, but all of their quests ended in deadly failure.
As is often the case with legends about quests and monsters, the hero of the story – curiously, I could not find his name – succeeded through wit and trickery rather than force. He rolled a wooden barrel up a nearby hill and climbed aside. The barrel rolled down the hill past the basilisk’s lair and he cautiously looked through the bunghole (the tiny round gap in the side of a barrel) as he rolled by. He yelled at the monster and mocked it, but the creature could not see him. ‘Ha, bold basilisk!’ he shouted, ‘I can see you, though you can’t see me!’
And so the basilisk fell to the ground. Having fulfilled the requirements of the quest, the hero became the rightful owner of the Wiston castle.

Basilisks are a rather well-known type of monster, usually being portrayed as a dragon-like creature or a monstrous rooster in modern times. I will not detail the entire history of basilisks here, but one account by the ancient Roman author Plinius Maior describes the basilisk as a frighteningly noxious snake: these monsters are supposedly so dangerous that the very grass on which they move will burn away from their presence. Its vile breath destroys shrubs and its gaze is lethal (this last trait is commonly attributed to basilisks throughout time, like in the Welsh story we just went over). Plinius claimed that these serpents are about twelve fingers long and can be distinguished by the crown-like white spot on the forehead.
Finally, according to Plinius, there is an older belief that the venom of a basilisk is so horrifyingly potent that if a rider on horseback kills one of these monsters with a spear, the venom would somehow flow up the shaft of the spear and kill both the rider and his horse.
Additionally, it is said that these beasts hatch from the egg of a rooster. Such an egg doesn’t have a normal eggshell, but instead is covered in thick skin. It is round and has a muddy colour, unlike a normal egg, and is supposedly laid when a rooster reaches a certain (old) age, and then can only be laid in summer. Even then, the egg has to be sat upon by a rooster, and it is supposedly very difficult to keep the rooster away from its egg.
Edward Topsell, in his 1658 ‘history of four-footed beasts and serpents’ proposes a possible origin for this story: a rooster living in unsanitary conditions might vomit a compact cluster of undigested food, which might appear as a weird egg to a superstitious farmer. It is possible that such clusters sometimes included a parasitic worm, which appears to ‘hatch’ from the ‘egg’ when the worm starts to move. It is not impossible that such a story was exaggerated through many retellings, until the worm became a snake.

There's a lot of foolishness happening in today's entries... Starting right from the very beginning. Why were they planning on going over at 4am? Because that was the plan, Renfield only delayed them. They literally just talked about how much weaker Dracula is during the day. Either they're banking on him being gone hunting because they're afraid of him being there and basilisk glaring them (a la shovel day) if they go during the day, or... I don't know. It's not like even if he's gone he wouldn't know they had been by, because they're going to leave plenty of footprints in the dust. I don't understand the reasoning.

LAMENT OF OUROBOROS MASTERLIST

Tumblr media
It didn’t matter, not when the light had faded from the ink on your body and blood bubbled from your dry mouth. Dimly, you registered your metal pail floating on its side just near the blond; and your eyes could only flick feebly upwards to meet his own, widened ones. Your heart pulsed, sticky and metallic on your tongue: and it clouded the words forming on your tongue weakly.
“To… umiro.” The syllables coalesced into a clumsy string in honey tongue; a futile attempt to be reassuring, when your clothes were stained with blood and charred marks and your fists still palpitated with small pulses of electrons. ‘It’s dead’. You staggered, pressing your fingers into the tree you hid behind only minutes prior to this—digging your nails harshly into the bark while you fought to stay upright.
The profile was right—transferring energy into another form was far more efficient than turning it into a material object. But that didn’t do any good when you could feel the unfamiliar energy; you were due to collapse any time soon from the fatigue that had built up—ignoring the energy sacrificed.
Still, you thought drowsily as you fumbled the thin, cold handle of your pail (the clay, miraculously, had stayed half in the bucket), the combat experiment had been extraordinarily useful to gauge how far you could push yourself in a fight. Casually, you wrung out your shirt and the rolled-up bottoms of your trousers, before you glanced at the massive snake one last time. Just like a minute ago, it was still dead.
Whatever. It no longer concerned you; as someone who dropped Lament of Ouroboros an hour into playing, you had no concept of the value of the beast, nor how rare it was. Objectively, it was a fat snake. Perhaps you could take its massive skin for yourself, or find a market for basilisk meat, or even carve its massive teeth into more suitable weapons than the damn stick you’d found to walk with.
Like a cracked pomegranate, the lightning had pierced through its body and spilled its innards onto the banks, while a fang lay chipped nearby.
“Wait!” Ah. In all honesty, you’d forgotten about the blond man who now scrambled to his feet with a stricken, almost-panicked look in his eyes. While he was in the throes of adrenaline, his pinprick pupils had allowed you to observe briefly the vibrant turquoise and magenta rings in his eyes—blue spreading into the purple in a shade you’d never quite seen so bright. Though now, they had dilated back to a healthy size; similarly, his irises were almost completely purple as he held your wrist in a slight daze. You frowned.
“Yes?” A headache began to form.
In the end, you took the stranger home.
“Sorry,” he’d murmured with his teeth worrying at his lips, a habit you used to have back on Earth. Maybe that was what had made a shred of pity dampen your wizened old heart, or maybe it was the countless wounds that needed treating as soon as possible. You didn’t know what he was doing all the way in the deep of the Borderlands (you also didn’t particularly care), but it was particularly commendable to stay alive so long when he looked like he sucked at fighting. Perhaps he just had some insane luck, some you could’ve used a life ago.
Though, you thought while flexing your fingers, this life had certainly made up for its shortcomings, present just a few months ago.
His name was Aventurine, he’d told you, eyes searching your face as if you were meant to react. Great, you’d replied, but you hadn’t given him your own in return as you half-carried, half-propped him up: his arm flung over and secured firmly in place by your hand over your shoulders, while your other hand gingerly clasped his side with a metal pail bumping against him. You win some, you lose some, you’d sagely surmised. Judging by the ornate clothing, which still wasn’t given as a convenient window of your system (seriously, you had to do some serious guesswork with that massive snake!), it was evident that he could be someone important—though you lacked both the knowledge and the shits to give to treat him with whatever courtesy he ought to have been owed.
No, his name was actually Kakavasha, he’d amended hastily as he sat down in your bathroom. Maybe it was simply the brief security he felt when, upon seeing the long stairs in your house (and his face becoming a tad more palloured at the sight), you’d gently picked up his too-light body and merely climbed the rest of the way to the large bathroom that gazed out onto the forest and distant horizon. You said nothing. Neither did he, but when you held down his shoulders to wrangle him onto the wooden stool that clattered against cerulean tiles as you dragged it over to the cabinet where you kept medical supplies, he'd decided to break his silence. Alchemy, to your annoyance, could not directly be used to heal—at least not yet, when the finer points of anatomy eluded you.
Cool, you replied once more, in that same impassive tone. For someone you were going to send away in a few business hours, he sure was chatty. Peeling off the long, dark coat that had been stuck to his body by blood, and the subsequent quality shirt (that was damn near unrecognisable with how much it had been torn and bloodied), you missed the faint pink on his face whilst you surveyed him clinically.
A long gash from left pectoral to right clavicle. Bruising around the rib area. Lacerations on his lower abdomen. Bruising on his lower back, as well as many smaller wounds on his upper. Grazing on his arms with a more serious abrasion on his left bicep.
“...No broken bones, right?” It was the first sound from you that hadn’t been monosyllabic. Really, almost dying together made you practically amicable. Buddies, even. These paltry words were the most you’d spoken to anyone in weeks.
“No.” He was quiet as you pressed a ball of gauze soaked in cold spirits against the shallow wounds with nary a hiss. “...Thank you for saving my life.”
“Don’t sweat it. It was going to eat me too,” you returned. Gratitude that wasn’t mere platitudes came rarely. Gratitude was what you should’ve gotten by shouldering your runaway mother’s debts, but that never happened.
His sincere, earnest gaze prickled your skin with discomfort; too used to perfunctory nods and smiles.
“It was the most terrifying sight I’ve seen.” And for a brief moment, you didn’t know who he referred to—that basilisk, or the you so carefully wrapping his arms up with bandages. Your scent was that of blood and saltwater, tearing into his senses with an acuity that only reminded him of how easily you felled that beast.
He didn’t elaborate.
You didn’t ask further.

Whilst I agree that pure evil people don’t exist, that is irrelevant when talking about rich powerful people who do harm on a regular basis. I think these points about radicalisation are important when it comes to TERF thinking points absolutely. I do however also think they are being applied to precisely the wrong person.
There’s one key point that’s being missed here, and that JKR is the person in a position of power. She’s extremely wealthy. She literally got the now most powerful party in Britain to adopt TERF talking points. That’s not a conspiracy theory either, Kier Starmer the now prime minister literally started parroting her points a whole day after meeting with her, one day before the election, and there’s a lot of speculation that if he hadn’t done that they’d have had a bigger turnout in the left side of the party. That was the only way she’d support Labour since for years she went to the Tories because “Labour didn’t know what a woman was.” She is one of the richest people in the country, she is extremely powerful.
She isn’t the radicalised, she’s the radicaliser. And she’s not just transphobic, her classism, racism, fatphobia, ableism, and misogyny have always been present in the Harry Potter books. I used to have a childhood special interest in Harry Potter so thankfully my knowledge is still very much here:
1. In Order of the Phoenix Professor Umbridge is gang raped by Centaurs and her PTSD is mocked
2. The main female character’s main personality traits are she *checks notes* nags them and does all their homework
3. The goblins are greedy and run the bank, and Severus Snape has extremely Jewish caricature features
4. Severus Snape is seen as sympathetic at the end of Deathly Hallows, despite the fact he supported a genocide and bullied innocent teenagers since day one
5. Dudley’s mocked for being fat regularly, regularly
6. The Weasleys are poor, have too many kids, and are all red haired. It’s a lazy Irish Catholic stereotype, their name is literally Weasel
7. Accent classism is a huge huge huge problem in the U.K. to the point where until recent years your accent could result in you legally not being given a job because it’s an indicator of class. Hagrid’s regional accent is mocked regularly, anyone with a regional accent is mocked regularly
8. The Irish character’s personality trait is *checks notes* he blows things up and sets them on fire
9. The entire concept of squibs (who are an embarrassment and can’t be allowed in society) is the only real indicator of disabled people within the HP universe
10. There is a black character named KINGSLEY SHACKLEBOLT. Shacklebolt means: “a bolt which passes through the eyes of a shackle”. Or, what they used to shackle slaves together
11. There are many sympathetic male villains, there are much fewer sympathetic female villains - Professor Umbridge, Aunt Marge, Bellatrix Lestrange, Pansy Parkinson, and more - they are all cruel and evil people. They are never allowed to grow unlike Draco Malfoy, Severus Snape, etc
12. There is an entire species who is enslaved and they like being enslaved. The only person who sees a problem with this is Hermione Granger who is mocked for wanting to free them and it’s a comical point. I mean, Dumbledore hires Dobby and pays him wages but he still…… has a mass of slaves from day one
13. So we have Hufflepuff, a house which is very treat them all the same etc, but there are jokes of how stupid they supposedly are since day one. From the beginning we are separating children into: clever, brave, evil, and miscellaneous (miss me with Slytherin aren’t evil, they literally were until Deathly Hallows, they supported the Basilisk in Chamber of Secrets ffs)
There’s loads more but I can’t be bothered to keep going quite frankly.
And the thing is this isn’t just “it’s aged badly” because her Striker books do the exact same thing. There’s classist stereotypes, there’s xenophobia, and now there’s transphobia. In fact transphobia before she became full mega-TERF, she’s not grown or learned or been corrupted. She’s always been like this. And whilst she wasn’t always open about it, the clues have been there. The clues have always been there.
She hasn’t always been this extreme, but I remember when the rumours first started. She claimed she was having “senior moments” when she liked TERF talking points, she was just “clueless” when she made men in dress jokes, she was showing signs for many years and she was given grace and people explained the problem. She was given way way way too many chances before she went full TERF.
People keep searching for ways to argue that JK Rowling has always been a horrible person deep down as a way of explaining her recent behaviour.
But here’s the thing: that’s probably not true at all.
Pretending it is discounts the harsher, scarier truth: that even decent, well-meaning people can be radicalised by dangerous, hateful, predatory groups, and given enough time they can become truly hideous versions of their former selves.
It can happen to me. It can happen to you. It can happen to any of us, given the right mix of circumstances. And over the past few years, we’ve seen it happen to one of the most famous children’s authors of our age.
Nobody is immune.

Chapter 7 - Die, or Be Clever
Adjacent to the glacial chill of Server Room A, within the relative, sterile warmth of the primary control center, Dr. Aris Thorne and Dr. Lena Hanson stood before the main console. Banks of servers hummed behind reinforced glass, their indicator lights blinking in complex, silent conversations, processing the final diagnostic checks for the Basilisk Mainframe – the dedicated neural network scaffold. The air in the control room was thick with the smell of ozone and the low, constant thrum of its own life support, a sound that seemed to amplify the silence between the two scientists.
"Sequence initiated. Final energy capacitor charge at ninety-eight percent," Thorne announced, his fingers moving across the cool, haptic interface. He avoided looking at the primary schematic display too long—the one showing twenty-four biolink connection points radiating like a grotesque spiderweb. His voice was professionally clipped. Just another system check.
Hanson, however, was tracing one of those lines on her own smaller monitor with a weary finger. "The latency simulations hold up, Aris, but they are just that—simulations." Her voice was low, edged with a familiar tension Thorne tried to ignore. "Linking twenty-four human minds directly… no buffer, no mediating architecture… It’s like trying to weave a tapestry from raw nerves. The pain alone could cascade, overwhelm them before anything even begins."
Thorne nodded grimly, eyes fixed on a cascading diagnostic report. He tapped a command, rerouting a minor power fluctuation. "That's why Director Von’Arx is funding this, Lena. To chart it. 'Cognitive synergy through direct neural linkage,' the brief states. He believes this is the next leap." He allowed himself a quick glance at her. "He's pushed boundaries before. The Raven TVI itself was pure theory five years ago."
"This isn't just pushing boundaries, Aris, it's vaporizing them," Hanson countered, turning to face him, her expression stark. "And doing it with children whose psychological profiles were flagged because they're outliers. The ethics board sign-off felt… architected. Rushed by Von’Arx's sheer will, or perhaps by his echo's now."
"Our job is the technical execution, Lena," Thorne said, his tone hardening, a familiar retreat into the quantifiable. He adjusted a calibration setting on the main console, his movements precise, almost too controlled. "The Director, or what speaks for him, sets the parameters. He's aware of the risks."
"Is he?" Hanson persisted, stepping closer, her voice dropping. "Truly? Or is he just blinded by the promise of a legacy, a digital afterlife? What happens inside that network if one of those minds fractures? The raw psychic trauma… what does that do to the others, hardwired together? The containment protocols are purely conceptual, Aris. Lines of code we hope will work."
Thorne finally turned from the console, a flicker of something – weariness? doubt? – in his eyes before his professional mask resettled. He ran a hand over the smooth, cool surface of the command module. "Look, I don't pretend to understand Von’Arx's ultimate endgame here, especially not anymore. The secrecy, the speed… the directives feel… different now. Less human. But the technical challenge," his gaze drifted back to the main screen, to the elegant, terrifying symmetry of the Mainframe schematic, "is immense. And the potential data…" He let the thought hang, the scientist in him momentarily captivated before he visibly shook it off. "Whatever happens in there," he said, his voice regaining its clipped efficiency, "it won't be forgiving. The pressure to adapt will be absolute. Failure isn't just logging off." He hesitated, then met her eyes. "It's a closed system. Finite cognitive resources. Raw mental contact. The ones who make it will be the ones who learn the rules, the unwritten ones, faster. The ones who are… clever." He looked towards the final activation switch, a heavy, shielded toggle. Its amber standby light pulsed slowly, steadily. On a secondary monitor nearby, a bank of low-resolution video feeds flickered, showing the silent, ghostly rows of containment units in Server Room A, their blue diagnostic lights casting an eerie pallor on the still forms within. "The alternative?" He offered a small, almost imperceptible shrug. "Cognitive collapse. Psychic disintegration. We simply don't know. It's adapt… or be erased." Die, or be clever. The unwritten charter.
Thorne reached for the large, shielded activation switch. A heavy thunk echoed as the safety cover retracted. His hand rested on the switch itself, fingers splayed. He stared at the main display, at the intricate dance of light representing the charged and waiting Mainframe. Seconds stretched. The only sound was the hum of the servers, the faint click of the unseen clock from Server Room A. His expression was unreadable, lost in the data streams. Hanson watched him. Her own breath was tight in her chest. Then, she took a small step forward and her hand lightly, almost imperceptibly, brushed his arm. A tiny, human contact in the sterile cold. Thorne blinked. Snapped back. His gaze cleared, hardened. "The system is stable," he stated, voice flat, devoid of its earlier hesitation. "Parameters met. Time to initialize."
With a decisive, fluid motion, he threw the switch. The amber standby light on the console blinked green, then went solid. A low, resonant thrum vibrated through the floor, a sound felt more than heard, as power surged through the Basilisk Mainframe. On the monitors, energy conduits lit up like a galaxy igniting, converging into a single, blinding point before branching out again, sending tight, needle-threaded signals down lines braided straight into twenty-four sleeping spines. Not a jolt, but an intricate key. Unlocking their minds from chemically induced slumber. Not into the cold reality of the containment units, but into the empty, waiting, utterly unknown space of the Basilisk network.
Physically, they remained comatose. Perfectly preserved. But somewhere deeper—between signal and sensation, between pattern and person—something opened its eyes. And it did not blink.

Mythos: If They Were Real
The Basilisk: King of Scales and Deception
Prologue – Beyond Those Eyes Southern China. The wetlands lie low, where water ferns twist between decayed bamboo. A young field biologist crouched in the mud, flipping through a document long dismissed by academia as an “exaggerated folk account.” The manuscript read: "The cockscomb snake—never meet its eyes. Death is immediate. Its egg lies beside the toad. Upon hatching, it is already venomous." He frowned, slipped the yellowed paper into his field journal, and glanced down at a patch of rotting mud and a clump of toad eggs. In that moment, he felt it—eyes watching coldly from behind the reeds.
Chapter One – A Western King, an Eastern Misconception From Europe’s Basilisk to Africa’s crowing crested cobra, cultures apart have described strikingly similar creatures: Serpentine bodies, a rooster-like crest, and an uncanny association with toads. Legends claim they wield a lethal gaze, exhale venomous breath, and that nothing grows where they die. In medieval German illustrations, the Basilisk bears avian traits.
Tumblr media
In Chinese rural lore, the cockscomb snake appears in warnings like “if a serpent is seen in the paddy, misfortune will follow.” Both describe it as: a snake hatched from an egg laid beside a toad. But science has never truly addressed the core questions: Why are these serpents always paired with toads? And why does our memory of them always come tinged with unease?
Chapter Two – Mirror Eyes and the Crown of Bone Dr. Nora Halberg, armed with infrared scanners, toxin sensors, and a recorder, entered a Yunnan wetland locals call “Ghost Pond.” Villagers described a snake: “It has a red crest like a chicken, glowing eyes, and makes a screeching noise.” She captured an infrared image— A raised serpent, its head crowned with a distinct protrusion, its eyes glowing unnaturally bright. Dissection revealed: – A reflective layer beneath the eye scales, like that of owls, enhancing night vision and potentially causing pain through sudden flashes of light. – A keratinous crest atop the skull, structurally akin to the display ornaments of theropod dinosaurs—not decorative, but a signaling and threat mechanism. This was ecological theater: a performance of light and form. Evolution had designed it not to attack, but to intimidate into retreat.
Chapter Three – The Misplaced Mother: The Toad Nora’s most startling discovery came beside a muddy bank. Near a cluster of toad eggs, she found a clutch of snake eggs. Analysis revealed: – Residue of toad mucus proteins on the eggshells, with adhesive and preservative properties. – The coloration of the snake eggs nearly matched the toad eggs, making them indistinguishable in the cluster. This was the heart of a thousand-year misunderstanding. These serpents deliberately laid eggs in toad habitats, camouflaging them among amphibian clutches. Observers mistook the snake hatchlings as emerging from toads. Worse yet, the newly hatched serpents immediately preyed on the toads—absorbing their toxins, mimicking the terrestrial version of a poison dart frog. This was no symbiosis—it was ecological deceit and predation.
Chapter Four – Death by Sight, or Defensive Reflex? Nora once witnessed the creature’s full defensive display: – It raised its head. – Its crest flared. – Its tongue flickered rapidly. – The air shimmered with a faint chemical mist. This mist irritated eyes and nasal membranes, inducing pain, temporary blindness, and—especially in enclosed areas—paralysis. Here lay the root of the “death by gaze” myth: It wasn’t the serpent’s look that killed—it was the venom cloud, misread as a deadly stare. Nearby, Nora discovered patches of dead grass and small animal corpses, all showing traces of venom. Indeed, large releases could damage local ecosystems, fueling the claim that “nothing grows where it dies.” The truth had always followed—just obscured by fear mistaken for myth.
Chapter Five – King of Scales, Beyond Language A creature this venomous, this bizarre in appearance and behavior— It is little wonder the West dubbed it Basilisk (“Little King”), and the Africa gave it hybrid names like “crowing crested cobra”. In her field notes, Nora wrote: “This is no ordinary serpent. It is a joint invention of evolution and culture— a long-lived deception built from camouflage, biochemistry, and linguistic error.” It never needed magic. It never needed to strike. It simply lived, parasitically, within humanity’s fear of misnaming and of the ‘Other.’
Epilogue – The Snake in the Mirror, Whose Name Is Misunderstanding At the program’s close, Nora stood at the edge of the wetland, darkness all around, holding a single snake egg coated in mucus, faintly glowing. She gently placed it back into the mud. “If any creature ever survived by exploiting human misunderstanding of language—it would be this one.” The camera pulled back. Her reflection shimmered on the water’s surface. And from the reeds, a pair of narrow pupils watched in silence. No roar. No magic. Just presence. Already a part of human memory—long before myth had a name for it.

Egypt is a very big region and is located towards the south and is divided in two parts. One part is Upper Egypt and the other part is Lower Egypt. And it is of the latter that I wish to tell you of. In Lower Egypt dwell and and live two perilous monsters which live by choice on the banks of the sea, which are greatly feared and dreaded by the inhabitants of the country, of which some are called hippotaures and the others cocodrilles. But in Upper Egypt, which is towards the Orient, dwell many wild and venomous beasts, like lions, leopards, parids, trigids and basilisks, dragons, serpents, and asps, which are full of very perilous and deadly venom. In the land of Egypt our master Solinus recounts and tells that along the banks of the Tigris, also known by others as the Nile, there is often found a marvelous beast known in the local language of Egypt as catoblepas, which is very small in size and very weak in the strength of its body. And its limbs are very small and frail, and its gait is ponderous and lazy. And its head is so big and so heavy that it cannot lift it very high. And the authorities say that this beast surmounts all other beasts in venom and that its gaze kills upon sight faster than the gaze of the basilisk, for any eye that sees it is irremediably in peril of death, and that is why God and nature have provided a remedy, for if that beast were light, strong, and skillful and if it had its head raised, no creature before it would remain alive. Also in Egypt are a kind of bird known as ibices and they are similar to storks and live only on small snakes that they eat, but we will be quiet now and talk about them later in the chapter on birds.
Translation mine. "Dwell" is "repairent", from "repaire" meaning "den", so "where they make their den", but that felt clunky.

After centuries filled with fear, hunger and darkness, mythical creatures left their dark forests and misty swamps to quietly seep into human cities of glass and concrete.
They had no other choice. The world has changed and the shrinking wildernesses could no longer support them.
At first they were full of despair, anger and distrust, however they quickly adapted to this new environment.
Nymphs and rusalkas settled in cozy parks and gardens, filled with fountains, aged trees and tranquility. Now they no longer dance amongst forest turfs and meadows, but on the surfaces of park ponds, on the green lawns and in the midst of old statues covered in ivy.
Godlings, house serpents, domoviks and other spirits of home and household hearth, silently moved into the cozy spaces behind radiators and boilers.
At night, city lanterns attract not only bats and moths, but also phantoms and mothfolk, scaring lone passersby.
Richer citizens started proudly walking their pygmy house centaurs with bodies of ponies.
Thunderbirds and electric species of Phoenix and rarog build their nests in power plants.
More and more people open dragon cafĂŠs. You are required to put on fireproof glowes in order to enter.
Other reptile enthusiasts started to keep pampered hydras, dwarf basilisks and Indonesian drakes in aviaries and glass terrariums.
Many Swiss banks now hire leprechauns.
Pug-like, salivating breeds of cerberus are perceived as nothing more than adorable, with the fearsome reputation of their ancestors nothing but a distant memory.

The Glacial Basilisk
Tumblr media
Fun Fact! - There can never be enough lakes and rivers for every basilisk in a habitat. In times of desperation, often after being chased away from a lake by a rival, a glacial basilisk will resort to hunting and ambushing from snow banks. These basilisks, no longer surrounded by frigid water, may use their fins for a third purpose; venting heat. This allows the ‘ice’ plates on its back to stay cool and equalizes the serpent’s body temperature.
While many variants of other creatures in this frozen environment have managed to find thrive among their more typical counterparts, there is one variant that has a notable disadvantage. Blue basilisks are able to blend into the surface of the lakes they inhabit, darker basilisks tend toward the depths, but there are basilisks that share the vibrancy of the blue-scaled variants without the color to match. These vibrant basilisks, most often colored purple, stand out too starkly against the ice to hunt as efficiently. To make matters worse, these basilisks are smaller on average than others of the species, and so they are almost exclusively driven out of lakes and into snow banks. Sometimes, even the ice-mimicking plates on its back can be miscolored, making snow banks their best bet for survival even if it wasn’t for their exclusion from lakes.
