Wetgrain Plains
part 2/?
Fish of the Wetgrain Plains
It is no surprise that an environment with so much water would be abundant with fish. There are countless species inhabiting different habitats on the Wetgrains, some found nowhere else in the world.
I. Pike - a common, medium sized predatory fish, found in all kinds of freshwater habitats.
II. Water elf - this rare, small fish can only be found on the Plain. They are well known for their beauty, with males spotting vibrant colorations. They also have an unusual hunting method, often obtaining their food by spitting a jet of water in the air, to take down insects flying above the water.
III. Lygin - a strange, freshwater shark. Few people who had the chance to eat one describe their flesh as delicious, with a distinct, strong flavor. They are said to live for well over a hundred years, however it isn't confirmed.
IV. A艂bast - this huge ambush predator is one of the top aquatic hunters and a symbol of Wetgrain Plains. They hunt both swimming and land animals, often equally as large. A艂bast is able to occasionally breathe air, and even crawl on land for short distances. They are well known for killing and eating humans, with their attacks being one of countless threats that make exploration of the area extremely dangerous and not worth the risk.
V. Pupfish - this bizarre, magic creature is full of mysteries. They can breathe both in and outside the water, and unlike A艂bast can sustain themselves on air for long periods of time. They survive the dry season by burying themselves in the sand and waiting for the area to be submerged again. No one knows where and how they spawn.
VI. Spikey catfish - a common scavanger. They get through the worst of dry season by entering a state of hibernation, in which they can survive without water, despite not being able to breathe air.
VII. Bagazi - this huge, majestic animal is considered sacred in several cultures. Able to grow way larger than a man, adult specimens don't have that many natural predators. They have a varied diet, feeding on both fruit and green plants, as well as other fish and small land animals. They are rare outside of Wetgrain Plains, usually found only in upper portions of Jagla and Remma.
VIII. Roach - a common freshwater fish.

A reaaally old drawing of my dragonfly seeded world from back then.
A certain clade of dragonflies evolved vertebrate-like features (inner "skeleton", more efficient respiratory system) which allowed them to reach bigger sizes... Idc if it's a lazy spec evo :P

Wetgrain plains
part 1/???
The last time I visited that place I was just a kid, but I thought I should document and share whatever information I have. Because it's a fascinating place.
Wetgrain is an enormous floodplain covered by seemingly endless swamps and other fresh water habitats.
People of that world say it is "a swamp bigger than any kingdom" and honestly, they aren't far from the truth. It is larger than any wetland you are familiar with.
It's existence is possible thanks to two major factors. It lies at the deltas and floodplains of two giant rivers: Jagla and Remma. The second factor is it's unique climate. Every year huge amounts of warm, humid air are carried north from the sea, only to be stopped by Kalane mountains. All that moisture rains down on the plain, in a wet season that can last up to six months. During that time it often rains for weeks, flooding huge swats of land.
During a shorter dry season it sees very little rain, with waters largely receding and giving way to reeds and grasslands in sizeable parts of the plain. During that time many local animals either fall back to areas submerged whole year round, or enter a state of hibernation. Many species from dryer habitats migrate to newly drained areas to take opportunity of a short, seasonal bonanza of grasses and other plants.
Because of those conditions Wetgrain plain is a maze of waterways, enormous lakes, wetlands, swamps, wetland forests, and islands of dryer land covered by forests, grasses and thicket.
It is uninhabitet and unexplored by humans, with it's only real human settlement being a small trading outpost in Midriver. Noone knows how big it really is and what unknowns hide within it.
It's name was likely given to it by the first human settlers, who discovered it during a dry season. Overjoyed by it's incredibly fertile soils they wasted no time with planting their crops and building new villages. However, just a few months later the usual wet season came in full force. All of the crops have died due to their roots getting submerged or simply being exposed to too much moisture, while most of the new settlements got completely flooded. Humans were forced to gather what they could and abandon this new land.
