Ok so I rewatched the Italian commentary of Monaco 2024's last lap, as one does, and I want to talk about a part of it that I think we've slept on all this time

I'm sure most of you know, the Italian commentary is done by Carlo Vanzini - a great, emotional voice, but especially the man who gave Charles his 'Predestinato' nickname and with whom Charles did media training at fifteen (sparking the famous 'there is no scenario in which I'm in front and fighting with my teammate for the championship at the same time', you insane child)

Vanzini has always celebrated Charles's victories with the iconic sentence "il predestinato vince" (the predestined wins), but not in this specific occasion

For Monaco, Vanzini said "Charles Leclerc vince", and then (after a little while) goes on to say "predestinato un tempo, adesso è qui, con un nome e un cognome", which translates as "once predestined, now he's here, with a name and a surname".

And listen. Vanzini himself once said that he regretted giving Charles that nickname because he felt people were using it too much, almost making it lose its significance (and, I suspect, adding a pressure on Charles's shoulders that he didn't need when things weren't going well).

So for him to not use that tried-and-true sentence, choosing to call Charles by his full name, on the most important victory of Charles's career, emotionally at the very least...

...maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I think it's a way to say that Charles doesn't need to be called predestined anymore. He has grown out of it, because there is no destiny at play. Charles writes his own story, on his own terms. His name is enough.
