I'm reading higurashi rn and i really do find characterisation fun, i know a bunch of spoilers, and i did watched some episodes of anime so it's not based purely on work but it's kinda interesting how skewed my perspective is ig. I'm very little in, only started festival in onikakushi. My overall impressions of characters under cut cause it's got bit long.
like satoko is very careful and prepares a lot but she's still ambitious? like she chose to try to shoot a teddy bear even though it seems hard, she wants to prank keichi and enjoys bullying him (fair) She's also not the most...perceptive or cunning person, like she's pretty straightforward. which is a funny thing to say cause then I'll definitely find out how she had some secret master plan all along and everything was because she pulled the strings actually. But even if so she seems properly naive and clueless in some places. Like, she is a child, it's okay for her to not know what difference between cauliflower and broccoli is (cauliflower and broccoli are both delicious so it's not that relevant), or be uncomfortable with saying "sex". Even for not a child it's okay but for child it's kinda expected? i think i like her a lot, she's literally just a kid. Need to give her sweet pastries. Satoko on her way enjoying being bit mean and wanting ppl to be afraid of her, but like in a "i wanna be respected" kinda way. I'm sad to say i know she's going (went? going to go through?) some level of domestic horrors from her uncle(?), i hope the ending is different from umineko and she'll live in a safe environment, if not — I'll be devastated.
mion seem playful and vicious during games but kinda weird if you look closely? like she doesn't go full-in, as if low-key scared of challenges? it's probably not right way to say it, it's like she gives up kinda easily? like she's using dirty tricks (the whole card thing, pretending to be zombie and spreading rumours), and when can't — opt out for what seems good enough to grant her the best outcome (shot only at candy boxes). Like she has to be sure she can get what she wants before moving in that direction. It's like she's setting herself up for failure for some reason. Also she's nice to ppl, and seem to tend to gravitate to talk like old man and talk to old men, which is.... a thing. Idk what exactly does that mean. Like she acts nonchalant like she's an old man who's just cool and laid-back, sitting in his old chair drinking beer without care in world and snoring, but spoilers leading me to believe she's pretty damn chalant. So idk. Probably she wants to be chill like that but it's hard or maybe I'm just projecting idk. She could just like masculinity or be transmasc what do i know. I like her but i also like her bc she reminds me of Jessica and i love Jessica, so I'm kinda careful about it.
Rena is too soft and forgiving for her own good, she believes and trust her friends a lot. She takes care of everyone: cooks too much so it's enough for five ppl, the whole "I'll take you home" thing and beating bc of cuteness aggression. I like that she goes all-out in competitions. And i liked that moment when she deflected keichis question about her background by asking something about his, like it's interesting cause she just could have told him she didn't wanna talk about it, but she chose to deflect. And the moment when Mion and Keichi were talking dirty she tried to stop them but by being like "eh?! what are you talking about?! talking about?!" or something among the lines was interesting. Like she's aware of subtleties and she's choosing to pretend to be not aware to maintain illusion of normality. i think she's really cute but overall she very much epitome of "mom friend" so there are probably a lot of things wrong with her parents/home life. and like. yeah. you shouldn't feel obligated to take care of everyone you care about, you're allowed to just be.
Keichi is kinda asshole but i low-key appreciate it?? like at least he's a character, he has a personality that i can have feelings towards. It seems like he's supposed to be "average common guy" but he's stil have personality traits. His urge to tease and joke around is somewhat annoying but makes sense, he has troubles communicating his feelings truthfully and earnestly +that time when he tried to joke w Tomitake but Tomitake got legit scared and thought it was a threat was relatable to me bc of autism.
Him going drunk with power and being perverted towards girlies though is not acceptable. Get killed by Asmodeus and be forgiven the sin of lust, dipshit. Although tbh it could be more, like, pride than lust but whatever. Like we read his thoughts, so we know that he's a caring person. But like. Dude. Annoying.
Rika. I don't know. I don't fucking know. I know too much spoilers abt her but also feel like bc i didn't read it i don't get it. Like she was stated by keichi to be "good kid" in contrast with satoko. which is fucked up, like Satoko is not "bad", she's like ten years old, that's a fucking baby. But like. Is she a "good kid" — meaning "obedient and polite" because she knows she's in a timeloop? Like, is it just depression that she got after getting stuck here and her original personality was different? Or maybe since I'm only on first chapter it haven't started yet idk. She's like, sharp and polite and perfectly cute right now, which is kinda boring, the only thing is that she likes petting ppls head and it's kinda patronising but other than that i don't know. I know there are a lot of things but I'm not sure what exactly and I don't know what her character is supposed to be. Like, deuteragonist probably. Or maybe not. Idk what to feel abt her yet, she's kinda like Kyrie but worse because i vaguely know what's wrong with Kyrie, and also Kyrie is cunty. So like, I'm confused but trying to be chill about it.

Haiiiii, continuing the ask game of random top5s
Top 5 videogame characters
Omg I didn’t know this was going around 😭
(Not counting characters from VNs because otherwise the whole list would just be Higurashi and Umineko characters djdjdkdkdk)
1. Mae Borowski (Night in the Woods)
Ah. Yeah KJFDNJFDKKNJD cat girl blinded and chained by nostalgia that she doesn't want to leave behind, while also being weighed down by her past mistakes as she still struggles with the guilt and the mental illness of it all. Reconnecting with old friends, only to find that they've changed and they're becoming farther and farther away for you to reach out to. Finding a way to cope with all of that and simply leaving with "I'll just continue to live" in the end — AUGH. Night in the Woods my beloved, Mae Borowski my beloved...
2. Akane Kurashiki (Zero Escape)
I remember playing 999 on the ds and just being shocked, and I remember playing vlr on the 3ds also being pretty shocked. And I didn't quite understand Akane as a character at the time because I was like 14 and I couldn't comprehend shit. But when I revisit her character now and I read a bunch of analysis stuff regarding her, I now realize just how well she's written to be in Zero Escape's narrative. For a girl to sacrifice the normality and life she had left for the sake of the world, forsaking timelines again and again so she can find the right outcome, but leaving the one she loved most behind — it's heartbreaking. It's cruel and tragic, because Akane had her life tragically ripped away too soon, so she never got to truly live at all. But to see her at the same time be cold-hearted and leave behind Junpei and the others also hurts to see. She's very well written and complex and I love her for it
3. Yosuke Hanamura (Persona 4)
I don't talk much about Yosuke, but he's a character I have a lot of beef with personally. He's a character that I look at and go "Shit, I can't help but see my teenage self in you" and it's like damn 💀 I struggled with the same goddamn things this guy did and I was shitty just like he is, and I'm looking at a mirror every time I see content about him I swear. Persona 4 was a game that got me through my teenage years, so it checks out tbh. I appreciate the growth that Yosuke himself goes through, but I do think the game does him dirty development wise 😭
4. Mizuki Okiura/Date (Ai: The Somnium Files)
I think this goes in hand with my personal experiences, but I relate to Mizuki a lot tbh. I relate to her loneliness as a child, but it was also so happy and fulfilling to see this girl get the family she deserved in the end and to see her grow up into a better version of herself, who's come to terms with her grief. I have more complicated feelings with how they handled some of her character aspects in aini, but I still appreciate how we got to see Mizuki older and see how much she's grown as a person from her 12 yr old self in aitsf
5. Ryunosuke Naruhodo (Ace Attorney/The Great Ace Attorney)
Keeping this one brief and without spoilers since I have a moot who's going through tgaa rn, but I love Ryunosuke as a protag much more than Phoenix tbh, his development throughout the duology is so good! He's silly, he's grieving, he finds a passion in something he didn't think he would excel in. His character arc overall is just very satisfying to see, and he's one of the more enjoyable protags I've played in any video game ngl
