Trusting God in the Valleys

Job.

Y’all, the Book of Job is WILD.

It kicks off with this almost unthinkable conversation between God and the Devil. The Devil points out Job—this man who’s been loyal, faithful, blameless his whole life—and says, “Well, of course, he’s faithful. Look at everything he has! Take it all away, and watch what happens. I bet he’ll curse You to Your face.”

And God allows the test. He told the Devil, “Go ahead. Do what you want with him—just don’t take his life.”

Challenge accepted.

But here’s the incredible thing: God knew Job’s heart. This wasn’t some blind test or gamble; it was rooted in the deep relationship between God and Job. At one point, God even calls Job “friend.” Think about that—God wasn’t putting Job through this because He doubted him. He knew Job so well, loved him so deeply, that He was confident Job’s faith would hold strong.

God knew that no matter what the Devil threw at him—no matter the pain, loss, or heartache—Job’s heart was anchored in Him. God trusted Job’s loyalty because He understood his heart like no one else could.

And so, the Devil took everything. Job’s family, his wealth, his health—it was all gone. He ended up sitting in ashes, covered in sores, broken and alone. And the only people left around him were three “friends” who didn’t exactly do much to comfort Job.

These friends basically spent chapters telling him he must’ve done something wrong. Over and over, they insisted, “Come on, Job, God wouldn’t let this happen to you if you were truly innocent. Own up to whatever it is you’ve done wrong, and maybe things will turn around.”

One friend, Bildad, really drove it home in Chapter 18. He told Job, “The light of the wicked is put out.” In other words, people who go through suffering like this must be far from God. Bildad was convinced Job’s suffering was punishment, plain and simple.

But here’s the thing—Job didn’t back down. He didn’t say, “Yeah, maybe I deserve this.” He knew he hadn’t sinned against God, and he refused to lie just to make his friends more comfortable. Instead, he challenged them. “Take it up with God—He’s allowed all of this,” he told them.

Job’s friends couldn’t see his heart, but God could. God knew his integrity, his faith, and his loyalty. Even when Job was at his lowest, he clung to that truth.

Job went on to list his pain, his isolation, his loss. He had nothing. His family was gone, his friends had turned on him, his body was failing. He was barely more than bones. He’d lost it all.

And then, in the middle of his suffering, in Chapter 19, verse 25, Job makes one of the most remarkable declarations of faith: “For I know that my Redeemer lives.”

After everything—the suffering, the heartbreak, the loneliness—Job still held onto his faith. He believed, deeply, that God was with him. He knew that, even after all he’d lost, God was still his Redeemer. He believed that at the end of his suffering, he would see God face-to-face. “I shall see for myself,” he said.

God didn’t just see Job’s suffering; He saw Job’s heart. And that’s why He trusted him. Job’s story isn’t just about his endurance through hardship; it’s about a relationship so deep that God could trust him with this test, knowing Job’s heart would stay true.

I’ve been thinking about that a lot lately—how God is the same whether we’re in the valleys or on the mountaintops. He sees our struggles, yes, but He also sees the heart behind them. He knows when we’re clinging to Him, even when we’re barely holding on. He’s faithful in our highs and in our lows.

The God who knew Job’s heart so intimately knows ours too. He sees us in our valleys, and He never leaves us there alone. The same God who trusted Job’s heart in the hardest of times is the same God who walks with us through ours. He’s not just the God of blessing and abundance—He’s the God who stays with us in the desolate places.

Our God doesn’t leave us in our valleys. He doesn’t abandon us in our brokenness. He’s the God of restoration, of patience, of steadfast love. The same God who held Job’s heart in his darkest hour is the same God who holds ours.

And maybe that’s the most comforting part of all—knowing that God sees us completely. He sees our fears, our doubts, our faith, and our loyalty, even when the world doesn’t. And because of that, we can trust that no matter what comes, our Redeemer lives. We are never alone. God knows our hearts. And that changes everything.

Dating Delilah Part 2 Final

Following my recent Bible study titled Dating Delilah, a series preached by my pastor, I want to highlight a few more key points from Samson's story. In Judges 16:28, we see Samson making his final, heartfelt plea to God: “Then Samson called to the Lord, saying, ‘O Lord God, please remember me and please strengthen me just this once, O God, that I may be avenged on the Philistines for my two eyes.’” It’s really moving to think about this—Samson had only made two big prayers in his life. The first was for water after a tough battle (Judges 15:18), and the second was this desperate request for strength. Even though Samson had a divine calling and had seen God answer his prayers before, he chose to ask for strength to get revenge instead of seeking wisdom or self-control.

Samson’s story is incredibly sad. Despite knowing from birth that he had a special purpose, he made a series of poor choices. He got drunk, had relationships with prostitutes, and was ultimately betrayed by Delilah. Her name means "temptation," and she played a big role in his downfall by leading him astray. Samson’s eyes, which had once been a source of his troubles, symbolized his ruin. He saw a Philistine woman in Timna, married her despite his parents' objections, and she and her family were later killed by the Philistines. He then fell for Delilah, a prostitute he met in Gaza, which added to his disgrace. His eyes were gouged out, and he was imprisoned and forced to grind grain.

Samson led Israel for 20 years, but his life serves as a cautionary tale. It’s a powerful reminder of the importance of seeking God’s guidance and resisting temptation and pride. Even though Samson is listed in Hebrews 11:32-34 as someone of faith—“And what more shall I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets, who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, were made strong out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight”—his story is still a tough one to swallow. The Bible offers many examples of faithful living, such as Joseph's integrity, David's repentance, and Daniel's steadfastness. Samson’s life, on the other hand, is unfortunately an example of what not to do.

Proverbs 16:18 sums it up perfectly: “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” Samson’s story teaches us about the need to stay humble and seek God’s help, making it an important lesson for all of us. Samara S.C

Paul’s Opening Letter to the Galatians Divine Calling and True Gospel

"Galatians 1: Embracing the True Gospel with Paul’s Passion"

Have you ever watched a movie where the protagonist undergoes a radical transformation, becoming a hero against all odds? That’s exactly the kind of dynamic and inspiring journey we find in Galatians 1, with Apostle Paul as our protagonist.

Paul opens his letter with a bang, asserting his apostleship with the authority of someone chosen directly by Jesus Christ and God the Father. It’s like a superhero declaring their mission: “I’m here to protect the city, and I have the power to do it!” Paul’s divine appointment sets him apart, giving him the credibility to address the Galatians’ issues head-on.

He expresses his shock and dismay at how quickly the Galatians have abandoned the true gospel for a distorted one. Imagine a beloved coach finding out his team has swapped out his winning strategy for a losing one. Paul’s reaction is filled with urgency and concern, emphasizing that there is no other gospel and that anyone preaching a different message should face severe consequences.

Paul’s defense of the true gospel is rooted in his dramatic life story. He was once an ardent follower of Judaism, known for his zeal in persecuting Christians. But then, in a dramatic turn of events, God revealed His Son to Paul, transforming him from persecutor to preacher. It’s a classic redemption arc that shows the power of God’s grace to change lives.

After his conversion, Paul didn’t seek validation from human authorities. Instead, he went to Arabia and Damascus, guided by divine revelation. Only after three years did he meet Peter and James in Jerusalem. This independent journey highlights the authenticity of his mission and the divine source of his message.

Galatians 1 is a powerful reminder that the gospel we follow is not a man-made invention but a divine revelation. It calls us to embrace the true gospel with passion and urgency, just as Paul did. Let’s be inspired by Paul’s unwavering commitment and let the transformative power of God’s grace shape our lives and our faith.

The Cost of Insecurity | 1 Samuel 8:10-18

Are you sure you want to do that?

Welcome to the Daily Devo. I am Vince Miller.

This week, we are in 1 Samuel 8. I've titled this chapter "When Our Insecurities Define Us."

Today, our text is 1 Samuel 8:10-18, which reads:

So Samuel told all the words of the Lord to the people who were asking for a king from him. He said, “These will be the ways of the king who will reign over you: he will take your sons and appoint them to his chariots and to be his horsemen and to run before his chariots. And he will appoint for himself commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and some to plow his ground and to reap his harvest, and to make his implements of war and the equipment of his chariots. He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers. He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive orchards and give them to his servants. He will take the tenth of your grain and of your vineyards and give it to his officers and to his servants. He will take your male servants and female servants and the best of your young men and your donkeys, and put them to his work. He will take the tenth of your flocks, and you shall be his slaves. And in that day you will cry out because of your king, whom you have chosen for yourselves, but the Lord will not answer you in that day.” — 1 Samuel 8:10-18

That sounds fun. Sign me up!

But as ironic as it is, that's precisely what God's people decided. Even though Samuel carefully itemized a number of things a king would take from them. Did you hear the list? Did you notice the repetition of the verb "to take"?

Samuel clearly delineated that a king would “take” their:

Sons (v. 11)

Daughters (v. 13)

The best of their fields (v. 14)

The best of their vineyards (v. 14)

The best of their olive orchards (v. 14)

A tenth of their produce (v. 15)

Their servants (v. 16)

Their young men (v. 16)

Their donkeys (v. 16)

Then Samuel closes with this hand-washing declaration, "And in that day you will cry out because of your king, whom you have chosen for yourselves, but the Lord will not answer you in that day.”

We all make foolish decisions. But when we make foolish decisions, conscious of the consequences, we make fools of ourselves. And then, as Samuel declares, there will come a day when we want salvation from our foolish decisions. At this moment, we will cry out like fools.

Do you know how you stop making foolish decisions? You get wisdom from wise men who know God and heed their instruction. So if you are insecure and need wisdom today, ask a man wiser than yourself!

Lord, grant me the wisdom to seek and heed godly counsel in my decisions. Help me to trust in Your guidance and avoid the pitfalls of my own foolishness. Amen.
