Evaluation of the environmental parameters in several places of Moscow with Electrophotonic Imaging technique

Introduction As part of the plan to conduct experimental studies with the Bio-Well and "Sputnik" sensor, a series of experiments to measure the parameters of space in a number of places in Moscow city was carried out on April 17 to 19, 2016. Methods April 17, 2016: With the blessings of Father Abbot Nicholas, a series of measurements was carried out at the Church of St. Nicholas in Tolmachy. In this temple is preserved the holy Vladimir icon of the Mother of God, brought to Russia from Constantinople at the time of the Grand Duke of Kiev, Yuri Dolgoruky (1090–1157). The histories of Moscow and of the icon of Vladimir Mother of God are eternally inseparable. How many times did the Mother of God save the capital city from enemies through the grace of her holy icon? This icon has linked Apostolic times to Byzantium, Kievan Rus to Vladimir Rus, and later to Muscovy, the Third Rome; as it is said, “there will be no Fourth.” The kingdom of Moscow was formed by divine Providence and embraced the mystical ties of ancient empires, historical experience and traditions of other Orthodox peoples. The miracle-working Vladimir icon became a symbol of unity and succession. The icon survived centuries of wars and unrest in Russia, and for many centuries, it was a symbol of God's protection of the Russian land. Since the mid-1930s, the icon has been kept in the Tretyakov Gallery exhibition in Moscow, and was later transferred to the Church of St. Nicholas. On the morning of April 17, we were given permission to mount the sensor "Sputnik" near the Vladimir icon of the Mother of God, with the back of her hand at a distance of about one meter from the icon. The sensor operated in a continuous mode, parameters were recorded every 5 seconds, we were unable to control data before final processing, and so, the experiment was conducted in double-blind mode. During the whole time, there were over 200 people in the Temple. At the end of the Sunday service in the Temple, the registration of parameters was carried out with the same device at the entrance to the Temple, and at the exit of the Temple. The temperature was in the range of 250C, humidity about 50%. Data analysis was carried out later on the Bio-Well server, when we connected to the internet. On the evening of the same day, “Sputnik” parameters were recorded by the same device indoors of the Evangelical Lutheran Cathedral of Sts. Peter and Paul during the concert of organ music, with participation of duduk and tenor. April 18: “Sputnik” parameters were recorded at Novodevichy Cemetery near the grave of Anton Chekhov, and on April 19 at Perepechinsky cemetery near the grave of an unknown person. On both days, the weather was clear and sunny, with a temperature of 11–120C, humidity 50–60% in the absence of wind. Results In data processing, we are interested both in the value of environmental parameters and in the dynamic response of the “Sputnik” sensor to the events taking place in this environment. In the Temple of St. Nicholas, the recording was held before and during the Sunday service, which was reflected in the change in the parameters. Fig. 1 shows the dynamic curve of the energy parameter within 140 minutes. The first 10 minutes of recording were carried out before the service. When the reading of the Psalter started, with the choir joining after 40 minutes, the signal was reduced; however, with the beginning of the service, it began to increase; about an hour after the beginning of the service, the signal reached a stable level, and remained there for another 40 minutes till the end of the recording, slightly decreasing by the end (Fig. 1). The “Environment Activity" index (see description in the Discussion section) was within the range of the minimum values, slightly changing during the service (Fig. 2).

They only get the time to relax a little in late February, and she and Theo are sitting together inside Isaac’s empty classroom late at night. It’s a Saturday, for once, where the two of them could hang out alone, and while it’s too cold outside to stay at the rooftop, the physics building has classrooms with wide windows that still face the town. Hanging out in their friend’s—well, not even his classroom! But who cares?—is as good as any. The two of them have thermoses of hot chocolate from the cafeteria downstairs, bought right before it closed, and they’re sharing a little box of chocolates, too.

The chocolates, of course, were bought from the clearance rack at the university grocery after Valentine’s. “Easily the best thing you can get,” she said—“premium on the 14th, trash on the 15th, absolute garbage on the 21st. Can’t believe how cheap these ‘high-end’ chocolates go a week past a commercialized holiday.” They didn’t get anything for each other for Valentine’s—well, why would they?—so now they’re just sharing the buy-1-take-1 box, looking out below.

“Are you sure your friend won’t mind that we’re up here?” Theo asks, turning to her a little insecurely. They have left the lights of the classroom turned off and the doors closed to enjoy as much of the view. She did tell the guard downstairs that they were going to do something for class upstairs, and that wasn’t entirely a lie, but…

“Nah, he won’t. Dazai and I hang out here when we want to hide away. Isaac’s too good at teaching physics, many of his students actually get a little scared of him, so… only a few brave ones really pass by here,” she explains, popping another chocolate in her mouth. “Mm, caramel filling, this one’s good.”

Officially, their little book club discussion was already done. It’s weeks and weeks of many little insights that only got to get poured out today, but also mini book reviews and discussion of their most recently exchanged books—her, Sputnik Sweetheart; and Theo, a book of poetry titled The Proxy Eros. It was her idea to go with little romance-y books to read over Valentine’s, entirely for the spectacle of it. It was also her idea to not go home yet, asking, “keep me company for a little bit more?” because she knew that he knew that that meant there’s something she wants to talk about, but isn’t sure where to start.

She relies so much on Theo knowing her and sometimes she’s so relieved how transparent she is. How far along now this friendship is.

So they sit. Theo, looking out at the city below, and her, humming a small tune as she closes her eyes and puts more chocolates in her mouth. Two boxes of 25 chocolate balls each is a lot, but she doesn’t have anything left to do for the day—and neither does Theo. She assumes that sitting next to her isn’t entirely something he’s opposed to, at least since he’s decided to stay. He offers her his dependable, companionable silence.

Until she finds the words to begin.

“I’m just nervous about the scholarship,” she finally says, slumping over the desk of the chair, flopping down. “I told you about it, right? The interviews.”

“They were this week.”

“Yeah,” she nods. “I don’t know how well I did. I may… have not been able to sleep properly the night before, and I took maybe one too many shots of espresso that morning, so I was sort of… jumping around, kind of nervously… I don’t know how that translated to the panel, I feel like I just shot myself in the foot.”

“You tend to underestimate yourself,” Theo comments, taking a sip of his hot chocolate. “Maybe that’s exactly what’s happening.”

“I don’t.”

“You do,” Theo insists. “Do you remember when I made you read Les Miserables in a week?”

She groans. “No, okay, I could read it in a week because I already knew what happened because we discussed it in class. It’s not as big as a challenge as it seems to be.”

“And Don Quixote?”

“Also in class.”

“Anna Karenina.”

“—Wait, that phase where all you gave me were classical books, that was you messing with me?”

Theo turns away, but not soon enough for her not to see him smirk. “Maybe.”

She frowns. “You’re lucky I actually enjoy reading them.”

“You had a lot of insight about them, indeed.” Theo snorts. “The point is—you kept saying you don’t think you’ll do good in reading or analyzing it, even if you can. You’re probably doing the same for this.”

For a small moment, she lets that sink in, trying to absorb what Theo had said and just letting it linger in the quiet. And then she frowns. “I told them I wanted to go away,” she says softly. “I told them I thought it would be extremely beneficial for my growth as a person, to be given the opportunity.”

Theo doesn’t answer, just nods.

She continues to fret. “But what if it translated wrong? What if they thought that meant all I’m good at is running away at all the good things that have been given to me? What if it sounded like I didn’t like it here. I mean I don’t, but. Not that way? I might have just ended up telling the school administration that I’m not happy with my stay here and that all of this isn’t enough for shit.”

Theo shakes his head. “Just because you want more doesn’t mean what’s already here isn’t enough.”

“What?” She turns to Theo. “What does that even mean? Of course you want more because it’s not enough.”

“Wanting more of something you already have is not the same as wanting different,” He clarifies. “You’re tired of this—but it’s enough. It’s given you just enough to be able to have an opportunity to reach out to different, which is what the scholarship is to you. Isn’t it?”

And Theo is right. She’s starting to curse at how right Theo is sometimes, how easily he sees through the things that confuse her. It’s as if he knows her just about as much as she knows herself, in the parts that… well, in the parts that matter. And that’s both scary and comforting, in a way she cannot put into words.

“Yeah, it is,” she says. “That makes sense, actually.”

“You’ll do well at the scholarship,” he says, simply, like he’s so sure of the answer, like he’s the one giving that decision away. “Haven’t seen anyone work as hard for something like that as you have. I’m sure you’ve blown them away. And even if you didn’t—I’m sure they’ll offer you something in its stead.”

She wonders for a moment what that could look like. Something to replace her dream of going away—something equally worth it, perhaps. What could they offer her that is already here for her taking? What would staying here give her that going away cannot?

She can’t imagine it now, but maybe she will eventually.

She wonders what Theo has in mind.

“You think? Like what?”

Theo grins, raising the box of chocolates. “The best thing you can get here: clearance rack sweets, what else?”

How did they say it then? Like falling asleep—slowly, and then all at once?

What lucky people those are, to have it come gently, in a moment of rest.

Not for her.

It comes as a slap.

A bullet fired straight to her temple from a gun she had aimed there herself.

It’s a little silly, because it doesn’t make sense. They’ve arguably shared way more “intimate” moments than these, sharing cheap chocolates in a dim classroom. There have been a million other opportunities for the realization to sink in, for it to finally hit her, for it to finally come to full blossom.

No, it chose this moment.

Walking downstairs the physics building, the steady sound of Theo’s footsteps next to her.

She’d let him hold her heart in his hands and he cradled it. And then let her eat most of the chocolates. And then let her talk until her heart was empty of the static that was beating through her veins, numbing her hands.

And even now, he lets her stays close to him. So close to him she can hear him breathing, a rhythmic in and out. So close to him she can see the flick of his eyelashes. So close to him if she just reached out maybe she could kis—

Oh.

She keeps her hands behind her back and lets the feeling sink into a warm pool of butterflies in the pit of her chocolate-sweet stomach.

Theo walks her home that night, saying goodbye at the staircase of her apartment complex with a small wave of the hand. He thanks her for the chocolates (she made him take home what was left of the second box, and that was still most of its contents) and she thanks him for listening to her, to which they both laugh at each other. She says she’ll drop by their house soon to help Vincent with more prepwork on the exhibit—but that mostly, she hopes to see him soon. He waves her off and doesn’t leave until he spots the door to her room close.

For a moment, some sort of relief washes over Theo in a way he cannot explain. He begins to pick at it as he walks away: so much has happened since fall and since then, he’s really enjoyed her company with him through all this—planning the exhibit, and now helping out with the pieces itself with Vincent. He thought she would be nothing but a pain when he’d first talked to her at the bookstore, but that’s only because he only thinks anything brought about by Arthur is trouble. She had turned out to be anything but—the banter is some sort of fun, and he really does appreciate her company, even tucked in the silences between.

But then the relief makes way for a tangible kind of loneliness, the kind that feels very heavy; Theo is able to deny it now because he has a coat on over a few more layers of jackets and shirts and sweaters, but later, when he is sitting down on his bed after a warm shower, he will no longer be able to deny it. Settling on his shoulders like a demon. It’s not that he doesn’t want her to go, but—maybe he does? Isn’t it normal for someone to be a little sad that their friend is going away? But this, this isn’t a little, he knows, but he doesn’t want to rest his thoughts too deeply on it lest it becomes real.

Maybe he’ll have the opportunity to say something to her about this soon. Before she leaves, maybe.

Nestled in the quiet of the snowfall, he tries his best not to think about her, the crescent moon of her smile, the curl of her hair, and walks the entire twenty minutes back home in wintry silence.

He decides he would rather not think about it, and the universe hears him, saying, then don’t.

The next week, he finishes his Thursday class and makes his way home, like he usually does. Dusts his pants off at the doorstep, like he always does. Jiggles the doorknob before inserting the key and opening it, like he always does. Says, “I’m home,” to the living room, even if he knows it’s likely to be empty, Vincent working in his studio, like he always does.

The living room is not empty.

“Theo, Theo, oh my god, you were right!” she says, suddenly flooding his vision, suddenly all he can take in. “I got in! I got in! I won the scholarship!”

And Theo knows—he should have answered with a dry remark, like he always does. Laugh at her pouty face, like he always does. And then support her anyway, like he always does.

Maybe even pat her on the head, ruffle her hair, like he never does.

But he doesn’t.

It takes all of his strength to say, “I told you so. Congratulations.”

To listen to her gush about the scholarship. Where she’s going, how much they’re sponsoring, how long she will stay out there.

To fake a smile, to say he’s going to go take a warm bath, and—

Pick up the parts of his heart that had shattered once it met the floor.

I love Junji Ito!! I’ve been a fan since elementary school. I remember when my family used to rent movies at the local rental shop and they had a section for foreign horror movies. I watched Tomie and was immediately in love. I didn’t know Junji Ito wrote it until a few years later when I started reading manga online. Since then, I loved all of his work.

ZyCoV-D, a needle-free three-dose COVID-19 vaccine developed by Indian pharmaceutical firm Zydus Cadila received an emergency use license in India on Friday, after a government panel recommended the same to India's central drug authority.

The Ahmedabad-based pharma major had on 1 July applied for emergency use authorisation (EUA) with the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) for the vaccine. The company said it has conducted the largest clinical trial for the vaccine in India in over 50 centres so far.

Why is this relevant?

ZyCoV-D is the world's first DNA vaccine against the SARS-Cov-2 virus infection, developed by an Indian company and become the sixth vaccine that has been approved for use in the country after Serum Institute's Covishield, Bharat Biotech's Covaxin, Russia's Sputnik V and the US-made Moderna and Johnson and Johnson.

It is also the first vaccine candidate in India that has been found safe for use in children above the age of 12. Countries like US, France and Germany are already at various stages of providing vaccines for minors. In India, apart from ZyCoV-D, Bharat biotech's Covaxin is also under trial for use among the 2 to 18-year-old population.

Zydus Cadila, that already has anti-COVID treatments available in the market claimed to have conducted the largest clinical trial in India so far at over 50 centers and the participants included people between age group 12 and 18 years. The Covaxin trial includes 525 minor volunteers.

How is it different from other vaccines?

 ZyCoV-D is a three-dose vaccine, unlike Bharat Biotech's Covaxin and Serum Institute of India-manufactured Covishield jabs.

However, the company said it has also evaluated a two-dose regimen for ZyCoV-D vaccine using a 3-milligram dose per visit and the immunogenicity results had been found to be equivalent to the current three-dose regimen.

This will further help in reducing the full course duration of vaccination while maintaining the high safety profile of the vaccine in the future, the company added.

ZyCoV-D is touted to be a 'needle-free' vaccine.

It is an intradermal vaccine, which is applied using The PharmaJet needle-free system.  Needle-free injectors deliver the vaccine using a narrow stream of fluid to penetrate the skin and deliver the vaccine to the proper tissue depth. The company says this methodology can eliminate chances of needlestick injury and will also lead to a significant reduction in any kind of side effects. It will also help people suffering from trypanophobia, a common condition marked by an irrational fear of blood or needles. It's estimated that fear of needles affects up to 25 percent of adults.

ZyCoV-D is not very sensitive to temperature, unlike its competitors. The prescribed storage temperature is between 2 to 8 degrees centigrade but has shown good stability at temperatures of 25 degrees centigrade as well for at least three months.

The thermostability of the vaccine will help in easy transportation and storage of the vaccine and reduce any cold chain breakdown challenges leading to vaccine wastage.

The plasmid DNA platform provides ease of manufacturing with minimal biosafety requirements.

It can be manufactured at a BSL-1 grade lab which brings down the cost of production and ensures that the cost of expanding production units. In comparison, Covaxin needs a Bio-Safety Level 3 lab to manufacture the jab.

The Plasmid DNA platform also allows generating new constructs quickly to deal with mutations in the virus, such as those already occurring

The science behind the jab: How does it work?

ZyCoV-D is a plasmid DNA vaccine which when injected produces the spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and elicits an immune response mediated by the cellular and humoral arms of the human immune system, which play a vital role in protection from disease as well as viral clearance.

In simpler words, it means that the vaccine is manufactured by creating a close enough copy of the virus' DNA sequence so that no harm or disease is caused, but the immune system response is triggered when the body encounters the real virus the next time.

Interim efficacy results

The vaccine has shown a primary efficacy of 66.6 percent for symptomatic RT-PCR positive cases in the interim analysis. Whereas, no moderate case of COVID-19 disease was observed in the vaccine beneficiaries post administration of the third dose suggesting 100% efficacy for moderate disease.

No severe cases or deaths due to COVID-19 occurred in the vaccine recipients after administration of the second dose of the vaccine.

However, its phase three trial data is not yet peer-reviewed.

The vaccine manufacturers also claimed that the vaccine's efficacy data were collected through India's largest clinical trial for a coronavirus vaccine so far. A study carried out in more than 50 clinical sites spread across the country and during the peak of the second wave of COVID-19 reaffirming the vaccine's efficacy against the new mutant strains especially the delta variant, Cadila Healthcare managing director Dr Patel said.

He also emphasised that the plasmid DNA platform is ideally suited for dealing with COVID-19 as it can be easily adapted to deal with mutations in the virus. Moreover, the DNA vaccines offer a number of potential advantages over traditional approaches that include stimulation of both B and T cell responses, improving the vaccine stability, says WHO.

Availability and pricing

The company said that it can be ready for rollout within 45 to 60 days of getting approval. The company plans to manufacture 10 to 12 crore doses annually in the early stages. However, the company did not give any hint on the expected price of the vaccine jab. It clarified that the price of the vaccine will be charged separately and the needle-free applicator will come at a separate cost. The company has, however, not yet decided if it will roll out the final product by clubbing the prices of the jab and the applicator.

"It is too early to comment on the pricing. That discussion is yet to happen. We will announce the price before the commercial launch of ZyCoV-D," Patel told a press conference. He said that so far up to Rs 500 crore has been invested in the development of the Zydus vaccine.

An informative new Security Council (SC) report circulating in the Kremlin today first noting Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova revealing that the West has not yet stopped its information campaign against the Russian coronavirus vaccine Sputnik V, says most important was her stating: “It is evident that the campaign against our vaccine has been ongoing for many months…The backbone of that information hydra was broken by Westerners, by the way, after they had either rolled out vaccination with the Russian vaccine or started asking for its deliveries, or started calling for joint production on their territories…But it does not mean that this smear information campaign is over yet”.

Not being told to the American people about Sputnik V, however, is that the Gamaleya Research Institute was able to be develop it so rapidly because they had already been working on its variants for decades—a development of Sputnik V that took only months to achieve—and was based on the Ebola virus platform Russian scientists have been working on for over 20-years—is also why this research institute was able to quickly develop a vaccine for the MERS virus—and when COVID-19 first appeared last year, saw its director Doctor-Scientist Aleksandar Ginzburg stating: “We were well-prepared in advance for this work…Over the past 20 and more years, our institute has been developing a platform that allows the replacement of defective genes with well-functioning ones…This technology was well-developed, but it was not adopted for practice due to economic and other circumstances”.  

That Russian scientists have been working extensively on the vaccine against Ebola is not a secret, but their progress in that area went pretty much unnoticed—specifically because there is no financial profit incentives for pharmaceutical companies to invest hundreds-of-millions of dollars in developing a vaccine mainly for poor African countries—which meant that besides the Gamaleya Research Institute, only the American multinational pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson continued researching the Ebola virus.

And is critical to notice, because immediately after Russia registered the Sputnik V vaccine, Johnson & Johnson quickly followed the same research path to gain emergency use authorization for its COVID-19 vaccine, and in its announcement stated: “The Company’s COVID-19 vaccine leverages the AdVac® vaccine platform, a unique and proprietary technology that was also used to develop and manufacture Janssen’s European Commission-approved Ebola vaccine regimen and construct its investigational Zika, RSV, and HIV vaccines”.

Unlike the Gamaleya Research Institute and Johnson & Johnson, both of whom leveraged their decades of Ebola virus research to quickly develop inactivated vaccines (or killed vaccines) against COVID-19 using dead coronavirus particles to build up immunity, the American bio-pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca and American bio-technology company Moderna took a new research path to develop their COVID-19 vaccines using Messenger RNA—otherwise known as “mRNA”—and sees these types of vaccines using live coronavirus particles—about which is known: “RNA instability is one of the biggest hurdles for researchers developing nucleic acid based vaccines…It is the primary reason for the technology’s stringent cold chain requirements and has been addressed by encapsulating the mRNA in lipid nanoparticles”—and in The Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences late last year, saw Professor of Biopharmaceutics Daan J.A. Crommelin warning: “The complete, intact mRNA molecule is essential to its potency as a vaccine…Even a minor degradation reaction, anywhere along a mRNA strand, can severely slow or stop proper translation performance of that strand and thus result in the incomplete expression of the target antigen”.

This warning about mRNA vaccines was brought into grim focus this past week when leaked emails revealed that the European Medicines Agency raised concerns with Pfizer that the vaccine contained lower levels of intact mRNA molecules than expected—and were leaked emails followed by the shocking news that 9 patients in a Devon-England nursing home who received mRNA vaccines suddenly died of the coronavirus.

Even more concerning, unlike the inactivated vaccines that don’t cause an inflammatory response of white cells leading to deadly blood clots, reports are now emerging that those receiving mRNA vaccines are dying of blood clots—and as revealed in the just published Bloomberg News article “AstraZeneca’s EU Vaccine Disaster Deepens on Clots”, wherein it states: “AstraZeneca Plc’s European vaccine nightmare is worsening, with a number of countries halting shots over safety fears as further delivery delays prompt governments around the world to hoard doses they’ve already got...At least 10 countries including Italy and Norway reacted after Austria, and later Denmark, raised concerns over the possible side effects from two batches”.

In what is being called “another tragic coincidence”, a few hours ago middle-weight boxing legend Marvelous Marvin Hagler died in an ICU after receiving a mRNA vaccine for COVID—and looming into the future for those who’ve received mRNA vaccines for COVID is an even greater potential catastrophe—a catastrophe whose names are  B.1.1.7, B.1.351, and P.1—which are the 3 major variants of COVID sweeping across the globe—variants the Sputnik V vaccine protests against, also sees the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine being effective against these variants—but are variants mRNA vaccines aren’t even designed to protect against.

With articles like “Russia Offers Europe Win-Win Vaccine Solution” pointing out the obvious truth: “Russia’s willingness to supply its vaccine to other nations reflects a sound medical strategy of promoting widespread and speedy immunization...The global pandemic requires a collective solution…No nation is safe until all are safe”, most urgently needed for the American people to do is to understand the facts behind articles like “Top US Billionaires Multiplied Their Fortune During Pandemic”, that reveals: “Nine of the richest people in the US have increased their prosperity by a combined total of more than $360 billion in the past year”—and when understanding, would see them being able to know the true reality being exposed in the article “Vaccine Nationalism: The Virulent Covid-19 Strain We Really Should Be Talking About”,  wherein it states the real economic truth about this disease:

Of particular worry is the risk of an ‘escape’ mutation that allows the virus to circumvent the immune response mechanisms triggered by the vaccines – turning them into, in effect, little more than fool’s gold.

Naturally, pharmaceutical companies with vaccine approaches in the pipeline and billions at stake will claim to be able to tailor their vaccines to tackle these new variants.

Not coincidentally, over the past week, efforts at the World Trade Organization to temporarily suspend intellectual property protections for vaccines – so as to allow unique approaches to be duplicated by other companies for scalability – were blocked, with opponents, including the US Chamber of Commerce, arguing that vaccine development and distribution would be hampered.

J.M. DONELLAN is a writer, musician, poet, and teacher. He was almost devoured by a tiger in the jungles of Malaysia, nearly died of a lung collapse in the Nepalese Himalayas and fended off a pack of rabid dogs with a guitar in the mountains of India.

A Beginner's Guide to Dying in India By Josh Donellan

His debut novel A Beginner’s Guide to Dying in India was released in 2009. Josh was a state finalist in the 2012 and 2014 Australian Poetry Slams and a national finalist in 2015. His play, We Are All Ghosts, was performed as part of the Anywhere Theatre Festival in 2014. He also co-wrote the Theory of Everything, which completely sold out its entire season at the 2015 Brisbane Festival. Josh has spoken and performed at numerous festivals around Australia including Sydney Writers’ Festival, TEDxBrisbane (twice), the Wonderland Festival, and various not-entirely-legal warehouse parties in an array of secret locales.

His children’s fantasy novel Zeb and the Great Ruckus was described by one child as ‘the best book ever, but it should have had Dr. Who in it.’ His most recent novel, Killing Adonis has received rave reviews from numerous magazines and newspapers, both here and in the USA, including a Kirkus starred review. His poetry collection Stendhal Syndrome was released in 2016 and will soon be followed by his forthcoming collection of poems for kids entitled 19 ½ Secret Spells Disguised As Poems, which is definitely not a book of spells (unless you are a kid reading this in which case it is definitely a book of spells). In 2018 he collaborated with choreographer Liesel Zink to create the spoken word/dance performance Inter. Josh also writes and directs the podcast fiction series Six Cold Feet. He’s done a bunch of other stuff as well but honestly this bio is long enough already and no one likes a braggart.

What are one to three books that have greatly influenced your life? 

1.    I read the Lord of the Rings trilogy as kid and I have a distinct memory of thinking ‘Well, that’s it for me. I want to be a writer. Why the hell would you do anything else?’

2.    I read Murakami’s Sputnik Sweetheart at university and I loved the way it completely obliterated my previous notions of how a story should work and reinforced the very important idea that a book really can be whatever the hell you want it to be.

3.    More recently, I read Jennifer Egan’s ‘Look At Me’ and it felt like stepping into another world. I think about that novel at least once a week. It exists on a whole other plain of reality for me.

What purchase of $100 or less has most positively impacted your life in the last six months (or in recent memory)?      

I bought one of those armbands to put your phone in while exercising and recently got back into running for the first time in years. I forgot how happy it makes me, for someone who sits on their butt staring at the screen a good chunk of the day exercise is hugely important, not just for the body but for creativity and mental health. I think of depression as a physical nemesis I have to fight to keep at bay, and running feels like wielding a magical sword at the great black dog. 

How has a failure, or apparent failure, set you up for later success? 

I think the first time you really crash on stage is such an important learning experience. Once you’ve lived through that you know what it looks like and you realise that while it’s not fun, it’s also nowhere near as bad as your anxiety was promising it would be. Even better if you have a truly catastrophic public appearance early on, because then all subsequent failures aren’t as bad in comparison.

Are there any quotes you think of often or live your life by?

A long time ago my friend and I went to see a local play where the audience was forcibly pulled on stage and made to feel really uncomfortable. I love immersive theatre, but this was a very unpleasant and unwelcome experience. Afterwards she said to me ‘I don’t think that director loves his audience. You have to love your audience.’ I think about that every time I sit down to write. Bear in mind, love doesn’t always mean doing the easiest or most immediately satisfying thing, it means ultimately doing what you believe is best for someone, even if it’s difficult in the short term.

What is one of the best investment in a writing resource you’ve ever made? 

Scrivener. I am weirdly evangelical about that program. I swear I’m not getting paid endorsement money or anything, even if I do occasionally grab a megaphone and run around writers’ festivals yelling “Oi! Are you lot using Scrivener? It’s the BEST!”

What is an unusual habit or an absurd thing that you love? 

My favourite animal is the mantis shrimp, the most absurd and beautiful creature to ever walk the earth. It looks like a technicolour hellbeast and it has the most complex eyes of any living organism. It’s weird how much I love that animal.

In the last five years, what new belief, behaviour, or habit has most improved your life? 

I used to think that the ultimate form of writing was a novel, and that everything else was just auxiliary formats. These days I’m writing across theatre, podcasts, video games etc. and I’ve really learned to love the nuances and possibilities of each medium. The novel is ideal for exploring a character’s inner world; the podcast is perfect for drawing the listener in with subtle, non-verbal sound cues; theatre has an incredible capacity to tell the same story in a whole new way with each performance. I’ve really enjoyed learning to embrace that.

What advice would you give to a smart, driven aspiring author? What advice should they ignore? 

I think the main thing is to realise that figure out what your process is going to be is a good chunk of the job. So many writers make the mistake of trying to study the process of their idols and replicate it verbatim, but it’s really about finding your own path. Maybe that means going on a vision quest, maybe it means drinking six cups of coffee and listening to Mogwai on repeat, maybe it means writing in your underwear while the sweat cascades down your fingers and hoping it doesn’t fry the battery in your laptop (that one might be Queensland specific, it’s very warm here).

What are bad recommendations you hear in your profession often? 

There’s a weird idea in the writing community that if you don’t study creative writing at university you’re not taking it seriously, which is not only a heinously privileged perspective but also one that seems anomalous compared to other art forms. So many directors, actors, musicians, painters etc. are self-taught or learn from a mentor or take private courses and I think for many writers this can work as well. If you want to study creative writing at university, that’s fine and it might be great for you,but I definitely don’t think it’s a necessity. In fact, David Foster Wallace (himself a creative writing teacher) once pointed out that some MFA programs churn out students whose writing is impossibly pristine, complex, and elegant, while also being utterly indistinguishable and thoroughly forgettable. 

In the last five years, what have you become better at saying no to (distractions, invitations, etc.)? 

I’m still not great at saying no, in general. I think being a curious person is an important quality for a writer, or any human. However, I have gotten better at saying, “I’m really interested, but maybe give me a month to wrap up this other project I’m working on,” and that’s been a really helpful improvement. Doesn’t always work out though. The other week I went straight from a conference in Melbourne to the launch party for Six Cold Feet season 2 on a Thursday, then the theatre premiere of a dance show I wrote some poetry for the following night. I am now actually dead from exhaustion and it is my ghost writing this.

What marketing tactics should authors avoid?

Branding should apply to two things; products and cattle, but apparently people can now have ‘personal brands’ and corporations can have the same legal rights as a person. You’re a writer, you’re telling stories, not making bespoke booties for chihuahuas. Make art, not book-shaped pre-landfill.

What new realizations and/or approaches have helped you achieve your goals? 

I try and have at least two projects going at any one time, I work intensively on one and then when I start to get bored and/or overwhelmed, I flick straight to the other. The grass always looks greener on the other side, and this way I’m jumping from one patch of very green grass to another. Instead of moving between writing and procrastination, I move between two types of writing.

When you feel overwhelmed or have lost your focus temporarily, what do you do? 

There’s a little reservoir up in the mountains about fifteen minutes drive from my house. I like to go out there and stare at the water until one of our famously bloodthirsty Australian birds attempts to swoop me and peck out my eyeballs. The transition from serenity to extreme adrenaline is very stimulating.

Any other tips?

Be part of your community. Writing can be a very hermetic practice, which is fine at times, but it’s important to go to people’s readings, buy their books, write reviews, share recommendations, and just be nice to people. notes: While people had been seeing unusual objects in the sky for millenia, a ‘golden age’ of ufos and flying saucers really kicked off right after WW2 with the beginning of the Cold War. 1947 was a banner year that encompassed the famous Roswell New Mexico incident, where a UFO was reported to have crashed and debris recovered by the military, to the the UFO sighting by private pilot Kenneth Arnold over Washington state that gave birth to the term “flying saucers”. The launch of Sputnik 1 and the beginning of the Space Race in 1957 added new fuel to the fire as a myriad of invasion fears and conspiracy theories involving Russians, atomic warfare, and yes, little green men got conflated into a rich paranoid cultural stew. Starting in 1952, Project Blue Book, run by the Air Force, lent an air of scientific legitimacy to the rash of sightings throughout the 50s and 60s and both quelled and encouraged global concern with flying saucers. While gathering a massive amount of data and eyewitness reports, the project ended in 1969 with an inconclusive verdict.

Pop culture did not ignore the public interest in this subject and stacks of films, books and records addressed the phenomenon with a plethora of saucers, martians, and bug eyed monsters menacing the screens and airwaves.

One product of the Cold War Flying Saucer craze was the “break in” record first popularized by New York DJs, Dickie Goodman and Bill Buchanan in 1956 with their song “The Flying Saucer parts 1 & 2”. The song is considered to be an early - and perhaps the earliest - example of sampling and mashup, featuring segments of popular songs intertwined with spoken "news" commentary to tell the story of a visit from a flying saucer. This novelty record format was copied and parodied for years by many artists and lasted well into the 1980s with topical break-in send-ups of current events such as the 70s energy crisis, Watergate, Jaws, Star Wars and, in Dickie Goodman’s last recording before his death by suicide in 1989, safe sex. In 2000 Goodman’s son Jon released an exhaustive bio of his father and a chronicle of the break-in craze in his book: The King of Novelty.

ZyCoV-D, a needle-free three-dose COVID-19 vaccine developed by Indian pharmaceutical firm Zydus Cadila received an emergency use license in India on Friday, after a government panel recommended the same to India's central drug authority.

The Ahmedabad-based pharma major had on 1 July applied for emergency use authorisation (EUA) with the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) for the vaccine. The company said it has conducted the largest clinical trial for the vaccine in India in over 50 centres so far.

Why is this relevant?

ZyCoV-D is the world's first DNA vaccine against the novel coronavirus infection, developed by an Indian company and become the sixth vaccine that has been approved for use in the country after Serum Institute's Covishield, Bharat Biotech's Covaxin, Russia's Sputnik V and the US-made Moderna and Johnson and Johnson.

It is also the first vaccine candidate in India that has been found safe for use in children above the age of 12. Countries like US, France and Germany are already at various stages of providing vaccines for minors. In India, apart from ZyCoV-D, Bharat biotech's Covaxin is also under trial for use among the 2 to 18-year-old population.

Zydus Cadila, that already has anti-COVID treatments available in the market claimed to have conducted the largest clinical trial in India so far at over 50 centers and the participants included people between age group 12 and 18 years. The Covaxin trial includes 525 minor volunteers.

How is it different from other vaccines?

 ZyCoV-D is a three-dose vaccine, unlike Bharat Biotech's Covaxin and Serum Institute of India-manufactured Covishield jabs.

However, the company said it has also evaluated a two-dose regimen for ZyCoV-D vaccine using a 3-milligram dose per visit and the immunogenicity results had been found to be equivalent to the current three-dose regimen.

This will further help in reducing the full course duration of vaccination while maintaining the high safety profile of the vaccine in the future, the company added.

ZyCoV-D is touted to be a 'needle-free' vaccine.

It is an intradermal vaccine, which is applied using The PharmaJet needle-free system.  Needle-free injectors deliver the vaccine using a narrow stream of fluid to penetrate the skin and deliver the vaccine to the proper tissue depth. The company says this methodology can eliminate chances of needlestick injury and will also lead to a significant reduction in any kind of side effects. It will also help people suffering from trypanophobia, a common condition marked by an irrational fear of blood or needles. It's estimated that fear of needles affects up to 25 percent of adults.

ZyCoV-D is not very sensitive to temperature, unlike its competitors. The prescribed storage temperature is between 2 to 8 degrees centigrade but has shown good stability at temperatures of 25 degrees centigrade as well for at least three months.

The thermostability of the vaccine will help in easy transportation and storage of the vaccine and reduce any cold chain breakdown challenges leading to vaccine wastage.

The plasmid DNA platform provides ease of manufacturing with minimal biosafety requirements.

It can be manufactured at a BSL-1 grade lab which brings down the cost of production and ensures that the cost of expanding production units. In comparison, Covaxin needs a Bio-Safety Level 3 lab to manufacture the jab.

The science behind the jab: How does it work?

ZyCoV-D is a plasmid DNA vaccine which when injected produces the spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and elicits an immune response mediated by the cellular and humoral arms of the human immune system, which play a vital role in protection from disease as well as viral clearance.

In simpler words, it means that the vaccine is manufactured by creating a close enough copy of the virus' DNA sequence so that no harm or disease is caused, but the immune system response is triggered when the body encounters the real virus the next time.

Interim efficacy results

The vaccine has shown a primary efficacy of 66.6 percent for symptomatic RT-PCR positive cases in the interim analysis. Whereas, no moderate case of COVID-19 disease was observed in the vaccine beneficiaries post administration of the third dose suggesting 100% efficacy for moderate disease.

No severe cases or deaths due to COVID-19 occurred in the vaccine recipients after administration of the second dose of the vaccine.

However, its phase three trial data is not yet peer-reviewed.

The vaccine manufacturers also claimed that the vaccine's efficacy data were collected through India's largest clinical trial for a coronavirus vaccine so far. A study carried out in more than 50 clinical sites spread across the country and during the peak of the second wave of COVID-19 reaffirming the vaccine's efficacy against the new mutant strains especially the delta variant, Cadila Healthcare managing director Dr Patel said.

He also emphasised that the plasmid DNA platform is ideally suited for dealing with COVID-19 as it can be easily adapted to deal with mutations in the virus. Moreover, the DNA vaccines offer a number of potential advantages over traditional approaches that include stimulation of both B and T cell responses, improving the vaccine stability, says WHO.

Availability and pricing

The company said that it can be ready for rollout within 45 to 60 days of getting approval. The company plans to manufacture 10 to 12 crore doses annually in the early stages. However, the company did not give any hint on the expected price of the vaccine jab. It clarified that the price of the vaccine will be charged separately and the needle-free applicator will come at a separate cost. The company has, however, not yet decided if it will roll out the final product by clubbing the prices of the jab and the applicator.

"It is too early to comment on the pricing. That discussion is yet to happen. We will announce the price before the commercial launch of ZyCoV-D," Patel told a press conference. He said that so far up to Rs 500 crore has been invested in the development of the Zydus vaccine.
