What it meant to "do geology" in Hutton's time was to apply lessons of textual hermeneutics usually reserved for scripture [...] to the landscape. Geology was itself textual. Rocks were marks made by invisible processes that could be deciphered. Doing geology was a kind of reading, then, which existed in a dialectical relationship with writing. In The Theory of the Earth from 1788, Hutton wrote a new history of the earth as a [...] system [...]. Only a few kilometers away from Hutton’s unconformity [the geological site at Isle of Arran in Scotland that inspired his writing], [...] stands the remains of the Shell bitumen refinery [closed since 1986] as it sinks into the Atlantic Ocean. [...] As Hutton thought, being in a place is a hermeneutic practice. [...] [T]he Shell refinery at Ardrossan is a ruin of that machine, one whose great material derangements have defined the world since Hutton. [...]
The Shell Transport and Trading Company [now the well-known global oil company] was created in the Netherlands East Indies in 1897. The company’s first oil wells and refineries were in east Borneo [...]. The oil was taken by puncturing wells into subterranean deposits of a Bornean or Sumatran landscape, and then transported into an ever-expanding global network of oil depots at ports [...] at Singapore, then Chennai, and through the Suez Canal and into the Mediterranean. [...] The oil in these networks were Bornean and Sumatran landscapes on the move. Combustion engines burnt those landscapes. Machinery was lubricated by them. They illuminated the night as candlelight. [...] The Dutch East Indies was the new land of untapped promise in that multi-polar world of capitalist competition. British and Dutch colonial prospectors scoured the forests, rivers, and coasts of Borneo [...]. Marcus Samuel, the British founder of the Shell Transport and Trading Company, as his biographer [...] put it, was “mesmerized by oil, and by the vision of commanding oil all along the line from production to distribution, from the bowels of the earth to the laps of the Orient.” [...]
---
Shell emerged from a Victorian era fascination with shells.
In the 1830s, Marcus Samuel Sr. created a seashell import business in Houndsditch, London. The shells were used for decorating the covers of curio boxes. Sometimes, the boxes also contained miniature sculptures, also made from shells, of food and foliage, hybridizing oceanic and terrestrial life forms. Wealthy shell enthusiasts would sometimes apply shells to grottos attached to their houses. As British merchant vessels expanded into east Asia after the dissolution of the East India Company’s monopoly on trade in 1833, and the establishment of ports at Singapore and Hong Kong in 1824 and 1842, the import of exotic shells expanded.
Seashells from east Asia represented the oceanic expanse of British imperialism and a way to bring distant places near, not only the horizontal networks of the empire but also its oceanic depths.
---
The fashion for shells was also about telling new histories. The presence of shells, the pecten, or scallop, was a familiar bivalve icon in cultures on the northern edge of the Mediterranean. Aphrodite, for example, was said to have emerged from a scallop shell. Minerva was associated with scallops. Niches in public buildings and fountains in the Roman empire often contained scallop motifs. St. James, the patron saint of Spain, was represented by a scallop shell [...]. The pecten motif circulated throughout medieval European coats of arms, even in Britain. In 1898, when the Gallery of Palaeontology, Comparative Anatomy, and Anthropology was opened in Paris’s Museum of Natural History - only two years after the first test well was drilled in Borneo at the Black Spot - the building’s architect, Ferdinand Dutert, ornamented the entrance with pecten shell reliefs. In effect, Dutert designed the building so that one entered through scallop shells and into the galleries where George Cuvier’s vision of the evolution of life forms was displayed [...]. But it was also a symbol for the transition between an aquatic form of life and terrestrial animals. Perhaps it is apposite that the scallop is structured by a hinge which allows its two valves to rotate. [...] Pectens also thrive in the between space of shallow coastal waters that connects land with the depths of the ocean. [...] They flourish in architectural imagery, in the mind, and as the logo of one of the largest ever fossil fuel companies. [...]
---
In the 1890s, Marcus Samuel Jr. transitioned from his father’s business selling imported seashells to petroleum.
When he adopted the name Shell Transport and Trading Company in 1897, Samuel would likely have known that the natural history of bivalves was entwined with the natural history of fossil fuels. Bivalves underwent an impressive period of diversification in the Carboniferous period, a period that was first named by William Conybeare and William Phillips in 1822 to identify coal bearing strata. In other words, the same period in earth’s history that produced the Black Spot that Samuel’s engineers were seeking to extract from Dayak land was also the period that produced the pecten shells that he named his company after. Even the black fossilized leaves that miners regularly encountered in coal seams sometimes contained fossilized bivalve shells.
The Shell logo was a materialized cosmology, or [...] a cosmogram.
Cosmograms are objects that attempt to represent the order of the cosmos; they are snapshots of what is. The pecten’s effectiveness as a cosmogram was its pivot, to hinge, between spaces and times: it brought the deep history of the earth into the present; the Black Spot with Mediterranean imaginaries of the bivalve; the subterranean space of liquid oil with the surface. The history of the earth was made legible as an energetic, even a pyrotechnical force. The pecten represented fire, illumination, and certainly, power. [...] If coal required tunnelling, smashing, and breaking the ground, petroleum was piped liquid that streamed through a drilled hole. [...] In 1899, Samuel presented a paper to the Society of Arts in which he outlined his vision of “liquid fuel.” [...] Ardrossan is a ruin of that fantasy of a free flowing fossil fuel world. [...] At Ardrossan, that liquid cosmology is disintegrating.

Roof Insulation: Protecting Buildings and a Smart Investment for the Future Roofs are among the most exposed parts of buildings to environmental and climatic factors such as sun, rain, humidity, and wind, making them susceptible to damage and corrosion over time. Therefore, what is known as "roof insulation" has emerged as an effective solution aimed at protecting buildings and improving their thermal and structural efficiency.
In this article, we discuss in detail the importance of roof insulation, its types, the different methods of implementation, and the materials used in the insulation process.
First: What is roof insulation? Roof insulation is the process of covering the upper part of a building with specific layers aimed at reducing the effects of external factors such as heat, water, or both. Insulation is divided into two main types:
Thermal insulation: to reduce heat transfer from the roof to the interior of the building and vice versa.
Waterproofing: to prevent water and moisture from seeping into the building.
In some cases, double insulation, combining both types, is used for complete protection.
Second: The Importance of Roof Insulation Protecting the building's structural structure from damage resulting from water or moisture leakage.
Reducing energy consumption by improving the efficiency of air conditioning and heating.
Increasing the building's lifespan and reducing maintenance costs.
Preventing mold and bacteria from forming inside walls and ceilings.
Achieving thermal comfort for building occupants in both summer and winter.
Third: Types of Insulation
Waterproofing This aims to protect surfaces from water seepage resulting from rain or surface cleaning. It is used on concrete surfaces, tanks, or bathrooms.
Waterproofing Materials:
Bitumen (black liquid or panels)
Insulating panels (such as PVC panels)
Epoxy Insulation
Liquid polymer materials applied directly to the surface.
Thermal Insulation This is used to reduce heat transfer into the building, thus reducing reliance on air conditioning.
Thermal Insulation Materials:
Polyurethane
Foam
Rock or glass wool
Polystyrene (cork) panels
Sound Insulation (less common for roofs) This is used in some buildings, such as studios or offices, and reduces noise transmission through the roof.
Fourth: Insulation Implementation Methods
Spray Foam Insulation Insulation (usually foam) is sprayed onto the building's surface using a special machine. It completely covers all openings and gaps.
Panel Insulation Insulation panels are placed on the building's surface and secured securely, then covered with a layer of cement or ceramic.
Liquid Waterproofing Liquid materials are used in this method, which are brushed or roller-applied onto the surface and turn into a solid, waterproof layer when dry.
Fifth: Factors for Choosing the Appropriate Insulation Type Surface type (concrete, metal, wood).
Climate of the region (rainy, hot, humid).
Available budget.
Purpose of insulation (water-only, thermal-only, or dual).
Sixth: Steps for Professional Roof Insulation Clean the surface thoroughly of dust and impurities.
Repair any cracks or fissures that may exist.
Apply a primer layer (in some cases).
Apply the main insulation layer according to the selected material.
Test the insulation to ensure there are no leaks or poor performance.
Cover the insulation with a protective layer in some cases (such as tiles or ceramics).
Seventh: Roof Insulation in Arab Countries Given the nature of the climate in Arab countries, thermal insulation is extremely important for reducing indoor temperatures, especially in the Gulf. In rainy areas such as Lebanon or northern Egypt, waterproofing is especially important to avoid leakage problems.
Eighth: Roof Insulation Cost The cost of insulation varies depending on:
Type of material used
Roof area
Implementation method (manual or automatic)
Requirement for single or double waterproofing
In general, investing in insulation is considered economically viable in the long term, as it saves maintenance and energy costs.
Conclusion Roof insulation is no longer a luxury; it is a basic necessity to ensure the safety of buildings and the comfort of their occupants. With the development of insulation technologies and the proliferation of options, it has become possible to implement effective and economical solutions for any type of roof, whether residential, commercial, or industrial.
Paying attention to roof insulation means building smart, sustainable, and economical… from the ground up!

Having spent some hours contemplating the world, considering my choices, and also sleeping, I have some tentative thoughts.
1. Did I stir the soap and hydrosol before I covered the pan? I'm not sure I did. Have I done so previously? At least once, I think. Why would not doing so have caused the blob to form? No fucking clue, but it sure would be fascinating to see if I can make it do it again.
2. Would temperature/humidity affect a soap and hydrosol mix? The new workshop space has, for the last several days, been very hot and very humid. The first time I made neroly washballs, I was in the old workshop; the second time in the new, but earlier in the year when the temperatures weren't so dire and *checks notes* there wasn't a hurricane coming up the coast. Did... did the mix get cooked, somehow? Did I accidentally start a rebatch? And (depending on how this version turns out, tbh) could I replicate the effect with my oven, a pan of water, and another well-timed meteorological event? Igor fetch the weather machine--
3. What happens if I add salt to this? To be honest, I had largely intended this version to be the test where instead of salt (v.1) or orrisroot and then also salt when orrisroot didn't work (v.2), I threw in an ingredient that isn't listed but is, I think, an unintended additive based on how labdanum used to be prepared: almond meal.
Tangent time!
Labdanum, the Sticky Boi
Labdanum, as you may recall, is a brown sticky resin made originally by collecting the goo accumulated on goats and sheep that had been grazing on various Cistus family plantlife.
It smells amazing and it's referenced most often, in 1600s-1700s apothecary and household manuals, as something you add in powdered form to various recipes, incenses, and medicaments.
Since I am sometimes a reasonable person of the modern age -- or I was, anyway, during this part of my funky alchemist journey of self-discovery -- I first searched for powdered labdanum available for purchase.
There was none. The essential oil, sure, lots of places. The absolutes, yes, from very serious perfumery sources and for significantly more money. I could even get the resin itself, unmodified, through small independent sellers.
But powdered? Zilch.
Fine, thought I. Fine. Maybe we've moved beyond its use as a powder. Maybe other things are cheaper, more sustainable, more easily worked now. These things happen. Let us never forget the tragedy of Heinrik and the powdering pearls experiment gah
But I wanted to at least try to use the ingredient as it was listed in the original recipe. So I went looking around modern sources for directions on how to powder it myself.
Which is how I found out that, according to modern sources, you can't.
At the time, I recall deciding that this must have meant that there was, once again, some kind of shorthand or missing step or assumed understanding in my manuals that I, as a person 300 years in the future, just didn't have the context for. In lieu of historical accuracy, I sighed sadly and settled for buying the essential oil (which, to be fair, is still brown and sticky, so there was that small comfort).
Some months passed, and then: I discovered my best apothecary bae, Moyse Charas, and his book The Royal Pharmacopœea.
I love this book. It's got recipes; it's got definitions; and it's got, thank all the gods and pretty little fishes, DIY instructions--
Including, to my awed delight, an entire chapter on how to grind anything to a powder.
And so when it comes to labdanum...
Nevertheless upon some occasions, and for some Substances, there must be recourse to Addition. As for Example; If you were to pound the Roots of Birth-wort, Gentian, or any such-like herbs that are of a clammy Substance, though they seem to be well dry'd, they will stick to the Morter and the Pestle, unless you mix them with Almonds[....] They help also to reduce into powder Ambergreese, all Bitumens, and all rosiny Juices dry'd, as Scammony, Benjamin, Balsom, and the like.
Almonds.
Which brings us back to
The Wash-balls of Neroly (Again)
I've been following Simon Barbe's recipe and instructions, though reduced to testing (rather than "let's supply the whole neighborhood") amounts:
dried soap
orange-blossom water
labdanum
neroli
But doing so has led, the previous two times I've made these, to a particular "devil's marshmallow"-like concoction that has led to late night panic posts and, eventually, adding salt to the fuckers to actually make the mixes solidify. This, I have long felt, is not what Barbe intended, as he's surprisingly good at providing instructions, and I'm sure he would've mentioned if salt needed to be added at any point.
So version 3.0 of this recipe was supposed to be the test where I added -- as would have been present in the original powdered labdanum -- almond meal.
...but now, I am confronted with this new variable. This new, enjellified variable of uncertain origin.
Which after, again, much thought and some sleep, means there is but one last question.
4. What would happen if I split this batch in two and added salt to one and almond meal to the other?
Still in the workshop because I'm doing ALL THE THINGS apparently, so time for
The Wash-Balls of Neroly
Version 3.0
Step 1: Fill wee pan with dried Nablus soap
Tumblr media
Step 2: Glug glug the orange-blossom water yum
Tumblr media
Step 3: Fill to top hooray!
Tumblr media
Step 4: Put on a little hat and soak up, pretty bb
Tumblr media
(but do not associate with the lavender washballs beside you, they are up to no good)
I shall come back and stir you daily, little soap goo, until you are ready for THE NEW VARIATION that maybe won't make me fucking salt you all to hell. Again.
Sleep tight, little fucko. *kiss kiss*

Burdens, Doublefold - cowritten with @quickreaver, art by ileliberte What if Dean left Sam at Stanford after the fire, hoping it would keep his little brother safe and make things better? Somehow, 'better' never seems to be in the Winchester Family cards. Sam gets tangled up with his ex-roommate Brady, tracking psychics, but dealing with demons is never honest business. Dean carries on until his father is put in grave danger. He is left on his own to deal, stumbling into Harvelle's Roadhouse for help, where Dean gets just a little more than he bargained for. Eventually, the brothers’ paths twist and turn their way back to each other, but the results could mean the End of Days. (67k, gen, AU of seasons 1-2)
Before the One You Serve When Dean comes to get Sam at Stanford, he finds him living with Brady. And Dean doesn't trust Brady, even though he can't quite put his finger on why. Not at first. (5k, Sam/Brady)

John Winchester is Dead They say those Winchester boys're crazy. Drive around in a big black beast and drink too much and laugh about mean things. They say their daddy's worse, but you never see him. He's just a voice on the other end of the phone or a darker shape in the back seat of their dark car. They say John Winchester died two years ago. (2k, gen, horror)
Breathing, Talking, Dead Man Walking   -  John Doe, male, approximately thirty-seven years old. Subject was found by EMTs in close proximity to the site of a sizable explosion in Lebanon, Kansas. (2k, gen, Sam & Dean)
Tumblr media
Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea - featuring art by @quickreaver When Sam opened Lucifer’s Cage, the only thing he found inside was Lucifer’s grace – his grace. With the return of his grace, Sam remembered his past – his war against the Host, his Fall, and his plans to bring about the End. The thing is…he doesn’t want the Apocalypse anymore. He likes things the way they are, and tries everything to keep his identity a secret- especially from Dean. Of course, the four Horsemen, Hell and Heaven have other ideas. (13K, gen)

They have a cabin, in the middle of nowhere, that keeps them off the radar; they find comfort in each other. But they can’t stay off the chessboard forever, especially not when Lucifer, wearing Hannibal Lecter as a vessel, is tearing the world apart around them. (33k, Sam Winchester/Will Graham)
Tumblr media
Impala's Run - cowritten with @quickreaver, art by adrenalineshots Sam and Dean Singer (aka Winchester) aren’t your average young Kansas farmers. Their home is very, very far from Kansas, in fact. Many light-years worth of ‘far’. The boys may look human, but certain talents set them apart: Dean speaks the language of machines, and Sam can heal through manipulating energy. Hidden on Earth by their father, their agricultural lifestyle gets rocked when warring alien races discover where they’ve landed, and Sam and Dean are forced to make the run of their lives. (23k, gen)
Tumblr media
All Our Wrath and Cutting Beauty - art by @quickreaver - Sam killed Alistair, but not before Alistair reminded Dean of who and what he’d become in Hell. Dean knows Sam can take down Lilith, and he’ll make damn sure Sam gets strong enough to do just that. They’ll stop the Apocalypse – together, no matter how many bodies stack up, or how much blood is spilt.(11k, horror)
Tumblr media
Diary of a Madman -Lydia’s newest patient, Sam Winchester, suffered from hallucinations, delusions, and regular bouts of insomnia. He also thought he was Lucifer. (4k, gen, horror)

AI learns to estimate oil viscosity
Tumblr media
- By Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) -
A group of Skoltech scientists in Moscow, Russia developed machine learning (ML) algorithms that can teach artificial intelligence (AI) to determine oil viscosity based on nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data. The new method can come in handy for the petroleum industry and other sectors which have to rely on indirect measurements to characterize a substance.
The research was published in the Energy and Fuels journal.
An important parameter of oil and petrochemicals, viscosity has implications for production and processing, while helping to better understand and model the natural processes in the reservoir. Standard oil viscosity assessment and monitoring techniques are very time and money consuming and sometimes technically unfeasible. NMR can help determine the properties thanks to a material’s ability to absorb and emit electromagnetic energy. Oil is a chemically heterogeneous mixture of hydrocarbons, which makes the interpretation of NMR results extremely difficult.
A group of scientists from Skoltech, the University of Calgary (Canada) and Curtin University (Australia) processed NMR data using ML algorithms. Their model trained on NMR data on various types of oil from fields in Canada and the Unites States produced an accurate prediction of viscosity which was confirmed by lab tests.
According to Dmitry Koroteev, a professor at the Skoltech Center for Hydrocarbon Recovery (CHR) and one of the study leads, their research illustrates how ML algorithms can help characterize materials’ properties measured indirectly and, more specifically, by using NMR measurements instead of viscosimetry at the lab. In practical terms, this means that one can obtain information about oil in the subsurface reservoir without extracting samples and taking them to the lab for tests. “Surprisingly, ML works better here than the traditional correlations,” comments Professor Koroteev. “The direct and indirect experimental measurements that we had at our disposal were a good training set for our ML algorithms. The tests demonstrated that the algorithms have good generalization ability and do not require retraining.”
“What is especially interesting is the high accuracy ML models achieve on extra-heavy oil and bitumen samples. Due to their complex chemical composition, the relationship between NMR relaxation and viscosity is not well defined for this oil types. For the empirical models, the workaround for this is to make additional measurements to determine the relative hydrogen index (RHI) of the oil – the information which is often not readily available or difficult to measure in the field accurately. Our study shows that by using ML derived NMR viscosity models, these measurements are not necessary. “– explains Skoltech-Curtin Ph.D. student, Strahinja Markovic, the first author of the paper.
The scientists are positive that their method can find use beyond the petroleum industry. It is not infrequent that the test sample is unavailable for direct tests, which makes indirect measurements a lucky alternative for a variety of sectors, such as the food industry where the quality of fruit could be tested without even cutting them open, or in agriculture where soil quality assessment could cover much larger areas.
