Rebels Rewatch: "Legacy of Mandalore"
A Mandalorian family reunion!
Live reaction version from 2017.
I do find it hilarious that the kids are in the front seats, driving and co-piloting, while the adults are hanging out in the back.
Ezra's little, "Wait a minute." moment lol.
Nice to hear this bit of spoken Mando'a.
Chopper banging on the outside of the Phantom II with his manipulators lol.
Remember what I said last rewatch about how the two of them develop into co-protagonists? Part of that seems to be that they start spending more time in the cockpit together. :)

~Under cloud, beneath the stars... over snoooooooow one winter's morn.~
*ahem* Pardon me there, visiting Krownest always puts those lyrics in my head.
Subtle animation appreciation moment: The snow clumps being shaken off the tops of the trees as they're passing.

"Don't worry, I'll play nice."
Ah yes, one of the parts of the episode that almost seems like it's playing Ezra off as Sabine's "problem boyfriend" that she's bringing home to meet mom and dad. <3
So it was definitely the Supercommando armor that set Ezra off.
I do not know what it is but Disney has been pulling some really weird shit regarding age order of siblings lately, Tristan does not look like he's the younger sibling at all.
Also Isabella and Luisa should be totally switched around, c'mon.
Subtle animation appreciation moment: How their feet actually sink into the snow with realistic weight and powder compression.

Love the design of the Wren stronghold. Very Modern Architecture.

I love him. <3
Takes Sabine promising that the lightsabers will be safe before Ezra decides to give his up. (And yet later in the climax he doesn't even hesitate to throw it to her, aaaaaah!)

Don't mind me, just appreciating the design of this place.
Ursa sounds an awful lot like Fenn "I made a deal with the Empire to survive" Rau here. I doubt the parallels aren't deliberate.
So I guess the takeaway lesson is don't make deals with the evil empire because it will always screw you over.

*whispers* If no supposed to ship why have Ezra being adorkable towards Sabine's brother just like Kanan was adorkable at Hera's father?

Really can't get over the scenery in this episode it's so soft and pretty.
Ursa was so ready to be impressed that her babygirl kicked Maul's ass and so disappointed when that wasn't the case lol.
Does seem like Sabine had a difficult childhood even before the whole Dutchess fiasco. Maybe that was why she decided to go to the Imperial Academy in the first place? Who knows.
My genre-savvy called a lot of the beats this episode, which made it just a smidge predictable for me the first time around.
Not gonna lie, Rau sneaking through the complex is actually kind of hilarious.

I'll bet Alrich painted that for her. :)
Ngl, the dialogue in this scene is just a bit weirdly written, I dunno what it is but it bugs me.
Ezra's so proud that Sabine kicked Gar Saxon's ass lol.

Underappreciated Papa Wolf Kanan moment: Shielding Ezra from the guardsman's blasters.
You know I don't wonder why Sabine latched onto the Ghost crew as her new family, high-ranking Mandalorian clans seem overly obsessed with prestige.
Tristan is a blabbermouth lol, still can't get over that.

Oh man this expression. She must feel like she's relieving her family's disowning all over again.
*chanting* Don't make deals with the devil, don't make deals with the devil.
Saxon is a master at finding loopholes isn't he?
I don't think this brief fakeout from Tristan was necessary, I think he should have just immediately turned guns on Saxon from the beginning.
Nice to hear Sabine's theme in the score tho.
LOLOL IT STILL CRACKS ME UP HOW FENN RAU JUST BURSTS THROUGH THE GLASS WINDOW ALL, "SURPRISE, BITCHES!"

<333333
This moment made the episode for me.
Zero hesitation, complete trust and faith. He loves her so much omg.
Oooooh a nice rendition of the Force Theme here!

(Told y'all it became a running gag.)

Problem boyfriend so worried. <3
Sabine's theme is in french horns now, it sounds like. This iteration of the theme is less mournful and more action-oriented, with flute trills and timpani percussion.
The cracking ice is mostly symbolic I think. I did worry at the time of airing if someone was going to wind up falling in.
Sabine using basic lightsaber positions like Kanan and Ezra taught her. <3
...Was it implied that Sabine hacked off Saxon's arm there or...? Camera angle makes it difficult to discern.
I don't think it's a coincidence that Saxon winds up in a position like Dooku's or the Grand Inquisitor's in the Season One finale, lightsaber blades held crossed at their throats.
But Sabine, having been heavily influenced by the Jedi in her life, chooses mercy over revenge. The moment is even punctuated by a snippet of the Force Theme. Aaaaaaaah I love it, I love that Sabine has let Kanan's influence soak into her so much, has become so much more Jedi than Mandalorian and been made better for it.
Oh, his arm's intact, okay then.
I have... Thoughts⢠about the entire Mandalorian mindset of needing chaos to become strong and refusing outside help to fight its battles and how the whole Proud Warrior Race thing so often works against them rather than for them but I'll leave them unsaid for now.

<33333
This status quo change was honestly completely unexpected, and frankly, the episode is eons better for it.
Sabine's theme is in a triumphant key now, as she watches the Phantom II leave.

:((((
So! This episode is not nearly as good as the previous one, and it's bit predictable, as I said. It's not bad, though, and it's obviously a necessary one for Sabine's growth and character arc, and the overall Mandalorian arc. I was weirdly a little bored this time? Aside from the cute Sabezra bits and the fact that they were bold enough to change up the status quo by having Sabine stay on Krownest, I really feel like this could have been so much stronger as an episode.
Maybe if we axed one of the fillers and made this a two-parter? Idk.
The episode is still decently entertaining enough and has lots of lovely quality Sabine content for those in fandom whose primary investment is her. She gets to really shine here, and show off how far she's come as a character. Which is great.
I think at the time there was a genuine worry that Sabine was being written out of the show. I know I needed a little bit of time to process the thought of her being absent the next couple episodes. But again, they made a narrative choice and stuck with it and I admire that. So I really can't hate this episode. :)
Of course next time we're at my favorite episode of the season and the whole inspiration for an accidentally giant-ass AU that I wrote. See y'all then!

Inti Creates continue to be the Switchâs secret indie workhorse, and Iâm really happy about this release in particular because I wound up shying away from Dragon Marked For Death. For all of the issues they tend to have with their design philosophy, I really appreciate the work Inti Creates does.

As both oprainfallâs resident indie nerd and Nintendo fanboy, it fell upon me to cover the Indie Direct. I wasnât entirely sure what to expect, cause sometimes the cup runneth over for indie fans, and sometimes it doesnât. Thankfully, it veritably overflowed today, with nearly 20 games announced for a variety of genres. It was both old games coming to the Nintendo Switch, as well as entirely new and exclusive games. Thereâs a lot to cover, and a lot of reasons to be excited. So Iâll give a brief snippet of each title covered, in the order they were revealed, as well as release info. Buckle up, boys and girls.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
First up was an announcement that made me smile and groan at the same time. Creepy milk commercial aside, Cuphead is officially heading to the Nintendo Switch on April 18th. The reason Iâm groaning is cause I already bought this on Steam, but would much prefer it on Switch. So I guess Studio MDHR gets my money twice. You can pre-purchase the game as of today, though it officially launches on April 18th, bringing beautifully animated chaos to your system.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Next up is Overland, a squad focused, turn-based apocalyptic strategy game. It looks like it has elements of tactical RPGs and a bit of Oregon Trail ethos, where you canât save everyone. Since itâs set in such a dangerous climate, it shouldnât surprise you that the farther west you go, the weirder things get. This randomly generated adventure is heading to the Switch this Fall.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Iâm very happy that My Friend Pedro is finally heading to the Switch this June. Iâm even more surprised that they announced it was a console exclusive, since the last time I demoed it, I could have sworn it was also headed to PS4 and PC. Regardless, if you love frenetic, coordinated violence on a comical scale and talking bananas, youâll love this one.

I got to play Neo Cab at E3 last year, and Iâm glad to hear itâs coming out soon. This visually distinct game involves trying to reunite with your best friend in a future ruled by a dystopian megacorporation. Youâre the last human driver in city overrun by automation, and your job is to drive folks around while staying calm and unveiling the mysteries of the city. Neo Cab is out later this Summer.
When I heard this next game was about dog racing, I almost skipped it. But then I saw that The Red Lantern is narrative driven and has an interesting overall style. Developed by Timberline Studio, in the game youâll engage in the Iditarod, fight the wilderness, tend your dogs, mend wounds and hunt to survive. Fend off bear attacks and get to your destination alive. Oh and if you like gyro controls, The Red Lantern has those as well. This unique adventure is out later this year.

I donât normally think of top down when I think of survival horror, but Darkwood looks to be a strange and eerie adventure. In this title youâll craft weapons, explore hideouts and hunker down at night while praying for the sun as monsters hunt you. Darkwood is also procedurally generated, so every time will be different. If that sounds like your cup of tea, itâs out this May.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Personally, I adore the style of Katana Zero. It has lush pixelated charm and lots of action. You play as Dragon the assassin. Armed with precognition, you will manipulate time and leave no witnesses. One hit and youâre dead though, but thankfully the game rewinds levels when you lose. And on the random side of things, in between missions youâll talk with a therapist to get over your demons. Katana Zero is out April 18, though you can pre-purchase it today.
I admit I have yet to play any game published by Double Fine (though I do own a couple). But Iâve played many from Bandai Namco, and thatâs relevant since this next game is by both. RAD is a top down adventure game where your primary power is the skill to mutate into horrid beasts to fight other horrid beasts. Sounds like my sort of game, so perhaps this will be the first Double Fine title I end up playing. RAD is out later this Summer.

If you had told me earlier today a game with a mix of post apocalyptic mayhem and pinball was gonna intrigue me, I would have called you a filthy liar. Well, now I know better, as Creature in the Well seems to mix both effortlessly. It features 8 dungeons, top down action adventure, pinball ricochet mechanics and lots of crazy. A giant creature has trapped your town in a sandstorm, so you have to slay it with over 15 weapons, each with different quirks. This fascinating looking title is out later this Summer.
Iâm super excited that they announced that Bloodroots is out this Summer. Not only was this game a blast at PAX West, but itâs really a one of a kind action game. Everything in the environment is your weapon, which is good since one hit and youâre a gonner. Play as anti-hero Mr. Wolf on his mysterious quest for revenge. Canât wait til I get my hands on this.
Pine gave me all sorts of Redwall vibes. This open world, 3rd person action adventure game adapts to your choices and features lots of strange creatures. Explore miles of terrain and engage with 5 factions of anthropomorphic animal men, including Moose and Gator. Scavenge, barter, harvest and craft this August.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Vlambeer got a lot of love, showing off 2 ports and one entirely new title. Super Crate Box is one of the ports out today. It features fast paced, multiplayer matches, which are exclusive to this version. Nuclear Throne is also out today, offering post apocalyptic fun solo or with a buddy. Lastly, the new title is Vlambeer Arcade, which features a growing catalog of bite sized games, including Ultra Bugs first. Think Space Invaders, except you use enemy DNA to customize your ship. Vlambeer Arcade is out later this year.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
If you like 2D fun in the ocean, youâll love Swimsanity! It features 1-4 player bouts with humans or bots. This multiplayer underwater shooter has more than 150 challenges, 8 game modes and 5 worlds. Choose classic or motion control and enjoy matchmaking and in-game voice chat. Out later this Summer.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
When I think indie on Switch, I always think of Inti Creates. Today they announced the sequel to the wonderful Blaster Master Zero, Blaster Master Zero II. It features the Gaia-Sophia tank, a new blast counter mechanic, travelling across the galaxy to different planets and planetoids, new items and even a broad new cast of characters. Best of all, Blaster Master Zero II is out RIGHT NOW. Iâll wait while you go buy it.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
The strangest reveal today was Stranger Things 3: The Game. Not a lot of details were announced for this isometric adventure game, other than local co-op, puzzle solving, and 12 playable characters. What I can say definitively is it releases July 4th which is also the same day that the 3rd season hits Netflix. Count me excited.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
They saved the best for almost last. At first I thought it was just talking about new content for Crypt of the Necrodancer, but surprise! Itâs actually a brand new game in that universe called Cadence of Hyrule. Team up with Link and Zelda and fight off the hordes of Gannon and friends. This wonderfully exuberant looking game (which Iâm sure will be a console exclusive) is out Spring 2019.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
The last thing to cover today is that there will be a sale for other indies already on Switch later today. Whew, talk about a ton of new reasons to be excited. Thanks for joining oprainfall for your coverage and stay tuned for more info about these games in the near future!
Nintendoâs Indie Direct Recap, Including Cuphead and Cadence of Hyrule As both oprainfall's resident indie nerd and Nintendo fanboy, it fell upon me to cover the Indie Direct.

What Does Ahsoka Have Against Kanan?

All throughout the show Star Wars: Rebels it really seems like Ahsoka has some sort of beef with Kanan that heâs unaware of. She frames it like sheâs some sort of wise, all-knowing being who really knows whatâs best, but at the end of the day she really just seems to have it out for him.
Letâs look at the evidence:
Season 1, Episode 14 - Rebel Resolve
Ahsoka as Fulcrum tells Hera that Kanan knew the risks and not to rescue him.
Fulcrum: Kanan knew the risks, accepted them. I'm sorry, but you must focus on your next objective.
Hera: But, Fulcrum, Kanan is our objective. We can still find him.
Fulcrum: At what cost? You? Your unit? The overall mission? There's something else, Hera. The transmission Ezra was able to beam out has attracted attention, not just from civilians, but from the highest levels of the Empire.
Hera: It was Kanan's plan. I guess it worked.
Fulcrum: Your mission was to be unseen, unnoticed, and now -
Hera: Kanan wanted to inspire people. He wanted to give them hope.
Fulcrum: Well, he was successful. But if you are caught, if Ezra is caught, that hope will die. To protect your unit, to protect Ezra, you must stop your search for Kanan and go into hiding.
She was willing to let him be tortured and killed by the Empire, or even turned into an Inquisitor because of the bigger mission. A mission, by the way, that Kanan didnât sign up for or even know about.
Season 2, Episode 3-4 - The Lost Commanders and Relics of the Old Republic
Ahsoka sends Kanan to Seelos to talk to Rex without warning him that it was clones he was going to be talking too. She knew what he had gone through with Order 66 (especially in the context of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Season 7) but she sent him without warning anyway. If Rex hadnât been right there, and been so calm, it could have been a blood bath.
Rex: I haven't heard those digits in... Well, that's my birth number.
Ezra: Birth number?
Kanan: They're clones!
Ezra: Kanan, wait. Stop!
Wolffe: Jedi. They've come for revenge.
Zeb: Drop the blaster, old man.
Gregor: Don't try it, boyo! I'll gun you down.
Rex: Stand down, troopers. Now! That's an order, soldier.
Wolffe: But he's a Jedi. A Jedi!
Rex: I know. I know. But they weren't the ones that betrayed us. Remember? Wolffe, remember?
Ezra: Kanan, Ahsoka said to trust them.
Rex: Sorry about the, um, weapons malfunction. My friend here is just a little defensive. See, we haven't seen a Jedi since, uh. Well, it's been a while.
If Ezra had reacted slightly differently, or Rex been away for some reason, the whole thing might have ended in disaster all because Ahsoka didnât give Kanan any warning. Throughout the show Kanan is depicted as a reasonable guy. He is also someone who can be talked into just about anything and is more than able to put aside his own feelings in order to serve a greater purpose. Ahsoka could have easily told him who he was going to be finding, and even gone with him, but she insisted on springing a traumatic event on him with no forewarning and expected him to be okay. This was just plain cruel on her part.
Season 2, Episode 21-22 - Twilight of the Apprentice Part I and II
Ahsoka tells Kanan to trust Maul. Even before season 7 reset the context this wasnât very wise, Maul is clearly a dark side user and interested in driving a wedge between Kanan and Ezra, but Ahsoka allows it even after sheâs had many experiences fighting dark side users during the Clone Wars.
If you add in the recontextualization of Season 7 itâs even worse! Ahsoka knows Maul is a Sith and specifically fought him so that he couldnât continue wrecking havoc on the galaxy. She knows he isnât trustworthy and knows heâs dangerous for Ezra, but she convinces Kanan to trust him anyway.
Ezra [about Maul]: I say we stay with him.
Kanan: Yeah? Well I say we go, so that settles is.
Maul: Are you such cowards that youâd run from this chance to defeat your enemies? Who slaughter your friends?
Ezra: Kanan?
[Kanan looks at Ahsoka, she nods in agreement]
...
Ezra: I say we split up. Trust me.
Maul: Excellent. You will find another lift on the far side. We will meet again on the next terrace.
[Maul and Ezra go up on lift]
Ahsoka: Heâll be fine.
Kanan: Yeah? How do you know that?
Ahsoka: Because, you taught him.
Spoiler alert, it was not fine.
Maul ends up attacking Kanan and blinding him who only trusted the Sith because Ahsoka said too. If sheâd backed Kanan up and agreed that Maul was too dangerous and unpredictable to trust then Kanan wouldnât have been blinded and Ahsoka wouldnât have died.
Season 4, Episode 13 - The World Between Worlds
After Kanan dies and Ezra enters the World Between Worlds and is able to rescue Ahsoka from her death, she tells Ezra not to rescue Kanan from his.
Ezra: I can reach him.
Ahsoka: Ezra, Kanan gave his life so that you could live. If heâs taken out of this moment, you all die.
Ezra: You donât understand what youâre asking me to do.
Ahsoka: Yes, I do. You canât save your master and I canât save mine. Iâm asking you to let go.
She leaves him to die a pointless death and has zero interest in using her seemingly limitless Force powers to save Kanan. Ahsoka is one of the most powerful Jedi/Force users ever shown on screen, she goes against countless obstacles with little trouble and yet sheâs perfectly okay to let Kanan die a horrible death that she could definitely prevent because sheâd rather preach to Ezra about letting go (which feels particularly empty, by the way, since her master isnât actually dead). This is the same thing she said at the end of Season 1 to Hera: let Kanan die, he knew what he was doing.
Why is she like this? Why does she not care if Kanan lives or dies? Why is she so okay with throwing him away, ignoring his trauma, overriding his intuition and preventing others from rescuing him too? Why doesnât she seem to value him at all? What does Ahsoka Tano have against Kanan Jarrus?

Lightsaber forms: A nerd rant.
In the time of the prequel trilogy, the predominant Jedi lightsaber form has usually cited to be Form IV, Ataru. And while I get why that might be popular because of Grand Master Yodaâs textbook mastery of the form... He chose that form to accommodate for his physical limitations. Ataru is a massively impractical form for modern Jedi to specialize in. Not only is it an inherently aggressive form (an odd choice for an order of peace keepers), it is heavily reliant on Force-assisted acrobatics, and can therefore be countered by devices that prevent a Jedi from focusing enough to call upon the Force. Its capacity for blast deflection is also extremely lacking, since it was principally designed as an offensive combat form to fight other saber-wielders during the Great Hyperspace War. And until the Clone Wars, there were basically no lightsaber wielders outside the Jedi Order. It makes literally zero sense for the Jedi to specialize in these forms, particularly when Forms III and V exist.
Form III, Soresu, is a martial embodiment of Jedi pacifism, having essentially no attacking maneuvers - itâs entirely defensive. Form III masters have been said to enter a state of âmoving meditationâ, becoming the tranquil eyes within a storm of chaos. Jedi master Obi-Wan Kenobi was at one point in the EU recognized by Jedi Battlemaster Mace Windu as the greatest Soresu master in the Order at the time, and possibly ever. And we saw how that worked out for him during the Clone Wars. He was only outfenced by Count Dooku (a specialist in the saber-to-saber fencing style, Form II aka Makashi) when he was still a Knight, before attaining the aforementioned mastery. After that, he was only bested in saber combat after his age-related physical deterioration and lack of practice owing to decades spent on Tatooine meditating on the higher mysteries of the Force caused his skills to rust.
Form V, however, is possibly the most useful and practical mastery for a Jedi (except perhaps Form VI, Niman), because Form V is not one style, but two - Shien and Djem So. Djem So is easily the more famous of the two, because its notable masters are the posterchildren for the Skywalker Saga - Anakin (and Vader) and Luke Skywalker. It is essentially lightsaber judo, designed to parry enemy strikes and then immediately deliver a counterattack with the same momentum, and has an emphasis on heavy power attacks. Shien, on the other hand, is actually specifically designed for aimed blast deflection. And its most notable practitioner is Ahsoka Tano - her greatest feat with Shien being aboard the Venator-class Star Destroyer when Order 66 was declared, when she deflected a massive fusillade of blaster fire from the clones trying to kill her, all into the ceiling so she could use the hole created by the fire to escape. Shien practitioners are easily identified due to their (seemingly without cause) preference for reverse grips (meaning that Starkiller/Galen Marek in The Force Unleashed was also likely a Shien specialist). And in an era where 99.9999999999% of the enemies youâre going to face are using blasters instead of lightsabers... why would any Jedi, save a few niche cases, specialize in an aggressive lightsaber dueling style over aimed blast deflection?
Maybe it was the influence of a previous Rule of Two Sith Lord to weaken the Jedi. Maybe it was just Jedi arrogance. I think itâs just flat stupid.
End rant.

Scrapbook 2021 | Part II
For anyone thatâs new to this, this is how I keep track of all of the things I enjoy and/or create throughout the year. I have literally been doing this since I had a livejournal. I think the first one was 2011? Maybe? In which case, woohoo, ten years of scrapbooking!
Itâs a nice little snippet of my life and helps to organize my brain.
A reminder:
Normal font - Indifferent/Neutral Italicized font - Enjoyed bold font - Loved with an asterisk* - All time favorite (bracketed titles) - Re-watches/Re-reads strikethough - Disliked
Goals are: read 80 books (as of today, i am at 31 books, which sounds not great but goodreads assures me that itâs only 1 book behind schedule), finish five video games (at two at the moment... mostly because I keep dragging my feet on actually finishing P5R), write more than 20 fics (at... 6) or something larger than 20k (negative), and write either an original short story or start a novel (i have started plotting for the novel? does that count?)

GET EXCITE!
January 28th is my birthday, dubbed Meimiday several years ago by my friends (I think it was hojo who started it). For those years, I would spend all day watching streams from said friends playing games for my birthday entertainment. Nine years ago, however, when asked what Iâd like to see I kinda just went âWhy donât you just beat some games?â and so the festivities truly began. Most of us frequent the Backloggery, so itâs kinda easy to see why it has snowballed~

Preferred lightsaber forms
Just been thinking of my canon force class OCs and how their lightsaber forms start, change and adjust as time goes on. Still donât have a canon Inquisitor though so itâs just 3/4 here.
Ryscha starts out her class story being a heavy Makashi practitioner. She doesnât have Barsenâthor levels of force power so she compensates with precise and efficient blade-work. It serves her well but as time goes on and she meets more and more powerful Sith, she realizes that she has to adjust her fighting style.
As the Cold War progressed, she began to add in some acrobatic elements of Ataru and even some more power based bits of Djem So. These new elements helped her against opponents like Mandalorians who had things like jetpacks and Beskar which could often counter her Makashi footwork and light strikes. Powerful Sith like Praven could also physically overwhelm her precise Makashi balde-work but learning aspects of Djem So helped to fix that particular weakness.
Given the prevalence of blasters she is also adept at blast deflection but she is not a Soresu practitioner. She prefers to utilize the other Form V variant Shien in order to defend from blasters while always pressing the attack rather than waiting it out like most Soresu users.
In short, she is a Form II user at heart but supplements it with aspects of Form IV and Form V.
Amarra is a JarâKai user and started off focusing more on physical strength which made her a formidable Djem So duelist. She found that she could overwhelm most opponents defenses with her raw power but when that wasnât enough her second blade allowed her to also overwhelm an opponents mind and throw off their focus as they had to keep track of both of her blades rather than just one.
Her time as Barasâs enforcer made her realize that reliance on her own physical strength was foolish as age and wounds would eventually catch up with her. So she began to adopt the efficient blade-work of Makashi into her fighting style to keep from exhausting herself. She even experimented with Soresu as she began to encounter Sith and Jedi that focused more on force based attacks than lightsaber combat. The defensive and efficient nature of Soresu allowed her to block and counter both powerful lightsaber attacks and force attacks rather than just powering through them.
She never really practiced much Soresu or Shien to deflect blaster bolts and instead simply relied on her experience with precise and fast blade-work. While this certainly doesnât work for everyone it works just fine for her and to date no blaster has ever penetrated her defense.
So, while she is still a Form V practitioner she has shifted away from purely physical attacks and towards the more efficient blade-work and movements of Form II and Form III.
I just realized that I have zero cutscene pics of her with her saberstaff :(
Biraka never expected to be made Barsenâthor or that she would see so much combat so she initially studied Soresu, thinking that its more defensive philosophy was ideal for a Jedi. However, she wanted nothing more than to study the force so began to neglect her martial skills. Not to say that her sabersatff skills were bad they were just adequate. It was only when she began having to fight masters that had fallen to the Dark Plague that she realized she had to improve her saber skills.
She started to regularly practice Soresu, relying on the constant motion of her saberstaff to protect her and gain physical momentum for strikes. Her abilities improved dramatically with consistent practice but eventually she realized that with the scale of the war she could not always rely on delaying tactics to try and reach or reason with someone. So she decided to take the constant efficient motions of Soresu and add an acrobatic Ataru flair to them.
The addition of the acrobatic Ataru strikes filled in the gap that her reliance on Soresu had created. Now having the ability to attack and not merely delay, her skills as a duelist improved even further. But despite her ability with the saberstaff she still much preferred to talk and did her best to only drew her blade when all other avenues had failed.
In an ideal galacxy, she would be a purely Form III practitioner but in practice she relies on Form III with added aspects of Form IV.

The Best Games of 2020
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
Despite how almost every other aspect of the year went, 2020 was a landmark year for video games. Not only did it see the release of highly-anticipated titles like The Last of Us Part II, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Ghost of Tsushima, and Cyberpunk 2077, but 2020 also marked the beginning of a new generation of console and PC gaming with the release of the Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and new GPUs from NVIDIA and AMD. We even got a new Half-Life game this year!
What wouldâve made the gaming year ever better? Big-name video game companies could have done more to eliminate development crunch and be more transparent about their business practices with customers and the press. And we definitely could have all been nicer to each other.
But video games also helped keep us connected when we couldnât see our friends and loved ones in person. They helped us travel to new and interesting places when we couldnât leave our homes. Most importantly, all 20 games on our best-of-the-year list made us feel excited about this medium at a time when it was so difficult to enjoy anything else.
To that affect, Den of Geek is celebrating 20 video games our contributors and critics, as well as our community of readers, voted as the very best of 2020.
20. Star Wars: Squadrons
For the last decade or so, most Star Wars games have focused on the power fantasy of being a lightsaber-swinging, Force-wielding Jedi. Thatâs all well and good, but for a long time it seemed like everyone forgot that some of the most beloved Star Wars games of all time were actually space shooters like X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter and Rogue Squadron. In many ways, Star Wars: Squadrons is a throwback to those games, both in terms of gameplay and design. Controls are a pitch perfect mix of arcade simplicity and strategy, requiring quick thinking about whether to focus your shipâs power on attacking or defending.
Squadrons is also much more tightly focused than other recent games from large publishers, with a breezy yet enjoyable single-player campaign, and a multiplayer mode that, while light on modes, eschews the more annoying modern conventions of the online PvP like invasive microtransactions. But Squadrons is not stuck in its old school ways.
If you have the hardware for it on PC or PS4, you can jump into the cockpit of any of the playable ships for one one of the most immersive VR modes around. Similar to how The Mandalorian has rejuvenated the live-action side of the Star Wars media empire, Squadrons is a perfect mix of all of the best things weâve always loved about Star Wars video games, and everything we want them to be going forward. â CF
19. Journey to the Savage Planet
Science fiction writers have long held on to this idea that, if and when humankind eventually colonizes the universe, it will do so as some sort of united, utopian entity, like Starfleet. But that future seems less and less likely every day. If and when humanity spreads across the stars, it will likely be messy, absurd, and profit-motivated. Journey to the Savage Planet wallows in that type of future. As an unnamed human (or dog, if you choose), youâre dropped onto the planet AR-Y26 by Kindred, the fourth biggest intergalactic exploration company with the simple goal of collecting as many resources as possible and leaving.
The Metroidvania gameplay loop of crafting equipment to access new areas is compelling, a rarity for 3D games in the genre. And it offers plenty of surprises too. Youâll start off with the typical blaster and scanner before eventually unlocking a grappling hook that lets you swing around levels like Spider-Man. But itâs style that ultimately lifts Journey to the Savage Planet above so many other games released in 2020. For one thing, the world and the fauna youâll encounter are incredibly unique, and well, alien. And the regular live-action updates from Kindred beamed directly to your ship are among some of the funniest and most bizarre cinematics out this year in any game, providing plenty of motivation to see this journey through to its end. â CF
18. Half-Life: Alyx
As VR gaming continues to evolve, itâs becoming clear that the technology is more than just one truly great game away from widespread adoption. If that were all it took, then Half-Life: Alyx would have put a VR set under a lot of Christmas trees.Â
Itâs truly wild to think that we got a new Half-Life game this year and that it sometimes feels like the gameâs release was barely a blip on the cultural radar. While its somewhat muted debut can be attributed to its VR exclusivity (and the fact it launched at the onset of a global health crisis), Half-Life: Alyx surpassed all possible hype by offering a truly incredibly narrative-driven adventure bolstered by some of the cleverest uses of VR technology that weâve ever seen.
Half-Life: Alyx isnât the first great VR game, but Valveâs glorious return to form does shows how VR can advance fundamental elements of gameplay and storytelling rather than just show familiar games from a new perspective. â MB
17. Carrion
The indie game space is where you typically see the most experimentation, and this year proved no different when the gruesome and morbid Carrion released back in July. Highly inspired by the likes of John Carpenterâs The Thing, Alien, and other cult classic horror films known for their excellent use of practical SFX, this platformer cleverly flips the script, putting you in the role of the monster to dispatch helpless scientists in the claustrophobic depths of an underground lab as an ever-growing amorphous blob creature. What follows is a brief but effective 2D platformer that is fast paced and delectably gory.
The controls could have made controlling the creature a real pain, but Phobia Game Studio recognized that the key here was letting you move swiftly through the levels. As such, gliding through vents to take down scientists from above or underneath quickly becomes second nature. Encounters still pose a good degree of challenge, however, thanks to the heavily armed soldiers that show up later in the game, but this never stops Carrion from fulfilling every horror aficionadoâs devilish fantasy of being the bloodthirsty monster. â AP
16. Kentucky Route Zero
Calling Kentucky Route Zero an homage to classic point-and-click adventure games is technically correct, but it doesnât come close to doing the experience justice. Kentucky Route Zero is more like a poem or fable in video game form. Itâs a feeling, a distillation of what itâs like to come of age in the Great Recession and its fallout over the last decade. Kentucky Route Zero is an epithet for rural America told through a fever dream, an examination of a version of rural Appalachia where talking skeletons and robotic musicians live alongside gas station attendants and truck drivers.
Nothing about Kentucky Route Zero fits the typical confines of what we expect from a video game, and that includes its release. Developed by a team of only three, the first episode of the five-episode experience was released in 2013, but the final product was only realized in early 2020. That lengthy development cycle meant that the gameâs scope and story could grow to only better encapsulate this moment in time, and the final product stands out as one of best games of the year. To say more is to spoil its excellent story. â CF
15. Tony Hawkâs Pro Skater 1+2
Though itâs been a hot minute since skateboarding games dominated the console space, Vicarious Visionsâ excellent remake collection of the first two Tony Hawkâs Pro Skater titles was a reminder of how the entire series captured a whole generation of players in the late â90s and early â00s. Whether itâs grinding down rails, performing kickflips, or landing the gravity-defying 1080 on a vert ramp, everything in Tony Hawkâs Pro Skater 1+2 feels and looks exactly as you remember it but touched up with modern flare. Thatâs the mark of any great remake, and why this game in particular was the best example of the practice this year.
Classic skating locations like Warehouse, School and Downtown have all been faithfully remade from the ground up for a 21st century audience, effortlessly delivering the same thrills and balanced challenge as they did before. The fact that select mechanical features like reverts, which wouldnât arrive until later entries, have been retroactively added is also a nice touch, instantly making Tony Hawkâs Pro Skater 1+2 the definitive way to experience these skateboarding classics. â AP
14. Ori and the Will of the Wisps
The fact that Ori and the Will of the Wisps managed to usurp the critically acclaimed 2015 original in most design aspects speaks to just how well Moon Studios has mastered the art of the Metroidvania. Whisking players off on another tight 10-hour journey set within a mystical forest full of secrets to discover, this 2D adventure gives off a fantastical vibe in a way few others do. Itâs an expert blend between smart combat mechanics, highly polished platforming, and emotional storytelling. That it runs at a silky 60 fps both on Nintendo Switch and Xbox is the cherry on top.
The major improvements Will of the Wisps makes over Blind Forest relate to saving and combat. Whereas previously it was the responsibility of players to lay down specific checkpoints, progress is now more in line with other 2D platformers and less punishing. Combat, meanwhile, has been completely revamped with the inclusion of special charms and upgradeable skills, most of which result in more flexible enemy encounters. These tweaks are implemented without ever compromising on Oriâs core hook of magical exploration and challenging platforming, instantly making it one of the best Metroidvanias out there. â AP
13. Call of Duty: Warzone
Call of Duty: Warzone was a natural and perhaps even necessary evolution for the long-running shooter franchise, carving out a space for it in the ever-crowding battle royale genre. While itâs largely derivative of battle royale titles that came before, the staggering 150-player count, always excellent CoD controls, top-notch presentation, and flexible cash system have made it eminently popular and fun for casual players and series vets alike. The CoD fan base feels vibrant again after years of stagnation in the shadow of breakout titles like PUBG and Fortnite, and thatâs without going into how Warzone has revitalized the franchiseâs presence in the streaming space.
One of the best facets of the gameâs design is that the large player count all but ensures that, even if a player is new to the genre or series, the chances of them being the absolute worst player in the field is very low. Better still, the âGulagâ respawn mechanic opens up the possibility for ultimate revenge should you earn your way back into the match, which is a nice way to up engagement for those who suffer disappointing deaths.
The game doesnât feel quite as dynamic or high-stakes as some of its competitors on the market, but itâs definitely one of the easiest to pick up and play. Itâs no wonder Warzone has expanded CoDâs already enormous audience over the course of 2020. â BB
12. Astroâs Playroom
With launch lineups mostly filled with graphically enhanced releases of last-gen games, the release of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X has been more than a little underwhelming. The one bright spot is Astroâs Playroom, a little first-party Sony game that received virtually no pre-release hype and comes pre-installed on every PS5.
While at first glance a typical 3D platformer, Astroâs Playroom soon reveals itself to be a fantastic showcase of whatâs possible with the new DualSense controller. In one level, youâre feeling the resistance from the controllerâs adaptive triggers as you spring jump through obstacles dressed as a frog. In another, youâre expertly moving the controller back and forth to climb walls in a robotic monkey suit. Even just standing in the rain causes the controller to pulse ever so slightly with each drop. And all of this takes place across worlds celebrating the entire history of PlayStation, where you collect classic consoles and accessories, culminating in an unexpected boss battle throwback to an original PSX tech demo.
Astroâs Playroom may be short, but itâs an oh so sweet and exciting taste of whatâs possible with the power of next-gen consoles. â CF
11. Doom Eternal
It would have been easy for Doom Eternal to be more of the same. After all, 2016âs Doom became the surprising gold-standard for single-player FPS games by virtue of its clever writing and gameplay that blended the best of classic and modern design concepts. Yet, Doom Eternal proved to be something much more than âthe same but bigger.â
With its arena-like levels and resource management mechanics, Doom Eternal sometimes feels like a puzzle game set in the Doom universe. While the transition to this new style can be jarring, you soon find that Doom Eternal is speaking the same language in a different dialect. The brutal brilliance of a classic Doom game remains but itâs presented in the form of a kind of FPS dance that puts you in a state of pure zen once you figure out how to make that perfect run through a room full of demonic baddies.Â
Four years after Doom showed this old franchise could pull off new tricks, Doom Eternal proves that this series is at the forefront of FPS innovation once more. â MB
10. Demonâs Souls
Although initially released in 2009 for the PlayStation 3, Demonâs Souls would help define the next generation of gaming by establishing the Soulslike genre, which has influenced everything from recent Star Wars games to The Legend of Zelda. The âproblemâ is that the legacy of Demonâs Souls has been sort of eclipsed by the accomplishments of its successors.
Thatâs the beauty of the remake for the PS5. Aided by the power of the consoleâs next-gen hardware, developer Bluepoint Games pays homage to one of the most historically significant games of the last 15 years while wisely updating it in ways that show that the foundation of FromSoftwareâs breakthrough hit remains arguably the best entry in a genre that isnât exactly lacking in modern classics.Â
In a year where finding a next-gen console proved to be more difficult than any Soulslike game, Demonâs Souls remains the best reason to battle the bots at online stores in the hopes of joining gamingâs next generation as soon as possible. â MB
9. Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout
There were multiple times this year where couped-up players relied heavily on âbeanâ games to help maintain a human connection. Before Among Us dominated the Twitch streams, it was Mediatonicâs intentionally clumsy and hilarious Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout that had us competitively raging with our friends. It did so by merging the wildly popular battle royale genre with the inflatable-fueled antics of early â90s game shows, where dodging swinging hammers and battling giant fruit against 59 others became the norm for a few weeks â all in the pursuit of winning a highly coveted crown.
Needless to say, making Fall Guys free to PS Plus subscribers for a month turned out to be a genius marketing move, urging everyone to hop into the gameâs inventive gamut of levels and make a fool of themselves. Much of what sets it apart from other battle royale attempts is its low-skill barrier to entry, and thanks to frequent seasonal updates, new unlockable outfits and fresh mini-games always being added, bumbling to the top of the pack as a colorful bean remains consistent fun. â AP
8. Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Itâs not an exaggeration to say that Animal Crossing: New Horizons should be included in history books about the Covid-19 pandemic. Releasing just as lockdowns were being instituted across the globe, New Horizons provided the escapism we so desperately needed while quarantining, attracting not just the usual Nintendo fanbase, but even those who had never played games in the past but were now looking for something to occupy their time at home. Whether we played it with friends or alone, New Horizons provided the routine and distraction that so many of us needed in a world suddenly thrown into chaos.
Of course, it helped that New Horizons is the best Animal Crossing game to date, with tons of new ways to customize your island (and yourself). And as Covid-19 restrictions have stretched much longer than many of us anticipated, New Horizons has kept pace, with Nintendo releasing a steady stream of new fish to catch, fruits to harvest, and events to participate in throughout the year. It may not be the game that everyone wanted, but New Horizons is the game that 2020 needed. â CF
7. Cyberpunk 2077
When Cyberpunk 2077âs legacy is written, thereâs no doubt that the opening chapter is going to focus on the bugs, technical shortcomings, and empty promises that have turned what looked to be one of 2020âs guaranteed hits into one of modern gamingâs most debated debuts.Â
Yet, the reason that this gameâs initial issues will likely not ultimately define it is that Cyberpunk 2077 reveals itself to be a special experience whenever youâre able to play it without crashes or bugs ruining your experience. From its stunning side quests that revive one of The Witcher 3âs best elements to its shockingly human narrative, Cyberpunk 2077 regularly showcases the undeniable talent of the individuals who battled internal and external factors to deliver their vision.Â
Cyberpunk 2077âs technical problems wouldnât hurt as much as they do if there wasnât a truly great game at the heart of them that people are begging to be able to play as intended. â MB
6. Final Fantasy VII Remake
The pressure was on for Square Enix from the moment it announced Final Fantasy VII Remake back in 2015. For those who obsessed over the original back in 1997, the prospect of a remake was the stuff dreams were made of, and this year we finally got to relive Cloud, Aerith, Barret, and Tifaâs grand adventure (the first act of it, at least) with fully updated, well, everything. Astonishingly, the remake actually lived up to expectations and delivered not just a faithful update to the original game but a modern RPG that stands as one of its generationâs best regardless of nostalgia.
The key to Square Enixâs success was its approach, which aimed not to duplicate the experience of the original game, but to capture the essence and spirit of it while using modern game design to deliver the story in a way that doesnât feel retro or rehashed at all. The game looks dazzling by 2020 standards (Midgar never looked better) but doesnât compromise the integrity of the original designs, and the real-time combatâarguably the biggest departure from the originalâis a blast to play.
Time will tell how exactly Square Enix will follow through with the rest of the remake as we enter a new console generation, but in the meantime, they studio has left us with a terrific reimagining of the most celebrated title in the studioâs expansive oeuvre. â BB
5. Assassinâs Creed Valhalla
Ubisoft deserves credit for keeping a franchise like Assassinâs Creed, which is 13 years old at this point, thriving in an industry that is flooded with more open world games now than it ever has been. The series is always competitive in the genre, and Assassinâs Creed Valhalla proves why: itâs as refined as any of its predecessors and delivers a balanced experience with a rich world to explore, tons of strange stories to uncover, and a mash-up milieu that combines the eerie atmosphere of 5th-century England with the otherworldly spectacle of Norse mythology.
No open world game is perfect, and Valhalla certainly has a handful of shortcomings. But itâs a bloody good time to play, and thereâs so much to do that thereâs no question that you get your moneyâs worth. Eivorâs quest for glory and domination is also arguably the most cinematic story in the entire AC catalog, with some truly breathtaking cutscenes that rival those found in more linear games that canât sniff Valhallaâs scope. Some of the more otherworldly moments in the back half of the game are pure, unadulterated, nonsensical fun, and overall, this is one of the best entries in the series. â BB
4. Marvelâs Spider-Man: Miles Morales
Insomniac is one of those studios that you can always rely on to deliver fun, polished games that shine in every category, and Marvelâs Spider-Man: Miles Morales only adds to the teamâs sterling reputation. Building on the already brilliant formula the studio created with the original Marvelâs Spider-Man, Milesâs story is one of loss, friendship, identity, and the strength of the Black and Hispanic communities of Harlem.
The side-quel is also one of the best launch titles arguably ever. While it is a cross-gen game, the PS5 version is currently the best showcase of what next-gen gaming is capable of from a visual and performance standpoint. You wonât find a better-looking New York City in any other video game, period, and Insomniacâs outstanding animation work looks insanely good when bolstered by the PS5âs considerable horsepower. Miles plays differently than Peter Parker did in the original game as well, with his Venom Powers giving enemy encounters a new feel and rhythm.
Insomniac outdid itself with an excellent follow-up that wouldâve been a forgettable DLC expansion in the hands of a less ambitious studio. But Miles Morales is one of the best modern-day superhero characters ever created, and itâs only right that he get a game that lives up to his greatness. â BB
3. Hades
The popularity of roguelikes has been calmly bubbling up for years now, yet only in 2020 did it truly become mainstream thanks to an ideal balance between gameplay and story as demonstrated by Hades. Players who previously took umbrage with the genreâs nature to wipe out all progress at each runâs end suddenly had a reason to jump back in, now inspired by Zagreusâ various tries to escape hell and overthrow his eponymous father. This alone sees Hades tower over most of its peers in terms of balance, further backed up by rewarding gameplay and a gorgeous comic book art style that makes the well-worn mythological Greek milieu feel fresh.
Developer Supergiant Games proved its penchant for creating flexible mechanical loops in prior titles, and in many ways, Hades feels like a culmination of all those ideas distilled in one neat package. Itâs a great example of semi-randomized systems layering perfectly on top of other systems, until players eventually find themselves completing runs using distinct weapons, upgrading persistent abilities and slowly discovering which of the godâs many boons gel best with one another. Hades is always a hellishly good time. â AP
2. Ghost of Tsushima
The concept of honor has never been explored in a game as lyrically and philosophically as it is in Ghost of Tsushima, Sucker Punchâs story-driven samurai epic. Jin Sakaiâs grand adventure is both brutal and beautiful, stretching across the grasslands and snowy peaks of the titular island, as he pushes the oppressive Mongol army out of his homeland, all the while wrestling internally with the kind of man, warrior, and leader he ultimately wants to be.
This game is outstanding on so many fronts that itâs difficult to list them all here. Visually, it looks so stunning that anyone who walks past your TV as you play is all but guaranteed to stop and stare for a while. The combat is fast and challenging, the stealth mechanic is on-point, the score is sweeping and sentimental, the character models are incredibly realistic, the online multiplayer mode âLegendsâ is actually a blast to playâŚand the list goes on. This poetic, pitch-perfect modern masterpiece is emblematic of the soulful, cinematic storytelling PlayStation Studios is known for, and itâs a wonderful way to send the PS4 off into the sunset. â BB
1. The Last of Us Part II (Also Readerâs Choice)
You canât even say the name of our 2020 game of the year without sparking numerous debates that often make it nearly impossible to have a productive conversation about the game itself. That makes it that much more tempting to somehow find a kind of middle-ground that will âjustifyâ the gameâs lofty position to everyone regardless of where they stand.Â
The thing about The Last of Us Part 2,though, is that its divisiveness is very much part of the experience. Naughty Dogâs follow-up to arguably its greatest game is a bold attempt to live up to the franchiseâs legacy by furthering what came before while trying to find its own way. Much like Ellie herself, The Last of Us Part 2 doesnât always make the right decisions. Yet, at a time when bigger budgets are seen as an excuse to play it safe, The Last of Us Part 2 impresses through its willingness to present a big, bold, and personal adventure that is often anything but what was expected.Â
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Anyone can generate a little controversy by saying something stupid, offensive, or hurtful. The beauty of The Last of Us Part 2âs controversy is that it stems from a heartfelt attempt to advance the conversation through indie-like passion and big budget production. â MB
