i ♥ assigning book ahab traits to limbus ahab
#[reference to when they're nearing the end of the book and ahab stays on deck all day/night without rest#and sometimes stands with his hat slouched over his eyes in a way that prevents people from telling if they're#open and he's awake or if they're closed and he's literally just Sleeping Standing Up]#limbus company#ahab#ishmael#queequeg

the more i think about it, the more im convinced that the two major moby dick characters in canto 5: ish, obviously, and queequeg, are actually reversed versions of their book counterparts. 100% opposites. only ahab is just the same flavor of insane
#limbus company#ishmael lcb#the way they handled queequeg’s writing was super bad btw. my last straw#though i still enjoyed canto 5#at least they kept the book source as a reference point of any kind (unlike EKHEM canto 7)

Hough… learning sign language with queequeg… even if the middle has taken her speech you and her find other ways to comfortably communicate… it makes her feel less bound to them.
it's a mix of by-the-book sign language and your own signals. the signals come easily if you're working on a ship. you're often on opposite sides and catch each other's eye. the words are learned at night, when everyone else is asleep and you're sitting in Queequeg's lap by only the light of a lantern. you both hunch over an old, tattered book, gradually picking up how to position your hands for words and letters. she adjusts yours if there are any errors, her tattooed hands gently grazing your skin. occasionally she simply holds your wrists loosely, allowing you to run your fingers over the scars and ropes wound around her arms, and the silent, imposing harpooner has never looked softer and more at ease. here, she doesn't have to worry about her tongue failing, only about making sure you don't accidentally fall asleep
she picks up a habit, often using sign language for any words. but not your name- never. Queequeg always says your name aloud, the word falling from her lips in a slow, tender cadence. it's something precious to her, the name of someone she's come to love and adore. you can always tell when she's going to call to you, her hands slowing their movements until they're still and a small smile on her face. she whispers your name, over and over again, when it's dark and freezing cold, her forehead pressed against yours and your hand on her braids as she holds you close against her. carefully she laces her fingers with yours, her free hand signing three words, and Queequeg brings your hand up and presses a kiss to the back of it, then the palm, then your fingertips, then every line and valley until you brush a thumb under her eyes and she lets out a soft hum and one last murmur of your lovely, wonderful name
#project moon#limbus company#lcb#queequeg lcb#not binah#this is excellent#send me more queequeg asks#that's an order not a request#the forehead pressing is a reference to the original book#and the three words are i love you

When I see the argument "Why does Dante have to be a pre-existing character? Why can't they just be themself/just Dante/a completely original character?" I can't help but feel that the people saying that... aren't really looking at the bigger picture, and especially not of the running themes of Limbus Company, and the way the Sinners' stories go in general.
For one thing, we have had a running tally of times Dante's past has been brought up even outside of the prologue, with them being referred to as having once been "a big shot" and during the Regular Check Up, Hohenheim points out - before being shushed by Faust, which emphasises how big of a deal this was - that Dante is integral to the flow of the world.
They are clearly someone of great importance.
Even not counting any theories on who they are, we ARE going to find out who they used to be. Even at this point, it's an inevitability, due to the nature of the story itself.
Why is that?
Because it's in the nature of Project Moon's works.
In Lobotomy Corporation we are first introduced to the Sephirot, who have all lost their memories and have been programmed to believe that they've only ever worked in the Facility. It takes the Manager (Ayin, often the very one who hurt them in the first place) working with them in order to get them to remember, and then we find out who they used to be. In fact, in the process of finding out who the Sephirot are, we find out that the Manager himself isn't just "Manager X" but he's been Ayin All Along.
In Library of Ruina, we the player are expected to have already gone through Lobotomy Corporation, so we already know who the Librarians and Angela are. Roland, though? Our point of view character is, again, a mystery... who gets slowly unravelled as the game goes on, to the point that the very last thread is only pulled in the endgame.
Now, in Limbus Company, we have Dante. Who has amnesia, which we SAW them do to themself. Judging by what's happened in the past two games, wouldn't it stand to reason that the same applies to them? That over the course of the Cantos, we aren't just finding out more about the Sinners, but also about Dante themself, and no matter who they end up being, we WILL see their original face, AND memories of their past self, sooner or later?
That's only in comparison to the previous two games. If you compare Dante's storyline to that of the other Sinners, the picture I get at least is that all of the Sinners have something that they are effectively running away from, a home they usually don't want to return to, and consequences that are catching up to them.
Let's face it. It's gonna be pretty difficult if the game just goes through all of Dante's storyline and never reveals who they were. Not just narratively, but also for everyone involved. Dante themself has been wondering, too, even if they don't want the information unceremoniously dumped on them.
I've seen some suggest that Dante should just stay as they are, or refuse to face their past, and... wouldn't that go against the character development we want the other Sinners to go through? We want the others to develop and grow and learn from their experiences, becoming stronger and more able to face themselves, right? So why not the same for Dante?
There's this concept I read about a long time ago in a book, which suggested that in order to know your present, you have to also understand your past. You have to know how you got to this point in order to know that you're able to move forward properly.
Personally, as is stated in my many meta posts and in my blog header right now, my own theory is that Dante's past self was Ayin. Personally, I don't think that Dante will change all that much at all once they have their memories back - or at least, the changes would be no different than Don Quixote's. Dante would have, first and foremost, context for everything.
However, I do think that no matter who Dante ends up being, the person they've been for all this journey is now a part of them. No matter what. If someone's afraid that they're going to change because they've got their memories back... well, yeah, they probably will. And I'm sure it won't be fun for them either.
But, y'know what? They definitely won't be fully who they were before, either. That's how people change as humans.

stupid ass Don Quixote ramblings
hi this is my first tumblr post but i really wanted a good place to put this
spoilers for all of current limbus company, including Murder on the warp Express, the Don Quixote book (( kinda )), and a musical (( i'll get there ))
please humor this deranged rant about a character i havent read the source book of
so basically ive had a theory since Don was even teased that she's less so based on book Don Quixote and moreso based on the Man of La Mancha musical which is. an insane thing to suggest but hear me out here (( ive since changed how i word my stance to the much more mild "it will most likely delve into the themes of both works and reference both" because suggesting they would discount the book entirely is TRUE insanity ))
her quote (( from teaser tweets that i cannot find anymore? they seem like they were deleted which sucks )) was "To reach the unreachable star!" or something which is notably not a quote from the original book ((as far as im aware at least?)), and suggests. a lot i think!
One of the most notable differences between Man of La Mancha and the original Don Quixote is their tone and attitude towards Quixote. In the original text, he's shown to be a fool who is ignorant to the vastly more interesting world around him, and prefers to instead sink deeper into his delusions of reality equating to chivalric literature. This makes sense as Don Quixote was written as a parody and mockery of the genre
La Mancha is, notably, much more forgiving on Quixote's character, showing that while still a fool, and his insanity often detrimental to those around him, he is still a good person at heart and that he truly wishes to pursue this justice he posits
I usually say it as "Don Quixote is about how reality is beautiful, and La Mancha is about how sometimes one should strive to make reality a little more fantastical" although i dont know if that. is the most accurate comparison. both Don Quixote and La Mancha have a lot of themes and stuff going on
one of the things that made me scream was learning about "Miguel" being written on don's LCB combat spritesheet instead of her listed name
which if you've seen or read a summary of la mancha is a huge alarm bell
In La Mancha, the whole thing is shown as a Play within a Play
Miguel de Cerventes is sent to prison, awaiting trial by the inquisition, and is tasked with defending himself in a mock trial with the other prisoners so they dont take his belongings. His defense is Don Quixote, Man of La Mancha! With the prisoners acting out the various roles he assigns them, and him acting as the leading man, Don Quixote himself!
that was most of the things that made me think "Oh, maybe it'll be La Mancha!" and then this happened
and i sort of lost my god damned mind
because like what if this is miguel... what if shes simultaneously playing out her life as don quixote as a her delusion, and as her dream, but also as a statement...
idk but this isnt JUST about Man of La Mancha bc i think this has a few implications for how don's canto is going to go
In both don quixote and la mancha, they send someone to cure quixote of his delusions
The final thing they try is setting up an act where a "Knight of Mirrors" duels with Quixote, which ends up working.
The Knight forces Quixote to see how he is perceived by others, to see the truth that he is no knight.
ignoring the stuff with vampires and mirrors for a second, i feel like this could be more mirror world shenanigans, where either the knight IS a mirror world don quixote, or is someone who will show her mirror worlds. Whatever that will imply!!! i dont know its exciting!!!!!
Her being absurdly old and powerful, plus bloodfiends having a whole familial adjacent hierarchy makes me think theres a LOT of bloodfiends out there that would want her back
I dunno!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
im insane!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!! i just wanted to get my thoughts out before her canto actually happened so i can say that i did indeed have an opinion on this
-limbus assets taken form Lunartique's asset google drive go look at it -text written by me and not proofread
ok thanks bye dont follow me byeee byeeeeee
#limbus company#don quixote#limbus spoilers#project moon#ramblings#if her name ends up being confirmed as Miguel i will cry so loudly in a joyous chorus of crying loudly#forgive me#fan theory#limbus don quixote#lcb

I like to make myself suffer, so I took my gacha games OCs and tried to draw them in artstyles of games they're from (as close as I could get to, at least)
Disclaimer: many of these games have a lot going on in their lore, and I'm just a silly creature, so there will be some inaccuracies in lore of characters for sure x')
Disney: Twisted Wonderland
Horkos de Kalliste
Most of twst characters are based on villains from classical Disney movies. Horkos, however was based on villain from another animation studio: he is inspired by Eris from Sinbad by DreamWorks. So yeah, he's a troublemaker, playing devil's advocate, disagreeing with everyone for funsies and pitting friends against eachother when he can. His one redeeming quality is that he also never ever breaks promises.
Reverse 1999
Alexei Kashtanov
Alexei is an American spy in USSR during Cold War. That's it that's the man. His cover blew up and the day was going really badly for him, but in this AU or something that's when the Storm was coming and Vertin took him to St. Pavlov Foundation. Where he once again became a spy, this time spying on Manus Vindictae.
Limbus Company
Winston
So you might already guess that Winston is inspired by 1984 by George Orwell. Employee of the year, asking zero questions and obeying authorities to absurd extent. The easiest way to make him lose his mind is to give him conflicting orders and watch as he struggles to fulfil both. Speaks weirdly (Newspeak, if you know you know). Has a pet lab rat he named Big Brother, because I love my references a little messed up. Man, I wonder what awful things happened to make him so unwilling to express his will and opinions... (His story is a bit different from book Winston, of course, but is also similar enough).
Honkai: Star Rail
Aetio
(Rogue) doctor of chaos OC! Aetio's whole planet was blown up in war, with her and a soldier from another side of conflict being the only survivors. For a while they thought they were the last people in the world, since their planet was unaware of all the stuff going on in the broader universe. And then they learned that the war which was their entire life, their whole culture, their loved ones were nothing in scope of universe.
So Aetio found her new meaning in life in trying to find universal formula of resolving existential crisis, travelling worlds and trying to understand what makes people get up in the mornings. Her companion from her original planet became her friend, and then he joined Memokeepers, btw
Morimens
Laurel
An Awakened, loosely based on Lovecraft's short story "The Temple". Laurel is hailed from Atlantis, which was destroyed in war, so he really, really hates everything and everyone connected to it. His silver core was first discovered during one of wars, sadly, and his first Keeper was a soldier. Angry that his Keeper took part in war and not taking anything for an excuse, Laurel killed him, completely uncaring about the fact that he'll die next if another Keeper doesn't find him. And then it happened several more times, before his silver core was finally found by Keeper we play as.

🌻 Stream of More or Less Organized Thoughts on Canto 8 (Spoilers) 🌻
Okay so I can finally take the time to talk about Canto VIII, which was probably the Canto I was looking forward to the most since Hong Lu is my favorite character in Limbus Company and all the mysteries surrounding him intrigued me greatly (I can’t believe I read so many essays on Dream of the Red Chamber and read both its English and French versions to try to better understand his character, ah the good old days ~)
Anyway, all this to say the hype was real but I feared one thing—given the length of the book and the number of characters, I was afraid it would be too much for the format of Limbus Company and that the Canto would end up being just a parade of references and characters without real coherence or that some characters considered very important in the book would be brushed aside.
On that level I’m both convinced and a little disappointed.
I was still rather surprised by the number of characters with a character design, and I find them all very well done. I prefer to continue with the positive points before coming back to the knot that bothered me on my side.
Visually, it’s flawless. The number of backgrounds is impressive, each more beautiful than the last. The music is also superb, with a special mention to the level selection screen’s music, which seems to be linked to Lin Daiyu.
The animations are full of beautiful little details—whether it's those of Jia Qiu, the illustrations, or the ending animation, enhanced by Mili’s music, really flawless.
Tian Tian, by the way, was really enjoyable without blowing me away but the animation and dialogues really helped highlight it for me, even if she doesn’t dethrone Hero or Through Patches of Violets (you the best) in my heart. I feel like I’m the only one who didn’t fall in love with the music and I almost feel sorry about it knowing the place Canto VIII has in my relationship with Limbus but that’s how it is—it’s just not my kind of music.
The first part left me puzzled, not in a bad way: I didn’t know where it was going, which only piqued my curiosity even more. And what a second part!
Everything was so sad, so horrible, I remember thinking for three days about the horror Hong Lu had to go through in the lab.
And I mean, I expected we would go through a valley of horror in his Canto because there was no doubt in my mind that Hong Lu’s behavior was a response to one or several very very traumatic events and oh boy, we were served.
Hong Lu who had to witness the torture done to the test subjects despite his opposition, Hong Lu who had to witness the massacre he tried to prevent, his cries and desperate pleas to Xiren and his grandmother who are the only adults who showed him affection and whom he feels he can turn to were heartbreakoing to watch.
Xiren’s brainwashing, convincing Hong Lu that he couldn’t talk to anyone else, isolating him even more and even despite that when he tries to beg his grandmother hoping she would care it didn't work.
Nothing works, he just accepts his role in this story by trying to distance himself from others and especially from those he loves in the hope of no longer seeing the people he loves hurt and hoping he no longer has to suffer or see others suffer.
The fall of the Kong clan (in perfect alignment with the theme of DORC), the horror of the birth of those monsters (horrible, horrible scene), and just hearing a 10 years old Hong Lu ask his grandmother to let him go and close his eyes without her even showing a hint of sympathy because it’s not his role: the nail in the coffin.
All of that hurt so much and was heartbreaking.
Witnessing Hong Lu’s isolation and progressive renouncement of individuality was soul-crushing to watch and finally his call for help into the void to be comforted and just seeking reassurance and to know it wasn’t his fault—I just wanted to give him a hug.
Truly a masterpiece at that level and very happy to find a bit of that uncanny horror unique to the PM world again.
By the way, love the foreshadowings but PM must really thinks itself to be the funniers with Hong Lu's Corrosions EGO, going back on these details I am like "Come on, no way!!"
I thought for a moment he was going to distort by reliving all that. Fortunately—or sadly—he’s so disconnected from his own emotions that it barely affects him anymore. On that note, I was a bit disappointed that he didn’t have an encounter with Carmen, especially since it was heavily theorized since Hell’s Kitchen.
But at the same time it also makes sense for Hong Lu at this moment because as said earlier, Hong Lu has muted all his emotions, opinions, and feelings about what’s happening to him and what happened in the past.
So even if it hurt him a lot, it hurt so much that he simply snapped emotionally to no longer feel anything, not even a deep desire or emotion with which Carmen could resonate with.
He’s just starting to allow himself to feel all of that again and that brings me to my next point.
First, I love Jia Qiu with all my heart—already when I saw him during the Sweeper’s intel scene, I was just blown away and prayed he was on our side because he was so beautiful and looked so much like my favorite character from The Untamed that it was hard not to drink in his words.
And boy, my prayers were heard because Jia Qiu was just the MVP of this canto.
His past, his interactions with his little team and with Hong Lu whom he sincerely encourages, having witnessed his kindness, his badass nature and his attitude combined with his little aura of mystery linked to his absence—amazing.
I really liked the scene where he asks for compensation for Zilu and they take the opportunity to emphasize how strong he is.
His interactions with his small group became more and more adorable to watch, whether it’s their show of affection and respect for each other or when Jia Qiu criticizes Xifeng’s plan to just rip out Hong Lu’s eye. (another scene that many expected, I mean Jia Baoyu (OG) gets wax in his eyes in the novel and everything made us believe that Hong Lu himself or someone close to him might try to attack his eye)
And when I read that I was like “oh yeah, not a dumb plan, I hadn't thought about that too.”
Okay sometimes I wanted to tell Jia Qiu to step back and take Dante by the hand to tell them to do something because I found Dante quite passive compared to usual.
Sure, we understand that Dante is now more at peace with their role as manager (as we saw in Canto VII), and they did push Hong Lu forward and help him with their new power but here, they were delegating almost everything to Jia Qiu.
And even if that might make narrative sense since Jia Qiu, in a way, has the right to excuse Hong Lu’s past actions as a representative of the Kong clan, I would have liked Dante to be more involved, to talk with Hong Lu and participate more actively in his process of liberation.
Anyway, to go back to Hong Lu’s emotional state throughout the chapter, I found it very well handled and even though I would have liked to see Hong Lu get angry or sob over what happened to him, I find it almost more interesting to take time with that.
We know the sinners’ arc is not over afterward and I think Hong Lu will slowly learn to express desires, wishes, and emotions again.
As Faust told him, Hong Lu’s wish will be to want.
At the end we see Hong Lu open a dam full of water to defeat his grandmother and for me that’s a clear sign that Hong Lu released all those emotions (and especially his sorrow) from the dam that was used to contain them, accepting to feel them and live with them now.
But there was a lot...
I think Hong Lu will now go through a path that will teach him how to feel and express emotions and who knows—maybe some of those emotions could come out in a twisted way in the future because of how unused he is to expressing them, and Carmen might show up at the worst moment.
Also, Hong Lu could still have a lot of anger in him, anger that is still dormant for now if you will, but which he is now ready to let awaken so I don’t know, I’m a bit scared for Hong Lu on that level...
Part 2 of the Canto remains the most striking to me: it’s the one where Hong Lu is the most shaken, both as a child and an adult. It’s the one that touched me the most emotionally, even though part 3 also had some beautiful moments.
Small important note before talking about more bitter things, but it’s always a pleasure to see the sinners interact with each other or with others—very funny or touching or interesting, I maybe would have liked a bit more involvement with Hong Lu and his evolution but Sinclair and especially Yi Sang still had a small role in Hong Lu’s Canto and I understand, it’s always hard and it might feel weird to force all 12 sinners to be involved that deeply in Hong Lu’s story and emotional state.
I kind of wish Heathcliff had been more in the spotlight, but at the same time, there were already so many characters and things to set up that I understand why they chose to keep Heathcliff more in the background.
Super cool to get some info about Ryoshu (if she’s a mother, I’m going to cry, for sure).
Yi Sang is so funny with his ex, and I’m really proud of him and his growth — truly delightful.
Gregor and Rodya are still as hilarious as ever, and it was nice to see Sinclair, Ishmael, and Don each get their moments, along with Outis.
Meursault was a bit more withdrawn, but personally I’m okay with that — it has to fall on one of the sinners, and I prefer that over forced lines of dialogue. He still had a few funny moments too.
Anyway, still a huge fan of the Club of 13.
That being said, it’s time I tackle my biggest critiques of this Canto.
I must admit my main criticism of this Canto lies in the use of certain characters.
I wish some had been explored further — especially in connection to their original versions in the novel.
I felt this particularly strongly with Lin Daiyu, Hong Lu’s parents, and not so much for Jia Mu but I wil still adressed her adaptation.
Starting off, I was very surprised to see Lin Daiyu still alive (love her design!!).
I really thought she’d already be dead, and that her death would’ve been one of the catalysts for Hong Lu’s state at the beginning of Limbus. But I was wrong — and that’s not a complaint! On the contrary, it’s always nice when a story catches you off guard after you think you’ve figured it out.
That said, Lin Daiyu felt incredibly sidelined.
We understand she played a role in Hong Lu’s childhood, but she felt so… far away, even though she’s supposed to be like Hong Lu's Cathy.
I really wish she had been closer to her novel counterpart, at least through iconic elements like her debt of tears, her fragile health, or her link to the Crimson Flower.
And I was hoping that the mention of a red flower would lead to a connection to the Little Prince’s flower — and maybe, through that, a little more mention of Dante's past.
Maybe the reveal about Hong Lu’s jade made it impossible to bring in the flower concept, since he turned out to not be quite what we thought — maybe a celestial flower didn’t make sense anymore.
Still, I hope the flower shows up later with (hopefully) Lin Daiyu’s return.
And sure, I understand this is an adaptation — really, I do — but removing elements so core to her character struck me as odd, especially when Limbus usually takes care to preserve the essence of the original characters.
Maybe I’m nitpicking, but aside from her stubbornness and her friendship with Hong Lu, this version of Lin Daiyu didn’t resemble her original self much at all.
That’s a shame.
I almost feel like she should’ve taken Xichun’s role in this version, since in the end, Hong Lu seems much closer to his little sister than to Lin Daiyu.
And that’s understandable: Xichun is the only one who didn’t betray, criticize, or try to hurt him. She’s that little sliver of innocence in his life, before he had to completely shut himself out.
But really, Lin Daiyu could have played that role — even without being his sister.
There were moments where I just wanted to pull her to the front of the stage.
As for Hong Lu’s parents, I found them pretty passive overall — especially his father.
Honestly, I imagined his father as the Chinese version of Lelouch vi Britannia’s dad LOL — that’s just how I pictured him while reading the book.
Despite his inability to be competent, he can be so awful in the novel that I imagined him as a brute.
So once again I was surprised when I saw him — but not in a bad way! On the contrary, I thought “Hey, that’s true, Baoyu’s father is described as incompetent and unable to manage anything,” and that pathetic side is reflected a bit when we talk to him.
I found it interesting that they emphasized his “unimpressive” side in his appearance. I thought he was going to reveal a much more cruel side at some point, but… nothing.
When he vanished halfway through the tournament, I thought, “He’s definitely in on it and has gone off to prepare something horrible for the end of the Canto — we’re about to learn his true nature!!” And in the end, the guy never came back.
Honestly, I wish he’d had a more active role in Hong Lu’s suffering or conditioning, since the Canto and character are more or less an adaptation in the world of Limbus.
I mean, the kid has already been through enough to convince himself he’s just a window to the outside world, and we understand that he is chastised by the others in his family because of the favor he has toward the elders, which is a really interesting point I have to admit, but the tormentors are anonymize in a way, they are a crowd, a mass.
Which again, it's really good because it helps to create from the start this idea of loneliness and isolation in Hong Lu's life with the others. It's him against the whispers. (even if yes he has his two friends and Xiren)
However, Jia Mu takes a more individual role in Hong Lu's pain and trauma and I think Hong Lu's dad could have share it in some way. Not by doing the same thing but by also taking the role of an individual traumatic figure in Hong Lu's life. (hope it's clear).
I couldn’t stop thinking about that chilling scene in the novel where Baoyu gets beaten nearly to death by his father in a fit of rage and humiliation.
A scene like that or even just implied could’ve worked really well in Limbus, and added even more horror and helplessness to what Hong Lu feels and help lessen the burden of Jia Mu to carry all this role to herself, emphasising the role of the adults invidually - close to Hong Lu in his life - instead and making a reference to the book by using it. As said, maybe it would have also helped to less villainized grandma - maybe it could have even help to reinforce why Jia Mu is still trusted by Hong Lu if not by fear and filial piety, but also because she was / is here for him against his father, like in the book.
The mother, Lady Wang, was okay overall.
I regret the absence of the older brother of Jia Baoyu, because in the novel, his death colors the mother with bitterness — she would’ve preferred him to survive instead. But I get that there wasn’t really room to develop that here.
Lady Wang stays true to her role.
No, really, what I missed was the father's implication.
In the novel, he’s Baoyu’s biggest source of fear — and in Limbus, he’s just… background.
Side note: where was Wang Xifeng? I really expected her to take Jia Yuanchun’s role, not necessarily at the end, but at least in the beginning.
She’s so the symbol of someone who handles all the household business with Grandmother Jia.
She also conspires with Grandmother Jia in the novel to marry Xue Baochai to Baoyu — so in Limbus, she could’ve been in on it too, standing beside her during the selection ceremony, and then at the end we discover the separated existence of Yuanchun.
Honestly, that’s a shame.
I also regret that there was no explanation of the “Land of Illusion” in Hong Lu’s EGO.
The term is mentioned, it’s even on his character teaser art, and it’s so central to the novel… but here it’s just a phrase tossed out.
Is it just the name he gives to his emotional retreat mechanism?
No reference to the “Paradise of Truth,” not even in his new EGO line, even though Jia Qiu was scrubbing floors with us while waiting for Hong Lu to speak his truth.
Well, at least Prospect Garden got used.
Overall, I sometimes felt like this Canto started brushing up against really interesting ideas — like something powerful was about to bloom…
But the pacing, the need to focus on Jia Qiu, the family members, the fall of H Corp, and Hong Lu’s inner evolution always took precedence.
Which I totally understand — there was no way we could skip his reconstruction after everything he’s been through.
Still, I’m left with a feeling of skimming over things or incompleteness.
Maybe I’m just projecting too much of my own reading of the novel onto Limbus Company, and that’s the danger with this and theories — the line between hoping something happens and needing it to happen because you’ve imagined it for so long is very thin.
You have to accept that your interpretation wasn’t shared.
But that doesn’t stop the disappointment from settling in and feeling like the adaptation could have been done better at some parts.
As for Jia Mu, that’s a more complex story, because I actually really liked the approach of making her an antagonist to Hong Lu.
Yes, in the novel, Baoyu’s grandmother loves him and is one of the few who protects him (from his father especially).
But I think PM just brought forward elements that were already strongly implied in her character — and in the world of Limbus Company, it makes perfect sense that those traits would intensify.
For me, the grandmother’s love for Baoyu in the novel stems largely from his exceptional status symbolized by his jade.
She loves him for his jade and the status it grants him.
And while she wants Baoyu to remain carefree and playful, she’s also the one who manipulates him into marrying Xue Baochai, ignoring his feelings for Lin Daiyu.
Plus, Grandmother Jia only wants the family to survive and prosper — and she knows how to get what she wants.
So honestly, I don’t think her behavior toward Hong Lu in Limbus is all that strange.
Sure, it might’ve been nice if her love had felt more sincere — but at the same time, this portrayal makes sense to me.
Continuing on, I do see the message behind the jade not being magical but just a camera — demystifying Hong Lu’s fate and turning it into a symbol of his family’s chains and burdens.
Buuut… I admit I kind of wanted there to be more to it, something closer to the novel version.
But that’s just personal preference, and I totally get what I think PM was trying to do with that symbolism.
Still, it echoed tears of stars so much (even though they don’t serve the same purpose) and I was hoping for something different.
Hong Lu, I know you were emotionally shut down at that point, but could you have at least reacted a little to seeing a mechanism similar to yours?
Okay, that’s just a selfish wish — but I wanted a magical jade.
Also, I’d like to apologize to Baochai for accusing her of betrayal so confidently — but at the same time, I still really don’t trust her. I think I’ll dedicate a separate post to my opinion of her...
In the end, these aren’t really critiques so much as a collection of lingering thoughts. This Canto left me with a lot of questions:
Was Baoyu’s jade really just a camera?
Why does it lose its shine at certain moments?
Why does it glow in certain scenes?
And why is Hong Lu afraid of it in his Liu Story?
And as Faust says, why bother with something so conspicuous?
Are the Elders the ones activating it?
Why is he the only one who has this jade?
And if it’s so special, why was it never explained in what way?
(Yes, I’m really paying attention to what they’re going to do with the jade.)
I sincerely hope PM has all this in mind and that these mysteries will be explored in the future. Because even though the ambiguity fuels my theories and makes me want to dissect everything, it would leave a bitter taste if it all turned out to be a flash in the pan. But the post-credit scene gives me hope.
All in all, I found this Canto quite good, with some beautiful moments and striking scenes and a really good exploration and breaking of Hong Lu's character. But a few details, some personal expectations, and a certain underuse of characters keep me from placing it above Cantos 6 or 4 — and maybe even 7.

LIMBUS SINNER TAROT ANALYSIS
I. Yi Sang-- The Magician
Today I will be beginning a series analyzing each LCB Sinner's connection to the corresponding Major Arcana card, based on sinner number. Our number of sinners, 13, matches with what's typically understood as the first half of the Major Arcana, The Magician to Death. Further significance comes from the fact that the Major Arcana represent the different bridges between the Sephira of the Kabbalah, a consistent theme in the Project Moon world.
For my analysis, because there is so much variety in described meaning between different tarot decks, I'll be referring to the Rider-Waite deck, perhaps the most popular deck, the Inversion Tarot, my personal deck of choice, and Robert Wang's book The Qabalistic Tarot.
There's actually a lot to say about Yi Sang as The Magician!

The Magician firstly represents “skill”, and “will” in the Raider Waite deck, paralleled by the Inversion deck’s more fleshed out descriptions of “Manifestation: transforming an idea into something real” and “Skillful, intentional action”. Here we have some apt descriptions of Yi Sang’s “talent” (rather than genius, which I will discuss next) and creativity as an inventor. “Transforming an idea into something real” uses the word “idea,” which I feel is particularly noteworthy. Yi Sang’s invention of the mirror is very much driven by his desire to explore an idea, wanting to explore the vast possibilities of existence.
Looking further, Rider-Waite provides with “sickness” and “mental illness” respectively for the upright and inverted Magician. In Limbus, Yi Sang is depicted as having a rather weak constitution, with examples like his extreme seasickness and being evaluated as having been the weakest before coming to Limbus Company. Breaching into the "real" world, the historical Yi Sang died due to tuberculosis, and physical weakness is a theme among the protagonists of his work. While I find it reductive to describe Limbus Yi Sang as "mentally ill," he appears to experience depressive symptoms as well as describes himself as a "taxidermied genius". A key turning point in his life is the rejection of medication supplied by N Corp to make him see the world in the way that they want him to.
The Magician connects Kether and Binah. The Kabbalah is... not something I have a super firm grasp on, but I will try my best and refer to the previously mentioned source. Kether describes the "Divine will" and "Impulse towards creation", while Binah describes "Understanding", particularly understood as a constructed, holistic comprehension of what one is presented with.
"The Twelfth Path is the Intelligence of Transparency because it is that species of Magnificence called Chazchazit, which is named the place whence issues the vision of those seeing in apparitions (That is the prophesies by seers in a vision)" (Wang, 239).

Been playing Alter Ego recently, extremely cool game!!! Reminds me a tone of Library of Ruina, and some of the books mentioned are also books referenced in Limbus Company The brainrot is real (fr) Made a lil reference sheet for when I wanna draw more Es and Wanderer! Wanderer design was smacked together pretty fast, fueled entirely by hopes and dreams of library yuri Speed run of the idea behind my Wanderer design, spoiler territory and terrible writing ahead: Wanted to create beeg contrast between Es and the Wanderer. Wanderer being someone more free/unbound by extremes (ID vs SE) through visuals and colour palette. Through visuals, loads messier. Draped fabric going every which way, hair unkempt, covered in injuries sustained from wandering (or whatever it is wanderers do) (i'm assuming they wander) (could be wrong). Colour palette wise, Es's palette is mostly darker tones but some lighter tones aswell, however blending/greys not really too much to be seen (darker tones representing ID). Wanderer, bc of AE ending, i tried to have more grey, very similar tones that melt into each other. A middle path per-say. Also added some braids into Wanderers hair bc aye y not have matching hairstyles with ur wild n wacky librarian gf

Limbus side characters as Yuu!
I’m back sorry for the wait! Had to do side charters I still need time to flesh out the ideas I have for Twst in Limbus. So I have side characters as Yuu in the meantime. These are going to be limbus side charters up till canto 3. This might be a part one since I know there are quite a few side charters that are in fact interesting.
(TLDR: go play limbus company, or twisted wonderland if either concept interests you.)
Obligatory spoiler warning: Not as egregious, and most of the characters are side characters, but Limbus company is a free game so if anything talked about interests you please check out respective games. I’ve talked in previous posts about how you really should check out Project moon’s lore. I have been neglecting talking about Twisted wonderland in these spoiler warning sections. I think it is clear that I show bias in writing for Twisted wonderland as a setting. I incline more to its world building aspects so if you do want to check out the characters for real, please. try to check it out if it interests you.
TW:heavy expectations, corporate abuse, abuse of power, Fake feelings, light topics of depression, scars, violence, religious abuse, abuse of others, ablisam, death, brainwashing, objectifying people (more in a militaristic way), discrimination(in many contexts).
Spoilers under the cut for some parts of Project moon’s lore. Each headcanon uses They\Them pronouns. And each of the Yuu’s are only based off of each charter to give me more creative freedom.
I will be using the term wing a lot, and feather. To put it simply a wing is a mega corporation that controls a part of a city. It’s a bit more complicated than that but it works for the writing I’m doing. A feather is what id referred to as an employee. It’s a reference to the wing motif used commonly with these mega corporations. The employees are the “feathers” that let the wings “fly”. Lastly, the Limbus Company is not a wing.
Yuri

Quotes: “ep! Don't do that!” “I don't want to hurt you! S-so don't get closer.” “don't touch my gauze!” “don't you dare say you’ve suffered! You think that pity party gives you the right to hurt people! That doesn't mean a thing! I've suffered more than all of you combined so shut up!”
as a former feather of a fallen wing. Yuu never expected to have to find a job other than the one they had before. As a result Yuu had a lot of expectations put on them working for a wing. Their job had the threat of death every day yet that was fine since they made enough to live a very comfortable life, that was before the wing fell. Yuu then had to turn to fixer work in order to even have a house. Yuu has suffered more than all of the twisted wonderland characters combined. Through adversity though they've come out into this new world.
Yuu’s weapon of choice is the first of City technology to make it into twisted wonderland… (it took this long for one of the city’s weapons to find its way in twisted wonderland?) a red glowing sword. It’s highly likely that this is a sort of plasma blade. Using city technology shows need assistance in combat considering Yuu is also only a grade 8 fixer. Yuu relies heavily on technology. In order to stand a chance in a fight.
Yuu’s eye it’s missing, Yuu actually looks very beat up, but it's not just all bruises, some of those bandages are infect hiding scars. Yuu will practically beg any who tries to take them off to not do it. Most of the time people don't push Yuu’s limits, since Yuu makes each and every time very clear that it’s their boundary. No one is allowed to push it. When people do push Yuu’s boundary Yuu tends to snap. Yuu goes off about how they have had it good, while they have suffered and pushing a traumatized person’s boundaries is just wrong.
Favorite student is Riddle hands down. After the whole incident with book one and Riddle's character development the two had gotten really close. Both are red heads. Both had a lot of expectations put on them. Yuu having helped beat Riddle was a sour spot for a while, but Riddle grew to see Yuu as an older sibling. Riddle can’t help but be protective of Yuu. especially since they both have shared issues with Floyed.
Least favorite student is Floyd. Shrimpy works very well with Yuu. Floyd was right on the mark with this one. Yuu is skittery and scared of everything. The red hair works too well with shrimp in general too. Yuu HATES Floyd. Floyd is the only student who doesn't respect Yuu boundaries. Making him the on-sight runaway. Yuu doesn't want to have to deal with the repercussions of having to explain the horrors of their home universe to someone like Floyd. Who just wouldn't understand what Yuu’s “home life" would be like.
effie
Quotes: “and I thought you were “grate mages” but all I see are blundering buffoons.” “Come now you didn’t think I wouldn't have a plan did you?” “My acting didn't fool you too. You couldn't be stupid enough to fall for it too would you?” “I do miss one person from my old world… but she’s probably holding her own.”
Yuu works for limbus company clarence team. More specifically the before team. as such Yuu is extremely skilled in scouting, espionage, information gathering, and acting. This makes Yuu very confident, and in some cases even judgmental of some of the students. Yuu did have a partner with their work, but Yuu insist that their partner could keep their own. Yuu always has a comeback for every sort of insult thrown at them.
Yuu’s Weapon of choice is another of the city’s technologies. A golden baton, looking closer there is exposed wiring. Yuu’s never really had to use their weapon because of their skills. But when asked Yuu admits that it would probably hurt a lot considering it’s a shock baton. Yuu’s use of the city’s technology shows that Yuu doesn't have the capacity to rely on their own skills in their combat. Yuu relies on out of combat tactics then in combat tactics. Yuu’s not an amazing fighter.
Yuu looks away often when asked about their old world. Yuu worked for a company who treated as disposeable. Yuu finds this world as a sort of heaven. Yuu’s made the choice they didn't want to go back, and shuts down any talk about their previous world and life. They tend to throw excuses and say “why talk about a Place I’ll never see again?”. It’s clear that Yuu doesn't want to talk about their past and snooping isn't exactly easy.
Effie’s Favorite student Jamil. Sometimes people get one confused with the other. They look and act similar as well. There's mutual respect between the two, although Jamil holds a bit of jealousy towards Yuu. Yuu holds the thing Jamil wants the most freedom, but at the very least Yuu doesn't take it for granted. Jamil is also the only holder of information about Yuu’s previous world. Yuu was in a very similar situation as Jamil, albeit Yuu’s job was extremely different. their employer never gave them true freedom like Jamil.
Least favorite student : that darn Azul won't stop annoying Yuu about working for him! Couple that with the Tweels following Azul practically everywhere and Yuu cannot catch a break. It's basically one for one with Jamil. Which doesn't help the comparison between the two. Yuu's reason for constantly rejecting Azul though is quite different. Yuu doesn't want to be held back anymore. Yuu wants to run and explore the world, taking everything at their own pace. And Azul’s work just doesn't allow that. Working for someone like Azul is not Yuu inteton in this world. Yuu had enough corrupt business for one lifetime.
Saude
“Please make sure to go over the plan thoroughly.” “I make contingencies in case something goes wrong, but knowing you. You’ll mess it up somehow.” “It's fine your reaction to my facade only made the lie seem more believable. Your foolishness only made the plan go smoother.” “I do miss one person… but they're dead. I can't weep for someone no longer here now can I?”
Yuu works for limbus company clarence team. More specifically the before team. as such Yuu is extremely skilled in scouting, espionage, information gathering, and acting. (Is anyone else getting deja vu?) Yet Yuu is somewhat humble, only judging people with concealed insults. Yuu knows what they're doing and doing it well. Yuu slips by any people insult with backhanded complaints, and double meanings to everything they say. Only the most perceptive of students catch Yuu’s insults.
Yuu’s weapon of choice is a gun. Which is odd since guns are extremely taxed and bullets cost a fortune. So Yuu has to be very confident in their aiming, timing, and stealth skills. Since bullets are easily blocked, dodged, and destroyed. The city has made guns almost impossible to use; only complete idiots or skilled marksmen use them.
Yuu has elected to stay in twisted wonderland. They have nothing left for them in their world. What little they would have is gone since their coworker died. Yuu’s elected to stay to have a better future and live for the both of them. Their old work partner would want that for them and Yuu’s confidant in that knowledge. This world is like heaven, Yuu is sure that their friend is looking down from their own heaven at them. Enjoying the life he couldn't have. Not that Yuu goes telling people about their old world. Yuu’s world is a secret that the students of night raven college are still trying to find information on.
Favorite student: Vil and Yuu get along just fine. Vil is also one of the only students to call Yuu out on their concealed insults. While using his own to keep Yuu’s ego in check. The two often have playful banter. It's not a big shock when Rook was found staking them one day. Yuu tends to keep their appearance just fine. They're average at best though so there's no comparison at who’s the better looking between the two. Vil appreciates the conversation though. Vil even holds information about Yuu’s previous world. Not that he’ll tell anyone his lips are sealed. He understands why Yuu keeps their world quiet.
Least favorite student : Azul leave the before team alone. Azul is much more persistent about getting Yuu to work for him since Yuu tends to let him down easy. Yuu is annoyed at this fact and has told Azul off before. Yet Azul never relents. It’s maddening actually the only thing Yuu can do is just try to deny Azul as often as possible. Yet Yuu never get out of the habit of letting Azul off easy. Don't take it as Yuu liking Azul in some way. Yuu just hasn't kicked the habit of concealing their disapproval. Yuu just can't live their life properly while bogged down by corrupt business. Yuu wants to live their life both for their former partner and themself.
Effie & Saude
(Effie will be known as Yuffie, and Saude will be known as Yaude.)
“‘Really it’s not that hard to follow a simple plan.’ we even outlined the important parts.” “‘We're well aware our plan is flawless.’ So try to stick to it please?” “‘you really fell for our act?’ well at least your shock made it more believable.” “‘Why talk about our old world?’ it’s not like it’s important.”
Prepare for trouble. And make it double. Both Yuu’s have come to twisted wonderland. And both are here to stay, both have no intention of going back. Both use extremely honed skills and both will keep any ego in check. Though Yaude is the preferred one to be insulted by because they at least conceal their insults. Yuffie has no intention of being subtle though so getting an ego check is guaranteed if you make a mistake around them. The two are a match made in heaven; their skills work perfectly together and have such matching personalities. Some students have even confused them for siblings, but the two are really just good friends.
If you think that their concealed past would come to light if they were together, you're sorely mistaken. The two are even more tight lipped then they would be individually, and can cover for each other's mistakes. Each slip up is “an inside joke.” or “an old fairy tale.” different world, different rules. Yet the two know that there's going to be one day when one of them makes too big of a slip up, and the other cannot cover for them. Both fear the day, but know their charade cannot go on forever. All it takes is one contradiction for all the little slip ups to come into question. So for now there isn't even a secret for the students to wonder about.
For each student the two are basically a win button. If you get one of the two Yuu’s on your side. The other will follow, making your scheme almost guaranteed to succeed. The two have become school-wide legends for their planning and forward thought. Making many students only dream of the two assisting them. Each calculation is perfect, every act is perfect, a contingency for every hiccup that may happen. Their legend has only boosted their own ability to perform what feels like magic to the ordinary person. Yet the two are confirmed to be magicless, and the two themself say their previous line of work required these skills. So it brings in what kind of work they had before they came to night raven college.
Ace and Deuce are the only people who consistently have the Yuu’s on their side. If Ace has a prank he’s been cooking up you know Yuffie had improved upon it. If you see Deuce with full marks, you just know Yaude helped him pull an all nighter. It’s scary how the two first years have both Yuu’s to back them up no matter what. Some students are so caught up in Yuu's magical planning abilities. Some forget that Ace is seen talking to Yaude about card tricks. Or Deuce carrying heavy boxes for Yuffie when they ordered some equipment for their next plan. When people realize that Ace, Deuce, Yuffie, and Yaude are friends. Yuu’s consent backing whatever minor idea the two first years have become clear as day. It's the Yuus way of thanking Ace and Deuce for their continued friendship.
Azul wants those two magical planners working for him yesterday! Individually the two are smart, together they're magic. After so many failed attempts Azul knows that he cannot be the one to ask. So it’s become the Tweels job to headhunt the Yuu’s. So seeing Yuffie try and outrun Floyd to prevent getting the wind knocked out of them is common. Not as common as Yaude’s conversations with Jade, each one a mind game to make the other slip up. Jade has failed every time. Yet even with the avantages sometimes Yuffie accidentally runs Yaude’s way while Yaude is locked in a mind game. Those are practically the only time students of nightraven have seen a plan go wrong. It ended with Yuffie running into Yaude making the two end up on the floor confused and tired. The Tweels took full advantage of the moment. Yet the Yuu’s stayed strong and wiggled their way out of that situation somehow. That day marked the first unexpected incident the two had not planned for. One day the Yuus look on and laugh about.
Kormer

“my name is Yuu I am a humanitarian who loves purity and the one who grips.” “If you need help I’m willing to assist you.” “my opinion on magic as some who has none. Useless, I can do anything just fine as a human without any.” “... I love humanity.”
Yuu is completely normal. Gets along with students very well. Although Yuu tends to keep to themself they have a small group of people whom they consider friends. Yuu is very accepting and willing to help many students with small things, but often can tell when people are trying to take advantage of their kindness. Not everyone is given help and Yuu is clearly selective of who they help, but people wonder what their requirements are.
Most people only think that hammer and nails are only good for construction. Yet Yuu proves every time that they can be a deadly combo when in the right… freakishly strong hands. Ok so Yuu has pinned a guy with nails after throwing them and hitting them with their hammer. There is some energy lost on the impact with the hammer so, imagen what they could do at close range. No one wants to find out, and no one is worried because Yuu is too kind to ever hurt anyone.
Yuu is extremely smart. Excelling in classes where others failed miserably. It's such a shame Yuu doesn't have magic. They could have made an excellent mage, a kind one too. Yuu fights off overblot with such skill and tactical prowess you sometimes forget that nails can do serious damage to the person. Only that certain overblot student has gone to the infirmary because of damage done by nails. Odd, yet people who look into it often disregard it at the same time. Yuu’s just a bit too strong and some over blots have better magic then others. So why was Riddle fine? Didn't he lose use of his unique magic? Wouldn't it have been useless since Yuu doesn’t have any magic?
It’s a mystery who Yuu’s favorite student is since Yuu keeps blowing off the question. Often giveing confusing answers or just reintroducing themself with the whole “my name is Yuu..” bit. No one can get a read on who yuu likes. Is it Ace and Deuce? The three hang out a lot. Is it sliver who Yuu can be seen carrying to class. Is it Vil who Yuu sings the praises of. Rook and Yuu talk a lot. Hack Yuu’s been seen playing games with Idia late at night. Jamil always has a helping hand when it comes to cooking, though Yuu only knows how to boil water. Yuu gets the perfect angle when it comes to taking photos for Cater. Do I need to go on?
Yet it took one minor inconspicuous student to connect all the dots. Human, all the students Yuu helps, talks to, or even just interacts with in general are human. Then the student sees the harsh glares Yuu gives the Tweels. The scoffs at Leons for sleeping in the garden when silver has done the same. The stranded smile when talking to Malleus. Yuu hates anyone, not human. Beast men, merpeople, fey, anyone. The same student who connected all the dots confronted Yuu about their problem. Leona sighed, that student was a smart one too. It’s a shame the hunter got to them first. Every time the two’s eyes meet Leona just feels the “your next” coming from Yuu. he’s suffered injuries from that hammer of theirs once already. Yuu stands against all that the king of beasts stood for. There is no equality with Yuu, only humanity, and Leona hates them for it.

Yuu holds the same ideals as Kromer, they do not hide their messed up view. Yuu has attacked students for no other reason than they are not human Yuu nearly had the cops called on them as well. Yuu doesn't hide their behavior, Yuu hides behind being a hammer to be used by the one who grips. Every time someone yells at Yuu they just stand there taking it. Not feeling anything with the insults hurled at them. Yuu doesn't care they’ve been a hammer for as long as they remember so why change now?
Yuu fights with a nail fitting for a hammer. Yuu has gravely injured many students with their nails. Every time being fended off with magic. Yuu fights with no regard for their own well being, often having parts for their body missing after each attempt to purify a sinner. Yet every time Yuu seems to be as good as new after sleeping. For you see Yuu’s true weapon is the first singularity to make it into twisted wonderland. K corp’s hp ampules are constantly being pumped into Yuu’s body making Yuu practically unkillable. Their body heals at a rate that if any proper life threatening damage is done to them it will be as if Yuu took no damage, sometimes they run out of this healing drug, but for some reason it replenishes after twelve o'clock exactly. Yuu’s checked.
Most students avoid Yuu human or not. Yuu is dangerous, it doesn't help that Yuu has never taken off that creepy helmet that covers their whole head.. there's no telling who Yuu will attack next. Yuu’s isolation will eventually end in a metal breakdown. Yuu will start to question who they are. Will question what their role is now. Being a hammer doesn't work anymore. Are there ideals right? Are humans inherently superior? Yuu’s been stopped at every chance they have at attacking other people. Are the inhuman people? Is Yuu even human?
Yuu arrived in twisted wonderland a year before the story began becoming a sort of ghost story on campus. Ace and Deuce took a test of courage to spend a night at the old Ramshackle dorm. Grim had introduced the two to Yuu. Ace and Deuce had snuck out to hang out with Yuu every night. One day Ace Realized, why sneak out? they could just visit Yuu on their brakes. Yuu’s become unstable there in the process of questioning everything they’ve known. So it’s natural that Yuu finds comfort in the two idiots that just keep coming back to there residence.
Leona knows Yuu’s still alive. Leona was attacked by Yuu, the scariest moment of his life. All he could do was panic, Yuu is definitely a hunter who fears no injury. Most hunters hide Yuu doesn't, Leona hates that he respects Yuu, considering they stand against all the king of the beasts stand for. If Yuu were just a decent person Leona could truly respect Yuu.
