Aytekin Tank is the founder of Jotform, an automation enthusiast, and an author. Founded in 2006, Jotform is the pioneering WYSIWYG online form builder, which has grown to serve over 25 million users worldwide and employs a team of more than 650. In 2016, Entrepreneur Magazine named Jotform one of the “Best Privately-Owned Companies in America.”

As CEO, he’s proud to lead the company’s ongoing growth and development, with an annual growth rate of over 50 percent and a commitment to introducing cutting-edge features and integrations.

In addition to his role as CEO, Aytekin is a productivity and automation advocate and recently authored the WSJ bestselling book “Automate Your Busywork.”

Jotform was one of the first WYSIWYG online form builders. What inspired you to create Jotform back in 2006, and how did you validate the need for it in the market?

The idea for Jotform came when I was working as a developer for a New York media company. One of my responsibilities was creating online forms from scratch. It was tedious and redundant, and never left me feeling particularly inspired. It was also time-consuming. At a certain point, I thought to myself: there has to be a faster, more efficient way. So I started moonlighting as a solopreneur—building my online form startup on nights and weekends and clocking a 9-to-5 every weekday. 

As for validating the idea, Jotform was inspired by a frustration that I was experiencing. I figured that anyone in my role—working as a developer for any organization—would greatly benefit from it. I began with a freemium product to test out the waters. Then, as I realized people were willing to pay for it, I developed a paid version as well. I decided I’d wait to quit my day job until my startup earnings equaled my salary. In the summer of 2005, I turned in my resignation and went all in on Jotform. 

You bootstrapped Jotform and grew it into a company serving 25 million users. What were the biggest challenges you faced in the early years, and how did you overcome them?

In the early years—and please keep in mind, this was well before the rise of AI—my biggest challenge was making time for the bigger-picture thinking necessary to take my company to the next level. Busywork, like emails, scheduling, and everyday administrative tasks, were monopolizing my schedule and quite frankly, left me feeling drained at the end of the day. I felt like I was never doing enough, and at the same time, I was running on empty. It was a real conundrum. Worst of all, I knew we were missing opportunities to offer our users adjacent products and services that could make their lives easier. 

When I started looking for automation solutions in my own daily processes, it was a real watershed moment—for myself and the business. It didn’t change the substance of my work—it transformed my approach. Instead of trying to accomplish as many tasks as possible on my to-do list, my approach began with identifying redundant, time-consuming tasks that I could automate. Then, I found myself with more time for work that felt meaningful—like strategizing how to roll out new products and break into new markets. Not only that, I had more time to rest, which has been critical for long-term, sustainable growth.

How has the evolution of no-code and automation tools influenced Jotform’s product development and vision over the years?

The number of no-code and automation tools on the market has skyrocketed. It’s to the point where if you’re not on board with the automation revolution, you’re doing a disservice to your company and/or career. But one thing that has served Jotform is our internal automation-first mindset. On an enterprise and individual level, we’re always looking for new ways to automate manual tasks—in other words, we’re looking to make our own work lives easier. And that speaks to our core mission—automating online forms and collaboration tools to make our users’ lives easier, and continually looking for new ways to do so. In a sense, we’ve practiced what we preach since the onset of automation. 

Jotform is launching its AI Agents on February 25, 2025. Can you give us an overview of this new product and the problems it aims to solve?

We’re really excited to offer this new product to our users. I think it will transform how people work. Essentially, Jotform AI Agents will help Jotform users create online forms and accomplish goals requiring multiple steps. For example, instead of sending someone an event registration form, you send them a phone number. They call and provide the necessary information by talking to an AI agent that understands natural language—so the person doesn’t have to stick to a rigid script. For its part, the AI agent isn’t just filling out the form, but it’s also updating the company’s internal records, answering the customer’s questions, and more. Importantly, an AI agent can take the next steps based on its own reasoning and decision-making, reducing the need for human input. And the best part: it doesn’t need rest or vacation time—it’s on call 24/7. 

How do Jotform AI Agents differ from other AI-powered chatbots and automation tools on the market?

For starters, Jotform AI Agents, like most agents, are more dynamic and autonomous. Their behaviors and actions aren’t conscripted. They’re reasoning, making decisions, executing tasks, and learning as they go—all on their own. To break it down a bit further, a chatbot responds to a simple decision tree with scripted responses. It must stay within its scope. An AI agent, on the other hand, can reason and act autonomously, making complex decisions about novel issues, accessing information across the business,  and completing tasks accordingly. Google has compared AI agents to a chef—planning recipes, gathering ingredients, developing dishes, and tweaking as they go. In that case, a chatbot is more like a line cook following predetermined recipes.

Businesses often struggle with customer service automation. How do Jotform AI Agents ensure a more “friendly” and human-like interaction?

In our testing, we’ve actually found that users prefer AI Agent interactions for various reasons, the most obvious being the speed of response and round-the-clock availability. But interestingly, people also seem less inhibited when speaking with AI customer service agents. They’re not self-conscious about asking seemingly silly questions. They’re not worried about asking the same question repeatedly until they truly understand something. In a sense, they’re more likely to get the help and clarity they need. We’ve found that customers care more about efficiently getting the help they need than exchanging pleasantries, especially if it’s an issue that can be resolved relatively quickly.

Will users be able to customize and train their AI Agents to fit specific business needs, or will they follow pre-set workflows?

Yes. We’re rolling out thousands of AI agents for a vast array of businesses and roles—from customer support and sales AI agents to tattoo studio and school administrator AI agents. For its part, a business can interact with its AI agent in real time to refine its responses and improve its knowledge base. For example, by adding relevant URLs, documents, and frequently asked questions, all intending to ensure agents provide accurate and helpful information. One way that agents differ from generative AI is their capacity to retain information from past interactions. This enables them to train themselves as well, offering a more personalized customer experience with each engagement. Finally, training an AI agent is intuitive and flexible—no coding experience is required. 

You recently wrote about how AI Agents are transforming early-stage entrepreneurship. If you were starting Jotform today, how would AI agents have changed your approach?

When I started my business, I was pretty adamant about not accepting outside funding. I was confident in my idea, but I also felt that in order to build a business with staying power, I had to grow it organically. Going the VC-funded route may have skewed the perception of Jotform’s validity. If I were starting Jotform today, I would have even more reason to follow the bootstrap route. As I’ve written, AI agents offer early-stage entrepreneurs so many ways to automate routine, administrative tasks and focus on improving their products and scaling their businesses. 

So, to answer your question, I don’t think AI agents would have changed my approach, but I can imagine I would have scaled faster—and still not taken outstanding funding. 

You’ve written extensively about automation, including in your book Automate Your Busywork. How do you personally use AI Agents or automation tools to manage your daily tasks as a CEO?

When it comes to my daily workload, I begin with an automation-first approach—if there’s an AI-powered tool to accomplish a task that doesn’t need my personal attention, I’m probably using some version of it. I use AI Agents and automation tools for scheduling, brainstorming, tightening up my daily workflows, meetings, and more. Between time saved and impact boosted, the effects of automation are compounded. Consider meetings: instead of spending half an hour preparing the agenda, an hour in the meeting (where your attention is jumping between conversations and note-taking), then preparing a recap and drafting follow-up emails, an AI agent can tackle all of the meeting-related tasks and enable you to fully focus on the actual conversations. It’s a no-brainer.

What advice would you give to startups and small businesses looking to integrate AI into their workflows but unsure where to begin?

If I were to give startups and small businesses one piece of advice, it would be to monitor the latest AI tools, and carve out time for experimenting with them and incorporating them into your daily workflows to automate as many manual processes as possible. It may require building some slack into your schedule, but you will recapture that time and so much more once you begin automating and delegating to AI agents. But maybe the most important change will be your energy: instead of feeling frazzled by your constantly growing to-do list, you’ll have space and time to work on more meaningful tasks that leave you energized—the kinds of things that remind you why you threw your hat into the entrepreneurial ring in the first place.

Having just finished Watchmen, I think it's interesting to note how Scion serves as an inverted Doctor Manhattan figure. Manhattan's arc involves him attempting to remain connected to his humanity despite his powers making that pretty much impossible, until his connections with other people are manipulated to make him abandon humanity altogether by the end of the story.

Meanwhile, Scion starts out completely detached to humanity before bootstrapping together a human avatar just similar enough to feel aimlessness over the cycle being broken, continuing with him connecting with Kevin Norton, who gives him a purpose to work towards then leaves him, mirroring Eden leaving him purposeless after her death (I read Scion killing Behemoth, but then not killing any of the other Endbringers despite being directed to, as not him just following Kevin's directions, but rather a result of Scion being genuinely upset over Kevin leaving him with Lisette, in a sort of pre-Gold Morning - killing Behemoth was the equivalent of an emotional outburst - and the first time he really let his emotions get in the way of the smooth operation of the cycle.) Then, by the end of the book, his dissatisfaction and aimlessness are manipulated to make him throw a temper tantrum, at the most human he's ever been.

At the same time, both of them are responsible in one way or another for their setting's respective Greater-Good-Moral-Blackhole Conspiracy, with Scion's upcoming apocalypse being the root cause for Cauldron's existence and Ozymandias' Squid Plan being the result of the massively heightened nuclear tensions that sprung from Doctor Manhattan's existence as a US agent causing the USA to massively overextend themselves, develop an culture of invincibility and completely ignore detente with the Soviet Union, which made nuclear conflict practically unavoidable - even if Manhattan hadn't gone to Mars, it's made a point that he couldn't stop all the missiles in a full exchange; him staying might have delayed nuclear war, but it would have come nonetheless.

Even just on a visual level, they both have statuesque bodies that are entirely a nonhuman color (blue and gold), but while Manhattan started off wearing full outfits and slowly lost clothing as he grew distant, culminating in him being totally naked, Scion showed up naked and acquired clothing along with his first human connection.

A Close Reading of Viktor's 'ascended' Form

Disclaimer: These are very jumbled thoughts but I've been trying to articulate this for a while so I'm just baring it to the public flaws and all.

I am being dead serious when I say that Melvik is a lens of viewing that serves to recentre Mel as a major character and reassert her value in the hextech trio dynamic. I will be utilsing this lens to analyse Viktor's choice to make his 'perfected' beings carry Mel's attributes.

Immediately, I will preface by saying, that although I read Jayce and Viktor's relationship as romantic, this choice has nothing to do with Jayce, at least, not in relation to feelings of romantic jealousy or romantic insecurity.

So, what does it mean when Viktor wears Mel's white and gold? I think it shows that he views Mel as the epitome of Piltover priivilege and the personification of the social barrier he could not supercede through hard work and picking himself up by his own bootstraps.

The scene above where Mel seems to be singularly be imploring Jayce to militarise Hextech as defensive action is essential to understanding why Viktor views her this way.

In this sequence, Mel is originally conversing with Viktor and Jayce on an equal physical level until she presents her ideal plan of action then she stands straight and focuses more on convincing Jayce rather than Viktor. This is not an attempt to be cruel or malicious, though it very well be an expression of her irritation because in Mel's eyes Viktor's reasonable protest seems like a juvenile outburst. As a Noxian and a Medarda Mel is accustomed to war and bloodshed she does not want the carnage of such an event to bring Piltover to ruin. However, she is also painstakingly aware that losing a war would be a death sentence. The stakes are life and death, and I believe based on what I understand of Mel's character that she would not attempt to bypass Viktor's opposition in more normal circumstances. She respects him to an extent but not more than she respects her position, her legacy and not more than she fears the consequences of losing a war.

Additionally, I view the way she stands and directs attention at Jayce as a demonstration of how she is by nature of the social system always above him. That she and Jayce, are classist as is everyone conditioned and socialised in this system, and for them as citizens of Piltover, as members of the bourgeoisie, and the council their dismissal of Viktor is not that active of a choice, its a reflex, its a manifestation of their biases. Which is terrible in its own right. Viktor discovers in this scene, that Jayce can and will go over his head despite hextech being a joint creation because his social positioning is just higher than his is. It always was and it always will be. These are unchangeable factors and immovable dynamics.

That is to say, that I think Mel's show of power in this scene, her long-term investment in hextech as well as very likely witnessing her political maneuvers from a distance during his time as Heimerdinger's assistant has cemented Mel in Viktor's mind as the paragon of Piltover privilege.

I like to imagine this reaction to Mel's powers "the arcane stirs within you" as a twisted delight. Magic is a natural force, its wild and uncharted and its presence in Mel has this undoing effect, it perplexes her, to use it she physically exerts herself, it makes her bare her teeth. It's a side of Mel, Viktor would have never witnessed, in her struggle with this he finds a glimmer of kindredness that briefly enthralls him.

When he creates his ideal form, a white and gold, sleek and slim faceless robot with a gentle elegent gait and manner of movement and is seeking to conform the entire world to it, know that Viktor in his mind is equalising both himself and the rest of the world to what he considers the apex of privilege, therefore ridding the world of social hierarchy, difference and struggle.

The grand irony of this act is that he ends up bypassing the autonomy of literally everyone by subjecting them to this much like Mel bypassed him. Meaning, he hasn't rid the world of this hierarchy at all, he's put all these people beneath him and robbed them of choice and freedom.

Separate Melvik spiel:

Mel and Viktor's inherent relationship to each other through nature, disposition and as narrative foils is just so meticulous I can no longer genuinely view Arcane as a text without noticing the absence of an established personal dynamic between them. The groundwork for a romance is embedded in the text, their relation to each other is already by itself canonically quite romantic, all of their qualities and attributes are either contrasting or is eerily similar, everything about them serves to say something about the other within the constraints of the Arcane narrative (I doubt this will continue in game and in the follow up series). His admiration of her is tainted by his resentfulness at her position and the way she's wielded it. So many characters in media have kissed for less than that.

Pavlo Pikulin, Founder & CEO of Deus Robotics – Interview Series

Pavlo Pikulin is the founder and CEO of Deus Robotics, which has developed an AI platform that connects and enhances the intelligence of warehouse robots from any manufacturer. Can you share your journey in AI and robotics, and what inspired you to start Deus Robotics?

It all began with my dad, who’s always been a tech enthusiast. Even before I was born, he got me a personal computer — pretty rare in my hometown back in 1989.

When I was five, I wrote my first computer program. The idea of giving a task to a machine and watching it execute was absolutely fascinating to me.

At seven, I sold my first website for $20. Soon after, I started building and selling computers. By thirteen, I had written a program to bypass a captcha in a computer game, which later evolved into an automatic number-plate recognition system.

By fifteen, I was convinced that the future was all about robotics.

This realization set my path towards robotics and AI. However, at that age, I didn’t have the means to start my own robotics company, so I took a bit of a detour. At nineteen, I launched a game studio which grew into a global company with 60 million users worldwide. By 2021, we had 700 employees, and some of our games became the top downloads in their genre in the US.

But robotics was always on my mind and in my heart. I’ve always believed the world would be better if robots could handle all the tough, mundane, or dangerous tasks. By late 2017, I had saved enough to finally bootstrap my own robotics company and make that vision a reality.

It took me a year to do all the research in robotics I needed to start. After that, I gathered a team of incredibly talented engineers and programmers — some old friends, others new faces — and we launched Deus Robotics in early 2019. This past summer, Deus Robotics was shortlisted for Logistics UK’s Logistics Awards, Robotics & Automation Awards, and Supply Chain Excellence Awards USA.

What lessons did you carry over from your 15 years in the gaming industry to robotics and AI?

Working on games has given me valuable experience in many key areas, and it’s been rewarding to see how these skills apply to robotics.

Virtual Worlds for Robotics

Virtual worlds are a game-changer in robotics, offering a quicker and more efficient way to test ideas without waiting months for a hardware prototype. Instead of spending time and resources on physical prototypes, you can experiment in a virtual environment. Creating these virtual worlds is a lot like designing a game, where robots interact with their surroundings — this is where my game development experience really comes in handy.

Algorithm Transfer

When we were developing algorithms for robot path planning, as a team, we tapped into our experience from creating similar algorithms in games for character navigation. In our strategy games, hundreds of characters had to navigate through cities with roads and buildings — just like robots in our systems. This made transferring our path-planning expertise to robotics feel seamless and natural.

Complex Software and Analytics

Robots, much like games, are built on complex software. Developing a world-class game involves creating secure payment systems, social features like chat and groups, competitive elements, and a detailed virtual world with countless mechanics. One of our games had over 300 functional windows — more than you’d find in most banking apps! Games also handle massive loads, with millions or even billions of users performing countless actions, and this experience provides valuable insights for warehouse robotics.

Another crucial aspect is analytics. In games, we had to quickly and efficiently analyze user actions, managing high volumes of data. The same is true for robots, which continuously send vast amounts of data that need robust processing and analysis systems. Additionally, creating AI agents in games to engage players is similar to programming robots, as both involve crafting intelligent, responsive behavior.

In short, if you can build and manage a game development team, you’ve got what it takes to lead a robotics team as well.

How has your role in the Artificial Intelligence Committee under Ukraine’s Ministry of Digital Transformation influenced your work at Deus Robotics?

The Committee’s goal is to advise government authorities on AI, including robotics. I joined to provide expertise specifically in robotics and to consult on government requests. We’re also focused on education, regulations, and pilot AI projects in Ukraine. 

Through my work with the Committee, Deus Robotics found a way to expand our passion for advancing robotics in Ukraine beyond just warehouse automation. This allows us to make a broader impact.

Could you explain the unique AI brain developed by Deus Robotics and how it enhances the intelligence of warehouse robots?

Our robot control software, dubbed AI brain, includes key technologies:

1. On-Robot Systems:

A system that collects and analyzes data from all the robot’s sensors, helping it understand its surroundings, determine its location, and make decisions.

A control system that manages all robot mechanisms, such as manipulators, motors, lidars, and cameras, to execute the robot’s decisions.

A 3D recognition system that identifies obstacles using 3D cameras and a lidar recognition system that interprets what the LIDAR detects.

2. Centralized Management Platform:

Our AI platform connects all robots via Wi-Fi, coordinating their actions and enabling centralized communication.

In warehouses, our centralized system is crucial. It prevents collisions by tracking each robot’s exact location in real-time, allowing them to move quickly and safely.

This centralized system also integrates seamlessly with the warehouse management system, making it a key advantage and streamlining robot management.

Besides being connected, our robots are also getting smarter. Thanks to the adapters for different robots, our system can integrate robots from various manufacturers, enabling them to share information and coordinate tasks.

Previously, robots could only coordinate with other robots from the same manufacturer. Now, they can exchange data and work together across different brands.

What sets Deus Robotics apart from other companies in the warehouse automation industry?

Unlike other warehouse robotics companies, we’ve developed the heart of what makes robots truly effective: their brain. Our AI-powered brain connects with robots from any manufacturer, including our own, turning even the simplest robots into smarter, more capable machines. This is especially important because, typically, robots from different manufacturers don’t play well together. Plus, when robots from different providers can’t connect or be centrally managed, it complicates operations and limits your ability to scale.

How does Lidar technology enhance the navigation capabilities of your AGVs compared to traditional methods?

When our robot spots a floor tag, it navigates with pinpoint accuracy — within 1mm. But when the tag isn’t in view, accuracy can drop to around 20mm. That’s where LIDAR comes in, helping to keep navigation precise even between markers.

LIDAR adds another layer of information, which we combine with data from tags and gyroscopes. Each source gives us different insights with varying accuracy. Our specialized system merges all these inputs to pinpoint the robot’s position with high precision. The more accurate the data, the better the robot navigates, and precise positioning is key to smooth and effective robot movement.

Could you describe the role and benefits of your Robot as a Service (RaaS) and Software as a Service (SaaS) models for businesses?

Buying robots requires significant capital investment, leading to a payback period of one to three years. This also ties up the client’s operating funds and increases capital expenses.

RaaS (Robots as a Service) is a game-changer for businesses. It eliminates the need for capital investment, relying instead on operational expenses. The payback begins in the first month, thanks to the immediate boost in productivity. Instead of needing 2-5 times more people to achieve the same productivity, robots enhance the efficiency of existing staff—at a lower cost than hiring additional workers.

Plus, RaaS reduces risk. There’s no need to freeze investments, and expenses shift from CAPEX to OPEX.

What are the advantages of QR Code Navigation in AGVs, and how does it compare to Lidar?

Automated guided vehicles (AGVs) follow fixed routes, navigating via floor tags instead of LIDAR, and can’t deviate from their path. In contrast, our autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) use 3D LIDAR scans for flexible navigation without relying on floor markers.

In what ways do Deus Robotics’ solutions address the current challenges faced by warehouse logistics and the 3PL industry?

Currently, we offer a solution that transports goods from point A to point B, which is especially appealing to fulfillment centers. However, the need to move goods exists in any warehouse — whether it’s in manufacturing, healthcare, automotive, or retail. In the future, we plan to expand our product line to include robots that can handle tasks like packing, loading and unloading trucks, unpacking, and picking. We’re already working closely with robot manufacturers to integrate their products into our lineup.

Another challenge we’re addressing to make warehouses more efficient is providing a unified system for managing robots — a single integration, management, and enhancement point. Our clients don’t need to deal with multiple robot platforms. They only need to integrate with us once and can then use any robots they choose. While our current selection of robots is limited (we have 15 models to date), we’re constantly working to expand it.

What advancements do you foresee in the integration of AI and robotics in warehouse automation over the next 5-10 years?

One of the biggest challenges we face is figuring out the best way to automate each warehouse. Even though warehouses perform similar tasks, they differ in the details — like processes, staff, the types of goods they handle, and their goals. Some aim for maximum efficiency, others for cost-effectiveness. Planning the right automation solution and setting up the best business processes takes a lot of time and effort from experts. I’m convinced that AI will soon help us design warehouse automation in just seconds, making the process much smoother and more efficient.

Another exciting development is the rise of specialized robots designed for specific tasks. While the first robots were built for general use, as automation grows, we’ll see more robots tailored to unique needs. For example, inventory robots are just starting to appear since most warehouses only need one or two.

Humanoid robots are also on the horizon. These versatile robots will be able to handle tasks much like humans, thanks to advances in AI.

AI is also getting better at helping people with their tasks, like smarter voice assistants that can offer guidance. Plus, AI can optimize warehouse operations by analyzing data and improving efficiency. With access to digital warehouse data, AI can quickly identify and fix issues, making everything run more smoothly.

Looking at the bigger picture, AI will also improve how different warehouses work together, along with suppliers and logistics partners. This includes better scheduling, moving goods efficiently, and predicting what will be needed next.

All in all, AI and robotics are not just tools for automation — they’re the keys to unlocking a smarter, more connected future for warehouses and beyond.

I think the thing that shocks me the most about the discourse, if you can even call it that, around book Alicent vs show Alicent, is the idea that people think book Alicent had full autonomy over all her choices and she wasn’t a “victim” like show Alicent.

Now first, I put victim in quotations bc the way people who do not like her have almost bastardized that word. Alicent is a victim, and those things (rape, abuse, neglect) were done to her. That says everything about the men who did that do her and nothing about her. But people are hellbent on throwing Alicent, a woman in a violently patriarchal environment, being victimized back at people as if it is moral flaw of hers. Which is just terribly ironic bc the same folks who say Alicent “did it to herself” or “deserves what she is getting” also seem to think the crux of the story isn’t about generational trauma catching up with itself, how far people will go for power, or even how all girls and women are harmed - albeit to different degrees. But more the fact that Rhaenyra is the only woman to be harmed - and the only harm done is not getting the throne easily. Those same people wouldn’t be caught dead admitting that Rhaenyra is also a victim in the way they shit on Alicent for being. From the father who sets her up fail, to the baby daddy that’s been eyeing her since she was barely 18, to the uncle that grooms her. It takes away from the fantasy projected onto Rhaenyra if she too is surrounded by men that use her and she never escapes that.

Second, it’s funny how F&B gets heralded by some as this exploration of how history is skewed depending on who is telling it. But people can’t read between the lines (you honestly don’t even have to do that much work) with book Alicent. Showing 14 year old Alicent being preyed on, 16 year old Alicent being pregnant with her second child, and 18 year old Alicent being raped is somehow the show needlessly making Alicent a victim. But reading about a 13 year old bathing, dressing, and taking care of a king who mistakes her for the daughter he abused and neglected, and then that same girl, at 18, marrying another king that killed his previous child bride is just girl bossism on book Alicent’s part?

People hate conceptualizing the idea that (even book) Alicent is caught in patriarchal trappings bc to some that takes away from Rhaenyra’s plight…. Bc they can’t wrap their heads around several women *gasp* all going through hardships, and that ultimately people will respond to trauma differently depending on tools/knowledge they have at their disposal. Alicent neither being gleefully evil nor picking herself up by her bootstraps to somehow end years of patriarchal violence is not the neat box they want for her.
