Reagan didn't know what to expect when JR said he was getting her a co-leader, scratch that she knew exactly what to expect- everyone liking them better than her and her getting replaced. Surprisingly, that was not what happened. It almost did, but then Brett called her and begged for help and was actually just a really nice guy. He did something no one else had been able to do, made her feel appreciated.  

Okay, look, elephant in the room, she's never had the best life. Between a dad who was more focused on science and abusive when he was paying attention to her and a mom who only cared about Reagan when she wanted to point out something wrong with her, Reagan was doomed from the start. And it wasn't like work was any better. JR was just a horrible person in general and her teammates were some of the most incompetent people she's ever met. Everyone else avoided her whenever they could. So, yeah, everyone in her life kinda sucked. 

That was why Brett had been such a breath of fresh air and probably the best person to ever exist. She didn't like using words like 'best friend' but if she had to describe him that would be it. He was the person who got her best, which wasn't exactly an easy thing to do, and she liked to think she knew him pretty well. He was the only one able to see through her walls, her masks, and tried to bring out the side of her that didn't hide behind her trauma. And goddamn that was fucking terrifying. But it turned out to be the thing she needed the most. And even without all that he was just fun to be around. 

When he was his real self that was. But she quickly found out he felt the most at ease around her and used that to her advantage, his really, suppression wasn't good- she knew that well. So she saw his abrasive side the most, the sides of him that weren't the overly-cheery, extreme people pleaser he felt he had to be for everyone else and it was something she really enjoyed. 

Plus, while he wasn't the most interesting person she's ever met he was the most real. Yeah, he had a lot of trauma, but that only made him more real. It was so easy for people like them to be fake but he couldn't even lie convincingly and always called her out when she was going too far. He was the kindest person in the world, always there when someone needed anything with so much care that couldn't come close to being feigned. But he was also learning how to put his foot down, how to say no when people were asking for too much. He was more socially adept than anyone she knew yet was okay with hanging out just the two of them. He was the weirdest person in the world, and she loved it. 

She loved everything about him. Which- was very strange for her, but how could she not? He was always there for her, even when everyone else bailed she could count on him to stick by her. When everyone tried to deceive her he was nothing but honest. When everyone was shooting her down he was nothing but encouraging. And when all she wanted to do was scream and curse out the world he was there with a coffee and dumb joke that made her smile no matter how much she didn't want to. How could she think he was any less than the greatest person ever?

Reagan did know what she was expecting when JR said he was getting her a co-leader, but what she got was so much better.
