summary: Your current job as a travelling housesitter has taken you to many places, some strange and many wonderful. When the acquisition of a new client takes you to Korea for three months, you wonder if your self-esteem can survive being around so many other-worldly looking people. Also, not to be paranoid or anything, but maybeperhaps you’re being stalked by the same seven strangers? They’re pretty loud and always surrounded by a tonne of people, so you write it off the first few times.
But this shit is getting excessive, chile. And annoying…
Rhetorical question, but what lies at the end of a rainbow? You hope that it’s a pot of gold, but with the way that your luck has soured, it might just be seven short(er than you), rowdy leprechauns ready to flip your world sideways…
Chapter 1
She was going on her first social outing in Korea (the source of the K-Dramas that she loved so much that she ended up learning the language), and ___ would make damn sure that she looked her best during it.
Rounding her top lip out by lining over her cupid’s bow then filling the lip in, ___ took her concealer and ensured that her lip-liner wasn’t a crooked mess. That task done, she swabbed a glob of lipgloss across her lips, rubbed them together, then applied her fake moles. The cool mist of setting spray wafted over her face.
___ smiled at herself in the mirror, happy with her appearance and checking to make sure that nothing was in her teeth. Her 18mm minks blinked back at her, lightly brushing the tops of her blushed cheeks. She hadn’t done The Most™ this time, as her revered 25mms were still preserved within their cases, but her face was still Beat For The Gods™.
Her ripped, highwaisted jeans pinched a bit at the fatty flesh that peeked between her belt and the edge of her cropped top, but she had long-since grown used to this sight. In fact, she had even come to love that part of herself. She was jiggly in places, and that was a-okay.
As she still had some time before she had to leave to catch her train, she decided to kill it by locating the window that let the most sunlight in and taking pictures there. It wasn’t golden hour, as it was one in the afternoon, but the lighting was just right, regardless. The contrast between the cool, sophisticated tones of her room and the browns in her clothing and skin made for some immaculate self portraits.
___ had long since learned to become her own photographer, as her height was a bit too tall for any modeling agencies to want to even consider her. Not to mention that her status as a black woman made opportunities just that much harder for her to procure. Yet, even with years of experience, self-modeling was still a bit awkward for her, and that translated in quite a few of the pictures that she had taken.
In the end, after she had ensured that the house keys and her wallet were in her purse and that Mickey had enough food and water to tide his cute little self over while she was gone, many of her pictures had been deleted in between her stepping foot out of the house and her ride to Times Square Mall.
She was so invested in her phone screen on the train that she didn’t even notice the many stares that she gathered. From her large, beautiful afro to the mile-long length of her shapely legs, many native Koreans took in the rich, alluring aura of the black woman for the first time in their lives. The fact that her face was set in it’s usual intimidating expression was the only thing that put them all off of bothering her.
She was going to this mall mainly to see the world’s largest cinema screen, but the arcades and plentiful high-class stores also appealed (respectively) to her childish and bougie sides. Even though ___ knew that she was gonna do a whole lotta window shopping (her expensive tastes and her income didn’t correlate), she was quite ready to blow a lot of cash during her entire 3 month stay here.
Stepping off of the train and into the subway, ___ had never felt as small and alone as she did then, surrounded by all of these people who didn’t look like her. Not for the first time since she’s started the whole ‘cross-country housesitter’ stint, ___ wished that she had a friend with her. Alas, she was currently chasing a bag, and since it comes with all of the free travel and awesome cultural immersion, something had to be compromised. In this case, ___ would just have to try to make friends while she was here, but she’s not really all that hopeful of that outcome, what with her slight social anxiety and all.
Speaking of which, it was currently flaring up as she squinted at the signs, trying to navigate herself through the crush and towards the upper mall. Somehow, she ended up outside and in front of the large, intimidating buildings made of glass. The mall was so big that it had to be split into Gates, like at the airport. Taking note of the gate number that she was entering and hoping that she’d be able to find her way back to the train station from there, ___ stumbled through the spinning doors and immediately went about locating a map.
The noise inside was deafening, as it tended to be in malls. While the majority of the people inside were Korean, foreigners lulled about as well. It made ___ feel a little less alien, though the way that she towered over most of them subtracted a bit from that. Subconsciously, she started sucking her stomach in, which let up a bit on the pressure from her jeans and shifted the gait of her walk into something less relaxed and more confident.
___’s first task was to find where the cinema was, as her movie was scheduled in an hour and a bit and she didn’t want to miss it by looking for it last minute. Luckily, the maps were in abundance and pretty easy to read. She decided to spend her time exploring the place by slowly making her way up the five floors. The first store that she went into had a strange, yet forgettable, name. It was a large department store with many women and children strolling along the walkways. Tables and shelves, almost overflowing with neat stacks of books, formed little islands. Between them, the polished, blank screens of electronic devices shone. The store didn’t really have anything that piqued her interest, so she ended up leaving pretty quickly.
This was the trend for the rest of her leisurely walk around two of the five floors that the mall had. On the third, something finally caught her attention— a small cafe tucked around the corner of the many cosmetic stores on the floor.
Walking in felt like stepping into a cozy, surreal painting. The scent of freshly grounded coffee beans wafted through the air and intertwined with the sweet aroma of baked pastries. Dark wood set in warm-toned cushioning curled around the shop, creating such a warm, homely atmosphere that ___ felt like she had stepped into an entirely different world. Already, several people were seated with cups of their own beverages and plates full of cakes and other desserts. Some were patiently waiting in line, face-masks pulled up and glasses perched on noses. A few people lounged in their respective areas with books in hand. Some were seated at the small dining tables, typing away on their laptops. Others chatted quietly with one another.
Somehow, the hustle and bustle of mall life grew hushed and muted in this small, quiet corner.
The soft crinkling of pages being turned accompanied ___ on her way to the line. Already, she could taste the sweet, milky flavor of her boba contrasting with the sharp coffee of tapioca pearls.
Across the room, dark eyes trailed her figure. Her wardrobe of choice and the rich tones of her skin made her fit seamlessly into the shop. As hard as he tried to pull his eyes away from the stone-faced beauty and back to his book, Namjoon found that he couldn’t. He didn’t know if it was the swing of her hips or the bounce of her voluminous hair that kept drawing his attention, but he knew that he had to kill whatever thoughts he was having, and quickly.
Simply put, Namjoon didn’t have the time to go fraternizing with a virtual stranger. He had seen many beautiful women in his time as an idol travelling the world, and he knew better than anyone how time consuming even a simple one night stand could be. Before he even approached someone, he had to think about how any leaked information could damage the group’s reputation. And then he had to think about preventative measures to make sure anything like that didn’t happen, and actually carry those measures out. Even though most of the legal stuff like NDA’s and other contracts were handled by the company, sasaengs were still everywhere. All it took was one picture of his naked, turned back, and they would be on him and his brothers like a particularly stealthy group of leeches.
Not to mention, Namjoon was not a man with many earthly desires— at least, not anymore. He preferred to spend his time out in nature or in museums, either with or without a book, in search of a higher understanding of himself and of consciousness. Time was very precious to idols as busy as BTS because very rarely did they ever get any outside of the judging lenses of cameras or people. How the other members wanted to spend their free time was up to them, but Namjoon would prefer to spend his either in silence, or with his brothers in silence.
And yet, his gaze continued to stray towards ___ as she moved forward in line. The music sweetly crooning from his airpods didn’t help the matter any farther, either. If anything, it set his own atmosphere to ‘romance’, rather than the initial ‘chill and relaxed’ he was going for.
Now at the front, she visibly towered over the cashier, long limbed and slightly awkward in the way that only tall people could be.
“H-how can I help you today, ma’am?” The dark-haired cashier stuttered, looking up at her warily and carefully avoiding her eyes. While she had served many foreigners in her years working at the mall, blank faced people were always a wild card. Sometimes they were extremely rude. Other times, they were perfectly polite. She could never tell with them, unfortunately, and, with the way ___’s face already punted her into the ‘scary’ category, her not inconsiderable height added to the cashier’s wariness as well.
However, all it took was one smile in greeting to crack her icy demeanor into thousands of tiny, little pieces. The sharp slant of her dark eyes, relaxed into narrowed slits that mirrored aloofness and displeasure, curved into merry arcs framed by lashes that brushed the flush of her cheeks. Her full lips, naturally slightly tilted down and shimmering with gloss, stretched upwards into a sweet smile. The plumpness in her cheeks swelled at their highest points beneath her eyes, transforming her face into something soft and honeyed, like dough.
Suddenly, ___ was too adorable to look away from.
“One bubble tea (originally flavored) and…” here, ___’s eyes swept across the cafe, briefly glancing over Namjoon (who’s table only had a single book, his airpods case, and his phone on it) in search of a snack to eat, “a slice of whatever that guy over there is eating, please.” ___’s voice, at a slightly lower register than usual as a result of disuse, gently filtered into Namjoon’s area. She had pointed in the direction of a nearby table with two young men calmly chatting with each other. Only one had an actual plate with food on it; the other had a single cookie loosely clutched in his hand. A wrapper divided the table between them. The cake in question was multilayered and looked as if each fluffy partition would dissolve satisfyingly on the tongue.
The cashier, with relief, went about her job of ringing ___ up and making sure that the order was received by the barista. ___ held the straps of her purse tightly to stop her hands from shaking too badly, feeling anxious being surrounded by strangers in such a private environment. She moved to where she could pick her order up and waited in the smaller line there, pulling out her phone and pretending to be busy so that people didn’t think that she was a total loser with no friends.
She felt the familiar prickling in her eyes that occurred whenever she felt embarrassed or overwhelmed, absentmindedly scrolling through her photo gallery and mentally trying to will the emotion away. It felt like everyone was watching her, which made her feel very exposed and self-conscious. She had to remind herself, over and over again as she briefly glanced around the vicinity, that everyone else was too caught up in their own lives to be paying her any attention.
Except for Kim Namjoon, who’s identity remained concealed behind his large, dark shades and fitted, dark mask. He considered just leaving the little sanctuary that he had carved out for himself here, as he kept getting distracted with ___ being directly within his line of sight. And, if he was being honest with himself, it was only a matter of time before a fan recognized him (disguise and all, with how often some of them watched him).
Still, Namjoon found himself glued to his seat, watching as ___ received the tray with her order and glanced around to find an unoccupied table. The only vacancies small enough to seat just one person without it looking weird were... in the area that he had secluded himself within.
She took slow, slightly hesitant steps in his direction, carefully keeping her back straight and her hands as steady as she could get them in case her purse slid down from her shoulder and jostled the tray.
Who the hell wears shades indoors? ___ asked herself as she passed Namjoon and settled into a seat behind him. Wait, that’s kinda insensitive. He could be bli— then, she peeped the edges of the whole ass book in his hands and stopped her train of thought. What are the chances that that book is in braille, though?
Not wanting to be offensive, even in her own thoughts, ___ stopped thinking entirely to reorganize herself at the table. She perched her purse in her lap and dug her phone out of it’s confines, rooting around for her airpods while she was at it. If she was gonna be alone in this large ass mall, she was at least gonna be alone in style and rhythm.
Her airpod case had a cute little sunflower pattern on it. She stuck both of her small, stickered airpods into her ears and started her music, pulling her camera app up and snapping a quick picture of her snack before taking her first bite.
Her eyes almost rolled back at the taste.
I just know that if this shop was any closer to the house, my fat ass would be in this bitch every day.
The cake slice was gone with a quickness. If she wasn’t saving her stomach until she got to the food court, ___ would have definitely gone to order another. She pushed the tray with the dishes into the empty space on the table and grabbed her boba. The mellow flavor worked wonders to relax her as she scrolled through her photo gallery, editing the pictures that she had approved of earlier on the train.
Her little bubble of contented solitude wavered when Namjoon shifted into a stretch, popping his tensed joints and rolling his ankles around. He was still trying to recover from her scent’s surprise attack on his nose. When she had walked past him, it was like a bomb of cocoa butter and coconut went off, blending almost sinfully with the rich aroma of coffee and the sweet undercurrent of baked bread.
This guy is giving me major creeper vibes, ___’s thoughts went back to the stranger again after his movement caught her eye. Even when her attention went back to fixing the lighting in one of her photos, some of her focus was still on him.
Of course, there wasn’t a day in Namjoon’s life when he didn’t do something embarrassing as a result of his own clumsiness. Overconfident in the integrity of his chair’s balance while he leaned back and stretched to his fullest extent, he was in for quite the shock when he tipped over with a mighty crash!
His book went soaring through the air behind him, sliding to a stop at ___’s foot.
___, who has just placed one of her airpods on the table as she dug through her purse to better listen out for the jingling of her small makeup bag, jumped in surprise, jostling the table and sending her airpod flying in Namjoon’s direction.
It hit him in the head and knocked his own airpod out of his ear, as well. One rolled to the floor and skittered away. The other got lost somewhere between his face and his clothes. His glasses slid down the bridge of his nose and stopped awkwardly at his top lip, stuck.
The quiet shop went even quieter. People’s heads began turning in their direction.
Namjoon froze, and slowly, his face began to fill with red. A man dressed nondescriptly in black stuck his head in from the cafe entrance, looking for the source of the sudden noise. He began making his way towards his charge once he got a proper grasp on the situation, pulling his walkie-talkie out and silently mummering into it: “All clear, here. Just Kim-ssi being clumsy. Have medics on stand-by, just in case he or anyone else is hurt.”
Before, ___ had only been able to see the broad expanse of his back and his biceps shifting as he flipped to a new page. Now, with half of his face exposed and his eyes staring straight up at her in mortified shock, ___… still couldn’t really say much about his features. He was upside down and still pretty concealed, after all. What patches of skin she could see were quickly turning deeper and deeper shades of vermillion. It was weirdly... cute.
“Um… are you okay, hun?” ___ asked with a pointed, concerned look. Her voice, still low and smooth like velvet, ran subtle waves across Namjoon’s ears. She placed her bag aside and slipped out of her seat, reaching down to grab the book at her feet and walking over to where he was lying prone on the ground.
By the time she had reached him to help him up, his bodyguard had as well. He attempted to block her from going any further as he pulled him up to his feet, but ___ was simply too tall for that to be effective. Namjoon felt himself beginning to curl inwards with all the eyes still on him, but easily suppressed the reflex with his years of 1) being a professional at concealing his emotions, and 2) embarrassing himself on camera.
“Haha, sorry guys. I’m a bit clumsy sometimes.” He bowed to the shop and rubbed the back of his neck apologetically.
“Kim-ssi, are you hurt anywhere?” The bodyguard asked. It took ___ a bit to remember that people were usually addressed by their last names in East Asia, as she had really questioned if the guy in front of her was really named ‘Kim.’
“No, really— that was a pretty loud fall.” She peeked out from above the manager’s head, still holding his book. The only thing on her mind was returning it and retrieving her airpod once he affirmed that he was a-okay.
“Oh— y-yeah, I’m okay. I-I’m used to stuff like this so I can’t really feel it anymore? Sorry about all the noise, haha.” He gave an awkward little laugh (—and probably an awkward little smile, but that remained unseen), shyly rubbing his neck again and making an aborted motion to cover his mouth with his hands before he remembered that it was already covered with a tiny strip of cloth. Inwardly, he cursed himself for stuttering. That was one of the largest tells of nervousness!
___ didn’t really pay his flustered fluttering any mind, however. She slipped around the man standing in front of her and held his book out towards him with a toothy grin. “I felt that. I stub this one toe of mine so often that I don’t even flinch anymore. Anyways, here’s your book.”
Her closer proximity suddenly made Namjoon realize that he had to look up to meet her eyes, and it made his increasingly rattled behavior even worse. To think that he had just begun to calm down, too...
“A-ah, thanks.” Even his fingertips were red as he reached out to accept his book back, but he could luckily just play that off as a slight stinging left over from his date with the floor. “I think something hit me in the head earlier, too, and it knocked my airpod straight out of my ear.”
___’s eyes widened as she subconsciously reached up to touch the ear that still had music lowly puttering into it. “I’m so sorry!” Here, she gave a quick, shallow bow. “I think that was actually my airpod! The sudden noise shocked me so badly that I accidentally knocked it off of my table!” Suddenly, it was her turn to look embarrassed.
Okay, I’m ready to leave. That’s enough embarrassing yourself for one day, girl! She thought to herself, already beginning to scour the floors for her missing appliance.
“This is slightly awkward to ask, but have you seen it since it hit you? It has a little sunflower sticker on—”
When she turned her attention back to him, she found his bodyguard already beginning to usher him in the direction of the exit, uncaring that the tiny little music device that she spent an arm and a leg on was still missing.
“Okay, that’s just fucking rude.” ___ muttered in English, dropping her formal tone and proper pronunciation as she righted the weird guy’s upturned chair and continued her search alone. Luckily, the small dab of white was easily distinguished against the dark, hard-wood flooring of the cafe. She’d have to clean it thoroughly when she got back to the house. For now, she’d have to settle with the unbalanced feeling of having just one in her ear. Slightly irritating, but doable.
Unbeknownst to her, Namjoon’s keen hearing caught her judgemental words and the ignominy almost crushed him. How many times had he embarrassed himself in front of the pretty girl, already??? Too many times to count.
He’d never live it down if the guys got wind of this, but there was no bigger gossip than a Bighit staff member. Sometime within the week, his business would be someone’s morning discussion. He reached up to adjust his dark gray beanie, pulling the edges over his ears to hide the reddening tips.
Tangled in the excess fabric of his high necked shirt, a single airpod with a sunflower sticker hid.

This article takes away your fears and uncovers what you should and should not be doing to learn JavaScript in a much faster and effective way.
Before we get to the actual tips, let’s revisit how we learn.
The general approach to learning JavaScript or other programming languages is either you go from the top to bottom or the reverse.
What do I mean?
Some of us learn the fundamentals of a subject before proceeding to the next phase. Likewise, some others learn by creating a complete project (while following a step-by-step video or guide) without knowing the fundamentals.
While each of these methods has its pros and cons, we will not discuss that in this article. It’s fine if either of the methods works for you.
However, here, I will show you the simple tips, if followed rigorously will not only fast track your learning, but also help you retain what you have learned.
Good. Let’s go to the first tip.
Set a goal and pick what to learn
JavaScript is broad with a lot of branches. For this, it is ideal that you pick one tech and leave out other technologies outside of that.
But if you are just getting started, making this decision would be tough because it is hard to figure out where to start. In this case, you’ll need to follow a well-structured curriculum. More on that later.
The emphasis here is to learn to choose a JavaScript tech and focus on that ALONE.
How? JavaScript, as you may know, is used both in the client-side (i.e frontend) and also as a server-side programming language in the backend. And each of these sides has different technologies associated with them.
In the frontend, for instance, we use Vanilla JavaScript (which is a plain JavaScript without the addition of libraries), JavaScript frontend frameworks like React, Angular, Vue etc. Likewise, In the backend, we use a type of JavaScript called Node.js and its Express.js framework.
As you can see, there are a lot of things to learn.
So in order not to get overwhelmed and bored easily, you should only focus on one thing and leave out all other things outside of that.
Now, here comes the question, where should you start from?
This takes us to the next tip.
Follow a well-structured curriculum
Always avoid learning anything that comes your way. You have to follow a structured syllabus. If you attend a boot camp, you’d most likely follow a standard curriculum while learning. But being a self-taught developer, it’s your duty to find a standard structure to guide you through.
This ensures that you are not leaving out anything you should know on the subject.
One of my favorite methods is to take a look at the freeCodeCamp. They have a well-defined structure you can follow to be on the right path. If you want to take it further, you can also look at some of the online learning platforms like Udemy or Coursera for a structured syllabus. Mind you, the essence of this step is to have something to guide you throughout your learning. Once you have a structured curriculum, get started and learn.
But… don’t get stuck in the tutorial hell. What do I mean? Let’s find out in the next tip.
Start with the fundamentals but don’t do an endless tutorial (simply get started with projects)
This step is very crucial as it decides your learning curve. You don’t want to be carried away with the lots of tutorials out there because you may get stuck in the tutorial hell if not careful.
This is a strange place where you unconsciously do lots of tutorials especially on a subject and never stop. You discover that no matter what, you always feel you are not good enough to start a real-world project.
Trust me, I’ve been there. So try to avoid it as the pit is so deep.
What is the way out?
Never read more than two materials or course on a subject (a good one is better). The essence is to understand the fundamentals. Once you do, discard it as soon as possible and start learning the rest on the job through projects.
Mind you, at the very beginning – i.e while studying the fundamentals, learn in such a way that you implement every bit of information you read. In other words, you must not proceed unless you put the knowledge into practice.
Now, you have a grasp of the basics. What next?
Start building stuff even if nothing works at first. You’ll discover that you learn more in the process than you would by following tutorials.
Though, it’s kind of scary because you might feel you are not good enough to start a project. Trust me, you are good to go. Just take the bold step and you will never regret it.
You can start by finding an open-source project on GitHub; scrutinize the source code to see how things are connected. This has a whole lot of benefit as you’ll get to see how every topics and sub-topics are connected to form a complete solution/ project.
This way, you get to appreciate what you have been learning. Thus having the urge to learn more. From there, you can start to think of a feature you can code. Start coding by writing what you know and get stuck. That is expected!
Next, you’d need to find your way out.
Knowing how to search for solutions
Trust me, if you spend years upon years following tutorials either by watching videos or reading guides, you will still come across problems if you are working on projects.
knowing how to come up with solutions is one of the great skills you’d need.
As said earlier, it is expected you get stuck while working on projects. So it’s your responsibility to find a solution to any problem you encountered.
Most of the time, Google and Stack Overflow are your friends. But you should always start with Google and see the options you have. You’ll be amazed how much knowledge you easily acquire doing this.
Get used to reading the documentation
Have you ever asked yourself that “why is so and so, so good in what they do”? The secret is that most of them get used to reading the documentation and as such have a grasp of the subject matter.
Just like every product comes with a manual, dev technologies and frameworks comes with their documentation. Though, it might be technical especially for beginners which is very understandable. But trust me, the earlier you are comfortable reading the doc, the better you are getting to the pick of your dev journey.
The advantage here is that you’ll get firsthand information from the creator which increases your knowledge and confidence on the subject.

Sometimes during your journey as a developer, you might have wondered if what you are doing is worth it. This is because it’s taken more time than you think to get things done. It’s completely normal. Don’t give up. Be yourself and learn at your own pace but be consistent.

The smell of car exhaust and garbage hit me as soon as I stepped off the bus.
The diner I was supposed to meet the guard at was only about a block away, but the air swirling through the streets signaled that rain was imminent. I had no idea what to expect from this meeting, so I wanted to arrive early. At the very least, I didn’t want to be caught in the storm with all my files in my leather bag.
I was having a hard time getting Arthur’s case out of my head. I couldn’t believe I was going along with his request not to make a plea deal. Somewhere in my mind, I was uncomfortable with the thought of him spending the rest of his life in jail. Legally, practically, I knew it would be the “right” thing — but I pitied him, and I resented myself for it. A small part of me hoped I would see his face when a not guilty verdict was read, and it hurt to realize that would never happen. I told myself the ache in my chest was from thinking about my inevitably doomed career after losing the case.
I was close to my destination now. The neon lights of the diner lit up half the street, and as I approached, I noticed the smell of frying oil wafting through the air.
A bell chimed brightly above my head as I opened the door.
Please seat yourselves, read a sign in the entryway. There were a few customers along the bar area and a few by the windows on the right in booths, but the diner was mostly empty. Everyone spoke in hushed tones.
My shoes were painfully loud against the black and white tile floor as I walked to the end of the row of booths to the left. I chose a seat facing the door, as far from the entrance as I could get.
Soon enough, a waitress came by the table. She was older, probably in her mid-50s, and had a weary look about her despite her kind demeanor.
“What can I get for you, darling?” she asked.
“Just a coffee, please,” I requested. “No cream, no sugar.”
“Coming right up. Long day?” she inquired with a kind smile.
“You could say that,” I replied, scratching my cheek.
“I’ll go ahead and bring you that coffee,” the waitress told me. “Just let me know if there’s anything else I can get for you.”
It had now begun to rain outside, and the dark street looked like wet tar under the gleam of the street lights. Drops of water slowly ran down the window.
The bells on the diner door chimed as a man entered, soaking wet from the rain. When he took off his hood, I saw that it was the guard I was supposed to meet. I nervously fingered the envelope of cash hidden in my purse as he walked over to the booth.
“I see you managed to stay dry on your way here,” he commented, taking off his jacket and placing it on the seat. His clothes underneath were still relatively dry, and he sat down across from me, brushing off his shirt.
“I got here a few minutes before you did,” I said simply. “It hadn’t started raining yet.”
“You know, I don’t think we’ve had proper introductions yet. David Friedman,” he introduced.
“Winter Martin,” I replied, shaking his hand stiffly.
“I believe you were bringing something for me.”
As I was reaching into my purse for the envelope, the waitress returned with my coffee. I nearly knocked everything onto the floor trying to take my hand out of the bag.
“Here you are,” the waitress said, placing the cup in front of me as if nothing were out of the ordinary.
“Thank you,” I managed to choke out.
“Anything for you, dear?” she asked David pleasantly.
“Just a coffee for me, if you wouldn’t mind,” he requested. “Thanks, Peggy.”
She smiled and left us again, and I hurriedly reached into my purse again for the envelope of cash.
“Keep it,” David ordered. I paused, brows furrowed in confusion.
“I said you can keep the money,” he repeated. “There’s another favor I need from you.”
“What do you want?” I asked suspiciously, closing my bag. I slid my coffee cup toward me with both hands.
“Well, it’s not so much a favor as a request,” he clarified. “I wanted to talk to you about this whole thing with the Joker.”
“I’m not going to talk about an ongoing case.”
He waved his hand dismissively. “No, no, I know that. I want to talk about him.”
“I’m not going to talk about my client while—”
“Jesus, Martin, will you just listen to me? You need to get him off those charges however you can.”
I blinked.
“One more coffee for you, dear,” came the voice of our waitress as she returned to our corner of the diner. “There’s cream and sugar for you on the table if you want any.”
“Thanks, Peggy, you’re a doll,” David said. He took the steaming hot cup from her with both hands and gingerly set it on the table, wincing at the heat.
I watched the woman return to the other side of the restaurant before I spoke again.
“What are you trying to insinuate here?” I demanded in a low voice.
“Nothing you haven’t already done.”
I wanted to tell him that whatever he was suggesting, I wouldn’t do it, but I’d given up any moral high ground earlier today when I’d offered him a bribe.
“This Joker guy, he means something to a lot of people in this city,” David stressed. “Beyond that, do you know what it would do if he gets thrown in jail? Or even worse, if they kill him? There’ll be riots out here for months.”
“I don’t mean to disappoint, but I’m not here on some moral crusade,” I told him. “I want to get this case over with and move on with my life.”
David shook his head. “You don’t have that luxury anymore, Martin. You’re a public figure now, whether you want it or not. Whatever you do, it’s going to mean something to people out there. This case matters.”
“I didn’t sign up for this,” I lamented, putting my head in my hands.
“Yeah, you did,” David countered. “What, did you think you were going to be defending saints in this job? You can’t honestly sit there and tell me you didn’t know what you were getting into. You signed up to be a public defender in Gotham, and now that you’re getting some dirty looks on the subway, you want to back out.”
“That’s not it,” I muttered.
David took a loud sip of his coffee.
“I don’t want to be a hero,” I insisted. “I don’t want the whole world watching me. I don’t… I don’t even know what I’m doing. Everyone talks about me like I’m the murderer when I’m just playing my part in a legal proceeding, and they hate me for it.”
“Did you ever bother to think that some people might look up to you?”
I sighed.
“You’re probably the only attorney in this city who wouldn’t hand him straight over to the prosecution,” David reminded me. “You’re idealistic. You defend him because you know someone has to. The people you look straight through on your way to work, the ones that just seem like part of the scenery — they all idolize you. Not only are you defending a figure they support, but you’re showing them that there’s still people in this system who would treat them fairly. You’re the symbol of real, even-handed justice in Gotham.”
I looked up from my half-empty cup. “I don’t want to be a symbol.”
“It’s way too late for that now, Martin.”

I got home especially late that night, and I stayed up even later.
My small apartment was usually quite neat. Tonight, though, papers and books littered the kitchen table. I sat hunched over my notepad, biting the inside of my lip as I agonized over my research. Several files were precariously stacked across from me on the only other chair at the table. The clock on the wall read just past 2:30. My head had begun to hurt shortly after I’d left the diner, and now it felt like my skull was being slowly crushed in a vice.
I had one day before Arthur’s arraignment — it usually would have occurred only a day or two after his arrest, but it had been almost three weeks already. The entire legal system had slowed to a crawl in response to all the rioting, and the jails were overflowing. The arraignment would be an absolute circus.
Reluctantly admitting that I wasn’t going to get much more productive work done, I tossed my pen down onto the table and shuffled off to my bedroom. My body ached.
As I laid in bed, cold sheets wrapped tightly around my body, an overwhelming sense of loneliness crept up on me. My feet were tangled in a soft blanket underneath the sheets, but I didn’t feel cozy. My small apartment was cold and empty, and I was insignificant and alone. I briefly wondered how Arthur felt in his cell at night, and my heart sank.
I wrapped my arms around an extra pillow and pulled it close to my chest.
“It’s okay,” I whispered into the darkness, pressing my lips to the fabric. “It’s gonna be okay.”
A lump began to build up in my throat, and my eyes burned with tears.
“Fuck,” I sobbed, pressing my face into the pillow. “I can’t do this, Arthur, I’m so sorry.”

Thank You For Existing - 2/4 Speaking Through Music series
It was senior year for Tweek and Craig, and Tweek’s fame was still growing. After his first tour, his life had been a whirlwind, but Craig’s steady, calming presence had kept him grounded enough to function. The Tweak’s had decided firmly that their son would graduate from South Park high and not tour during school. As such, his agent called frequently to see if Tweek had new songs to put out. It got to the point that Craig began answering the phone for his boyfriend, as Tweek would just scream into the receiver.
His studies took up most of his time, along with having to work at his parent’s coffee shop. They didn’t care that he was a famous musician making millions already; they needed an extra worker, and he was the best for the job. As such, the shop was always busy, people from all over the country flooding the small town to meet Tweek and have him make them coffee.
It was getting close to prom season, and Tweek was beginning to panic. He hadn’t been able to write any songs in almost a month, and his agent was breathing down his neck for something, anything.
“Craig, he wants something for people to play at proms across the country. That’s so much pressure!” he wailed one evening, curling up in his desk chair, legs tucked under his chin. His bandaged fingers pulled at his hair with one hand while the other was chewed on, Tweek glaring tiredly down at the page in front of him, covered in writing and crossed out words. His floor was littered with discarded ideas, his trashcan overflowing.
Craig sat behind him on his bed, watching him. When Tweek began to rip at his head, he got up and crossed the room, gently pulling his hands away wrapping his arms around him, locking Tweek’s arms at his sides. “Don’t hurt yourself,” he said. “I know you’re worried, but babe, people love you so much, they’ll understand that you need time off to think and live your own life.” He pressed a kiss to the top of his head and smiled when he was rewarded with a soft laugh.
“You’re right, I’m allowed to look after myself. I’m not here just to pump out song after song. I have things I want to do,” he agreed, sounding more cheerful than he had in weeks. He tilted his head back, planting a kiss of his own under Craig’s chin. “Thanks, Craig.”
Blushing, Craig stepped back. “Anyway,” he said after clearing his throat. “I came over today because I wanted to ask you to go to prom with me.”
Tweek turned his chair to look at his boyfriend, grinning at him. “I don’t know if I should say yes to such a lackluster offer,” he teased. “Aren’t these usually big deals with all kinds of stuff going into it?”
Craig shrugged, returning the look. “Not my style. I figured you’d prefer a simple offer than something extravagant, but I’m always willing to make a big deal over you.”
The other quickly shook his head. “Nah, you’re right, I do prefer this,” he said quickly. “Of course I’ll go with you, thanks for asking me.”
“Thanks for accepting my boring offer.”
Tweek snorted, then stood up. He walked to Craig and pressed his face into his chest, sighing. “Anytime.” Craig hugged him readily, enjoying the peaceful moment. This, of course, meant it was ruined quickly. Tweek’s phone began to blare a warning siren, the ringtone he had assigned his agent. Tweek groaned, falling away from the other and pulling on his hair harshly.
Craig frowned, snatching the phone up and swiping to answer. “What do you want?” he snapped in annoyance.
“Oh, it’s you. Put my client on,” the haughty voice issued, immediately grating on Craig’s nerves.
“Like fuck I will. Tell me what you want, and I’ll tell him in a way that isn’t manipulative and stress inducing,” he growled.
“Craig, it’s okay,” Tweek cut in. He looked tired, taking the phone and putting it to his ear before speaking. “What do you want now? I told you I don’t have anything.” Craig stood close by, unable to hear what was being said between the pair, but wanting to stay close in case he was needed.
“I don’t have time to do a concert,” he hissed out suddenly. “Craig is taking me to prom. God, it’s like you forget I’m a person with things I want to do myself!” His eyes were lit with fire, his exhaustion disappearing. Craig felt his heart warm as he watched, though he kept himself from smiling, knowing now was not the time.
He watched his boyfriend argue for a solid half hour, unable to tell if Tweek was winning or not. The heavy sigh he released didn’t fill him with confidence, and he touched his shoulder lightly.
“What is it, babe?” he asked.
“… He booked a concert for the night of prom,” Tweek murmured.
“What!? That’s total bullshit, he can’t do that!”
“Well, he did.” Tweek’s voice was hard, his mouth narrowing into a sliver. “And just to fuck me over, he let the school book me. So, I guess I can’t go with you, I’m going to be the fucking entertainment.”
Craig could hear the disappointment under the anger, and he allowed it to roll off him, knowing Tweek didn’t meant to snap at him. He grabbed his boyfriend’s hands, bringing them up to his lips. He kissed his fingertips and the band-aids decorating them tenderly. “Like Hell you aren’t going with me,” he said as Tweek’s face flushed red. “You’re going to enjoy your senior prom. Your agent can go suck a massive dick.”
Tweek’s face twitched as he held down a laugh, and he let out a breath, dropping his gaze to his feet. “If you say so, Craig.”

The month leading up to prom was nothing less than chaos for the young couple. A flurry of crazed planning took up most of Tweek’s mind, keeping him distracted. Two weeks before prom, Craig pulled him into his car and drove them to South Park mall.
“What are we doing here, Craig?” Tweek asked, gripping his hand as they entered the building, Craig clearly having a destination in mind.
“We need to get suits for prom,” he answered easily. “I know you like to be more casual when you perform, but it’s a formal event, so to be let in I have to wear something nicer than black jeans and a clean shirt.” He paused long enough to shoot him a smile. “You don’t have to get one if you don’t want too, but you can help me pick one.”
With a tired sigh, Tweek followed him. He was exhausted lately, his paranoia keeping him awake. The only sleep he was getting was the hour-long lunch period he had, escaping to the nurse’s office and crashing there.
Entering the store, the pair where greeted brightly, the employees rushing to be attentive to their famous customer. He smiled weakly, collapsing into a chair beside the dressing room. He only half registered Craig pulling a few suits from the racks around him, pressing a kiss into his hair, and going into a changing room. When Craig stepped out, it was an entirely different story.
Tweek sat bolt upright in his seat, his eyes wide and locked onto his boyfriend. It occurred to him he had never seen Craig dress up for anything before, but goddamn if he didn’t highly approve.
Craig turned in a circle, his arms held out at his sides. “What do you think, babe?” he asked. “Too much? Need more? I’m not much of a fashion person.”
Cursing his mouth for failing him, Tweek gestured at him dumbly and nodded in approval. Craig had chosen a dark blue suit that seemed to have silver sparkles pressed into the threads. It was barely notable until Craig moved, then the light reflected from them, making him shine. A white undershirt covered his chest, and a tie matching the suit was clipped around his neck.
“Tweek? Are you alright?” he asked in concern, hugging him gently.
“Get this,” Tweek managed to command. His mind was filling with music, and he needed to get home right away. He shuffled from foot to foot impatiently as Craig changed back and went to the counter to rent the suit.
The musician all but yanked Craig out of the mall and shoved him into the car. Craig’s worry had waned, and he instead watched the other with deep fondness, recognizing the signs of a creative mood.
He hadn’t seen Tweek have one in so long, it was an extremely welcome site. Putting the car into gear, he pulled out of the parking lot and drove them back. Arriving at the Tweak house, Tweek pecked his cheek, then leapt out, sprinting into the house and up to his room.
Bursting into the room, he threw himself at his desk, snatching a pen and clicking it open, scribbling frantically. He used pen to write his song ideas, finding pencil smeared to easily when he rushed, and he broke a much smaller number of pens compared to pencils.
His parents, used to their son’s constant alertness, went to bed and slept soundly though his screeching and rushing around, banging around on the various instruments in his room as he brought the song in his head out to the world, stopping only to jot down the notes onto the music sheets.
In the early hours of the morning, Tweek collapsed on his bed, dead asleep. His newest song was stacked neatly in the one open spot on his messy desk, unreadable to just about everyone else in the world. His mother checked on him around seven, and seeing him resting, called him off from school for the day as well as sending Craig a text to let him know where the teen would be.
Craig smiled at the message that popped up on his phone, already in the school’s parking lot. He’d known that Tweek was going to work until he finished whatever was on his mind, then collapse. It wasn’t the first time he’d done this, and it wouldn’t be the last either.

The remaining days to prom felt like someone had smashed the fast-forward button on Tweek’s life, propelling him through the days as though they didn’t exist. Lucky for him, Craig made sure to be around constantly, basically living in the Tweak house to help him prepare. The only thing Tweek had refused to be convinced to do was play the new song he had written for prom to Craig just yet.
“You’ll understand why when we’re there,” he promised, yanking his fingers through his hair in a vain attempt to fix it. “Just be patient for a little while, I promise it will be worth it.” Craig, who had asked for a sneak peek of the new song for the hundredth time, huffed and went into the bathroom to put on his suit.
Tweek felt incredibly guilty that Craig couldn’t go out to dinner with his friends beforehand, since he had to go to the community center to set up and Craig insisted on going with him. Craig did everything he could think of to assure him that there was nothing to feel bad about, he wanted to spend as much time with him as possible. Surprising him by showing up with takeout and his suit in a bag had helped. After eating, they showered and set about getting ready.
“Do I still look alright?” Craig asked, stepping out of the bathroom. Tweek’s breath caught in his throat as the sight of Dressed Up Craig entered his vision. He nodded mutely in response, watching Craig use his fingers to comb through his hair and style it slightly. Gulping, he turned away and shook himself, knowing he needed to stay focused.
They left shortly after, Tweek feeling extremely under-dressed, which he was. He had donned the same outfit he had worn for his first tour appearance, being sure to even have the same earrings in. Tweek was a deep believer in good luck, and seeing as his concert had done so well, it made sense (at least to him), to think that wearing the same outfit would cause a similar reaction. He had made one important addition, however: a warm, blue, slightly-too-big jacket was draped around him, the sleeves going down to his fingertips.
Craig thought it was the absolute cutest thing he had ever seen in his life.
Getting to the center, parents were already crowding around the entrance, though most of the teens wouldn’t arrive for another hour. This was fine by Tweek. The pair got their cheesy couple photo, Craig pulling him against him and smiling widely, managing to coax a nervous grin from his boyfriend.
Going into the building was like stepping into another world. The town had gone all out and donated massively to the high school that year; fairy lights were strung through the rafters and wrapped into designs that traveled up the walls. One side of the room had tables set up covered in white cloths, surrounded by fancy looking chairs. Center pieces sat on top of the pristine fabric, and Tweek couldn’t for the life of him figure out what the twisty gold-looking thing was supposed to be, but it was pretty all the same.
Moveable tiles had been set in place over the wooden floor boards on the half of the room not covered in seatery. Strobe lights were set up around the dance floor, and an area for the band, and Tweek, had been created between the giant speakers. Behind one of the speakers was a small table that had an AUX cord and someone’s phone for when Tweek and the helping band needed a break so the music wouldn’t have to stop for long.
The far wall had a long table set up, covered in snacks and drinks for the teens when they needed to rest and recharge.
Tweek let out a sigh and walked towards the performing area. Settling himself on the provided stool as adults rushed around to put the finishing touches on everything, he watched Craig, who had taken the table closest to him. He smiled slightly, appreciating the gesture, and Craig waved at him. They spent the time making faces at each other and giggling. Occasionally, Tweek would have to turn away to check his microphone for the sound technician, but the pair was left undisturbed for the most part.
When students began to arrive outside, someone pressed play on the phone behind the speaker and a pop song started up. Tweek’s performance would start after most of the students had arrived. Until then, he was allowed to get up and go to Craig. He did so gladly, running over to him.
Token, Clyde, Jimmy, Timmy, and Jason arrived first. Token and Clyde had come together, Token in a purple suit and red shirt, while Clyde was the opposite. Though neither Craig or Tweek were big on fashion, seeing Clyde’s outfit physically hurt them, Craig covering his eyes as Tweek pulled the hood of the jacket up to hide his face.
Clyde just laughed, enjoying their torment. Jimmy was in a yellow suit, something none of them had thought he would be able to pull off, but he did extremely well. Timmy had chosen light blue, and Jason had gone traditional with black. The three hadn’t asked anyone to go, knowing they would find someone to dance with who had come in a group like they had. If all else failed, they had no qualms just getting groovy with each other.
As students began to pour in, Tweek was called for. Craig kissed his forehead lightly, promising to hang out close to him while he performed. “This is technically the first time I’ve seen you play live,” he teased. “I’ll be watching you the whole time, so don’t worry too much.”
Tweek smiled, bid his friends goodbye, then returned to the band. The music turned off, and the band started to play, exciting the students. Many were big fans of Tweek’s music and were excited to hear him singing live.
Putting on his performing face, he smiled brightly, welcoming them all to prom before launching into a popular dance song. While he performed, Tweek kept an eye on the time. He wanted to end the dance with his new song for two reasons: one, it was a pretty easy song as far as the strain it put on his vocal cords, relaxing in a way, and a good wind up to end a long show, and two, he fully intended to embarrass Craig but didn’t want to make it impossible for him to escape. He wasn’t going to be that mean.
The dance was two hours long, and Tweek only took two breaks, and this only so the band could have a moment to rest. He himself was buzzing with energy, looking forward to Craig’s reaction.
Finally, it was nearing the end, and Tweek took the microphone from its hold and stood up, getting everyone’s attention.
“Thank you all for coming to this year’s prom, guys,” he started, pausing a moment while he was applauded. “Now, I know I haven’t released any new songs in a while, but I have something special for you tonight. I would like to perform the new song I wrote, if you’d all be willing to hear it.”
The room filled with excited chatter and the students agreed eagerly. Tweek smiled, then glanced towards Craig. “Craig, could you come up here, please?”
Craig looked around in confusion as everyone went silent, but he stood and walked to his boyfriend’s side, allowing Tweek to lead him back to the stool he had been sitting on all night. Tweek had pulled it out from its spot to the side and put in the center of the dance floor. Once Craig was seated, he grinned and kissed his cheek, eliciting squeals from some of the girls.
“I’ve had a hard time being inspired lately,” he said, “but Craig helped me out, like he always does. So, Craig, this song is for you. I’ve decided to call it, ‘Thank You For Existing’.” Craig’s cheeks turned red, but he smiled and nodded. Taking a step back, Tweek took a breath, then began.
“I got these fresh eyes, never seen you before like this…” He looked Craig up and down quickly, his eyes softening with affection. “My God, you’re beautiful.”
Craig’s eyes widened as his blush darkened. Tweek showed his love through actions more than he did words, and it was always a welcome surprise to be told something sweet.
“It’s like the first time, when we opened the door before we, got used to usual…”
Was… was Tweek talking about when they first got together? It had been an awkward shift in their dynamic from friends to lovers, but it had been a good awkward, if that even existed. The excitement of seeing one another for the first time every day hadn’t gone away, it had only grown into a routine. Craig’s mind raced as it pushed pieces into place, finding the deeper meaning in his boyfriend’s songs as he tended to do.
“It might seem superficial, mhmm… Stereotypical man… You dress up just a little and I’m like, 'Oh, damn’.” Tweek winked at him, derailing Craig’s attempts to reason through the words. It was almost ridiculous how easily Tweek was able to turn him into putty.
“So, suddenly, I’m in love with a stranger… I can’t believe he’s mine… Now all I see, is you, with fresh eyes, fresh eyes…”
As he repeated the line, the attendees began to clap in time to the beat, getting into the music.
“Appreciation… Well, it comes and it goes,” Tweek continued, giving a small shrug before moving behind his boyfriend and putting his arm around him. “But I, I’ll ride that wave with you. It’s human nature, to miss what’s under your nose 'til you, 'til you remind a fool…” He pressed a quick kiss to Craig’s jaw, then spun away as the drum picked up.
“Maybe all of this is simple… mhmm, my heart’s unconditional, yeah…” He turned back to face Craig, pointing him. “You dress up just a little and I’m like, 'Oh, damn’.”
His face felt like it was on fire, and Craig put his hands over his cheeks in a vain attempt to hide his embarrassment. If it had been anyone else, he could have flipped them off and stormed out, but… he couldn’t do that to Tweek. For sure he would need to get him back for this later though.
“If I could bottle this up, bottle, bottle this up, I would… I would bottle this up, bottle, bottle this up, I would…” Making his way back to him, Tweek leaned close to Craig’s face. “'Cause you’re gorgeous, in this moment… If I could bottle this up, I would…”
Craig threw out an arm, wrapping it around Tweek’s waste to keep him from leaving and holding him close. Even sitting, abet on a high stool, Craig was a good head taller than Tweek, not that it was stopping the singer from flustering the fuck out of him.
“So, suddenly, I’m in love with a stranger… I can’t believe he’s mine, yeah… And now all I see, is you, with fresh eyes, fresh eyes… Oooh… Oooh… Oooh…” Tweek let the microphone drop to the ground, throwing his arms around Craig’s neck as he stood on his tiptoes, smashing their lips together.
The crowd, already cheering from the song, lost their minds, screaming and whistling in approval.
Craig stood up, scooping Tweek into his arms, carrying him like a princess towards the doors of the community center. “If you were anyone else, I would be so mad,” he murmured softly. “But I seem to be unable to get mad at you, babe.”
Tweek grinned and snuggled closer to him. “I’m pretty lucky then, huh?”
“The luckiest.”

The next day, Tweek called his agent, a first for him. He had never been the one to initiate contact before. The man on the other end of the line was surprised to get the call.
“I wrote a song and showed it at prom,” Tweek informed him. “It’s entirely possible someone recorded it and put it online. If they did, I don’t care, so don’t you dare try to get it taken down or anything. I’m emailing you the file, give it to whoever it is you give it to for this stuff. If you were going to ask, I did have fun, and the post prom was the best part. Bye now.” He hung up without waiting for him to say a word. He was still a bit salty over having to work on prom night, but it hadn’t been as bad as he had thought it would be. Though to be fair, that was entirely thanks to Craig.
After leaving the dance, they had returned to Tweek’s home and both had changed into sweatpants and t-shirts, though Tweek kept Craig’s jacket. They had then joined their friends at the mall, where post prom was being held. It had been a lot of fun, and Tweek received many compliments on what everyone was sure was going to be the new top of the charts hit.
“It’s a fuckin’ bop,” Clyde told him as the group lounged in the food court. They had chosen to sit by the wall rather than at a table. Craig was leaned against it with Tweek resting on his chest, his arms around him loosely. Token was beside him, Clyde laying with his head on his lap. Jimmy was sitting against the wheel of Timmy’s chair, and Jason was stretched out on his stomach in front of them.
“Thanks, Clyde,” Tweek said, smiling slightly. “I worked hard on that song.”
“It shows,” Token put in as Clyde nodded.
“Y-Yeah, Tweek,” Jimmy said, stealing a fry from Jason’s plate. “You r-r-rea-really kick s-s-ser-se-serious ass.” Jason swatted weakly at his hand, but gave a thumbs up in agreement, too tired to say anything.
“Timmy!”
Tweek felt his heart warm, grateful to have the support of his friends. Craig’s arms tightened around him and lips pressed into his soft hair.
“You did great, honey,” Craig cooed lowly to him. “I’m so proud of you.”
Soon after, they had gone home, tired and ready for bed. Craig stayed the night, leaving once they were both awake the next day.
He couldn’t help but feel a bit bad. Tweek put so much effort into his music, had even written two songs about him of all people to show his love, and Craig felt, dare he say, inadequate?
Did Tweek understand how much he loved him? How much he cared about, respected, and flat out adored him? He knew he wasn’t the best at expressing himself, but lately he had begun to feel like he wasn’t doing enough. Maybe it was due to Tweek declaring his feelings towards him on a world stage. The entire planet had literally heard Tweek singing about his love for Craig, and Craig had no way to match that…
Or did he?
The idea took shape in his mind, and he’s eyes grew wider as he thought of a solution. Running the rest of the way home, he jumped onto his computer, opening up Discord to message his friends in their group chat. Tweek wasn’t part of it only because he didn’t trust that it wasn’t being monitored at all points.
Typing quickly, he sent out: Do u guys want 2 start a band?
