Oliver Willis at Daily Kos:
Democratic lawmakers are preparing to travel to El Salvador with the goal of securing the release of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the Maryland father who was abducted by the Trump administration and mistakenly sent to a brutal maximum security prison in the Central American nation. On Sunday, Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen sent a letter to Milena Mayorga, El Salvador’s ambassador to the United States, requesting a meeting with President Nayib Bukele to discuss the matter. “If Kilmar is not home by midweek – I plan to travel to El Salvador this week to check on his condition and discuss his release,” Van Hollen said in a statement. Rep. Maxwell Frost of Florida offered to join Van Hollen on his trip. “We must all stand as a united front against the kidnapping and illegal detention of Kilmar Abrego Garcia in El Salvador,” Frost said in a post on Bluesky. Recently elected Rep. Yassamin Ansari of Arizona said she hoped to join the delegation, as has Rep. Robert Garcia of California. While Democrats are the minority in the House and Senate, these members are using the power of their elected offices to draw attention to Garcia’s wrongful detention and possibly secure his release. Democrats have been under fire from their base for not doing enough to oppose Trump’s lawless actions since he took office in January. On Monday, at a White House appearance alongside Bukele, Trump pretended to be powerless to secure Garcia’s release. His administration has admitted in court that Garcia was wrongly deported to the notorious CECOT prison in El Salvador. Bukele also claimed he was unable to release the man and referred to him as a “terrorist threat.” Despite the Supreme Court ruling that Garcia, who is a Salvadoran citizen and legal U.S. resident, should be returned, Trump called reporters “sick people” for asking about the issue.
A group of Democrats, including Sen. Chris Van Hollen (MD) and Rep. Robert Garcia (CA), will travel to El Salvador in a bid to free the wrongly imprisoned Kilmar Ábrego García.

Before press came in — but while live feed was running on Bukele’s feed — Trump said to him: “home-growns are next. … You’re gonna need to build about 5 more places.”

Hey just a small reminder that saying "we should send elon to el salvador!" "we should send this other group to el salvador!" ITS NOT the view NEITHER of you gringos should have about this whole thing.
Because guess what? Before trump made the deal with bukele, we salvadoreans have been suffering this regime for THREE. FUCKING. YEARS. Women have been incarcerated for not accepting the advances of a cop, young people being arrested bc a neighborgh falsely accused them of belonging to a gang, community leaders who are fighting for their land have been arrested and placed with false war crimes from the civil war.
So any time I see any of yall say that "oh we should instead send XY and Z to El Salvador!" I see you minimizing this problem and, again, treating my people as not important. Hell I dont see any of you talk about how this is also GENOCIDE TO US SALVADOREANS.
I'm glad a lot of you care for the inmigrants being wrongfully detained and sent here, but I fucking despise how you all ignore my people and willfully ignore how this is much bigger than just your government capturing innocents and how once they get back its done and everything's nice again.

BREAKING— Donald Trump is now defying a 9-0 Supreme Court order to facilitate the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia back to the United States.
Today, Trump met with the President of El Salvador Nayib Bukele which they told the media that they will NOT give Kilmar Abrego Garcia (wrongly deported) back.
Trump is now claiming that because Garcia is under the jurisdiction of El Salvador, that he cannot return him even though he literally sat with the President of El Salvador today and can demand his return.
The Trump administration noted in court that Garcia was deported by mistake due to an administrative error yet they are still refusing to facilitate his return.
They accused Garcia of being a member of MS-13 which his family denies. He was falsely accused by an informant looking to lessen their prison sentence. No evidence of Garcia ever being affiliated with any gang whatsoever.
Garcia fled El Salvador in 2011 due to gang violence and was legally allowed to remain in the United States under multiple court orders as long as he made regular check ins with Immigration and Customs Enforcement
Garcia has no criminal record and is married to a US citizen which they have a 5 year old disabled child together.
The constitutional crisis has arrived and Trump is not only openly defying court orders but also a 9-0 Supreme Court Order.

Sara Boboltz at HuffPost:
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Tuesday that President Donald Trump is exploring legal pathways to “deport” U.S. citizens to El Salvador, where the administration has already arranged to house deported immigrants in a prison known for its human rights abuses.  Leavitt suggested the effort would be limited to people who have committed major crimes, but Trump has also mentioned the possibility of sending people who commit lesser offenses abroad. Any such move on the part of the Trump administration is certain to be challenged in court. It is also not clear what legal authority could be used to justify expelling U.S. citizens from their homeland. “These would be heinous, violent criminals who have broken our nation’s laws repeatedly. These are violent, repeat offenders on American streets,” Leavitt told reporters at a press briefing. “The president has said if it’s legal, right, if there is a legal pathway to do that. He’s not sure, [and] we are not sure if there is,” Leavitt continued. “It’s an idea that he has simply floated and has discussed very publicly in the effort of transparency.” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday that he “love[s]” the idea of removing U.S. citizens, adding that it would be an “honor” to send them to El Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele — an eager partner in Trump’s schemes.
White House Spokesliar Karoline Leavitt confirmed that Traitor Trump is seeking ways to send US citizens to El Salvador, and that it would be restricted to repeat violent offenders… except that such a move likely wouldn’t be restricted to just repeat violent offenders, but also political dissidents against the 47 Regime.

The Trump administration is also now claiming that Kilmar Abrego Garcia was not deported by mistake, as the Justice Department stated, but was “the right person sent to the right place.”

I do think it's a pretty slippery slope. We have to be careful and mindful of how these laws get applied. In terms of being deported, I don't think it was particularly egregious with Khalil because CUAD appears to have been receiving support from Hamas. They were also advocating for Hamas, specifically. And he was given due process, because he wasn't a citizen. You can be deported with a green card for supporting terrorism. He supported terrorism, so he got deported. This is due process, due process means following the law and that is the law. Whether or not we agree that this should be the law, is a separate argument to whether or not it is the law and I see people arguing that they didn't follow the law, when they actually did. Personally I don't agree with imprisoning anyone in a place like CECOT regardless of what they've said, even if they support Hamas, because I don't believe prisons like CECOT should exist at all. However, Ozturk's case is a lot more fucked up. She didn't appear to support terrorism, she wrote an op-ed that said Israel should be held accountable for violating international law. This is a violation of her First Amendment rights in America. I'm a Zionist and I've said the exact same thing, if I were in America I could be deported for that? That's not right. Either way, I don't agree with them being imprisoned over these things, especially not in a place like CECOT, where they won't be given any access to attorneys, and have no ability to contact the outside world. Abrego Garcia's case is also a lot more fucked up because the administration admitted that they made an error, the Supreme Court told them to fix it, and now they're refusing to even try and fix it. This is all a very slippery slope, because I don't trust when politicians make claims that they should be allowed to deport people for "Expected Beliefs." An expected belief is not a belief. It's not a stated belief. It essentially means that they can think you believe something, and deport you for this.

Here's the aforementioned constitutional crisis in a nutshell:
The Trump administration has been fighting for days against a judge’s order to return a wrongfully deported Maryland man to the United States. But this meeting in the Oval Office was the most clear example yet that Trump had no intention of returning Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia to the United States, despite the Supreme Court instructing the U.S. government to take steps to return the Salvadoran migrant. Trump and Stephen Miller essentially scoffed at the Supreme Court’s ability to direct the administration to take any action on foreign policy and made clear that if anyone was going to return Garcia to the United States, it would have to be Bukele, the Salvadoran president. Bukele rejected any notion he would return the father of three who has no criminal record.
A little refresher: the US president does not have authority to just ignore a Supreme Court ruling.
