Sydney, Melbourne

This post is fairly delayed, as I departed Melbourne last Sunday, 20th. For reasons to be explained later I was extremely tired on the way home, followed by a pretty busy schedule while in the UK. I'm writing this entry during the last 2 hours of my Singapore to Auckland flight. The journey from hell to Sydney took its funniest twist when Melbourne airport informed me that I'd actually booked my 4th, and final flight of the last 36 hours, from their smaller more remote airport, Avalon. It was also to be the airport I would fly back into, and to this day I cannot work out the point of it. I could only laugh at this information, and was lucky that JetStar agreed to put me on the next flight from the airport I was standing in, for only £30. It would have cost me ~£100 to get the taxi to Avalon in time to catch my flight. I met Madeline, my aupere of 7 years previous, near her home in Bondi, where she had generously let me stay for the next 2 nights. After a pretty awful last 3 nights, spent ill, in a cell, and on a cramped plane, it was an incredible relief to have my own room, and the ability to wash clothes. That night I joined her at a cookout/dinner party hosted by some of her friends. The next day, and do forgive the details being a little weaker, this being two weeks back, I started out with an incredible brunch. Google had recommended it, and I since found out Sydney is well known for its brunch culture. It was also a wake up call to food prices, something I had come, well warned of. The meal with coffee was $24 Australian, for something that was delicious, but wouldn't come to £17 in the UK. This sadly meant that other than a few token occasions, I mostly ate pretty badly while in Australia. I then did the coastal walk from Bondi beach to Coogee beach, before getting a bus to Watson's bay. From here you can get a commuter/tourist ferry into Circular Quay. Monday was my only warm day, so it was nice to get the ferry into the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge area. I walked to St Mary's cathedral, and then got the train back to Madeline's flat. That night I went for a great burger with Madeline and her boyfriend Morgan. The next day the weather was horrible so I lied in as long as possible so I'd be able to go straight to my hostel and check-in immediately. There's very little else to say about that day. In the evening I tried to find a couple of bars that I'd read about, but due to Sydney's ludicrous lockout laws they were closed. I walked to Mrs Macquarie's chair, a good viewpoint of the harbour. I was having quite a nice reflective moment when Sydney's heavens opened and I got absolutely drenched, before getting an uber back. The next day it was grim again but I managed to fill it by going up Sydney's sky tower, and then a tour of the Opera House. The tour is great, and the magnitude of the auditoriums is impressive. Sadly the one photo in this blog is the only photo I was able to sneak. With productions on the whole time photos were banned and the tour guide was quite scary, watching everyone leave before he left the room. That evening I hung out with an American who was on his 2 week break from an eight month tour of Afghanistan. He was clearly fairly senior and there was quite a bit he couldn't tell me about his life, but what he could sounded horrific, tiring, and a lifestyle you've got to believe in to take part in. On my last day I had to leave at 4 for a flight, and so I just went to the NSW art gallery, which was alright, and then made my way to the airport. I also had breakfast with Viv, who you'll find in the Thailand blog, and who had told me I simply had to visit Sydney. She then told me I simply had to come back as I hadn't seen enough sunny days. On arrival in Melbourne, which took a while cause the bus at the stupid rural airport was delayed and so it was two and a half hours from landing to hostel, I took a short walk around Melbourne river before finding myself the only person in my hostel room at midnight. A clear sign that Melbourne had a vastly different nightlife culture to Sydney. It did give me an opportunity to continue my addiction to the Netflix serial drama, 'The People vs OJ Simpson'. The next day I met up with Kitty, who was at forest sixth form. We went to Hosier Lane, famous for its street art, then to the library, and onto Brighton Beach, which is a warmer, cleaner, less busy, version of the British version. I also got pretty badly burnt there, something I'm still suffering from today. That night I went to see the Melbourne Rebels vs Waikato Chiefs (Rugby Union). The Rebels were supposed to get taken to pieces, given they had shipped 80 points the week previous, and this game was 18th vs 5th (in an 18 team league). The Chiefs did receive 2 yellow cards, but it was still impressive that the game was 14-14 with 10 minutes to go. Although Melbourne went down 27-14, the local papers the next day practically treated it as a victory they were so in shock. I then had a pretty late St Paddy's day night with some people from my hostel. This meant that the next day checking out at 10am was a struggle, and I didn't have a huge amount of energy to achieve much. I did walk around Melbourne's CBD for a bit, I had intended to go to St Kilda beach but in too much pain from the previous day's burn. Luckily I had Adele tickets with Kitty that evening, at the 75,000 seater Etihad Stadium. She was incredible, and came with her trademark self depreciating stories, and quirky mid show events, such as shooting t-shirts into the crowd, and revealing that she had hidden a letter behind the seat of the person she believed to have the 'worst seat in the stadium'. Despite buying the cheapest seats in the stadium we actually had a great view as the pictures hopefully show. It's taken me a long while to complete this blog, the plane landed and then I was busy etc, now sitting in the tent near Lake Taupo, NZ. So to cut a long story short, I wandered around Melbourne for a few hours that Saturday night, before going to the 24 hour casino to watch England lose to Ireland in the rugby. Then, heavily sleep deprived, I slept in the hostel's lounge room for the majority of Sunday, before flying home. At home I played in the old foresters hockey game, and was with family on Thursday for Granddad's funeral. I am so pleased I was fortunate enough to be able to get back for it, and I feel we did him justice. I'll try and post again after 10 days in NZ with a roundup. I will also add some photos to match these words, tomorrow night, when I will have better wifi.

21. Old MacDonald

This whole ‘pick apples and we’ll give you another year’ scheme is nonsense. I want to stay another year in Australia, ergo I’m immediately inducted into a broken system that seems hellbent against reason.

I have to complete 88 days of farm work. It can be fruit picking, fruit packing, mining (actual digging), construction, tree planting, tree felling, working with farm animals (directly), and sometimes disaster relief. The gist is, it’s mostly seasonal work available in mostly rural areas. But not just rural, it's gotta be within a list of acceptable postcodes. This last part makes it tricky. So off to the county I go.

When I think of rural Victoria, I think of the whole state like a giant spiderweb. At its heart, Melbourne, a growing and bustling city. The father out you go, the smaller the nodes become. Civilization drags on and dwindles, stretching until its last, meager breath. Where I was today was actually a few notches above nothing. Definitely a far cry from a rural outpost. It’s got mom and pop shops, a strong retail market and decent transit. It’s even got the largest KFC I’ve seen in a while, probably former corporate real estate venture that dried up. And strangely, it thrives. It would be as if Brockville, Ontario were suddenly the place to be. Very different from what I was expecting.

So cut to my adventure today:

I woke up super early and got to Southern Cross station. I hopped on the train, which was actually quite easy to snooze in. Quick transition to a coach bus, and voila. I’m in Brockville - I mean, Shepparton.

A sweltering walk in hot jeans led me to today’s Mecca - MADEC. This part was exactly like I pictured, office-like, cheap, grey, supposedly cheerful seats. I was greeted and told to sit and wait for an intake form for work. Finally I felt as though I was brushing up against some sort of system - some structure I realized I sorely missed. I was asked and confirmed yes, I was a working holiday visa and yes I was looking for a second year.

I was whisked into a narrow hallway and asked for my passport. In the hallway. Not at the desk I just saw. After dropping and shuffling through my bags, my details were copied out (which could have been done online, I grumbled). I stood in the same hallway for a photo. This was for my madec card I learned. I was then told to sit through a (mediocre) recorded presentation on fruit picking.

When I first came in, a distant voice was droning on about not smoking near the workplace, which I dutifully tuned out. Don’t smoke, won’t, never will. But this was only the first bit. I was given an induction sheet, which turned out to be a multiple choice quiz to make sure you’re paying attention. The presentation was narrated by an Australian woman speaking very matter of factly about not pooping next to fruit trees (use washrooms provided whilst sitting correctly on toilet seat), the importance of hand washing (answer d) all of the above), and right of ways with tractors (they’ll crush you). Don’t get me wrong, it was important but presented in a bone-headed, ‘well duh’ sort of way.

Anyway the presentation barely covered a fraction of what the woman was saying, maybe three short bullet points for each topic. And it was shown on the screen in small font, in English, Chinese, and two other languages I couldn’t identify. Fairly straightforward for me, but I had concerns.

As a native English speaker, I could tell I had an immediate advantage over the other two young women also there for their induction. I was able to ask questions about why I was only given one farmer to text and set up my first day, where local backpackers and motels where, and could they please email or call me first if something was available (turns out it’s first come, first serve, best of luck. There is no wait list or other way to do this better, apparently.)

So I trekked three hours for a piece of plastic, one phone number, and a promise of employment hopefully within the week. Thanks Shepparton.

I’m very aware of how I sound. The blind confidence, the assurance that I could walk into a recruitment agency and walk out with more of a plan is laughable. Every step of this journey requires effort. I keep forgetting that. While questions and concerns are answered and dismissed online, in practice it’s much more difficult. Like when getting an apartment, getting a job, printing pictures, transportation - and getting farmwork. All it takes is getting out there and hitting the pavement and rolling with the punches. There’s an applicable mixed metaphor for my situation I’m sure. Until then.

WEEK FOURTEEN (Feb 2 - Feb 8)

MELBOURNE, VIC, AUS  

We've started to begin most mornings with a two mile run if it isn't unbearably hot outside. After running, we took the van to a self-service carwash to get it sparkling like new again since we were going to be showing it later to some interested backpackers. We spent the entirety of the afternoon demonstrating the van's features and allowing them to test drive. It was a strange feeling knowing we were slowly inching closer to the day we'd have to give up our beloved "Voyager" (and eventually leave Australia). Since we had already spent a good portion of our journey road tripping / camping, we figured it had become time to part ways with it and use the money for more traveling and plane tickets back home. Several calls later, we arranged for the van to be inspected on Monday at a local automotive car shop in order to set a fair selling price for both us and the purchasing party.

The next day we took the 8 tram down Lygon Street to the CBD for some more exploration of Melbourne. We walked around, shopped a bit, and ended up sharing a plate of dumplings in Chinatown. Melbourne boasts about being home to the world's oldest Chinatown, however, this claim is based on a technicality. San Francisco's Chinatown was actually established before Melbourne's, but the original SF structures all burned to the ground during the 1906 Earthquake, and needed to be rebuilt. While waiting for the tram to head back home, we witnessed a giant congregation outside the Victoria State Library protesting Donald Trump's presidency and the current refugee ban restricting the inflow of refugees from war torn countries into America and Australia. We decided to pass up our bus, and instead joined the protest for a while before they began to march down Swanson Street in the CBD. It has been difficult being so far away from all the action (marches / protests) back home, so it felt empowering to stand in solidarity with likeminded people against inequality and bigotry.

We had a pretty lazy weekend with the house to ourselves, but we still managed to stay productive. Two loads of laundry were washed and hung to dry, we cleaned the bathroom, and vacuumed / cleaned our bedroom. Our downtime was spent playing guitar, writing, drawing, cooking, and Brittany began preparing the digital scrapbook of our adventures thus far.

Monday finally rolled around, and we drove the van to a nearby mechanic early in the morning to see what repairs were needed before selling the vehicle. We dropped it off, walked home along the Merri Creek Trail, and waited all day for them to call us. By 4:30pm, we still hadn't heard back, so we decided to take a stroll back to the mechanic's, fearing Jed had cited his callback phone number incorrectly. When we arrived, we received a detailed list of what needed to be repaired for safety and ended up leaving the van overnight for them to prepare us a quote. The next day, we waited at home until 2:00pm (mechanic said they'd call 'after lunch'), but not wanting to waste another day inside, we hopped on the tram to Fitzroy for $3 Taco Tuesday specials at "Beach Burrito" on Gertrude Street. We ate lunch in a booth next to an empty skate-able concrete pool inside the restaurant. Jed unfortunately left his skateboard at home, so the only shredding going on was the meat in our beef tacos. Brunswick Street in Fitzroy is full of second-hand clothing and record stores, and is popular among both locals and tourists alike seeking a taste of Melbourne's bohemian culture.  After poking around several shops, we headed back to Brunswick East to pick the van up from the mechanic. We laid out in the shallow water on partially submerged sandbars to stay cool. After two hours in the sun, we grabbed a bite to eat at "Veludo" on the lively Acland Street in St. Kilda, where we enjoyed tasty food and happy-hour Coronas. The restaurant was situated near the last stop for the 96 tram, so we easily got on and road back all the way to the opposite end of the line in Brunswick East. Since the Queen Victoria "Summer Night Market" happens every Wednesday night from 5pm to 10pm, we took quick showers, changed clothes, and then headed right back out to catch the tram to the markets. Although there are not as many goods vendors as there are in the daytime, the Night Market is much more lively with tons of food stands, seating areas, and musical performers. We waited in line for specialty iced tea, took photo booth pictures, and ate ice cream cones while listening to a Hawaiian band. Everything closed down around 10pm, so as the atmosphere died, we walked to the Melbourne Central to catch the tram back home.

Days 31 to 33

The weekend (what is a weekend when we are travelling like this - maybe just the days when we are inconvenienced because some of the shops are shut?) was mainly rest and recovery from an energy-sapping week.  We needed to do grocery-shopping, washing, catching up on email, making phone calls and other housekeeping matters.  I had spent a couple of hours in the Botanic Gardens looking at birds before our trip north and saw one that I thought was different from what we had seen before, but which I instantly recognised from the Field Guide - until I found that it had only ever been reported in Australia once before: in 1993.  I contacted a birding expert and friend in Melbourne and he was a little excited about the possibility of the sighting and suggested I go back to try to photograph it when we returned to Darwin.  I did so, but unfortunately, despite a couple more hours searching, I saw neither the bird, nor the species I thought it was flying with, so it all came to nought.  I am still pretty confident of what I saw, but not quite sure enough to pursue it further.  It would have been nice, but you know what they say: 'The things you see when you don't have a gun' (or camera).  Missed my 15 minutes of birding fame.

Monday meant an early start because we had a guy coming at 8am to service the van and we needed to be out of the van while he worked on it.  We had an appointment with the pharmacist and had to go to the bank and the Post Office, so kept ourselves busy until the serviceman had finished.

Tuesday was also an early start because we wanted to speak with the people at the Information Centre who we had met on the Adelaide River Tour.  We needed information about permits to visit Kakadu as individuals (rather than as part of an organised tour) as well as getting more details about things to see and the road conditions in the Park and elsewhere where we hoped to travel in the next week or so.  Notwithstanding our trip to the centre of the city, we were still on the road again by 10.30 and just cruised along slowly stopping to look at whatever there was to see.  

First visit was Humpty Doo – what a name but not much else.  It is now something of a dormitory suburb for Darwin, but was originally the site of a lot of activism opposing the proposed uranium mining in Kakadu back in the 50s and 60s.  I had some romantic idea that it would be as quaint as its name, but alas, its name seems to be its redeeming feature.  Heather tried to buy us a very late breakfast at the bakery without the least success and came away with a much-needed, but expensive soft drink as her only prize.

We took the road into Fogg Dam and that was a wonderful surprise.  (We also tried to visit the nearby Harrison Dam but were thwarted by the boggy conditions – just too risky to take the caravan through.  At least, it gave me a chance to practise my 7-point turns with the caravan connected). The area between the two dams was the site of a failed rice-growing experiment some years ago, but the area that was flooded as a result has become a truly amazing area for birds.  It was another stunningly beautiful area of wetland full of water lilies and teeming with birds – bush birds as well as water birds (we spotted two that we had not seen before!). We had lunch near the elevated lookout and saw more than 30 species in less than an hour – and there were hundreds or even thousands of birds of many species. It was a great place to visit and we were glad we had ventured in.  We had asked several people about it during the week and got virtually no information at all.  Not sure why it seemed to be such a mystery, but it was quite a highlight for us and should be on anyone’s itinerary who visits the area.  A definite MUST!

We also called in at a place called Window on the Wetlands.  It is run by NT Parks and Wildlife and is an interpretive centre about wetlands in general, but those of the area in particular – and a great interactive place for kids, although none were there while we were.  It has a number of excellent displays about the Aboriginal use of the area, the plants and wildlife there, a bit of historical stuff – and a great DVD about the animals in the area that we sat and watched for half an hour.  The views across the wetlands were fantastic and we could see for miles in all directions.  The building itself was quite unusual with a roofline modelled on brolga’s wings.  It was our second surprise for the day and both were equally delightful in quite different ways.

It was then on to Jabiru for fuel (and our chat with the driver from the ‘bogged bus’ tour company) then back 3-4 km to Corroboree Park: the place we had stopped and seen the penned buffalos and crocodiles on our way back from the Cobourg Peninsula the previous Friday.  There were lots of agile wallabies hopping around and I spent an hour or so checking out the birds before dinner. 

We had driven barely 120km during the day (we often do 300 or more), but it was a great day with lots of memories to cherish about the beautiful area we had travelled through and the things we had learned along the way.
