My Issue #79 expectations are kinda late

But late enough so I don't have to add spoiler tags. I decided to make this post less about criticizing complaints and more about what I see in these characters, although it might end up as a combination of both.

People were saying that this next issue was going to be bad because in the first two preview pages Mimic seemed to make a lackluster impression of Cream. But no matter what "Expert Infiltrator" tag he might have, he's nowhere near that, he's only an actor (that admittedly improved his skills after he joined the Diamond Cutters) that can shapeshift, and at this point in the story, he needs to put more work if he plans to fool Whisper again. People think that the writers are dumbing him down in order to make Whisper look better, when in reality it's been the opposite for quite a while (that will certainly be a rant post some other time), but no they're not, Mimic can't use any person to fool Whisper at this point, so he picks Cream, one more likely to somewhat pass, given the limitations of his shapeshifting abilities, yet he gets her mannerisms wrong, is Cream a person he can easily study, when she's guarded by Gemerl at all times? He must have not had enough time to study her proper, so the blunder is understandable, even for him.

But what gets in his way is not stupidity or lackluster performance, it's his arrogance. He has belittled and underestimated Whisper this entire time, after all, he genuinely thinks she wasn't with them as an act of cowardice, when in reality, it was Claire herself that asked Whisper not to go, despite the latter be more than willing to trust Mimic's intel.

Mimic thinks very little of Whisper, enough to assume she wasn't going to do anything after the Diamond Cutters where murdered, to the point he gets bested by her when they confront, and what does he do to get the upper hand? Manipulate her. Cause that is what he does when he is aware he's in a losing spot. Heck, he even manipulates Blue.

But the thing is, it stops working and he knows this. So next time they see (and is put on the spot by Whisper and Silver's accusations), what does he do? Manipulate those around them, because he knows he can't do that to her anymore.

And that is the thing about him, he projects his cowardice onto her, but he is the coward one, always running away from upfront conflict, choosing to use cunning methods to backstab; not necessarily a bad thing, one has to know one's weaknesses, and he does that pretty darn well, he's careful with the fights he chooses, and that makes him smart, it's his arrogance what makes him commit this huge blunder, because, once again: he keeps underestimating Whisper. Assuming she goes in alone, assuming he's the one setting her up with the surprise factor when in fact it's her the one setting him up, and his arrogance makes him blind to this, for she has never done something like it, and I don't think he thought she would be capable of it.

I've yet to read the issue, but I assume he'll offend her, call her all sorts of things for doing this 'trickery', even though he has done the same before (ask Eggman for a robot army, manipulate Lanolin and those around to make Whisper doubt herself), he doesn't fight fair and he knows it, he's smart to turn the tide in his favor, but his obsession with Whisper set his arrogance too high and THAT was his blunder, not that he was a bad infiltrator or that his earned skills were lacking.

I love Mimic's character a lot, and sadly he's nerfed by the kind of media he's in, but I'm glad we got to see a character such as himself. He would have made an even better antagonist material if they didn't drag on this plotline with stupid crap.

one thing i absolutely adored about Superman (2025)?.. the fact that in-universe, superheroes have existed publicly for centuries. Superman is just another metahuman, and they're a very commonplace sort of thing - which the movie makes extremely clear. the civilians - or even animals!!! - aren't freaked by a kaiju downtown, Lois barely spares a glance to the interdimensional imp. superheroes get interviewed and sometimes operate via corporate sponsorships. seeing a superhero is like seeing animal control or a repairs company on your street - or maybe the fire department. Clark is automatically humanized, simply by being one of many

outside of the fact that everyone who has sex is murdered by the narrative, this is a surprisingly chill portrayal of female sexuality? these teen girls are horny and actively enjoying Getting It On with their boytoys. no pushy boyfriends sneaking in through their bedroom windows--these ladies are taking the initiative to sneak out and GET SOME. one of them gets laid and then immediately orders her boyfriend to get her a beer. (yes she gets Slashered soon afterward, but so does the boyfriend so honestly, gender equality.) yes the Final Girl is the only one not having sex, but she's not bullied for that, nor are her friends slut shamed except possibly by being murdered by the narrative

actually the only character who is shown being morally condemned on-screen is michael myers. specifically FOR his violent overreaction to other people's sex lives. (people he is spying on). metaphorically, the villain is American Puritanism sticking its judgy nose into other people's business.

but actually the real villain is the doctor. guy's a judgemental, shaming, pathologizing asshole. and he's been in charge of michael's care since he was SIX YEARS OLD? kid never had a chance. i'd go on a killing spree too

also the parents. where are the parents? it's halloween night and all the teenage girls are home babysitting their younger siblings? come to think of it, michael's first victim was his own older sister, whom he killed while she was babysitting him. teen girls are really shouldering a labour burden here. maybe parentification is the true villain

side note: mike commits his first murder wearing a clown costume...which is never referenced again? his 'iconic' costume is a generic mask and wig and jumpsuit, when we coulda had a Killer Clown Michael Myers??? travesty

i like how the Final Girl and her friend casually smoke weed in her car. yeah she's an honor student and her friend is the sheriff's daughter. yeah they smoke weed. so what it's 1978
