Wrote out Tuesday and the first 22 lines of yesterday - should have noted on Tuesday that in the evening Mrs. D- [Duffin] shewed me her diamonds and poor Eliza Raine's watch which Lady Crawford left to Mr. D- [Duffin] and he wished her to wear, but she (Mrs. D- [Duffin]) would leave it to me at her death, as she considered all E.R-'s [Eliza Raine's] things mine, now Lady C- [Crawford] was dead - I immediately said I had the chain belonging the watch that E.R- [Eliza Raine] had given me ages ago, and she (Mrs. D- [Duffin]) should have it to wear with the watch - thought I then they seem to think that if anything happens to Eliza I have some chance for coming in for what she has but made no remark further than that even if there was difficulty about the will in favour of Captain Alexander yet in the event of his death it would be a lapsed legacy as left to him only not his heir -
Down to breakfast at 9 3/4 - went into the stable with Mrs. D- [Duffin] as yesterday - the Percivals of Acomb called at 12 not caring to see them, and having been on the point of going to the Cromptons', slank out, followed them out of the bar, and walked to a little beyond the Kennels - there sat some time - Elizabeth Henrietta, and Caroline - saw Mr. D- [Duffin] and Miss S.G- [Sophia Greenup] mount, and at 2 went out with Mrs. D- [Duffin] called at the C-s [Cromptons], and sat a few minutes - they said quite a flirtation between Joshua and me I said I really had not found it out no said they he thought you the pleasantest woman he saw in Paris said I was flattered joked said an English squire was better than a foreign count and I should come into possession of six such sisters......called again on Norcliffe - out - met him in Little Blake Street - called on Mrs. Best - out - then sat some time with Mrs. Stainforth - then went to look at the Castle wall and entrance gate they are building - very handsome In a castle-style - met Mrs. H.S.B- [Henry Stephen Belcombe] returning from calling on me by appointment at 4 - it was only 4 1/4 - returned with her and Miss Belcombe - went with them to Mrs. Young's to see fashionable hats and caps etc. Mrs. Belcombe there - she had come in too to Mrs. Stainforth while we were there - shakes hands, and would seem as usual but I, tho' no stranger might perceive it, am, tho' very attentive, yet rather formally so -
Got home at 5 1/4 - dinner at 5 1/2 - young Parsons at 7 1/4 for 50 minutes dressing my hair to go to the Yorkes' - dressed like long hair very fairly but not beautifully as in Paris - went to the Y-s' [Yorkes'] (Mr. and Mrs. D- [Duffin] went at 8, and I waited a few minutes for Miss S.G- [Sophia Greenup]) at 9 1/4 - met there Mrs. Willey and Miss Elliott, Mrs. Moseley, the Misses Hutchinson - talked almost entirely to Miss or Mrs. Yorke - got home at 10 30/60 came to my room at 10 3/4 - fine day, but rain at 9 p.m. and afterwards - my letter to my aunt (vide yesterday) too late last night went this evening -

JAXA - Success! MASCOT landed safely on asteroid Ryugu
JAXA - Hayabusa2 Mission patch. October 3, 2018 A shoebox-sized lander called the Mobile Asteroid Surface Scout (MASCOT) deployed from its mothership, Japan's Hayabusa2 spacecraft, as planned at 9:57 p.m. EDT Tuesday (Oct. 2; 0157 GMT on Oct. 3) and came to rest on Ryugu shortly thereafter. "It could not have gone better," MASCOT project manager Tra-Mi Ho, from the DLR Institute of Space Systems in Bremen, Germany, said in a statement. (DLR is the German acronym for the German Aerospace Center, which built MASCOT in collaboration with the French space agency, CNES.

"From the lander's telemetry, we were able to see that it separated from the mothercraft and made contact with the asteroid surface approximately 20 minutes later," Ho added. MASCOT has already started gathering data with its four onboard science instruments — a camera, a radiometer, a spectrometer and a magnetometer — mission team members said. The 22-lb. (10 kilograms) lander must make haste, because its battery is expected to die just 16 hours after touchdown.

MASCOT took 20 photos during its slow descent toward Ryugu, and these images are stored aboard Hayabusa2 at the moment, mission team members said. And observations made by the magnetometer before separation (which occurred when Hayabusa2 was about 167 feet, or 51 meters, above Ryugu) have already made it down to Earth. "The measurements show the relatively weak field of the solar wind and the very strong magnetic disturbances caused by the spacecraft," MASCOT team member Karl-Heinz Glaßmeier, from the Technical University of Braunschweig in Germany, said in the same statement. "At the moment of the separation, we expected a clear decrease of the interference field — and we were able to recognize this clearly."

MASCOT is following in the footsteps of MINERVA-II1A and MINERVA-II1B, two 2.4-lb. (1.1 kg) rovers that deployed from Hayabusa2 on the night of Sept. 21. Both of those little robots aced their touchdowns and soon began exploring the surface of Ryugu. Like the Japanese-built MINERVA-II1A and MINERVA-II1B, the autonomous MASCOT can move by hopping, which it does by manipulating a metallic "swing arm" inside its body. The lander can also use this arm to right itself on Ryugu's surface — an important feature, because MASCOT needs to be right side up to gather data and beam it up to Hayabusa2. The $150 million Hayabusa2 mission launched in December 2014 and arrived in orbit around Ryugu in late June of this year. The mothership may have one more rover deployment to go: It still carries the "optional" hopper MINERVA-II2, which could make its way to Ryugu's surface next year.

And the orbiter itself will make its way down to the space rock in 2019 as well, after sending a nonexplosive impactor barreling into Ryugu. Hayabusa2 will grab pristine, previously subsurface samples from the newly created crater; this material is scheduled to come down to Earth in a return capsule in December 2020. Data gathered by the mission at Ryugu and by scientists who examine its returned sample should shed considerable light on the solar system's early history and the role that carbon-rich asteroids like Ryugu may have played in life's emergence on Earth, Hayabusa2 team members have said. Biomed Grid | Detection of Escherichia Coli in Freshly Harvested Spinach Samples Collected from Five Different Markets in Zaria
Abstract
Escherichia coli, though, normal flora of the digestive tract of human and animals have over the years evolved the ability to cause a wide range of disease. A total of 100 freshly harvested and ready to sale spinach samples in five selected market in Zaria, Kaduna State were collected and analysed for E.coli 0157: H7. Twenty (20) samples each were collected from Sabon Gari, Palladan, Samaru, Hayin Dogo and PZ. Isolates were screened using the conventional biochemical characterization for E. coli O157: H7. Twelve (12) gram of spinach leaves each was washed with sterile distilled water. Five (5) mls of each washing was inoculated into 5 mls of double strength Mac Conkey broth and inoculated for 24 hours at 370C. A loop full of the positive colonies was subcultured on EMB Agar and incubated for 24 h at 370C a greenish metallic sheen on the surrounding medium were observed. These presumptive positive colonies were stored in nutrient Agar slant at 40C until it was required for biochemical test. E. coli was confirmed by biochemical test and the growth on EMB Agar. Out of the 100 samples collected, Isolates were screened using the conventional biochemical characterization for E. coli O157: H7. A total of 119 (47.6%) E. coli O157: H7 and 16 (6.4%) E. coli O157 was isolated respectively. Therefore, there is need to characterize the E. coli from spinach in local markets in Zaria, so as to checkmate and create awareness on the spread of E. coli especially 0157:H7 infection in livestock and humans in Zaria and Kaduna State.

Introduction
Escherichia coli are natural predominant facultative anaerobes common in the lower intestines of endothermic animals and it grows in most laboratory media at an incubation temperature of (370C) optimum [1]. They colonize the gastrointestinal tract hours after birth or days after [2]. Nevertheless, some strains have evolved the capability to cause both intestinal and extra intestinal illnesses [3,4]. Not all the strains are harmless, as some can cause debilitating and sometimes fatal diseases in humans as well as mammals and birds [5]. Faecal–oral transmission is the major route through which pathogenic strains of the bacterium cause disease. Cells of the bacteria can survive outside the body for a limited amount of time, which makes them potential indicator organisms to test environmental samples for faecal contamination [6,7]. In Zaria, Tijani et al. [8], Kabiru et al. [9] reported the prevalence of Escherichia coli 0157:H7 in spinach grown around abattoir waste dumpsite, manure farm and soil, irrigated with raw abattoir wastewater. This suggests that spinach are vegetables that can potentially harbor Escherichia coli when manured with contaminated faeces. The use of raw manure or slurry (liquid manure) on or near fruit and vegetable crops, particularly those to be eaten raw is a potential hazard for Escherichia coli especially 0157:H7 [8] and hence the need for work to be done on the prevalence of E.coli in spinach meant for human consumption in Zaria and its environs. Studies have shown that Escherichia coli especially 0157:H7 can survive in faeces for extensive periods of 70-100 days at the temperature in the region of 45 0C [10]. Thereby establishing that faeces serving as manure to most subsistence and commercial farmers growing spinach at backyard or irrigational farms at dry season may be a potential vehicle for transmission of the organism into the environment [11].
Materials and MethodsStudy Area
The study was carried out in Samaru Campus of ABU, Zaria, Sabon Gari Local Government Area of Kaduna State. Located on Latitude (11°11´N, 07, 38´E, 686m above sea level) in the Northern Guinea Savannah with temperature ranging from 13.8° to 36.7 °C. Annual rainfall of 1092.8mm [12]. Farming system in Zaria can be divided into two types: Rainfall (from May to October) and irrigation farming in the dry season (from November to April). Dry season farming is the second most prevalent Agricultural activity in Zaria with vegetables being the common produce, but in some cases, fruits are sandwiched among cereal crops [13].
Sample Collection
A total of 100 samples of freshly harvested spinach leaves were procured randomly in sterile polythene bags from 5 different open markets in Zaria metropolis. Twenty (20) samples each were collected from Sabon Gari, Samaru, Hayin-Dogo, Palladan and PZ markets and transported on ice cold packs of the laboratory and analyzed immediately.
Isolation and Identification
Freshly plucked spinach samples were purchased from five different markets in Zaria Metropolis, the stem and roots were removed and discarded, while the leaves were washed thoroughly with distilled water and the washing was placed in universal bottles. Five mls of the spinach washing was inoculated into 5mls of double strength Mac Conkey broth and inoculated for 24 hours at 37 0C. A loop full of the positive colonies was subcultured on EMB Agar and incubated for 24h at 37 0C a greenish metallic sheen on the surrounding medium were observed. Pure culture of all colonies on EMB agar that exhibited typical dark purple red colour with metallic sheen which characterized E. coli were again subculture on Mac Conkey agar for identification and purification of lactose fermenting colonies. Biochemical tests such as indole, citrate, carbohydrate fermentation tests and MR-VP test were done on all lactose fermenting colonies to confirm E. coli. All the Lactose fermenting colonies were picked and stored in nutrient Agar slants (Oxoid) at 4 0C for further test. Biochemical test that were carried out to isolate E. coli, includes: Triple Sugar ion (TSI), Indole, Urease, Citrate, Motility, Methyl Red (MR), Vokes Proskaur (VP) and H4S production.
Biochemical tests
The conventional biochemical test was conducted according to [14]. Five different biochemical media were used, and all media were prepared according to manufacturer’s instructions.
Citrate utilization test
This test is based on the ability of an organism to use citrate as its source of carbon. A sterile wire loop was used to inoculate the isolate onto the Simon’s citrate agar medium, which was already prepared as slant in test tubes, and incubated at 370C for 24hours after which it was examined for color change. A bright blue color in the medium was observed at against green coloration.
Methyl red voges proskauer test (MRVP)
A loop full of the organism was inoculated into a MRVP media and incubated at 370C for 24 hours. The turbid positive broth was divided into two halves, 2-3 drops of methyl red was added to one broth and observed for formation of pink color coloration, while to the remaining half, 5drops of 40.0% potassium hydroxide (KOH) and 5drops of 5.0% of alcoholic alpha-45 Naphthol were added and shaken vigorously for homogenization. The cap of the tube is placed in a sloping position. The development of a red color starting from the liquid air interface within 15-30minutes was indicative of a positive test.
Urease test
Urease hydrolyzes urea to give alkaline ammonia (NH5) and carbon dioxide. Urease liquid media was poured in three to five milliliters portion in a sterile screw-top glass tube. The tubes were inoculated with a loop full of the positive isolate using a sterile wire loop, but the tubes were placed in a slanting position and incubated at 37 0C for 24 hours. A pink color indicating positive test while a yellow colouration was considered negative.
Indole test
A sterile wire loop was used to inoculate a colony of the positive organism into a prepared SIM (Sulphide, Indole and Motility) media. The tube was capped and incubated at 37 0C for 24 hours. After incubation, four drops of Kovac’s reagent was added to the medium using a sterile pasteur pipette to examine for the production of indole by the organism. Observation of red coloration on the surface layer within ten minutes gave a positive result. The suspected isolates when inoculated into the medium using a sterile straight wire followed by incubation by 370C for 24 hours. The upper layer of the inoculated medium and line of stabbing was observed for the presence of dark coloration which will be indicative of a positive H4S test.
Motility test
Motility test medium was poured into test tubes and allowed to solidify. The tubes were inoculated with a colony of the test organism using a sterile wire pin and incubated at 37 oC for twenty-four hours before tests were read.
Triple sugar iron agar
Carbohydrates fermentation test in triple sugar iron agar slants were performed from commercially prepared TSI mix and poured in to a test tube which is placed in such a manner to allow the butt of the agar to be four centimeters deep, the slants were inoculated with a colony of the test organism using a sterile wire loop. Observable color changes as red and pink were interpreted as alkaline and acids with or without gas formation.
Results
Tables 1 & 2 shows the frequency and distribution of suspected E. coli isolated from spinach gotten from five different sites in Zaria Metropolis, Kaduna State. Using EMB, while Table 1, further confirms the presence of the E. coli, using the conventional Biochemical Test method. Out of the 100 samples of spinach screened for E. coli 119 (47.6) % were positive with typical growth on EMB as shown in Table 1. The results showed that Hayin Dogo had the least number of E. coli positive isolates on EMB 14 (28.0%). In addition, Palladan had the highest positive isolates on EMB 28 (56%). Further screening of the isolate with conventional biochemical tests showed a decrease in total number and percentages of confirmed E. coli isolate on both EMB agar from 119 (47.6) and 16(6.4) respectively.

Discussion
The result from this research showed that Escherichia coli O157: H7 were cultured from spinach sourced from five different open markets in Zaria metropolis, Kaduna State. An occurrence of 119 (47.6%) E. coli O157: H7 and 16 (6.4%) E. coli O157: H7 respectively was observed which is higher than the occurrence reported by Reuben & Makut [15], Enabulele & Uraih [16] with a prevalence rate of 17.5% and 19.5% in Lafia and Benin Metropolises respectively. In other parts of the World, Mora et al. [17] and Benard [18] reported occurrence rates of 18.2% and 21.66% respectively. The high occurrence of E.coli as observed in this research could be attributed to high microbial load on vegetables especially those grown around faecal waste dumpsite during e dry season when there is no rainstorm-washing to reduce the microbial load on the vegetables as reported by [19]. Solomon et al. [20] and Kabiru et al. [9] also opined that manure application and irrigation with contaminated water as frequently done during the dry season in Zaria metropolis could have been another reason for this finding in which isolates were confirmed highly E. coli positive. This also agrees with earlier isolation records by Brown et al. [21] who reported that E. coli especially 0157:H7 is more common in warmer months of the year and sampling plans that could include these times of the year, will result in higher recovery rates. The isolation of the pathogen (E. coli O157: H7) in Zaria metropolis suggests that contamination of spinach sold to consumers exposes them to food-borne hazards. The socio-economic implication is that resources and time are wasted on medication. The effects of food-borne infections are also greatly felt by immune-compromised individuals such as people living with HIV/AIDS, pregnant women, children, diabetic patients [22].
Leafy vegetables are an essential component of a healthy diet; however, they have been associated with high-profile outbreaks causing severe illnesses [23,24]. In addition to E. coli capacity to cause infection to humans, the ingestion of contaminated foods, water and vegetables offered to livestock may contribute to the prevalence of infections in farm animals with a resultant contamination of the environment [25-29].
Conclusion
The findings of this research have indicated the occurrence of Escherichia coli O157:H7 in spinach sourced from five open markets in Zaria Metropolis. This portends public health consequences to the unsuspecting general populace who would usually ingest such vegetable. There is therefore the need to educate the public on personal and environmental hygiene and adherence to good food handling practices such as washing of hands and disinfecting of all vegetables thoroughly before consumption. It is also the authors’ opinion that further research work be conducted to characterize at molecular level, the E. coli from spinach in local markets in Zaria.

「スーパーマリオ」を遊び続けて
 FC2ブログで日記のような物を書き続けていた時、極たまに長々としたゲームのレビューを掲載する事が何度かありましたが、今回はそれの延長線上にある物のように思っていただいて構いません。人生の半分以上はマリオが好きな人間として生き続けていましたが、その中でも1番大きな出来事が今も僕自身を考えさせており、今回はそれについて書こうと思います。
 その出来事というのは、2010年に発売された『スーパーマリオギャラクシー2』の「社長が訊く」です。マリオファンなら、印象に残っているという方もいらっしゃるのではないでしょうか。あの「社長が訊く」では宮本さんが「共感」という言葉に焦点を当てて岩田さんと話をしているところがあります。そこで宮本さんが語った「共感」の意味が理解できずにいたのです。  そもそも何故、この「共感」の話になったのかというと、「マリオにストーリーは必要なのか」という点からですよね。2007年に発売された前作『スーパーマリオギャラクシー』は今までのマリオからは想像つかないくらいに壮大なストーリー性を持ったゲームでした。この事から初登場だったロゼッタが絶大な人気を得たのも、まだまだ記憶に新しいですね。同年に発売された『スーパーペーパーマリオ』もまたストーリー性の強いゲームでした。この2作が悪く言えば今回の原因だったのか、『マリオギャラクシー2』ではバッサリとストーリーが削られる事になりました。発売前にインターネットサイトで見られたインタビューでこれを知った時は、なかなかのショックでしたね。 では、話を戻しましょうか。 <遊んでいる自分が、その世界に“共感”できるかどうか、それがいちばん大事なことだということ> <ええ。“共感”できないからその世界に入り込めないんです。> (< >内「社長が訊く 『スーパーマリオギャラクシー2』」より引用:https://www.nintendo.co.jp/wii/interview/sb4j/vol1/index3.html)  「共感」とは、自分が人の考えや感情に対してその通りだという気持ちを持つ事、だと僕は思い続けてきました。ですが、ここでは自分自身すなわちゲームのプレイヤーとゲーム内に繰り広げられる世界との「共感」です。何だかスケールの大きい話ですね。これに長い間、疑問を持ち続けていたのですが、解釈としては「プレイヤーがゲーム内の世界にある、あれこれに対して一切の疑問を持たずに納得がいくか」という事なのでしょうか。  この「共感」を大切にした結果、『マリオギャラクシー2』からは大幅にストーリー性が削られ、それ以降に発売されたマリオのゲームでも同様の事に加えて、登場キャラクターや世界観を『NewスーパーマリオブラザーズWii』の物に統一するという制作体制に変わっていきました。これらの事から、宮本さんにとっての「共感」とは、シンプルで分かりやすい、単純である、それが理解しやすいという事に繋がり「共感」が生まれる。という風に僕は読み取る事にしました。  そこで岩田さんが『NewスーパーマリオWii』が世界中で受け入れられたという話をしています。こちらは所謂「いつものマリオ」感溢れるゲームで、ストーリー性はほぼ皆無でしたね。任天堂からしたら『マリオギャラクシー1』よりも『NewスーパーマリオWii』の方が人気があったのは、世界観やストーリーの有無による「共感」の違いがあったから、という事が1つとして上げられていたのでしょうか。  ここで宮本さんや任天堂自体が『NewスーパーマリオWii』が受け入れられた理由を少し勘違いをしたり、極端な解釈をしてしまったのではないかと思います。まずはっきり言って、何故『マリオギャラクシー1』よりも『NewスーパーマリオWii』の方が売上、つまり人気があったのかと言われたら、そんなもの2Dマリオと3Dマリオの違いの差に決まっています。2Dマリオが売りにしている、誰でも手軽に、に対して3Dアクションゲームである3Dマリオは敷居が高い物になっていますからね。任天堂自身、それをずっと課題にし続けているくらいにです。  しかし『NewスーパーマリオWii』が大ヒットした結果、『マリオギャラクシー1』にあるようなストーリー性や独自の世界観は不要であると判断されたのでしょう。それから、そういった要素を排除し、2Dマリオと3Dマリオの融合系として作られた『スーパーマリオ 3Dランド』や、『NewスーパーマリオWii』の世界観で統一した『マリオパーティ9』等が発売され、ついにあの『ペーパーマリオ スーパーシール』が世に出回る日が訪れたのです。  その頃には宮本さんは『スーパーシール』の「社長が訊く」では「共感」という言葉は使わず、バッサリとストーリーはいらないと言っています。これは2016年に発売した『スターフォックス ゼロ』のインタビューでも似たような発言として<「ゲームにストーリーはつけない」>と仰っています。 (< >内「『スターフォックス 『スーパーシール』は、戦略性とアクション性の合わさった戦闘システムから、個性豊かなキャラクター達、波瀾万丈のストーリー、そこから零れる小ネタや裏話に設定、そして独自の空気を持った世界観といった「ペーパーマリオ」シリーズの魅力であった数々の要素を全て根絶やしにし、ストーリー性を消し去り『NewスーパーマリオWii』の世界観で統一、オリジナルキャラクターはルーシー以外に無し、味方キャラは色違いのキノピオだけ。更にゲームシステム自体も上手く料理できておらず未完成品のようでした。「ペーパーマリオ」シリーズは上記の事から、マリオファン以外からの支持も熱い作品だったので、傷を負ったプレイヤーは非常に多かったですね。この辺りから縛りが極端になり、マリオが変わっていってしまいました。  2012年からのマリオゲームは全て駄作だ、だなんて言うつもりは毛頭ありません。楽しませてもらった作品はたくさんあります。しかし、この縛りによって大なり小なり影響を受けたゲームは非常に多かったです。  例えば『マリオ&ルイージRPG4 ドリームアドベンチャー』。僕の大好きなマリオゲームの1つです。この時期のマリオゲームと比べると味方からボス、モブまでオリジナルキャラクターで揃えられ、新たな舞台マクラノ島で冒険を繰り広げるという独自性を持っていました。ですが、その一方でストーリーにはどうしても違和感を覚えてしまうのです。確か当時の雑誌に掲載された開発者インタビューでは、開発中にストーリーの変更があった事が語られていました。  こうなると、やはり疑ってしまう訳ですよね。アルファドリームがゲームを制作している途中に、任天堂からの監修が入って、マリオにこういう���トーリーは必要ないから修正しなさい、といった事があったのではないかと。無理に変更を入れた為に不自然なストーリーになってしまったように見えます。次回作である『マリオ&ルイージRPG ペーパーマリオMIX』では、同様にインタビューで語られていましたが、言われなくてもこれは途中で変えさせられたんだなと分かる内容になっていました。 僕は数あるマリオゲームの中でも「ペーパーマリオ」や「マリオ&ルイージRPG」が大好きなので、この縛りでこのような結果に仕上がってしまったのが非常に残念に思います。  『スーパーシール』が発売された2012年から、長いような短いような時が経ち、2017年に『スーパーマリオ オデッセイ』が発売されました。従来の『NewスーパーマリオWii』の世界観で統一した制作体制から180度の方向転換をし、現実世界にもあるようなビル街やそこを歩くマリオとはかけ離れたリアルな頭身をした人物、果てにはヨッシーという存在があるのにも関わらず、ティラノサウルスや細部までリアルに描かれたドラゴンまで登場するゲームになっていました。  トレーラーではシリーズ初のボーカル曲まで流れて、もう僕は泣きましたよ。マリオの冒険が帰ってきたと。4Gamer.netに掲載された『マリオオデッセイ』プロデューサーである小泉さんのインタビューではこの用に語られていました。 <最初のコンセプトは“人の心に刺さり続ける,新しいマリオ”で,それに沿う形で従来のマリオには入れられないようなさまざまな要素のアイデアが生まれてきました。> <まずはディレクター達に「今のマリオには,人の心に刺さる驚きが必要なんじゃないか」という話をしました。> <「お客さんが驚くようなことをしないといけない。今は面白いと言ってもらえても,5年後,10年後に忘れられてしまったら,自分達も寂しんじゃないだろうか?」という話をして,「心に刺さる○○」というテーマでアイデア出しを進めました。> (< >内「「スーパーマリオ <多くの人に共感していただけるものというのは、それだけ多くの人にわかりやすく、伝わりやすいということにもなるので、非常に大事なんです。ただ、ともすると、共感できるものはあって当たり前のものにもなってしまう。でも、『マリオ』シリーズはいろいろなことにチャレンジするタイトルでもあるので、多くの方に理解していただける“共感”は大事にしつつも、それだけではなく、ちゃんと驚きを与えることを肝に銘じて作るようにしようと。> 『マリオオデッセイ』はテーマを「共感」から「心に刺さる」に変更して制作された模様です。またシンプルである、分かりやすい、『NewスーパーマリオWii』の世界観で統一するという、僕が解釈の1つとして上げた「共感」はある種、正解だったように思えます。  更��小泉さんはマリオは立ち止まってはダメだととも仰っていました。マリオは「共感」という縛りで立ち止まってしまっていた、僕はそう感じました。 「心に刺さる」ことを目指して再び走り始めたマリオ、『マリオオデッセイ』は従来の箱庭探索型3Dマリオとは拠点の廃止やパワームーンの集め方等、一味違ったシステムで新たな3Dマリオの遊び方を提供しつつも、まだ見たことも無い新たに繰り広げられるマリオの世界に挑む、正に「心に刺さる」大いなる旅を楽しめるゲームに仕上がっていました。 僕はマリオにとって一番必要なのは、ドキドキワクワクする新しい事への挑戦だと思っています。シリーズ作品であったとしても、新要素を加えたり、システムを改善したりしながらも、マリオとプレイヤーが見た事の無い世界へ冒険に出る楽しさとちょっぴりの不安。『マリオオデッセイ』は正にそれで、小泉さんも「心に刺さる驚き」、「チャレンジするタイトル」、「立ち止まってしまってはダメ」と仰っており、同じ事を考えていたのだなぁと、これこそが共感だと感じることができました。  しかし、結局この長期に渡って行われたあの縛りはどういう意味を成し得たのでしょうか。確かにマリオはどうあるべきか、何を守るべきかを考えるのは必要な事だったのかもしれませんが、その名の通り縛る事によってマリオの可能性を潰してしまっただけだった、僕にはそう見えます。「共感」を得る代償にしてはあまりにも大きすぎた、そもそも縛る事によって本当にプレイヤーに「共感」が生まれたのか、それが疑問です。 <共感とは「“元々の自分”を前提とし、相手の中に“自分の一部”を見出すこと」とも言い換えられる。> <私は、まさにその点に危うさを感じていた。共感する当人に、特に変化がないからだ。共感に従って自分の考えや境遇、感覚と同じものだけを追い求めれば、人はどんどん凝り固まり、先鋭化する。共感には「物事が自分の思っていた通りだったときに抱く感覚」という側面があるのだ。> この記事を書くにあたって、悩んでいた時にこのコラムを読む機会ができ、非常に納得する事ができました。マリオは「共感」だけに強く拘った作り方をした結果、縮こまってしまったのだと。多くのプレイヤーと「共感」を得る為に始めた事なのに、先鋭化して「共感」できなくなってしまっていた。マリオ、任天堂からの一方的な「共感」だけの押し付けになっていたのです。  それに加えて2012年以降、WiiUの不振から始まり、ソーシャルゲームの流行、縛りや「スーパーマリオ」本編を短期的に発売していく内に、ソフトの売上からにしてもマリオは世間から飽きられてしまった、僕にはあの時期がそう見えました。  逆に『マリオオデッセイ』は「共感」を大切にしながらも「心に刺さる」という作り方に変えていきました。そしてマリオの世界は再び広がっていったのです。『マリオオデッセイ』はNintendo of America投稿の初報トレーラーの再生数が発売前に2000万を突破する、国内でも歴代3Dマリオ最高初動を記録する等、世界中の人がどれだけ期待し楽しんでいるのかが一目瞭然です。勿論そこには『スーパーマリオサンシャイン』以来の箱庭探索型である事や、Nintendo Switch本体にブームがあった事が加速させた部分はあるでしょう。しかし、世界中のプレイヤーがマリオに「心に刺さる」、差異という刺激を求めていたのは明らかです。  また、「共感」にしても「心に刺さる」にしても、僕はそれの必要性と、両立させるバランスが大事���、それと同時に中途半端にするのは駄目だと思いました。僕はマリオファンでいるだけあって、ゲームとしての面白さは勿論ですが、キャラクターや世界観、ストーリー等に魅了されてマリオが好きでいるので、どうしてもそちら側の要素に期待してしまうところがあります。『マリオオデッセイ』にはその面ではとても残念なところがありました。  『マリオオデッセイ』はかつてないマリオの世界でプレイヤーを惹きつかせた作品ですが、『マリオギャラクシー1』のようなストーリー性は薄く、どちらかというと2Dマリオや『マリオ3Dランド』のノリに近い内容となっていました。それ自体に関しては惜しいと思うものの、悪い事ではないと思います。僕が気にしているのはポリーンの登場と彼女絡みの件です。ポリーンはマリオの恋人若しくは友だちという設定を持ったキャラクターです。どことなく意味深ですが、二人は友好関係にあるのは明らかで、作中でも「伝統のフェスティバル!」で二人が舞台となったあの街で出会った事を示唆しています。しかしどういう訳だかポリーンはマリオに対して終始敬語で赤の他人のようになっています。  インタビューによるとポリーンは都市の国というステージを作り、それなら彼女をという形で出演が叶い、主題歌「Jump Up, Super Star!」を担当するという大役にもなりました。しかし、これではポリーンの出演という衝撃で「心に刺さる」事があったものの、マリオとの関係がパッとせず僕の知っているポリーンじゃないという気持ちができ「共感」を得る事はできませんでした。ポリーンを出演させた以上、彼女はマリオとの友好関係にある設定の人物なのだからそこはしっかりやってほしい、ストーリー性を抑える��しても、やるべき事があっただろうという事です。  僕はこういったストーリー性を持たせるなら、しっかりガッツリやって欲しい、無いなら全く無くていい、そしてどちらにすべきかをゲームによって正しく判別して欲しいと願っています。例えば2Dマリオはステージを駆け抜けサクサクとテンポ良くドンドン進んで行くのが醍醐味です。そこに長いテキストやイベントムービーは必要無いのです。「心に刺さる」要素ならば世界観で魅せて欲しいです。逆に「ペーパーマリオ」や「マリオ&ルイージRPG」のようなRPGタイトルには物語を進行させる為のモチベーション、楽しみとしてストーリーが必要です。  最後に、『マリオオデッセイ』は「心に刺さる」ゲームとして世に出回る事ができましたが、気になるのはこれからの未来に発売されるマリオゲームです。数あるマリオゲームの中でも、「スーパーマリオ」本編と「マリオカート」シリーズは任天堂自身が開発を手掛けているので、所謂やりたい放題なのですが、それ以外のシリーズではどうしても任天堂に厳しい目で見られながら作る事になります。その事によるキャラクターや世界観の独自性の差ができていたのはその頃のマリオゲームと『マリオカート8』を比較すれば良く分かるでしょう。  『NewスーパーマリオWii』の大ヒットにより「共感」を重視した制作体制に変わった為、同様に大ヒットした『マリオオデッセイ』のように、これからは「心に刺さる」ように作られていく可能性はゼロではないと僕は信じています。例を挙げるとして春に発売される『マリオテニス エース』は凝ったデザインでライトアップされたテニスコートに、新規で作られたマリオ達のテニスウェア、ストーリーモードに加えて新しいテニスの舞台等をふんだんに用意してあります。これには期待できるのではないでしょうか。  マリオは元々、ここまで書いてきたようなキャラクターや世界観等によるデザイン性で勝負している作品ではありません。しかし、かと言って決して蔑ろにしていい要素ではありません。その事を、「心に刺さる」大切さを忘れられていたのが、ここ数年のマリオゲームなのでしょう。また、チャレンジし走り続ける、常にゲームのトップにいる「心に刺さる」マリオを遊べる事を願います。

At 12 went to Mrs. Best, and sat quietly talking till 2 when Mrs. D- [Duffin] and Norcliffe came and we all staid near an hour - happening to mention having heard of Norcliffe in Cheshire from Mrs. Wilbraham this brought on the subject of Lawton - Norcliffe and Mrs. Best joined in unqualified abuse - much of it about as true of Mr. C.L- [Charles Lawton] as of myself - Norcliffe would call him the monster, having a great curiosity to gaze at him as such, and maintained that M- [Mariana] was a broken spirited woman, and so thought Charlotte - I said a little and positively denied 1 or 2 things I knew to be false, but N- [Norcliffe] said what could I know of him compared with those who had lived near L- [Lawton] all their lives, and he was evidently getting into such a rage, that I thought it best to give in, and let him keep as calm as possible - thought I to myself, is this madness? If I must live with N- [Norcliffe] or C- [Charles] give me the latter out and out - well might poor Miss W- [Wilbraham] say at Rhode, he really frightened her - How little did he guess even milder comments of Mrs. W- [Wilbraham] whom however he could tire by his stories and incessant talking, and astonish by his uncalled for account of the singularity of his sister IN- [Isabella Norcliffe] How vanity and self-sufficiency do blind us to the impressions that we ourselves make on others! the 2 Bests really clever girls at heraldry and blazoning, writing black letter versifying drawing etc. Rose keeps a nice sort of journal, and was my favourite of the 2 for perhaps the 1st. time in her life -
Called at the H.S.B-s' [Henry Stephen Belcombes'] - not at home - then went to the Gilbert Cromptons for Mrs. D- [Duffin] to invite Mr. G-C- [Gilbert Crompton] (left alone) to dinner tomorrow - engaged as he afterwards came here into Micklegate to tell us - then went to a shop or 2 - went to see Mrs. Cooke's fashions - (Mrs. and Miss (Fanny) Hale and Miss Jane Percival there) and got home at 4 3/4 - during the morning had called on me Mrs. and Miss Yorke, Mrs. Anne and Miss Gage, Mrs. and Miss Swann, Mrs. and the Miss Prestons, formerly of Flasby -
Dinner at 5 1/2 - Mr. D- [Duffin] and I slept afterwards - tea at 8 - came to my room at 10 1/2 having talked of my last summer's tour, and said to Mrs. D- [Duffin] in her own room that Mrs. Best had offhand said 'if she takes him abroad she will kill him', which seemed, at once, to put an end to all abroad-going plans - fine but gloomyish day -

One of the first things I came to take issue with in the new car is its radio reception being rather poor. I made some arrangements with my father's help and let it be his decision for shopping around to find something new to go into the vehicle. He did find something rather nice, but it wasn't until the appointed time for the procedure came that everyone realized that the radio wouldn't fit - it was too big. Thankfully, something of standard size was available and was able to be put into the car with a supporting carriage. It works fine. All I wanted was a headphone jack and better radio reception, and this provides it. Out of time otherwise. Long day with company over, had a good breakfast, time to sleep. Songs were still rather good this week overall.
