( it's where i am- frankly the Better House of Congress too while we're at it ). sadly i don't know what politics or party u have and i mostly scurry round the democrat side of the aisle more than anything, so i might not be able to help u that much, but i can try to give you some good ones!
@/gowestyoungman is a good source for news, and i'm personally a fan of @/mattbradydaggeurotype but @/geopeteralexhealy has some great portraits! obviously anyone has to follow @/oldhickory if they're a dem ( or even a whig ) they have great posts, lots of drama and thought provoking articles. a vv funny scroll. @/greatcompromiser is on the opposite side as a whig, but always sophisticated in their arguments, with nice shitposts in between to lighten the mood if you're uneasy about the american system.
@/jquincy and @/oldbullion are mostly serious blogs and if you're a westward expansion fellow, they're top blogs for u to follow. a bit hard at times, but personally i think they have great humor to make up for it ( unlike @/castironman though if you're here for what he posts all the more strength to u i suppose). @/redfoxkinderhook is also a good blog but they rarely post ( and never anything personal). @/godlikedan is my personal favorite blog. they have everything on there- drama, shitposts, detailed analysis, longposts, important info, aesthetics, etc.

Hello all, Frederick Douglass here. As you might be aware by now, The Liberator and I have since parted. The reason for this is due to several irreconcilable differences, some political, some personal. The drama has since cooled down, but due to the blowout from our conflict, William Lloyd Garrison and I have agreed to since part ways. I am currently running @/thenorthstar on multiple platforms available in my bio.
Garrison and I are still part of the abolitionist movement together, so if you're worried about the harm this might cause to our end goal of emancipation for enslaved people in the United States and the complete destruction of the slave system as it stands today, do not worry. I will be reposting a catalogue of my speeches and writings here that were originally in The Liberator- which you may feel free to mute as you wish. My advocacy for human rights will proceed as normal.

James McCune Smith, born in 1813, was a graduate of the New York African Free School. It is clear, from the fragments of his schoolwork that survive, that Smith was an exceptionally bright student. Smith was chosen to deliver a speech to General Lafayette on his trip to New York, a great honor. From other samples of his work, we can glean his prodigious talent in both writing and drawing. Perhaps it was his undeniable status as a star student that inspired Charles C. Andrews, the school's white schoolmaster, to cast him in a dialogue performed in 1822. In this skit, Smith plays a good student who reprimands his classmate for persistent tardiness. When Smith learns that his friend's lateness is due to the negligence of his parents, he is indignant and extols the virtues of education and the rules that undergird that education at the New York African Free School. Although we do not know how this skit was received, we might imagine that parents in the audience might have found the exchange offensive.
After his graduation, James McCune Smith became the first African American to receive a medical degree. Unable to attend college in the United States because he was black, Smith entered Glasgow University in Scotland and earned three academic degrees, including a doctorate in medicine. When Smith returned to New York, his intellect and energy made him an instrumental figure in an emerging black community. A prominent abolitionist, Smith worked with Frederick Douglass to establish the National Council of the Colored People. He also maintained close ties to classmate Henry Highland Garnet, praising his incendiary speech urging slaves to rebel, even when other members of the abolitionist community objected strongly to Garnet's sentiments.
Some of Smith's published works include "A Lecture on the Haitian Revolution" (1841) and "The Destiny of the People of Color" (1843), as well as a biographical introduction to Henry Highland Garnet's A Memorial Discourse. He also wrote the introduction to Frederick Douglass's My Bondage and My Freedom. James McCune Smith died on November 17, 1865

If we look over the dates, places and men for which this honor is claimed, we shall find that not Carolina, but Virginia, not Fort Sumter, but Harpers Ferry, and the arsenal, not Col. Anderson, but John Brown, began the war that ended American slavery and made this a free Republic. Until this blow was struck, the prospect for freedom was dim, shadowy and uncertain. The irrepressible conflict was one of words, votes and compromises. "When John Brown stretched forth his arm the sky was cleared. The time for compromises was gone - the armed hosts of freedom stood face to face over the chasm of a broken Union - and the clash of arms was at hand. Harriet Jacobs
Harriet Jacobs (l. c. 1813-1897) was a former slave, abolitionist, and author of Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl (1861), her autobiography, describing her life as a slave in North Carolina, her flight to freedom in the North, and her experiences there. Her book is among the most important primary documents on slavery in 19th-century America.
As Jacobs felt ashamed of some of the experiences she endured as a slave, she chose to publish the work under a pen name, Linda Brent, and the work was edited by the famous writer and abolitionist Lydia Maria Child (l. 1802-1880). It was well-received upon publication, and, among abolitionist circles anyway, Jacobs was accorded great respect as its author.
Jacobs had arranged the publication of the work herself, and it fell out of print after 1862. It was only rediscovered in the 1960s, with the advent of the Civil Rights Movement and Women's Movement in the USA. Although initially recognized as an autobiography, and Jacobs as its author, in 1861, it was understood in the 1960s as an anti-slavery novel by Child until this view was corrected by the American historian Jean Fagan Yellin (l. 1930-2023).
Today, the work is considered on par with the greatest slave narratives, such as Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass (1845) by former slave and leading abolitionist Frederick Douglass (l. c. 1818-1895) and Ellen and William Craft's Running a Thousand Miles for Freedom (1860).
Unlike many others, including those of Mary Prince (l. c. 1788 to c. 1833), Harriet Tubman (l. c. 1822-1913) and Sojourner Truth (l. c. 1797-1883) – which are as-told-to works – Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl was written by Jacobs herself and so was not subject to the criticism leveled against the others as exaggerations by abolitionists of a slave's condition.
Early Life
Harriet Jacobs was born a slave in Edenton, North Carolina, c. 1813, the daughter of Delilah (a slave of one Margaret Horniblow) and Daniel Jacobs (slave to one Andrew Knox). Her parents tried their best to shield her from the reality of slavery, as Jacobs notes:
I was born a slave; but I never knew it till six years of happy childhood had passed away…I was so fondly shielded that I never dreamed I was a piece of merchandise, trusted to for safe keeping, and liable to be demanded of them at any moment.

Jacobs had a younger brother, John, and was especially attached to her grandmother, a free Black woman, Molly Horniblow. As a young girl, she was taught to read, write, and sew by her mistress, Margaret. Jacobs' mother died when she was six years old, and Margaret treated her as a daughter. When Margaret died in 1825, she left young Harriet to her niece, Mary Matilda Norcom, who was only three years old, and so Mary's father, Dr. James Norcom, became Harriet's master. It was not until she came to the Norcom residence that she understood she was a slave and had no control over her own life.

Frank Castle was not used to competition in his line of work. Sure Red was a pain about the ‘no killing’ thing whenever their paths crossed, but there weren’t exactly a lot of people (except the scumbags he was after) getting in the way of his work. That was until tonight.
The HVAC system of the building hummed in his ears as he stalked the halls of the 72nd floor of the Skyward Airlines corporate offices. Every corner he turned led to a different executive suite, each one more plush and lavish than the last with modern furnishings and stunning views of the New York skyline. Not a soul was around to enjoy the luxury and he was growing more agitated with every room he entered that turned up empty. The bastard had to be in here somewhere.
He took the stairs two at a time to the 67th floor, wondering if C Suite assholes like Herman Douglass even knew his company had space on the lower floor, where all the underpaid employees - regular people with rent to pay and families to feed, worked overtime to make sure he could buy a yacht that sat empty docked in the Hudson most of the year.
He sighed with relief as he turned the corner and saw a light coming from under a door in the long hallway ahead. A woman’s voice giggled from behind it and he heard his target hum in agreement.
Having an affair with his younger secretary, how cliche.
Frank waited patiently for a few moments, listening to see if there was any chance the woman would slip out of the room and leave him the opportunity he was there for in the first place.
“Oh darling, there’s a special gift for you I forgot on my desk upstairs. Why don’t you be a dear and go get it?” the male voice said from behind the door
Perfect.
“Oh yes, Mr. Douglass!” she agreed with another giggle
She didn’t see Frank standing in the shadows waiting as she flung open the door and traipsed down the hallway, hips swinging as she went.
Frank took the opportunity and slipped into the conference room where Douglass sat, leaned back in a chair with his feet on the conference table. He had a smug expression on his pudgy, red face as he undid another button on his dress shirt.
The click of the gun alarmed him as he spun in his seat, sputtering and scrambling to his feet to meet his visitor.
“What… what could I possibly be… The Punisher… but I’m not some low life.. I mean, I…” Douglass stammered
“Shut it Douglass, like all those heroin strains being laced with whatever fucked up shit that’s killing people ain’t getting transported on your planes.”
“I don’t know anything about heroin transportation you must have the wrong…”
Bang.
The sound of a gunshot rang out through the conference room and Herman Douglass flinched, ready to meet his maker.
But it seemed as if time stopped and both he and the man who fired the gun stared at the bullet, suspended in mid air.
A woman appeared between them, holding the bullet between her index finger and thumb.
“Who the hell—?”
But before he could finish his sentence, she spun around and landed her fist right on Douglass’ temple, rendering him unconscious as he slumped against the table.
She turned to face Frank, combat boots thumping on the grey carpet as she threw the bullet on the floor and stepped towards him.
“This one is mine, Castle.” she exclaimed, stepping on her tip toes to nearly press her nose to his. “There’s more to this heroin transport than just him. I need him alive. For now.”
Frank could see the anger in her eyes. After all, it was about all he could see of her. The cowl of her grey athletic zip up and a black beanie covered most of her face, and her black cargo pants hid the rest.
“Can’t let that happen.” Frank replied
“And why not?”
“Cause he’s been facilitating some nasty drug trafficking, the kind that’s been gettin’ people killed.”
“I’m aware of that. Why do you think I’m here?”
“Honestly, not a fuckin’ clue. Don’t even know who you are.”
“You don’t have to. I’m here about his crimes too and he will be dealt with. But later.”
The woman waved a keycard in Franks face. Herman Douglass’ work keycard to be exact.
“This is my ticket to figuring out just who is paying him to move the drugs. But I need him alive.”
“So I’m just supposed to go on my merry way then? Huh? That it?” Frank asked “Look lady, I have no idea who you are or how you stopped my bullet out of thin air or just… appeared. But I ain’t about to just take the word of some stranger that he’ll end up dead and not just kill him myself right now.”
The woman shrugged.
“Just stay out of my way, Castle.”
Frank barely had time to react as the woman disappeared before his eyes just as she had been before. He had no idea where she was until his gun was out of his hand and striking him against the forehead. Then it was black.
The alleyway where Frank woke up smelled of hot garbage, reeking of a New York summer air that lingered in your nose for days. His head pounded as he tried to recall how he’d ended up here.
A woman, who was there then not? No that couldn’t be right…

Capri Donahue, Frederick Douglass High’s lovely, lovely queen bee. She’d be the death of you, in good ways and bad. Beneath that bubbly and sometimes snarky, facade, Capri was a big ‘ol softie. The sweetest partner one could ask for. Anyone would be lucky to call Capri theirs. Well, you would. You were the lucky one to be dating the Capricorn Donahue.
“Hey, baby.” Capri says, “Where the heck are you? I’ve been waiting here for like, five minutes. You’re usually waiting right outside for me to pick you up. Are you alright?”
“I’m coming down the stairs now, sorry.”
You hung up, quickly made your way downstairs and out the front door. You sat in the front with Capri, like always. “Is everything okay?” Capri asked cautiously, you seemed a little tense.
“Everything is perfect.” You replied, each word laced with sarcasm.
“Babe.” She sighs, starting to drive away.
“It’s stupid.” You revealed to her, “I got my period.”
“Oh.” Capri says, relieved. “Then are you sure you wanna go—”
“The school will call my mom if I just don’t show up, Capri. It’s fine, it sucks— but I’ll be fine.”
“Do you need anything?”
You shook your head, “Already took a painkiller. That should hold me over till school’s done. Thanks, though.”
She keeps her hand on your thigh for the whole drive, as she always does. You especially appreciated this little gesture today. It comforted you. Capri stops the car right near the school, knowing that you’d get off here and walk the short distance to school on your own, rather than together with her. You appreciated your anonymity and would rather have it for as long as you could, Capri didn’t mind that and just went along with what you wanted immediately.
You two were in homeroom then trig class together, after that she went off to home ec while you were in social studies. Anyway, you tended to see her a few times throughout the day in classes. But that depended on schedule so some days, you saw her more often, other days…not so much.
Today was one of those days where you ran into her more often. Not because of classes but because at lunch, while the cheer squad was practicing, the football team was also practicing in the field right near them. You walked onto the field with the team, settling down on the bleacher. The team gathered in front of you, awaiting your instructions.
“Okay, guys— since coach will only be here in the afternoon, y’all are stuck with me.” You started, “Line up. Start with: Calf stretch, walking lunges, side steps. Stay hydrated! Let’s go, let’s go!” There was some chatter, but the team got right to it. You didn’t care if they chatted while doing warmups or not. At least they were still doing what you said. You watched them in the meantime, making sure they weren’t completely goofing off or if someone were to get injured. Your eyes wandered a little bit, landing on the cheer squad. Capri spots you, her face lit up just a tad, a small smile on it. You smiled back, quickly resuming your task on hand.
Lunch was forty minutes, and when the sports teams had games or tournaments coming up, they’d spend about twenty minutes of their break practicing. Everything was going well until right at the end, the team lost focus because a guy told two of his buddies to check out that cheerleader’. You bit back a scoff, it was typical of them sometimes to ogle at the cheerleaders. You couldn’t care less. Because you’d tried telling them to stop, but they never listen.
“Dude! You should totally ask her out, Brett!”
“Totally, you’re a football player, Capri’s a cheerleader. You guys would be perfect together.”
Wait— Capri? Your Capri? Your eyes darted to Capri’s direction and saw the trio of boys jogging up to her. Capri didn’t seem to really react. You blew your whistle, screaming, “Brett, Marcus, Ray! Five minutes to go— what the hell?!”
“Yo, chill out, y/n. We were just gonna be gone for a minute.” Brett laughs, throwing his hands up in mock defeat.
You rolled your eyes at them, glancing at Capri again. She didn’t even pay any attention to you, already tumbling across the grass. You sigh, plopping back down on the bleacher, recounting the number of water bottles in the crates.
For the rest of the day, the image of Capri being hit on by Brett and buds kept running through your head. It annoyed you to no end, more so right now as you were on your period. Capri knew you saw her, she didn’t even acknowledge you in the slightest. Heck, she didn’t even acknowledge that that’d happened. You didn’t even get a text from her to assure you that it didn’t mean anything to her. Not that you didn’t trust her, you did. Your mind was just racing right now and you hated it.
Staring at the whiteboard in your American History class, you started seeing double. Then, your hearing gets muffled and the volume amplifies. You hear laughter, snickering…you clasped your hands together, fingers intertwined as you pulled at them irritatedly. When your breathing got heavy and laboured, that’s when you couldn’t take it anymore and bolted out of the classroom and to the bathroom. A hand was on your wrist as you pulled it away with your movement of standing up from your desk— Capri’s.

You stayed in a stall until you calmed down, well, you stayed in there until you heard footsteps outside the stall.
“y/n?”
“Uh— Darby…?”
“Yeah, it’s me.” She says back, “Are you…alright?”
“I guess?” You sniffed, standing up and unlocking the stall door.
“Are you sure? Do you need anything?”
“Yeah. Yeah, I uh— my mind just drifted and I started thinking about just…everything and got really not good. But thanks for checking on me.”
She walked back to class with you, without saying another word, but you could feel her gaze on you constantly. She was worried, and so was Capri. You could feel her staring too, but you didn’t want to look at her.
When school was over, you didn’t have a ride home and walking home would take you truthfully an hour. So, you had no choice but to go with Capri. You waited near her car since her last class for that day wasn’t with you. Once she got in, you quickly did so as well and she started to drive in silence.
“What happened?”
“Nothing.”
“We both know something happened.”
“So then why do you have to ask?” You snarled, looking out the window while your head leaned against it.
“Fine, don’t talk to me then. Just keep everything to yourself.”
Shit, that hurt. The cramps, and what she had just said to you. You didn’t mean to snap at her, you were just feeling irritated by the cramps that were returning now that the pain meds have been wearing off, and whatever happened at lunch.
You notice her driving right by your house, but you couldn’t be bothered. When her car stops in the familiar garage, you got out right when she did. “I don’t know what you want from me.” You grumbled, side stepping her to enter the house via the garage door.
Capri takes in a deep breath, chewing on her bottom lip to stop herself from scoffing. Or screaming. Or both. You ran up to her room, and she catches up so quickly. “What’s with this whole thing going on right now, y/n?” She asks after closing the door behind herself.
Your eyes flicked up to meet hers. Her tone was harsh but her gaze was soft. “What’d I do? Did something happen in the classes I’m not in?”
You wanted to tell her, you wanted to so badly. But instead, what happened first was you bursting into tears. With the pain and the hormones in a rage, you couldn’t control your emotions too well. “Shit.” Capri mutters, sitting down beside you. You fell against her, head on her chest as she held it. And you, close. “It’s okay.” She hushed, “You can tell me anything, baby.”
“I saw you— at the lunch practice. Brett asked you out and you didn’t even react. You acted like it was the most normal thing, not even acknowledging that I was there. I definitely overreacted because I was the one who asked you if we could not go public—”
“y/n, I didn’t react so he couldn’t react. He wouldn’t have anything else to say to me. I didn’t look at you, because if I did, that would be giving them hints to who I was seeing. And that I was seeing someone. Which isn’t something you wanted. But maybe now you do.”
You sigh shakily, “I’m sorry, I’m just in a terrible mood and I can’t control it.” You cried quietly, “And it hurts— so I just blew up. I’m sorry, I should’ve just talked to you when I got to instead of keeping things to myself. You’re right.”
“No, I also shouldn’t have been so snarky. You didn’t need that, any of that tone. It was wrong of me, I need to remember that I’m talking to my girl and some musty ass boy that only wants to see me naked.”
“I’m sorry— I—”
“y/n, please. Stop that, I get it.” She presses a kiss to your head, “Don’t keep saying sorry. You don’t need to apologise over and over again. I hear you, it’s okay. We’re good.”
“I love you.” You told her, eyes meeting hers once again.
“I love you too, baby.” She says, stroking your hair, “Your painkiller must’ve wore off. I’ll go get you another. Okay?”
“Okay.” You agreed, she carefully manoeuvres herself to get out from behind you and then off the bed.
She comes back a minute or so later with the pill and a glass, well a mug— your favourite mug, of water. You took it without hesitation and set the mug down on her nightstand. Curling up comfortably under her covers. She was still standing, and watching you. “Want me to cuddle with you?” She asks cheekily. You nod, face pressed against the pillow, “Yes please.”
“Could you make me pasta for dinner?” You asked meekly as her arms wrapped around you.
“Mhm.” She agrees in a heartbeat, “Of course.”
“Yay.” You let a chuckle slip. She plants a kiss on your shoulder, “I know you’re sleepy so just rest for a while, alright?”
You nod, she was fully pressed up against you as you shut your eyes.

You’d spent the night at Capri’s, and once you two got to school, you and Capri walked into the building together— hand in hand. And you, were even wearing her clothes. Clothes that she’s worn before, and recognisably hers. Not comfy loungewear that she’d only be donning at home.
“Capri!” Brett exclaimed, happily running over. She intentionally swung your intertwined hands a little bit exaggeratedly.
“Yesterday at practice I asked if you’d like to go out with me Saturday? But you didn’t say anyth—”
“Exactly.” Capri smiled sweetly.
“Oh, who’s this?” He asks.
“Oh, her? I dunno. Who do you think she is, Brett?” Capri chuckles, fingers still linked with yours. She raises that up briefly then put it down, letting your hand go. Smoothly, she cups your cheek and gave you a kiss. Right in the middle of the hallway. “Thought I’d show you since you guys seem to be such visual learners, hm? Her telling you all to stay focused on warmups wasn’t clear enough? Want her to show you guys how to do them? Even though she’d already done that months ago?”
“I— I— uh…”
“Stop it. Don’t look at her. Look at me. I’m gonna say this once and if you forget it, that’s not my problem. Don’t you ever look at her, don’t look at me, most importantly, don’t talk to me. And definitely not her. Stay away from us.”

Henry Box Brown
Henry Box Brown (l. c. 1815-1897) was an enslaved African American who became famous as "the man who mailed himself to freedom" after he had himself shipped in a box from Richmond, Virginia, to abolitionists in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 29 March 1849. Afterwards, he became a popular speaker on the anti-slavery lecture circuit and, later, an entertainer.
Henry Brown was born a slave c. 1815 in Louisa County, Virginia, and, at the age of 15, he was sent to Richmond and, as he was especially dexterous in handling tobacco, was hired out by his master to a local tobacco factory. As usual with such arrangements, Brown was allowed to keep some of the money he earned, most going to his master.
He was married to a slave named Nancy, and they had three children. Brown paid his master a regular fee to prevent him from selling Nancy and the children, but his master sold them anyway to a minister in North Carolina. After years of enduring the cruelties of slavery, this betrayal was too much to bear, and Brown began trying to think of ways to escape to the free states in the North.
Mailed to Freedom & Later Life
With the help of his friend, Dr. Smith, and a sympathetic storekeeper who agreed to help for the sum of $86.00, Brown was shut up in a wooden box 3 feet x 2.67 feet x 2 feet (91 x 81 x 61 cm) and mailed to the famous Quaker abolitionist Passmore Williamson (l. 1822-1895) in Philadelphia. He traveled in the box, into which he had bored air holes, for 27 hours, arriving safely and, according to his autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Henry Box Brown, Written by Himself (1851), after recovering his senses, greeted his new friends with "How do you do, gentlemen?" and then burst into a song of praise.
He was afterwards known as Henry Box Brown and turned his escape into his livelihood, re-enacting it for audiences on the anti-slavery lecture circuit. Abolitionist Frederick Douglass (l. c. 1818-1895) disapproved of Brown sharing his story as he felt it prevented others from escaping using his same method.
When the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 was passed by Congress, giving slaveholders the right to reclaim escaped slaves, Brown went to England where he supported himself as a hypnotist, magician, and entertainer, traveling with a large panorama he used to help tell the story of his 1849 escape. He married, had a family, and remained in England for 25 years, returning to the US in 1875 and continuing to perform as a showman and mesmerist. He moved to Toronto, Canada, in 1886, still performing his shows, and died there of natural causes in 1897.
The first edition of Narrative of the Life of Henry Box Brown was published in Boston in 1849, and the better-known edition in Manchester, England, in 1851. It became a bestseller, and Brown regularly drew large audiences to his shows. There is no evidence to suggest Brown was literate when he arrived in Philadelphia or, later, in Boston, and the 1849 work is thought to have been ghostwritten by the abolitionist Charles Stearns as an as-told-to autobiography (Delbanco, 215). There is evidence, however, that Brown could read and write by the time the 1851 edition was published in England, and he is thought to have directly contributed to that work.
Brown's ingenuity in escaping slavery has been compared with Ellen and William Craft's Running a Thousand Miles for Freedom (1860), which tells the story of the formerly enslaved Crafts' escape with Ellen disguised as a Southern gentleman and William as her slave. Both are regarded as important works in the genre of the slave narrative of 19th-century America.
