Last Monday of the Week 2025-05-19
Captain, it's Monday
Listening: New Drumfish single, Mint! I'm not a huge fan of all of Drumfish but I do like this one and I'm looking forward to the upcoming album.
Drumfish is among the many weird little South African rock bands I have in my collection, they're from Johannesburg.
The paper is a little flawed in places and I would ignore it more if it weren't for the test subjects which were English Majors.
Reading: Read that mini-paper They Don't Read Very Well which I'm putting here because it's funny.
Look. Okay. It's really funny to hear about someone pursuing a literature degree who when faced with the sentence:
As much mud in the streets, as if the waters had but newly retired from the face of the earth, and it would not be wonderful to meet a Megalosaurus, forty feet long or so, waddling like an elephantine lizard up Holborn Hill.
imagines an actual dinosaur is in London for some reason.
Also started a sci-fi short story compendium that I also picked up because it sounded funny, which is Future Visions: Original Science Fiction Inspired By Microsoft.
There are some big names in here, who I even like! I do not denigrate getting that Microsoft bag. They got Seanan McGuire, they got Elizabeth Bear, they got Ann Leckie, they got David Brin. I have read like the first three and so far they are mostly pretty mid. Now of course the whole point of a short story compendium is that it's mostly mid and there's like one that gets you. Haven't found the one yet!
I feel like some of this might have been edited for like. Normie appeal? One of the things that sci-fi authors can do in short stories is not explain shit, and so far at least there's a lot more explaining than I like in my short stories. Simply put my ass in the situation I'll figure it out.
Watching: Not a whole lot! I saw a video on here and found the source, which was this Japanese TV show where people build elaborate suits and props to play out various objects and scenarios and fell down the rabbit hole of watching those. Here's an incredibly ridiculous one about playing pool:
youtube
Playing: Echo Point Nova which I picked up after listening to the new Austin Underscore Walker podcast Side Story. I have never listened to the previous Austin Underscore Walker video game podcasts but I figured I may as well get in before there's a backlog on this one and so far it is definitely giving me things to think about.
Echo Point Nova is a finicky high speed agility shooter in which you whip around on a bunch of floating islands on a hoverboard and grappling hook, shooting at a bunch of guys with a suite of projectile weapons. It is really nicely tuned to feel satisfying to play, landing a shot feels good at two meters or a hundred, and while I have glitched through the levels a couple times that's made up for by the levels allowing you to manouver in totally insane ways as you try to progress.
youtube
I am playing on the Hardest Difficulty which I think is good? I might drop down to normal if I keep getting owned by the fireball enemies. There is a main campaign which is what I am doing and there is also a sort of light randomizer where they drop you in a run at a random location with random guns and you try to build up a suite of powerups that will let you destroy everything in your path. It's neat.
Bangin' soundtrack, also
Making: Totally rearranging my whole entire desk which means I now have printing projects in the CAD pipeline. I put my whole monitor up on a big monitor stand to make some room and improve my ergonomics which means I now have a big wooden arch I can use to hang object from. Working on some printed designs for speaker mounts, an audio interface thing, card reader holders, some cable runs, and also finally getting this keyboard onto low profile switches, when those eventually arrive.
Tools and Equipment: You can just add sugar to food if it needs to be sweeter. This is an essential trick that a lot of people feel weird about. I made some mixed beans curry the other day and I put like a full tablespoon of sugar in there that's normal.

Lennox Laurrier & The
Subtle Art of Influence
Tucked behind a modest booth at the St. Vincent Jewelry Center is a legacy being quietly recut. Lennox Laurrier, armed with a G.I.A. education and an eye for precision, is redefining her family’s custom jewelry business from the bench up by balancing private clients and L.A.’s social circuit with seamless control. This isn’t inheritance, it's her own foundation set stone by stone.
Complex Magazine, July 2025

The name that echoes through Los Angeles high society is the same one humbly displayed above the glass cases on the first floor of the St. Vincent Jewelry Center, the West Coast’s shrine to everything gleaming and precision cut. It blends in among the neighboring booths, but what’s inside sets it unmistakably apart. Vivid stones anchor each display like exclamation points in a sea of frozen starlight, each one caged in carbon. The sight of it commands your attention just as much as the lively man behind the counter does.
Adrian Laurrier doesn’t look like the type to have cut multimillion dollar deals over Kashmir sapphires or spent the last three decades carving masterpieces from raw stone. But looks, like diamonds, can be deceiving. With the sleeves of his shirt hiked past the elbows and a loupe always within reach, he runs the floor with the type of authority you only get from doing something long enough to stop second guessing. Adrian’s work built the Laurrier name into one of quiet power in the Diamond District; commonly recognized for custom pieces that whisper luxury instead of screaming it.
And now, his daughter Lennox is reshaping the legacy.
When I meet her, it’s just past 9 a.m., and the first floor is already flooded with the most experienced hagglers who make buying a competitive sport. She greets her father with a quiet exchange of updates, shorthand talk built from years of working side by side. A couple parcels from Sri Lanka are late. A three-stone emerald engagement ring was casted by a new hire and needs quality control. A long standing client is asking for pear shaped diamonds, “nothing too icy.” She scrolls through vendor emails while sipping an espresso that’s already gone lukewarm, flagging stones that have the potential to meet her standards for color and clarity at first glance. Her G.I.A. certification is an advantage in this world, equipping her with a mastery in the technical that allows her to spot heat treatment within seconds and tell you exactly why the price of gold is dropping or spiking.
Eventually we step away from the center and into the backroom of their private studio space, a short drive but worlds away from the bustle of St. Vincent. The room smells faintly of metal and lavender polish. The floor's scattered with tool cases, wax molds stacked upon themselves, loupe cloths, and filled sketchbooks scribbled with drawings and barely legible handwriting. A stark contrast to the tools of her workbench that are arranged with a surgical neatness. This is where the dirty work happens, she tells me. She sets a spinel in a platinum claw setting, adjusting the tension with a laser focus, each movement as deliberate as calligraphy.
Sometimes she sketches by hand, other times she works in CAD, building digital prototypes dependent on client and paternal approval to come to life. Her fingers move between appliances without hesitation: ring mandrel, bezel pusher, divider compass. A recent commission is laid out beside her in wax, a grown up take on the friendship bracelets you made at ten but this time with solid gold letter beads encrusted with diamonds. She shows me a tray of colorful melee gems, no bigger than grains of sand, that she’ll be pavé setting into the charms. It’s delicate work, and she loses herself in it. No posing nor performative hustle. Just a quiet obsession with getting it right.
By early afternoon, she’s gone again; off to meet clients behind closed doors. “Privacy’s everything,” she says, slipping on a pair of oversized tortoiseshell sunglasses. These aren’t red carpet walk-ins or casual buyers. Some of them are stylists, others private collectors, and a few are names I’d need to redact if this were a legal document. She won’t let me sit in, but I don’t take it personally. In her world, trust is the real currency, and Lennox has it in spades.
At sunset, she’s back home in West Hollywood, trading her bench apron for Cavalli. Her phone buzzes with dinner RSVPs and whispered club openings. She calls it networking, and maybe it is. Because while her family name opened the door, Lennox is shaping a presence all her own, one that exists beyond the showcase lights. A fixture in the city’s social circuit, she’s just as known for her underground art world ties as she is for her ability to source untreated Burmese moonstones.
“I know what this looks like,” she says, smiling, a little sharp. “But this isn’t just partying. It’s how I built this.” She says it like a statement of fact. Like a cut grade, or a carat weight. Something you can measure. Something you can prove.
And when she does open that showroom—rumored to be near Westwood Village, though she won’t confirm—you’ll know it. Not from a press release, but from the way the right people start showing up wearing pieces that don’t need introductions.

Last Monday of the Tuesday 2025-01-26
Got waylaid by situations, sorry. It will happen again.
Listening
The entirety of the BADBADNOTGOOD album BBNG2
Ya like jazz? Ya like big spooky electronic jazz? BBNG2 has it for you.
Reading
Working my way through Pale Fire by Nabokov. It's a very funny book, and also very odd. I can see why they call it perhaps the first hypertext!
The poem itself is 1000 lines in rhyming couplets with Vladimir "I Just Learned English And I'm Using The Whole Thing" Nabokov flair. It's very pleasing to read out loud.
Still working my way through the notes. The eBook I bought lacks the index so I had to pirate a copy for that. RIP Nabokov you would have loved Homestuck.
Watching
We had Megalopolis at Bad Movie Night. This movie is not good and a lot of it is straightforwardly shit but some of its failure modes are interesting.
This movie vacillates between looking pretty good and looking totally dogshit. I don't know if Coppola was trying to be like ooh what if I use an old fashioned looking rear projection technique for this elevator scene because Movies nah dog. It looks like garbage. A lot of this movie looks like it was a PS3 game cutscene, both in texture and in thoughtfulness of framing.
"Average man thinks about Rome every day" factoid actually a statistical error, References Coppola, who lives on a wine farm and thinks about Rome every twenty milliseconds, was an outlier adn should not have been counted. Seriously man so much of this movie is making a reference to a cool thing that Coppola has seen. Getting Adam Driver to deliver To Be Or Not To Be is so fucking tryhard.
Unfortunately when you write about utopias you put yourself in a very vulnerable position where you are saying not just that I think this way of living is good, but that everyone else should as well. This movie has some lines that would get you the Liberal award in Disco Elysium in two seconds flat. Adam Driver stands up at the end to give a huge speech about how we have to have a serious debate about the future. I pregamed this one with Metropolis (1927) and it also suffers from this. Yes Fritz I know you didn't know that the great war was gonna get a sequel but you can't just make a movie that's like "Communism is cool. But watch out!"
Look okay I hate big name actors in movies now. If you're going to sell your wine farm and spend one hundred million dollars making your thing, maybe don't spend so much money on candles Giancarlo Esposito. This is a thing that sucked about Cats as well. There's so many Guys in this movie and at no point did I ever want to call a guy by anything other than their real human name. I don't care if your name is Fundi that is Laurence Fucking Fishburne. Maybe get some normal actors, you have 100 million dollars, surely you can find some.
It's so funny to set a story about building fucking anything in New York City, The City That Hasn't Built Shit In 80 Years.
Playing
I've finished most of the major sidequests of Cyberpunk but I'm now doing Phantom Liberty and man the opening of Phantom Liberty is slick. I love it when a game makes you feel urgency even though there isn't any. It's one of my favourite video game tricks. Busy trying not to eat shit as I approach the crashed spaceship of the president of the New United States of America.
They finally put some good outfits in the game but they're all hidden inside Phantom Liberty! I walked up to the first clothing vendor in Dogtown and bought like half their stock. There's zany skintight leotards and cool helmets and bizzare transparent blazers oh my! Where is this shit in the main game.
Making
Spent a while debugging cursed filament on my printer, which was frustrating.
Ongoing design of small coffee table. Throwing away a lot of half-assed CAD models.
Tools and Equipment
If you have to use a mouse in a very confined space, you really should consider a trackball. Trackpads are all good and well but there's a reason why so many CAD platforms in workshops have a trackball superglued to an piece of sheet steel. One of my other projects is a lapboard for my HTPC setup and I have basically settled on "slotted in commodity trackball" as the ideal way to handle mouse input here.

Best Tools and Software Solar Contractors Use for Faster Permitting
Let’s be honest—solar permitting can be a major bottleneck. Whether it’s waiting on PE stamps, tracking down missing paperwork, or navigating AHJ-specific rules, the process can drag out even the simplest solar projects.
The good news? In 2025, there are more tools than ever to help solar contractors speed things up. From smarter design platforms to full-service permitting software, contractors now have powerful resources to cut down delays and get projects approved faster.
Here’s a hand-picked list of the best solar permit software and tools contractors are using this year to keep things moving—and profitable.
Vishtik – Your All-in-One Solar Permitting Partner
Best for: Fast permit design, engineering stamps, and PTO approvals
If you’re looking for a tool that handles everything from solar plan sets to PE review and utility PTO, Vishtik is the one to watch. It’s more than just software—it’s a full-on permit management platform built with contractors in mind.
Vishtik simplifies everything:
Auto-checks your designs against AHJ codes
Offers integrated PE stamping across all 50 states
Manages documentation for interconnection and PTO
Gives you a dashboard to track progress from start to finish
Whether you’re handling 5 jobs or 500, Vishtik helps eliminate back-and-forth and reduces permit rejections—all while saving you serious time.
Want faster solar permits? Explore Vishtik here
Aurora Solar
Best for: Remote solar design with shade and production analysis
Aurora has become a go-to for pre-permit solar design. You can model rooftops in 3D, run production estimates, and make NEC-compliant plans without ever visiting the site. It’s accurate, powerful, and trusted by many national installers.
However, Aurora focuses on the design phase, so you’ll still need something like Vishtik to handle permits and engineering reviews.
Helioscope
Best for: Commercial solar modeling and performance projections
Helioscope shines in the commercial solar space. It’s great for modeling system output, optimizing layouts, and simulating performance—all key steps before submitting designs for permit.
SolarDesignTool
Best for: Quick residential permit sets on a budget
If you’re running a lean operation and need compliant permit drawings without all the bells and whistles, SolarDesignTool is a solid choice. It won’t do full permit submission or engineering review, but it gets the job done fast for basic layouts.
EagleView
Best for: Aerial roof measurements
No ladder needed. EagleView provides high-accuracy roof data using aerial imagery—pitch, azimuth, obstructions, and more. It’s a huge time-saver for design teams and helps reduce site visits.
PermitZilla (by SolarNexus)
Best for: Tracking your permit progress with AHJs
PermitZilla is a project management tool that helps you track where each permit stands. It's useful for keeping internal teams accountable and making sure nothing falls through the cracks during the submission process.
Skelion for SketchUp
Best for: SketchUp users designing solar arrays
Already using SketchUp? Skelion adds solar functionality so you can create array layouts directly in your existing design software. Great for custom homes and carport projects.
PVComplete
Best for: Utility-scale solar projects
This one’s for the big players. PVComplete offers powerful CAD tools, energy simulations, and BOM (bill of materials) features for large-scale solar designs. Think utility projects and solar farms.
DroneDeploy
Best for: Site mapping using drones
DroneDeploy makes it easy to capture site data with drones. It’s perfect for capturing high-res imagery and terrain info—especially helpful for remote or large sites. Bonus: many design platforms now let you import DroneDeploy data directly.
Permit Runners (through Vishtik Partners)
Best for: Letting someone else deal with the red tape
Sometimes, the best software is... a human. Vishtik offers access to regional permit runners who can physically submit and follow up on permits with local authorities. This is gold when dealing with slower jurisdictions or when you’re swamped.
Why the Right Tools Matter More Than Ever
Let’s face it—the permitting process hasn’t gotten easier. In fact, with increasing solar demand and local rule changes, it’s gotten even more complicated. That’s why solar contractors are turning to smarter tools that reduce manual work, improve accuracy, and help get approvals faster.
Using a tool like Vishtik, which handles both the design and submission side, means:
Fewer rejections
Faster PE stamping
No more scrambling for missing documents
Quicker project turnarounds (and happier customers)
Conclusion: Stop Chasing Permits. Start Closing Projects.
In 2025, the solar pros aren’t just building panels—they’re building smart processes.
If your permitting process still relies on email threads, spreadsheets, and last-minute engineering rushes, it’s time to level up. The right tools don’t just save time—they help you scale faster and serve more clients.
