Materials scientist and physicist Guosong Hong is an expert in getting materials to do remarkable things. Recently, he and collaborators used a common food dye found in snack chips to turn living tissue transparent, allowing light to penetrate through skin and muscle. Hong is now working to realize a new age of medical imaging that lets doctors see deep into the body – without surgery. It’s a miracle of physics but it could change medicine, Hong tells host Russ Altman on the latest episode of Stanford Engineering’s The Future of Everything podcast.

Scientists have found an alternative way to produce atoms of the superheavy element livermorium. The new method opens up the possibility of creating another element that could be the heaviest in the world so far: number 120. The search for new elements comes from the dream of finding a variant that is sufficiently stable to be long-lived and not prone to immediate decay. There is a theory in nuclear physics about an island of stability of superheavy elements. This is a potential zone in the upper part of the periodic table of as-yet-undiscovered elements that could remain stable for longer than just a few seconds. The aim is to explore the limits of stability of atomic nuclei.

new job
i started my internship last week! my colleagues are all really nice and i feel like i'm starting to get the hang of things. although there's not that much i can do yet because i still need to complete some introductions. so my main task at the moment is developing a gui for analysing the raw data of our spectrometers. which is cool and challenging and not something i've done before, but it's desk work. and i struggle slightly when i spend a full day at the desk. but i think i'll get to do more lab work soon :)

my students who are struggling in my math class are also the ones struggling with not just media literacy but literacy in general
considering the material you were given, what questions are being asked about the material, and how you might approach the material to justify reaching a particular conclusion are all steps in solving math problems AND in being critical of media
maybe, as adults, we could finally stop pitting school subjects against each other, and instead recognize that the devaluation of any one subject ultimately serves as justification for underfunding or eliminating public education as a whole?
Having media literacy is more important than being good at math prove me wrong
#teaching#school#hating math or science or language arts is CHILDISH#in school we're asking our different subject colleagues for advice on how to integrate their material into our lessons so that#we see physics and chemistry and close reading and evidence based writing and art in our geometry class!!!#...when we have the time. which we often don't bc even admin INSISTS on siloing our subjects so we often have very little idea of what#is going on in other classrooms#10th grade LA is doing 'the american dream' and talking about Ellis Island and Childish Gambino's 'This is America' and Walt Whitman#this could be backed up by talking about immigration statistics!! and having a numeric understanding of just how many people#immigrated via Ellis Island and in other ways other time and even changing local demographics; an understanding of economics#would also be beneficial for those students bc their unit project is to craft a work expressing their 'american dream'#and we're in a school fighting just to hit an 80% graduation rate!!#but the only reason I know what is happening in that class is from 'gossiping' with that teacher in the copy room#these are kids who consider gambling on dice to be a legitimate source of income. like a long term career plan. gambling.#the media literacy IS equally important bc these kids are falling for every lie their favorite influencers tell them!#'this guy is rich he got three lambos I just gotta do what he do and I'm set' but has he ever posted a pic of all three together? '...no'#BC THEY'RE RENTED. I keep pointing out the lies to these kids but they still think an arm length spread of 20s is big money#when that spread is less than a weeks worth of groceries or a monthly power bill#idt

An ‘impossible’ 20-electron molecule challenges 100 years of chemistry
For over a century, the well-known 18-electron rule has guided the field of organometallic chemistry. Now, researchers at Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) have successfully synthesized a novel organometallic compound that challenges this longstanding principle. They have created a stable 20-electron derivative of ferrocene, an iron-based metal-organic complex, which could lead…

Scientists create an artificial cell capable of navigating its environment using chemistry alone - New Study/Science Updates
Researchers at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) have created the world’s simplest artificial cell capable of chemical navigation, migrating toward specific substances like living cells do. Summary Researchers at IBEC have engineered the simplest artificial cell yet, capable of chemotaxis, a process where cells move towards specific chemicals. This artificial cell mimics the…

A research team successfully synthesized tungsten carbide (WC) and tungsten boride (WB2) ceramics with excellent mechanical properties and ablation resistance. These findings were published in the journal of Ceramics International and Journal of the European Ceramic Society. The team was led by Prof. Huang Zhulin at the Institute of Solid State Physics, the Hefei Institutes of Physical Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Ultrahigh temperature ceramics (UHTCs) are essential materials for thermal protection systems with high melting points and excellent stability. Tungsten-based UHTCs offer excellent resistance to heat and radiation. However, they have faced several challenges in practical applications, such as difficulty in achieving high density during processing, grain coarsening during sintering, and limited oxidation and ablation resistance.

Chromium-62 study helps researchers better understand shapes around islands of inversion
In a recent paper in Nature Physics, an international research collaboration used world-class instrumentation at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) to study the exotic nuclide, or rare isotope, chromium-62. The researchers used a gamma-ray spectroscopy experiment in tandem with theoretical models to identify an unexpected variety of shapes in chromium-62. The finding provides more insight into so-called "islands of inversion," or regions in the nuclear chart where certain nuclides diverge from traditional viewpoints based on the properties of stable nuclei. The work involved the joint effort of 23 researchers with 12 different affiliations among them. Led by Alexandra Gade, professor of physics at FRIB and in MSU's Department of Physics and Astronomy and FRIB scientific director, the collaboration also included Robert Janssens, Edward G. Bilpuch Distinguished Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; and Brenden Longfellow, former FRIB graduate researcher and current staff scientist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, as significant contributors.

What is the One Ring Made of?
In The Fellowship of the Ring Gandalf drops the ring in the fire to reveal its hidden writing. Before depositing it in Frodo's hand he assures him that the ring is quite cool. This means that the one ring either has a very high or very low heat capacity. Either it's very low and when the ring is dropped in Frodo's hand, much like tinfoil, it has so little heat energy that it dissipates harmlessly. Or it's very high and even though it absorbed a tremendous amount of thermal energy from the fire it was not enough to raise its temperature significantly.
We also know that the one ring is incredibly dense, as is shown when Bilbo drops it on the floor of Bag End and it thuds to the ground instead of bouncing around like a normal gold ring.
So those are the criteria, the one ring is made from an element, or alloy, that has an incredibly high or incredibly low heat capacity and is at least twice as dense as gold.

Aluminium-20 shatters nuclear norms with explosive triple-proton breakup
Radioactive decay is a fundamental process in nature by which an unstable atomic nucleus loses energy by radiation. Studying nuclear decay modes is crucial for understanding properties of atomic nuclei. In particular, exotic decay modes like proton emission provide essential spectroscopic tools for probing the structure of nuclei far from the valley of stability — the region containing stable…
