California's Government Actions: • SB 35 and SB 9: Make it easier to construct multi-family units and circumvent local red tape. • Project Homekey: Re-purposes hotels/motels into housing for homeless individuals. • California Housing Accelerator: Utilizing federal funds to expedite affordable projects halted due to funding shortfalls.

Interest Group Efforts: • California Housing Partnership (CHPC): They provide research, financial tools, and advocate for stronger policy. • Housing California: They advocate for policy reform and provide housing-first solutions to assisting homelessness.

Both advocate for tenant protections, funding, and Inclusionary Zoning laws.

I just now noticed you have a pinup of an Intel Xeon chip on your wall. Two questions: 1) how are you such a nerd, and 2) why the Xeon in particular?

oh that is one of my pieces of memorabilia from when we did the ISC2019 Student Cluster Competition. Which I suppose answers 1), I actively seek out Nerd Experience Points.

As for 2), While we were setting up our compute cluster, we also set up all our booth decorations which included some mylar balloons spelling out "CHPC", a cheap RGB light string we had way back in selection rounds, and a South African Flag.

The actually real official corporate booths had these little fancy poster board signs from Intel showing off that they were using various grades of Xeon processors. As it so happened, our cluster had a dozen 8180 Xeon Platinum processors in it, and so of course we knew we had to have one.

So, we went off, found the Intel table, and asked them if we could pretty please have one for our cluster. They ended up giving us two, and I brought this one home once we were done.

Those 8180's were ten thousand dollars a piece, 28-core monsters, and we almost didn't get them: we actually had to get our supervisors to ask Intel to lend them to us, since our usual sponsors cut our budget and only gave us 18-core Gold tier processors. Bah, only Gold? A meager 3500 dollars each? Ridiculous. We were also totally right in asking for them, in the end we only won by two percentage points, there's no way we would have won on those Golds.

Other memorabilia I have from that competition includes the Geeko plush that the OpenSUSE reps gave us. He hangs from my desk light and serves as a pincushion these days.

Modeling the 5 Pillars of CHPC

Modeling is tough. No, not the kind you do in front of cameras—the kind you do in front of family, friends and strangers.  The kind that pushes you past your perceived limitations, to be who you came here to be because your family, friends and yes, even strangers, have expectations of you.

That was on my mind when I first learned about Certified High Performance Coaching (CHPC). Expectations. Admittedly, more so for myself than for the people I wanted to help, at least in the beginning.  

As a nonprofit resource development trainer, coach and consultant, client prospects sought my services in helping them secure financing for their passion to bring relief in one form or another to their communities.  As are most passionate visionaries, they were bolting forward with little thought as to how prepared they were for the realities of holding up the world.  

It was my job to bring them gently to this realization by asking the tough questions, to have them find and define their own anchors of service, endurance and legacy not only for their organizations, but for themselves.  

What I discovered time and again, was that they were often uncertain as to whether those anchors even existed. They weren’t clear about what to do to keep moving forward in their lives. They didn’t have the vibrancy and stamina to achieve their goals. They were afraid to express themselves fully. They weren’t as efficient as they needed to be to get things done. They felt their ability to teach, challenge and role model was lacking.  

At the time I was untethered myself, still dealing with the residue of lost jobs, relationships and the vibrant presence of my mom, who was slowly succumbing to the ravages of Alzheimer’s disease.  I too needed an anchor, some way to redefine who I needed to be to validate my relevancy.

In truth, what I saw in them I saw in myself. And I knew that couldn’t stand. Not because I thought myself better than them. But because I thought them deserving better than that.

Like I said before, modeling is tough but this revelation spurred me to push past my limitations and exceed my expectations. So I decided to make the major investment in money and faith and become certified in High Performance Coaching.

During certification training week in 2015, I immediately saw how incorporating the 5 Pillars of High Performance into my life could elevate not only my expectations, but my outcomes. And then I saw how I could use them to help other people, if I showed them how they worked for me.

The five pillars of CHPC –clarity, energy, courage, productivity, influence—fit so well with who I am and who I strive to become.  They’re about as essential a set of fundamental elements to success as I’ve ever explored.  

And now that I’m seeking re-certification this year, all while still being challenged in some of the same areas I struggled in back then, I’m intent on leveling up even more in the five pillars to meet my obligation.

And this is how I’m doing it:

Clarity: By getting clear on the fact that remaining a Certified High Performance Coach is job one for me now because I depend on the structure it gives me to achieve and maintain the outcomes I seek for my life and for anyone that seeks my services.

Energy: By continuing to make the time every day to take care of my body, mind and spirit through exercise, hydration, healthy eating, sleep and reflection. This gives me the energy I need to put in the work required to meet my re-certification goals.

Courage: By daring to believe that I can develop a thriving CHPC practice if I show up boldly every day, ready to work hard, learn and be open to embracing hardship as well as success.

Productivity: By keeping my eyes on the prize, scheduling distractions, organizing my tasks and using tools that effectively boost my efficiency.

Influence: By realizing that like the proverbial pebble in the ocean, everything I do or fail to do is impacting someone I have interacted with or may interact with, either now or in the future. As a result I need to ensure my actions inspire capability and relevancy.  

Now while I’m feeling pretty good about the track I’m on, discipline and mindset is just part of what I need to reach my goal.  I still need help leveling up in one other area: financing my re-certification.  

You see, within weeks after getting certified I offered free coaching strategy sessions to a few nonprofit professionals.  They told me they gained impressive insights that helped them in adapting high performance habits and learning to trust their inner voice. I was so looking forward to having even more sessions in the fall.

But my mom, who I'd been caring for, fell ill and passed away that October so I put everything on hold, realizing I couldn't be much help to my client prospects until I'd done for myself what I'd wanted to help them do.  Now after many months spent trying to find my emotional and financial footing, it’s time for re-certification. Admittedly, I’m far from able to pay my fees and attend the mandatory training week in California in June, and fear I’ll lose everything I’ve worked so hard for.  That’s not an option.

Dianne’s CHPC Re-Certified! Project 2017 is a crowdfunding campaign I’m launching on April 17 to raise the $3,300 needed to cover my re-certification fees.  In truth, I hope to surpass my goal so I can offer scholarships and discounts to anyone interested in getting coached in high performance as well.
