Creative Audio Proposal
My proposal is both specific and quite vague because I have a lot that I would like to learn in quite a short space of time. I don’t think that I’m very good at working with sound, but it is something that I find quite important to me, I want to work at getting better at it. That means really learning and putting in the effort with it. So I sent this in:
I want to try to create background music that could effect and change the atmosphere of an environment.
I’d like to learn to be able to work with different types of artists to create/compose/compile tracks for a smooth transitioning stage performance.
I am excited to try out and learn to work with as much hardware and software as I can get my hands on. Specific interest in soundboards, (launchpads?), mixers, and stage performance tech.
I would like to work on broadening what I listen to, and seeing how that my effect my individual style.

花鳥風月 - Past -  | 花鳥風月 - Present -
花鳥風月 (Kachofugetsu) Lit. Meaning “The Beauty of Nature”
I tried to stay in line with my theme and felt they both embodied somewhat opposing forces of nature with how they played out. Therefore I chose to give them a “past” and “present” notation a long with matching images to show that they’re a pair. Both use similar sets of instruments but play out very differently and I think that contrast is what I was aiming to do from the beginning, by taking the Shamisen out of its intended genre and context.
One song stays closer to its origins but uses a more modern genre. The other uses it outside its genre but still remains somewhat recognisable to its origin.

I created a music video for “I’m Listening” by using the audio spectrum. I don't think the audio spectrum suits this kind of song however. the tempo is too slow.

Giving Melodic’s a go and it was very much needed to practice my rhythm and beats, as for production practice these are important factors to make a piece flow. This has been something I’ve struggled to do physically and an example would be that time me and Harry attended that class and I was playing the gong. It was difficult for me to hit the drum beats on the right time but as time went by it got a bit easier (very very small progress but I’m still work on it haha). I found this app really useful in that area where I really needed some help with. In my piece I do have highhats and drum beats which I think need to be sorted out concisely and a way I think I can do this is by using the metronome. I didn’t use it while creating my piece because I just did what felt right to me. But in this exercise on Melodic’s I found that the metronome was really helpful in terms of staying on the beat count.
There are also some really cool beats in this app and I really enjoy using it.

creative audio & studio 25/04
I have been focussing mainly on audio experimentation recently for Creative Audio and Studio.
The testing I have done for this began with simple recordings on my phone and then playing around with those recordings on Ableton Live and Audacity. I found this was a really good way to start this project with the experimentation in the Digital Audio Workspace. However, I wanted to take a step further by producing my own sounds through synthesizers and playing around with those a little more. I spent a good few hours going through the different sound banks of the Prophet 5 and even the Mini-Moog. I recorded all of these by hooking up an external mp3 recorder. I  then had a look at those sounds in my DAW and played around with the ones I really liked and managed to produce some tracks that are on my Icloud. I have been really interested in sci-fi/horror vibes using these synths as I think it really suits what we are wanting for our final project being effective and immersive.
During my sessions with the synths, I also tried to generate “natural sounds” from the Prophet 5 ie a cat meow, a dog bark. I realized this when playing around with the pitch on one of the sound banks and came across a cat's meow, then my actual cat was meowing back. This gave an idea to continue to generate “natural sounds” from an analog synth and see if people would recognize them (my cat sure did). I managed to produce a cat's meow, a dogs bark, a helicopter, and a woman's scream.

I will be recording a log of my thoughts and developments through this google doc, this document contains snippets of the other folders and bookmarks listed below but does not mention everything - please feel free to explore if more information is required:  https://docs.google.com/document/d/1QuuS3mjB5s_xUpapr7MQ06lBdFVVydUBwHYLs72tq64/edit?usp=sharing
YouTube playlist to collate all the videos I have watched for research and that have informed my process : https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLmZmpjY65SOSUs-11T419t1KMfx3vr9A_
I have also created another playlist that contains inspirations of the works that have been inspiring me: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLmZmpjY65SORcK9dNiMeuHpcQjhtTKTET
This is a document containing all notable bookmarks of websites that have inspired this project: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1zZLJPNJC3sjmGEsrf5a1N9e53FprDPblS2MjkSBgm2E/edit?usp=sharing
I have also created some folders containing the screen recordings, images and videos that have been recorded throughout this process:
Screen Recordings -  https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1n-ElQPlbdpBAD4znr4lvffLxX3-0fo8S?usp=sharing
Video and images - https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1EzAZwdOs6EDqRRFqJ0fnKdnamKj3mUG6?usp=sharing
Although there are many things that I would have liked to create in this project, I had to restrain myself in order to meet the time constraints. Above is an image of the controller that I created from an old RC radio from the 70s, it has full USB midi functionality programmed through an Arduino micro and a 16 channel analog multiplexer with help from this brilliant library https://github.com/tttapa/MIDI_controller. This controller was designed to be used with a custom Ableton live project. The Ableton live project utilizes the VIZZABLE plugins created by  [email protected] that are incredible for live visualization in Ableton. I look forward to building on and improving on the concepts explored through this paper over the coming years.

Creative Audio Research 4
By a fellow classmate I was given an awesome list of artists, songs, and albums to take a look at. I have finally caved and gotten the free version of Spotify. It’s kind of to help me with this list.
This is the list I typed out. (I think I got a few things not exactly right, but it’s what I’ve got to go on.)
Artist Recommendations:
The Regrettes
Mini Mansions
Mitski
Snail mail
Song Recommendations:
I wanna get better - bleachers
Little death - the beths
Runs in the family - amanda palmer
When he died - lemon demon
Pain killers - beach bunny
Thumbnail - louie zong
Hello Anxiety
All men are pigs
Heat wave
Album Recommendations:
Transgender Street Legend
How to be a human being - glass animals
I have not gotten very far down the list at all, but I have already become quite attached to “All Men Are Pigs”, and the album “How to Be Human”. All Men Are Pigs is just really catchy, it’s taking me quite a few re listens to actually think about the lyrics. The album I found was How to Be Human by The Classic Crime, I don’t think that it’s the one I was meant to find, but I do really enjoy it. The songs I’m most attached to right now from the album and just artists because of Spotify’s shuffling are, “The Third Way” and “Gravedigging”. I think The Third Way is about letting go, and I relate so much right now. It has a nice tempo and beat. I have adoration for Gravedigging because of the driving beat, and it’s close (to me) punk, rock, metal, and screamo parallels. It brings me back to those types of genres. It’s also another relatable song for me at the moment.
Overall I’m also really enjoying how Spotify just floats you through lots of different slightly related songs. It can be frustrating when you just want to listen to something really specific. But otherwise it’s a fast way to find new songs you might like, and a plethora of different connected artists, albums, and genres.

I made a new friend (Ahem, Nicky McCleery) and they sent me the greeting of “Moshi moshi”. I couldn’t remember exactly what the translation is, so I just chucked it into google, and it spat back a song as the top hit. A song I probably wouldn’t have come across otherwise.
Poppy - Moshi Moshi (Official Video) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0dNpGO1pCk It was quite a strange but nice song. I found that the message I got from it was well timed in my life. It has a continuous catchy beat throughout, the words are simple and repetitive, and there is a cool guitar solo.
I decided to click on the recommended video afterwards.
Poppy - Computer Boy (Official Video) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Ao5mg11xIk
Another strange one, with a slightly toxic barely obscured message. Still a catchy tune with a strong beat throughout, simple and repetitive words, and some clever vocal mixing.

Sound Work
I am proud of getting some of my weekly experimenting done.
Tumblr media
My very basic drum set. I’m not sure if it’s really much to talk about, but I’m quite happy with it.
Tumblr media
A kind of ambient styled “piece”. I use the term “piece” here very lightly, I know that I didn’t take as much time with this one. I could do a lot more tweaking, experimenting and polishing. Though in saying that, I do like what came out.
I’ll be onto the this weeks lot, multi tracks.

Creative Audio Research 2
While I’ve been working on Studio today I’ve been listening to music that I wouldn’t very often. I’ve listened to two playlists I found on YouTube, I searched up “pump it up prime 2 music” trying to find the music from the dance machine game.
The first one I listened to was this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTWOLOeX90c&list=PLKpQoj1tnQglK57fK79vxtg2Ke4NeqSkS&index=1 - I think it may have been a person’s personal picks from the game.
Then: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IcErP0amCpk&list=PLooxq-qGGCyb0uFHPCBzG77ILB1m-X8BI&index=1 - I believe this one may be most of, to all of the songs.
The music is all dance geared, mostly without words, a lot of it in another language. I still really enjoy the majority of it all. The beats are normally strong, and the flow is good. I find a most of it runs really well in the background for me while I’m working. I’ve not ever really been a big fan of rap, so still not very much of one here either; though I did find Skizzo’s Up & Up okay. Some of the songs are quite catchy, I find myself bopping along to it, or typing as close to in time as I can. I’m thinking about if I could try out learning the arrow sets to a particular song, then listen to the music by itself a lot, and see if I get better at the arrow sets after just having listened to the song away from the dance pad.

Creative Audio MIDI Controller
I’ve been looking at getting a Launchpad for at least 3 years just because I really liked them. But I hadn't properly looked into it until now. The one I’ve wanted and have been looking at getting for so long is of course the most expensive one of it’s type...
Tumblr media
https://novationmusic.com/launch/launchpad-pro
Doing further research. I don’t just want to try and buy anything without more information. (Especially when this expensive.) Maybe my style has even changed from when I wanted it so badly?
Comparison of the Launchpad Mini, Launchpad MkII, and Launchpad Pro - https://support.novationmusic.com/hc/en-gb/articles/360000777685-Differences-between-Launchpad-Mini-Launchpad-and-Launchpad-Pro
Haha, more interesting but expensive kit... - https://store.djtechtools.com/products/midi-fighter-64
Maybe I’m just a victim of marketing, or it’s because I couldn’t stop listening to the launchpad covers of my favourite songs at the time, but I think they are really good. They could fit my style.
After extensive research looking over all the specs, models, and prices online, the Launchpad is not a feasible starting MIDI device for me. (Maybe later in my career if I feel like I will benefit from getting it.) So for now, Clint has gotten a good deal in store with the Rockshop for the:

I’m looking at getting the AKAI MPK MINI MK2 25-Key Controller Keyboard W MPC® Pads & Knobs because I think it is the best allrounder, especially for being new to this, and I’ll get the most use out of the different systems for a long time.

I’ve started at everynoice.com to get some new genres in my head. Along the way I’ve also found a lot of things similar to the music from my childhood, like things my parents would play. I’ve just copied the links from ones I’ve enjoyed so far, then alphabetised them. It’s an ongoing process. I’m nowhere near having been through all the genres on the website, my list is already long. I’ve found some interesting ones I wouldn’t have thought I’d enjoy, and some new names that I don’t think I would have come across easily.

Open Studio for the Studio project / Finished
During this few weeks, we finished our project with an introducing video, two description poster including our codes and all the app screen shoots.
It’s a successful conceptual project, we did almost everything to make this app become a real app. However, we don’t have enough technology, knowledge, teammate and the most important thing:time to make it real.We really want to create this app and showing our idea to the society.
When I started to do this project, I realized that I lose myself sometime, and I don’t know how to make this project better. Until I started to solve more problems, and do more in the team, I know I finally find my way in this project. The project is not perfect, but we are not aim to perfect, we want to show the idea to every one, and now we did in the open studio. I had some problems in life during the project but I still tried to do more. I need to be more focus on the studio project in next time. Also, do something new. We knew how to make a better animation video, learned how to coding a AR app(basic codes) and gained more in this project.
Here is the processes:

Also, Thanks for all my teammates, you guys did a great job.
The most important thing is, We created something new.
