MEAT PUPPETS
In theaters this weekend:

Stopmotion--The peculiar low-tech magic of stop-motion animation has always been one of the special delights of cinema for me; it's one of the reasons I became a movie lover as a child. Because of the work of masters like Willis O'Brien, Jim Danforth, Karel Zeman and the great Ray Harryhasuen, the labor-intensive, expensive technique is often associated with whimsical fantasy or science fiction. But it can be used for nightmarish horror as well, and this nasty, self-referential British chiller, directed by Robert Morgan from a script he wrote with Robin King, takes us to that dark side.
Ella (Aisling Franciosi) is the daughter of famous stop-motion animator Suzanne (Stella Gonet), and an animator herself. Because she no longer has the use of her hands, Suzanne directs Ella in painstakingly manipulating her puppets; she refers to Ella herself by the affectionate--or maybe not so affectionate--nickname of "puppet," and she's quietly, passive-aggressively tyrannical toward her, constantly unsatisfied with her work, constantly demanding retakes. Ella would like to contribute her own ideas to her mother's work, yet when asked what these ideas are she's stymied, daunted by Suzanne's greatness.
But when Suzanne falls into a coma, Ella meets a nervy little girl (Caoilinn Springall) in her building who talks her into abandoning Suzanne's project--a traditional tale involving a cyclops--and starting a new stop-motion film based on a storyline she suggests. It involves a terrified girl fleeing through the forest and taking refuge in a cabin, stalked by a hideous figure called the Ashman. She also insists Ella start using actual dead animal parts, and worse, over her armatures. Before long Ella is haunted by visions, some of them pretty hair-raising, of the gruesome characters in her film.
The live action side of Stopmotion has a strong streak of Cronenberg-esque "body horror," while the stop-motion sequences show the influence of Jan Švankmajer and the Quay Brothers. It's a potent one-two punch of creepiness. This is one of those movies where the line between dreams and reality isn't always certain, but Morgan keeps enough of a coherent narrative that this doesn't become tiresome, and there are freaky erotic touches, as when Ella is having sex, and fingers her lover's back as she would a stop-motion puppet.
Like many films of this sort, when Stopmotion shifts to overtly murderous, gory grapples in its last half-hour or so, it loses some of its macabre potency. But Franciosi, who played the stowaway in The Last Voyage of the Demeter, is a compelling presence, and on the whole, this is one of the more memorable horror pictures in a while. The only real complaint is the same one that applies to most films that showcase stop-motion: there isn't enough stop-motion.

Doctor Who - Boom
Moffat's return to Doctor Who is a literal minefield with plenty of "Kiss Kiss" but will there be a "Bang Bang" in Boom?
Moffat’s return to Doctor Who is a literal minefield with plenty of “Kiss Kiss” but will there be a “Bang Bang” in Boom? With Davies’ return, DOCTOR WHO once again embraced more character-driven, emotional storytelling as a welcome antidote to the thematically rich but dramatically inept era which preceded it. With BOOM, though, Steven Moffat returns to do what he often did best – present the…

STOPMOTION (2023)
💁♀️Strong Female Lead
A strange artistic film about the hunger to create and the lengths some will go to make their artistic visions a reality (what that can do to a person).
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Trigger Warning Flashing Lights, Self Harm
We meet Ella who works as the hands for her arthritic mother who is a Stopmotion genius but can’t do the hand part because of the aforementioned arthritis. Ella desperately wants to work on her own projects but her mother is rather controlling, that is until she suffers a stroke. Now Ella moves into an apartment where she can be free to work on her moms cyclops story even though a little girl tells her it is boring and that she should do a story about a little girl lost in the woods. In a fugue state Ella destroys the cyclops’ and their story and makes the little girl lost in the woods story, photographing it and everything. She has no memory of doing this. The little girl is thrilled when she finds out Ella is making her story, but says that the little girl doll is all wrong. She needs to be made out of raw meat. Okay… And the antagonist. The Ash Man. I’m sure he won’t need to be made out of anything terrible, oh, just a fox corpse. She resists at first but pretty quickly gives in.
At this point I know you are wondering why Ella is doing this and the main reason is because artists are weird people, we do weird things for the sake of our art and will justify it 'til the cows come home. Look at me, I’m watching and reviewing horror movies just about every single day, I’m sure that isn’t the greatest thing ever for my brain, but here I am! And I do it because I love it! Another reason why Ella is following along with this crazy meat scheme is because the little girl won’t tell Ella the rest of the story otherwise, and Ella isn’t really the owner of this story (you think the little kid is gonna get a shout out in the credits of Ella’s movie?). So at this point the Stopmotion dolls are literally bloody which is so haunted and creepy, they look alive and badly hurt. The movie is going along swimmingly with the little girl's help but it just so happens that Ella is being stalked by a real life Ash Man.
After Ella continues to have issues and injuries due to her Stopmotion film project, her boyfriend pretty much tells her she needs to quit it plus her mom dies. She doesn’t take either well and escapes the hospital to finish her movie. Before that can happen she tries to kill the little girl and we learn that the little girl is not real at all. We kind of had a feeling that the girl wasn’t real, especially after the party scene but now we know it for a fact. The little girl is also saying that now we need more blood for the puppets, they aren’t fleshy enough so Ella gets to work on the stitches in her leg. I’m having Saw X flashbacks, leave the thighs alone people! Genuinely, I thought I was gonna ralph.
Ella is self harming to get more meat for her puppets and her boyfriend and his sister walk in and want her to stop. Ella kills them brutally and then she butchers them. She just wants to finish her movie. She has become a monster like her mother but even worse because she will kill those she used to care about to get to her end goal. She must not only continue her work but she must make bigger meat puppets (ew!). Then the big Ash Man meat puppet comes alive and comes after Ella, eating her face that mushes all away into corpse wax (like she uses on her Stopmotion fellas) and it is super gross and satisfying at the same time. Ella actually dies from bleeding out but her film is complete and the little girl inside of her says she loves it so Ella can die happy.
