Enrique Tarrio, the former Proud Boys leader granted clemency by President Donald Trump last month, was arrested outside the U.S. Capitol on Friday and charged with assaulting a female protester.

Tarrio was handcuffed, searched and put in a police van by U.S. Capitol Police after he appeared on Capitol Hill with several other members of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers for a "press conference." The police said he was charged with assault.

Capitol Police said in a statement that the incident happened around 2:30 p.m. ET when "our officers witnessed a woman (a counter protester) put a cell phone close to a man’s face" while they were both walking. "Then the officers witnessed the man strike the woman’s phone and arm," the statement said.

Man Accused of Assaulting Rep. Nancy Mace Released with Restrictions

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Capitol Police arrested James McIntyre, 33, of Illinois, on Tuesday for allegedly assaulting Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., inside the Rayburn House Office Building. McIntyre has been charged with assaulting a government official and pleaded not guilty during a virtual hearing on Wednesday.

As part of his release conditions, McIntyre has been ordered to stay at least 100 yards away from Mace, avoid any communication with her, and refrain from entering Washington, D.C. His next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 27.

The incident occurred shortly before 6 p.m. in a building open to the public. According to court documents, McIntyre approached Mace to shake her hand but allegedly grabbed it with both hands and shook her arm aggressively for 3 to 5 seconds, causing her arm to flail. Witnesses reported that McIntyre said, “Trans youth deserve advocacy” during the encounter.

Mace later told police she experienced pain in her wrist, arm, and shoulder but declined medical assistance.

In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Mace attributed the incident to her stance on transgender rights, writing, “I was physically accosted at the Capitol tonight by a pro-trans man. One new brace for my wrist and some ice for my arm and it’ll heal just fine.”

The incident follows Mace’s introduction of a controversial measure in November to ban transgender women from using restrooms aligned with their gender identity on Capitol Hill. The proposal has drawn criticism and protests from LGBTQ+ advocacy groups.

Mace’s measure, if passed, would fall under the jurisdiction of the House sergeant-at-arms, responsible for enforcing the rules of the chamber.

Donald Trump campaigned on the promise of mass deportations, and on Monday, he said that his administration would use the U.S. military to carry out this expulsion of millions of people, many of whom have lived in America for years or even decades.

The U.S. military historically has not conducted immigration enforcement and does not normally conduct law enforcement functions.

But when Tom Fitton, president of the conservative group Judicial Watch, posted on social media that the next administration “will use military assets to reverse the Biden invasion through a mass deportation program,” Trump responded: “TRUE!!!”

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has already pursued the legal strategy of declaring the flow of immigrants an “invasion,” arguing that the federal government has failed in its constitutional duty to protect states from foreign powers and that Texas should have the right to use its National Guard as a deportation force. Republican lawmakers in Arizona have argued the same. Trump has also previously suggested he would rely on wartime powers to carry out his plan.

Trump betrayed his oath to defend the nation by doing nothing to stop the Jan 6 violence. Instead, according to witness testimony, he sat and watched TV for hours.

#43. The majority of senators — 57 out of 100 — voted to convict Trump, including 7 Republican senators.

#44. In a likely obstruction of justice, Trump pressured then FBI Director James Comey to stop the FBI’s investigation into Trump’s National Security Adviser, Michael Flynn. This was documented in the Mueller report.

#46. Trump tried to shut down the Mueller investigation by ordering White House Counsel Don McGann to fire Mueller. McGann refused because that would be criminal obstruction of justice.

#47. When news got out that Trump tried to fire Mueller, Trump repeatedly told McGann to lie — to Mueller, to press, to public — and even create a false document to conceal Trump’s attempt to fire Mueller.

#48. Trump ordered his staff not to turn over emails showing Don Jr. had set up a meeting at Trump Tower before the 2016 election with representatives of the Russian government.

#49. Trump convinced Michael Cohen to lie to Congress about Trump’s plans to build a Trump Tower in Moscow, and Cohen served prison time for lying to Congress.

Trump was not charged for criminal obstruction of justice because it’s the Justice Department’s policy not to indict a sitting president, but more than a thousand former federal prosecutors who served under both Republicans and Democrats, signed a letter declaring there was more than enough evidence to prosecute Trump.

Honestly, there’s so much more, from exchanging “love letters” with North Korea’s brutal dictator to publicly denigrating a Gold Star military widow and making her cry, to the way he attacked journalists, to late night tweet binges.

Look, I can understand why a lot of people want to block all of this out of their memories. But we cannot afford to forget just how terrible Trump’s time in the White House was for this nation.

And we sure as hell can’t afford to put him back there.

In the wake of a near-tragic assassination attempt of a widely reviled figure, some people who loathe him may be wrestling with or suppressing emotions that feel contradictory. But the notions that Trump is dangerous, and that attempting to murder him is also dangerous, are not in tension with each other. The ethics and the practicality of liberal democracy both affirm a strong norm against political violence. [...]    Even though American history has seen a long litany of murders and attempted murders — Gerald Ford survived two attempts on his life within a few weeks of each other — this one feels scarier. That is because our social peace has grown more precarious. An assassination attempt on Donald Trump is a far more dangerous thing than an attempt to kill Mitt Romney would have been a dozen years ago, or Al Gore a dozen years before that.    And while the responsibility for maintaining social peace and the norm of non-violence is shared equally across the political spectrum, the blame for its decay is not.    Trump stokes and feeds upon a lust for violence. He possesses a demagogue’s skill for manipulating his supporters’ most elemental emotions. As a private citizen he exploited a white woman’s rape in Central Park to demand the execution of innocent young men of color. He continues to call for various critics to be executed for their disloyalty. When a maniac attempted to kill Nancy Pelosi and smashed the skull of her husband, he cheered it on. He continues to glorify and promise to free the criminals who assaulted police in the attack on the Capitol in an attempt to seize an unelected second term.    It is not Trump’s fault that someone tried to kill him. It is absolutely his fault that it has immediately set off a widespread fear of reprisals and chaos.

Trump Shooting: He Must Be Defeated by Ballots, Not Bullets

Look, I can’t wait for the guy to die and be gone forever. I just want him to die in prison.

And he’s still a Fascist. Don’t let that get obscured in all of this. He’s still the same wannabe dictator, the same hateful liar, the same corrupt traitor, the same 34 time convicted felon, the same rapist.

Nothing about him has changed. Nothing about Project 2025 has changed.

Obviously, the national conversation is going to be focused on this for the near future, and we can’t forget or minimize that he remains a serious and dire threat to America, and the world.
