You know the type. You’re innocently scrolling through your inbox, dodging newsletters you swear you never signed up for, when a brand you've had a boozy fling with suddenly appears like an old flame:

“Do you want a free gift?”

Excuse me, Kraken Rum—yes. Yes, I do.

I mean, come on, who doesn’t want something for nothing? Especially from Kraken, the dark, mysterious, tentacle-loving purveyor of sweet and spicy black rum. A company so dramatic in aesthetic it makes your average Halloween party look like a dull Wednesday.

Let’s Set the Scene:

You sip a glass of Kraken Black Spiced Rum, with its signature blend of caramel, vanilla, clove, and cinnamon. Maybe you've dabbled in their Kraken Roast Coffee Rum, Kraken Black Cherry & Madagascan Vanilla, or the fancy Kraken Gold Spiced Rum if you’re feeling especially regal.

Kraken doesn’t do subtle. They do gothic nautical adventure with a side of “maybe I’ll summon a sea beast for fun.”

So when they say, “Fancy a little something-something?”, you're already halfway to filling out your name, address, email, shoe size, mother's maiden name, and emotional vulnerabilities.

The Brooch of Mystery

This particular freebie? A brooch.

Not just any brooch, mind you. A dark, shiny, Kraken-branded bit of wearable nautical drama that looks like it came from the drawer of an eccentric sea captain with a flair for vintage lapel pins.

I applied for one. Actually, I might have applied for two (it was a weird morning, don't judge). Filled in the form, got the confirmation email, and settled in for the advertised wait of 6–8 weeks.

But of course, this is Kraken. They don't just give gifts—they test your patience, loyalty, and emotional fortitude.

Fast-forward to 12 Weeks Later…

Honestly, I’d almost forgotten about it. One day you're clicking a link in a rum-fuelled haze, and the next, you’re knee-deep in June and suddenly a padded envelope arrives looking like it's been on a quest of its own. I half expected it to be covered in barnacles.

And inside?

The brooch. The legend. The prize.

I held it aloft like a pirate lifting cursed treasure from the deep. Did a little internal fanfare. Maybe whispered “worth it” to myself.

So Was It Worth the Wait?

Let’s break it down.

✅ The “Yes” Camp:

It looks genuinely cool. Black, shiny, gothic, a hint of occult charm. Like something a stylish ghost might wear.

It’s actually decent quality. Not flimsy or plasticky. This thing has weight.

It’s free (technically).

It’s branded, limited-edition, and just obscure enough to make people squint at it and go, “Where did you get that?”

There’s always the delusional hope it might be worth something in 10 years. Think Antiques Roadshow meets Pirate Chic.

❌ The “No” Camp:

12 weeks?! It could’ve gestated a Kraken baby in that time.

It's a brooch. I’m not exactly the “daily brooch wearer” demographic.

I had to surrender personal data for it—email, maybe marketing consent, probably a piece of my soul.

It’s kind of… weirdly niche? Like, who’s wearing a rum-themed brooch to the supermarket? (Spoiler: I am. I definitely am.)

The Final Verdict?

Is it a con?

Nah. More like a marketing gimmick with gothic flavour. But one I willingly signed up for. Kraken isn’t lying. They said 6–8 weeks. They just… added a few weeks for dramatic effect. Like seasoning. Or a plot twist.

Was it worth it?

In a world of subscription spam and email offers that lead nowhere, this actually arrived. Eventually. And it’s cool enough to keep. So, yes.

But also: meh.

A solid 6.5/10 on the “Freebie Excitement” scale.

A whopping 10/10 on the “I love a good story about waiting 3 months for a decorative accessory I’ll wear once and then tell everyone about it” scale.

Final Thoughts (and Future Regrets)

If Kraken offers another mysterious freebie in future, will I go for it again?

Of course I will.

Because deep down, we’re all just suckers for shiny things and promises of pirate glamour.

So raise a glass of your favourite Kraken flavour—Black Spiced, Roast Coffee, Black Cherry & Madagascan Vanilla, or the smooth Gold Spiced—and toast to the long, strange journey of a brooch that took three months and probably five marketing campaigns to reach your front door.

And hey, if you see someone in Tesco wearing a brooch shaped like the Kraken’s tentacle… that’s me. Ask me about the wait.
