Astartes Cuddling Headcanons
A/n: Inspired by multiple posts I've seen and brainstorming with friends.
W: Platonic Relationships, Just super cute, Mega Fluff, Kinda Angsty
Astartes are not as socialized as regular children so they tend to come off as very blunt and very unfeeling.
This is why i feel that many of them seek comfort silently, mainly through physical platonic contact.
From being an aspirant and sleeping in close piles with other aspirants since they're home sick, to being neophytes who are now working towards the dream of becoming a battle brother and doing the same, these overgrown children seek companionship in their battle brothers
Not only do the aspirants, being so young, many of them orphans are denied gentle gestures by their overseers, they make their own comfort by confiding in each other.
Cuddling, hugging, sharing food is typical at this early age as their all trying to cope.
Once they become neophytes these rituals change. Many of them are now a step closer to being battle brothers, many of them being further ahead in their enhancement surgeries.
Many of the Neophytes seek comfort in their companies Chaplain or other veteran battle brothers.
Neophytes will create these cuddle piles where they all share a room or a space and just sleep next to each other or on top of each other, holding onto one another as they rest as they feel like this helps them regulate not only their body temperature but also makes sleeping easier.
Oddly smart since this also means that in case anyone sneaks up on them they can all respond quickly to that threat.
Full fledge battle brothers do the same but a little differently.
They have their own chambers, they have their own spaces, this doesn't mean sleep overs arent a thing.
Having had more in depth training and psychological indoctrination done on them, they no longer understand the aching feeling that sometimes presents themselves when they are put into very domestic situations.
Eating in the mess hall? They like being together in the community but they don't understand why.
Speaking while doing basic maintenance on their equipment? They enjoy the deep conversations they have with their battle brothers but they don't understand why they do.
Boasting about receiving praise from their Primarch or chapter master? They're overjoyed to have performed their duty well but they also don't know why they would like to hear such affirmations more often.
Its small things that should be insignificant to them that confuse them as they are told time and time again that they no longer have a need for such baseline wants or needs.
Deep down, i think they know that no matter how enhanced they become they desire such small gestures of community and comfort and that is why they develop friendships amongst each other.
Some seek company in the apothecary and others with their chaplains or veteran brothers.

Mark Sumner at Daily Kos:
Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry signed a bill requiring every public school classroom to display the Ten Commandments after bragging that he “can’t wait to be sued” for this outrageous assault on the Constitution. But the legislation package does a lot more than force Christianity on children. For example, it also removes requirements for COVID-19 vaccinations and limits other vaccinations. Not only is the overall package a hodgepodge of religious right thirst traps, but the part about the Ten Commandments includes plenty of outright strange.
[...]
6. SCHOOLS ARE PROHIBITED FROM EVEN ASKING ABOUT STUDENTS’ VACCINATION STATUS
While the first five items were all crammed into the single bill about the Ten Commandments, Landry actually signed off on a package of items, including a prohibition on COVID-19 vaccine mandates. But that doesn’t really matter, since another bill in the package entirely eliminates school officials’ authority to check vaccination status. To put a double underline under this prohibition, teachers aren’t allowed to ask about vaccination status, but if they somehow become aware, they’re not allowed to seat students in a way that might prevent the spread of disease in their classrooms. They also can’t prevent unvaccinated kids from participating in any in- or out-of-school activity. Because that would be “discrimination.” And you know how much Southern Republicans hate discrimination.
7. TEACHERS CAN BE SUED FOR USING A STUDENT’S PREFERRED NAME OR PRONOUNS
The legislation requires that students only be assigned pronouns according to what is called their "immutable sex" as found on their birth certificates. They can also only be addressed by the name found on their birth certificates or by nicknames “derived from that name.” Is Betsy okay for Elizabeth? How about Bess? Lizzie? Can you use Jack for John? Is Rory really an acceptable nickname for Lorelei? Teachers better be on top of these things because the bill makes them personally liable, allowing them to be sued if they don’t keep those nicknames and pronouns straight.
8. A “DON’T SAY GAY” BILL WORSE THAN FLORIDA’S WAS ADDED ALMOST WITHOUT NOTICE
The “Let Kids Be Kids” act protects delicate ears from any mention of sexual orientation, gender identity, or sexual orientation all the way through grade 12. No teacher, coach, or other school employee is allowed to engage in any discussion on these topics. They’re also not allowed to reveal their own gender identity or sexual orientation.
While Louisiana’s infamous 10 Commandments in schools law (HB71) has generated lots of rightful criticism for inserting religion into public school classrooms, the bill was passed as part of a package of education items, including enacting an anti-LGBTQ+ Don’t Say Gay or Trans law deceitfully called the “Let Kids Be Kids” Act to apply to all K-12 school classes (HB122), prohibiting the inquiry of a student’s vaccination status or ways to safely contain the spread of diseases (HB908), and a forced misgendering law that students can only be assigned pronouns based on the gender assigned at birth and can only use their birth name or derivatives of it. (HB121)

The story of the Four Chaplains
WHEN A TORPEDO from a German submarine struck the USAT Dorchester shortly after midnight on Feb. 3, 1943, panic ensued. At that moment, four chaplains emerged from the chaos: Methodist preacher George Fox, Jewish rabbi Alexander Goode, Presbyterian minister Clarke Poling, and Catholic priest John Washington.
The four had met at Chaplain School at Harvard University and became good friends. Together they boarded the Dorchester in January 1943. They had been at sea for less than 10 days when the torpedo struck. In the aftermath of the attack, the four chaplains calmed the men, organized an evacuation, and distributed life jackets. When the life jackets ran out, they gave up their own.
Life jackets, however, weren’t the only thing in short supply. The Dorchester had only enough lifeboat space to accommodate one quarter of its men. The officers offered spots to the chaplains, but they refused to go.
As the survivors rowed away from the ship, they could see the four chaplains – linked arm in arm, praying for the souls and safety of their men. Before the sun rose, the Dorchester was done. So were her four chaplains and nearly 700 others. Only 230 men survived.
Posthumously, the four chaplains received the Distinguished Service Cross and the Purple Heart. In 1988, Congress declared Feb. 3 “Four Chaplains Day,” and the Episcopalian Church honors all four men on that day with a liturgical feast.

Welcome to week six of the FAQ o’ the week series! Follow for weekly answers to questions about spiritual direction, bodywork, meditation, burnout care, ecstatic dance, spiritual direction supervision, and more. Today's question is: How is spiritual direction different from chaplaincy?
As someone who has served as a hospital chaplain, a hospice chaplain, and a spiritual director, I think chaplaincy and spiritual direction are close cousins. So close, that I sometimes think the two terms could be used interchangeably. (I’d be interested to hear any hot takes from other chaplains or spiritual directors about that.) I had a friend who once jokingly described spiritual direction as “chaplaincy for people who aren’t in crisis,” and I honestly struggle to find a better definition.
While spiritual direction certainly can provide care for people in crisis, the context for spiritual direction is typically less specific than that of chaplaincy. With plenty of exceptions, chaplaincy usually is practiced in the context of hospitals, hospice, schools, the military, etc. There are heavily emotionally charged circumstances in each of these settings, and chaplains serve as spiritual support for individuals in the thick of these circumstances. Again, while spiritual direction also could be helpful in and around these settings, spiritual direction tends to be less specialized in its scope. Spiritual direction lends itself to difficult times, neutral times, and euphoric times. It can serve as a temporary space of discernment for specific issues or life decisions, and it can be a normal part of one’s routine for general spiritual growth.
Again with plenty of exceptions, interactions with chaplains can be relatively brief (especially in a hospital setting), and relationships with spiritual directors tend to be more ongoing. There is nuance between the training and skill sets required for chaplaincy and spiritual direction, especially when chaplains need to prepare for specific contexts. But insofar as both fields invite interfaith and exploratory approaches to spirituality without direct instruction or dogma, they feel like different sides of the same coin to me. What do you think?

Carry On: Parade lessons
“Morn, Sir! The parade is ready for your inspection, Sir!” And the 4-Star General responded, “Carry on!” The Adjutant Commander, Diipo Abidoye, had marched forward to seek the General’s permission on the parade ground. And, of course, he received a yes for an answer. It was the first Passing out Parade and Decoration Ceremony of the Alfa Cadets, International Institute of Pastoral Education…

Jack Jenkins at Religion News Service:
WASHINGTON (RNS) — House Speaker Mike Johnson has launched an effort to select a new House chaplain, working with Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries on a framework to select a new person to fill the post just days after the current chaplain offered a Jan. 6 prayer asking God to help lawmakers defend against “enemies within.” Punchbowl News first reported the potential change last week, citing unnamed sources and noting the current chaplain, the Rev. Margaret Kibben, is now listed as “acting chaplain.” Johnson’s office confirmed to Religion News Service on Sunday (Jan. 12) that the speaker is moving to find a new chaplain and that he is working with the minority leader to develop a process. The office did not provide a reason for why Johnson is seeking a new House chaplain. Nor did Johnson’s office respond to requests to confirm another piece of Punchbowl’s reporting — namely, that Johnson, a conservative Southern Baptist, is allegedly considering Becky Tirabassi, a nondenominational Christian and co-pastor of Viewpoint Church in Newport Beach, Calif., as the new chaplain. Tirabassi pastors the church with her husband, Roger Tirabassi. Tirabassi, who served as a guest House chaplain in 2017, did not immediately respond to efforts to confirm the report, but she would be a shift for a position that has most recently been filled by clergy with a background in formal chaplaincy, which typically requires training in how to work with people of multiple faiths.
[...] In addition, during an Instagram Live broadcast on Jan. 6, 2021, Tirabassi said she participated — via FaceTime, as she was in California — in a prayer walk around the U.S. Capitol that morning. Tirabassi did not immediately respond to a request to clarify whether the prayer walk was an independent effort or one of multiple “Jericho Marches” staged around the Capitol at the time, which were led by supporters of Donald Trump who prayed that God would overturn the 2020 election results.
If Johnson, who was re-elected to the speakership earlier this month, moves forward with the effort, it would oust Kibben, a Presbyterian Church (USA) minister and retired rear admiral who previously served as the chief of chaplains in the U.S. Navy. Kibben was appointed by former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat, in 2020 and became the first female House chaplain in U.S. history. [...] More recently, however, she raised eyebrows for a prayer she offered on the fourth anniversary of the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. The event only featured Democrats and did not include Johnson, who was among the 147 members of Congress who objected to the 2020 election results the day of the Capitol attack. Standing near a window in the U.S. Capitol where rioters first forced their way in years earlier and flanked by Democrats Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Kibben called on God to remind believers to “serve you carefully and faithfully, to deal with all that come across the threshold — enemies within, enemies from without our own country.”
After the prayer Schumer said he hoped he and his fellow Democrats would “serve as an example to our Republican colleagues,” adding, “We are not election deniers. We lost the election, we regret it, but we believe in the strength of our democracy, and that when you lose an election, you roll up your sleeves and try to win the next one.” Removing a House chaplain is sometimes easier said than done. In 2018, then-House Speaker Paul Ryan asked then-House chaplain the Rev. Patrick Conroy, a Jesuit priest, to resign.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is seeking to replace the current House Chaplain Rev. Margaret Kibben of the PC(USA) with a chaplain more in tune with Johnson’s Christian nationalist agenda, such as potentially tapping nondenominational evangelical Becky Tirabassi.

An Interstellar Accomplishment
Whoever says “getting there is half the fun” is not referring to the arduous journey undertaken by writers seeking publication. We writers – I say “we” because odds are you share my literary interests – we writers believe we have something to say that is worth hearing. Something that can genuinely benefit others. That’s why we undertake the labor of writing, often without any financial reward.…
