Our main goal on the assignment was to tie the Chernobyl Power Plant (and Pripyat, the city evacuated after the nuclear accident in 1986) together with the current life in Slavutych; since both cities were built for and around the workers of Chernobyl. We had a plan, and the story unfolded perfectly. Of course there were aMANY levels to the work that CFF is doing, such as The Dogs of Chernobyl, helping past and current workers at the plant, local rehabilitation centers and hospitals. To top it off there was a story in itself around every corner, so photographing pretty much everything I saw has been a dream. Since the evacuation in 1986 the dogs left behind in the village of Pripyat have grown into a problematic wild population. With no medical care or attention their numbers have grown exponentially. The purpose of the Clean Futures Fund Dogs of Chernobyl program is a five-year plan to spay and neuter, vaccinate and treat the entire population. This upcoming year will be year two and I hope to have the opportunity to see this project through to the end.
