The Origin of Britannia Part 1
Lelouch: So here’s the first session. Suzaku: You haven’t changed, Lelouch. I don’t think people will understand what this session is for. Lelouch: I don’t need those who don’t understand. You can only learn if you’re prepared to learn! Suzaku: I’m not sure about those Zero-influenced lines… Oh, but you were always easily influenced as a child. You used to imitate superheroes. Lelouch: Stop talking about something so long ago! Suzaku: But aren’t we talking about history today? We have to talk about long ago. Lelouch: Urgh… being a smart aleck? I’m leaving. Suzaku: Sorry, so sorry. I’m ready to learn, Professor Lelouch. Lelouch: Good. Then tell me. Do you know when Britannia was formed? Suzaku: Of course. This year is 2017 of the Imperial Calendar, so it was 2017 years ago. Lelouch: Wrong. Suzaku: What? But the Imperial Calendar — “a.t.b.” means “Ascension Throne Britannia,” meaning “the year Britannia assumed the throne,” right? Lelouch: It seems you did your homework. I’m impressed. Suzaku: It’s common knowledge. Besides, I was tested during the Honorary Britannian appointment. Lelouch: Then, the grounds of the ascension? Suzaku: Um… I think it was triggered when Julius Caesar tried to invade… Lelouch: That’s right. And one of the Celtic tribal kings who resisted is said to be the ancestor of the Britannian Royal Family. He gained freedom from Rome and was coronated — although it was more like becoming a chieftan — that year is the first year of the Imperial Calendar. Now, what’s the name of this king? Suzaku: Um……… I give up. Lelouch: Hey, Suzaku! You don’t have this simple information!? It’s on the next test! Suzaku: Well, I was busy, so… Lelouch: Then look it up by the next time we meet. Got it?
youtube
The Origin of Britannia Part 2
Lelouch: So Suzaku, I’m assuming you did your homework. Suzaku: Of course, Lelouch. Here. Lelouch: Alwin I, eh? Yes, you’re correct. You pass! Suzaku: But people won’t understand what we’re talking about just from this! Lelouch: I, Lelouch, order you. If you want to know, buy the first volume of the DVD! Suzaku: You’re so easily influenced. Anyway… Alwin I is known to be the ancestor of the Britannian Royal Family. He gained freedom from Rome and became the first chieftan, and that year is the year Britannia was formed. I’m right, aren’t I? Lelouch: For now, yes. Then can you tell me who was the Emperor of Rome at the time? Suzaku: … I give up. Lelouch: It was Augustus. Remember that. Now, this Alwin I is only a figure from a legend and there is no proof that he existed. The history of the Empire, the “Britannia Chronology,” indicates that he really existed, but this chronology was created when the Holy Empire of Britannia was founded. So when they founded the empire is when they stuck on the legacy of the Royal Family’s blood as an afterthought to assure their ascension. It’s common in kingship and imperialism. Suzaku: So when am I supposed to recognize when Britannia was founded? Lelouch: I guess you can regard Britannia’s beginnings to be when the descendents of the Tudor family line who went to the New World ended and the Duke of Britannia started the imperial regime. The Imperial Calendar was established then too. It extended back in history and set the first year as a thousand and a couple hundred years ago. Suzaku: I see. Lelouch: Now, do you know when that year was? And who was the emperor who was coronated? Suzaku: Imperial Calendar 1813. The Emperor was Ricardo van Britannia I. Lelouch: Correct. It looks like you studied hard. Suzaku: Yeah. Cecile helped me too. Lelouch: Cecile? Who’s that? Suzaku: My superior of the department I’m in. Lelouch: A woman, eh? You’re good at debauching as always. Suzaku: Debauch… that’s not true! Lelouch: You were always good at getting older women to like you. Suzaku: I’m not doing it on purpose! Besides, why are you bringing up the past like that? Lelouch: Huh? You said it first. That we’re discussing “history.” Suzaku: Urgh…
**I didn't find the videos for the other History Lessons so you'll just have the translation from now on **

The Virgin Queen Elizabeth
Milly: What are you two doing? Suzaku: Oh, hello. I’m learing Britannian history from Lelouch. Milly: I see. But if it’s history, you should ask me. You know that my character’s description is “has a great knowledge in history and will cooly observe the changing world with Zero’s presence.” Lelouch: That description is way old. There’s no hint of it anywhere. Milly: Oh, Lelouch. You are so cheeky. Don’t you agree? Suzaku: Uh, um… I can’t say much there (sweat). Milly: Oh well. Even without that in my description, I’m good at history. The Ashford family has nobility in its line, after all. Lelouch: Formerly, you mean. Milly: Oh, shush. Whose fault do you think that is? Lelouch: Urgh… (sweating heavily). Well, anyway. It’s a good opportunity to ask the president if you have any questions, Suzaku. Suzaku: Let’s see… then can you tell me about the era of absolute monarchism — about the Elizabeth I from the Tudor dynasty? She’s called the Virgin Queen, but isn’t it weird that she has a chld? Milly: That names comes from the fact that she was single for her whole life. There’s her famous line, “I have already joined myself in marriage to a husband — my country.” Suzaku: But she has a kid. Was it Henry IX? Milly: Yes. Bluntly speaking, it was an illegitimate child. Elizabeth I didn’t marry, but she had many lovers. The Earl of Leicester, Earl of Essex and the Duke of Britannia are among the possible fathers. She switched between lovers all of her life. I’m a little jealous. Lelouch: So she was an Amazon. Like someone we know. Milly: What was that, Lelouch? What are you trying to say? Suzaku: I think he meant that you are similar to Elizabeth I. Lelouch: Hey, Suzaku, shut up! You idiot! Milly: I see. By the way, Vice President, did you finish the documents I asked for? Lelouch: No, I’ve been busy lately… I’ll have it done by tomorrow’s deadline. Milly: I changed my mind. I want it now. Lelouch: That’s high-handed, President! Milly: Call me Queen!

Sakuradite and the Age of Exploration
Suzaku: Unh… Shirley: What’s wrong, Suzaku? Are you constipated? Suzaku: Yeah, I feel so bloated… Hey, what are you making me say, Shirley? Shirley: Hee hee. I’ve been hanging around the President too long. But I’m surprised that you could kid around like that. Suzaku: Lelouch trains me well, doesn’t he? Shirley: You guys are really close… I’m so jealous. So, why were you groaning? Suzaku: This. “In (a)’s ‘Description of the World,’ he describes a country known as Jipang, meaning Japan, and that it is a golden island. But it is foolish to think that this country was rich in gold; rather, it was rich in (b). At the time in Europe, research that was inspired by © led to the discovery of an energy source but there was not enough of it, and this hindered the progress. (a)’s 'Discovery of the World’ moved the people to explore the world and eventually led to the discovery of the former United States, currently the conquered territory of Britannia.” Shirley: Let’s see… “Fill in the blanks. If you can.” What is this? Why does this worksheet sound so condescending? Suzaku: Lelouch made it. All of his worksheets are like this. Shirley: Oh, Lulu… (laugh) So the answer to “a” is “Marco Polo,” b is “Sakuradite,” and c is “alchemy.” Suzaku: Wow, you’re good in history! Shirley: No, I’m ot. But I’m good with minerals and geosciences. My father is a geologist. He works in the bureau and he goes around investigating geological conditions. Suzaku: I see… Shirley: But this worksheet really shows Lulu’s personality. Suzaku: Yeah, but I wish… it would show a little more love. Shirley: What are you talking about? It shows a ton of love! Lulu would never do this for anyone he didn’t care for. I’m really jealous now. Suzaku: Why don’t you tell him that you like him? Shirley: Well… huh!? How do you know that I… Suzaku: It’s actually quite obvious. I think the only one who doesn’t know is Lelouch. Shirley: I’ll tell him myself eventually! So please don’t tell him. Promise? Suzaku: Of course. Shirley: Thanks!

The Rebellion of Washington
Lelouch: ~~ ♪ C.C.: You’re in an awfully good mood. Humming, eh? Lelouch: !! Oh, I didn’t know you were there, C.C. C.C.: Why are you so flustered? … Huh? What’s that? Lelouch: It’s none of your buisness. C.C.: Let’s see… “Write the reason why the Rebellion of Washington in the Colonies ended in failure in 1770 a.t.b. in 1,200 words.” Is this homework? But it’s odd that you’re making the worksheet… Lelouch: It’s for Suzaku. Just go away! C.C.: The Rebellion of Washington… that was a long time ago. It’s easy. It’s because Ben betrayed the Continental Congress. Lelouch: Ben? C.C.: Oh, sorry, I mean Benjamin Franklin. Lelouch: Why can’t you just call him the Earl of Franklin? Yes, it’s true that Franklin went to France to ask Louis XVI to support their independence and failed. But that’s not the main reason they lost, is it? C.C.: Well, Louis was willing to help. But when Ben went to France, he met the Duke of Britannia. And he was offered a title and some land in the Colonies, and fell for it. Ben is the type who prefers research to war… he was a kind man. No, too kind. If Ben had asked Louis for support, Louis would’ve given them an army and the Continental Army wouldn’t have lost in Yorktown. And George — I mean, Washington — wouldn’t have died and America wouldn’t have become territorialized. Lelouch: The Duke of Britannia was involved!? That’s not in any of the history materials! C.C.: But it’s the truth. Lelouch: … You talk as if you saw it happen. Could you have possibly…!? C.C.: I’m C.C. I know everything. For example, I can name the song you were just humming. Lelouch: !!!!! C.C.: Was it from 8 years ago? The special effects fighting show that aired on Sunday mornings in Japan. Lelouch: Okay! I got it! Shut up! Sheesh, you’re such a… C.C.: You’re still naive, Lelouch. You can’t beat me in a thousand years. Lelouch: Do you mean figuratively? C.C.: Hee hee. Who knows?
The Humiliation at Edinburgh Lelouch: Good. Good. Damn. Good. Suzaku: Lelouch, can you stop correcting my worksheet out loud? Lelouch: No. Suzaku: Why not!? Lelouch: It’s fun watching your reaction when you get something wrong. Suzaku: Lelouch, you’re a sadist. Lelouch: Okay, 85%. You did pretty good. Suzaku: Because I have a good teacher. Lelouch: Hmph. Flattery won’t get you anything! Suzaku: I’m not flattering you. I really think so. Thanks, Lelouch. Lelouch: … Anyway, today’s session… Suzaku: Um, we’re at the end of the 1700s, when the citizens were starting a revolution. Lelouch: That’s right. Ahem. At the end of the 1700s, all of Europe was facing rebellions that were triggered by the French Revolution. That was when Napoleon started gaining power, was crowned, and had a hold on almost all of Europe. He looked to expand to the British Isles, won the Battle of Trafalgar and held naval supremacy. He then took his 120,000 men and landed on British soil and thereafter advanced to London. The queen at that time, Elizabeth III, was chased to Edinburgh where she was captured by the citizens who supported Napoleon. She was forced to abolish the monarchy in a.t.b. 1807, which is known as the… Suzaku: “Humiliation at Edinburgh.” Lelouch: Right. And the one who saved the queen is Ricardo van Britannia, the man who eventually founded the Britannia Empire. Suzaku: So his existence was important to history. Lelouch: Not so fast. That’s why you’re so naive. You forgot an important person. He will later be featured in many novels, plays and movies: Ricardo’s right-hand man and best friend, and the strongest knight. He was the head of the Knights of the Round, the “Knight of One” — Sir Richart Hector. Suzaku: Oh! I think I’ve heard of him! I think I saw the movie, too. Lelouch: Then there’s no problem. Without Richart, the escape from Edinburgh to the New World wouldn’t have happened. Suzaku: I see… Lelouch: Then next we’ll talk about the founding of the Britannia Empire. Make sure to study! Suzaku: Yes, Professor Lelouch.
The Formation of Britannia Nunnally: Oh, I didn’t know you were here. Suzaku: Yeah. Lelouch was teaching me. Nunnally: When you’re done, would you like to have dinner with us? They’re preparing it now. Suzaku: Thanks, I’d love to. Lelouch: Then Suzaku, we’ll move on to the formation of Britannia. Did you study for this? Suzaku: Leave it to me. So Elizabeth III and the aristocrats who followed her went to the New World and set up a capital on the East Coast. They started conquering America, but Elizabeth III died without leaving an heir. Lelouch: Yeah. And normally they would choose one from among the relatives, but Elizabeth appointed her lover, Ricardo van Britannia I, as the heir on her deathbed. And that is how the Holy Empire of Britannia came to be. Suzaku: It’s an unbelievable story. She’s known as the “Queen who lived an eventful life for love,” right? She might’ve been nice as a lady, but I’m doubtful about her as a ruler. Lelouch: Woah! Stop, Suzaku! Suzaku: Huh? Nunnally: I see… you don’t like Elizabeth III? You don’t think she had what it took to be a ruler? Suzaku: Huh? What’s going on? Why do I feel so cornered? Nunnally: I see… Excuse me, I must go. Suzaku: What happened? Did I say something? Lelouch: Nunnally is a fan of Elizabeth III. When she was younger, she read a highly innacurate story that depicted her as a tragic queen. Suzaku: Oh, I see. I’m sorry. I didn’t know. Lelouch: Well, it’s not anything new that you can’t read the atmosphere. I’m glad you didn’t bring up the theory that she assassinated Napoleon, because the damage would’ve been even more severe. Suzaku: You mean, the theory that Napoleon died on his way back to France after the loss at Waterloo because of poison in his food put in by Elizabeth’s men? Lelouch: Yeah. “I will never forget this humiliation.” It’s a famous quote from her last testament. Nunnally: Lelouch! Suzaku! Dinner is ready. Lelouch: !! Oh, thanks, Nunnally. That was quick. Nunnally: I helped a little, that’s why. Suzaku: Thanks. I thought you’d be mad. Nunnally: Of course not. It was I who invited you. “I will never forget.” Suzaku:/Lelouch: …!!! Nunnally: Please, eat up!
Arrival of the Black Ships Lelouch: So the democratic revolutions continued and the aristocrats from all over Europe, especially France, advocated the release of slaves and the war that started in the southern states became the Civil War. Any questions? Suzaku: None, I get it. Oh? I hear a knock. Come in! Kallen: Oh, Suzaku, Lelouch. What are you two doing? Suzaku: I’m having Lelouch teach me history. Lelouch: That’s right. So if you don’t need anything, you’re in the way. Get out. Suzaku: You don’t have to kick her out. I don’t mind. Come on, let’s continue. Lelouch: Sheesh, you’re too nice. Fine, let’s continue. Britannia worked on stabilizing the country while also looking at foreign opportunities, especially in the Pacific. And finally in 1853 they crossed the Pacific and arrived in Japan. Japan had an isolationist policy and realized that they’d fallen behind the rest of the world. “The denkisen awakens the Pacific slumber; just four cups and we cannot fall asleep.” Are you familiar with this? Suzaku: Of course. I’m Japanese. Lelouch: Oh yeah. Well, it’s obvious but this is a haiku describing the black ships of Britannia arriving at Japan. Suzaku:/Kallen: …! Lelouch: What’s wrong? Suzaku: Oh… just continue, Lelouch. Lelouch: …? Fine. So the denkisen refers to the Britannian ships with outer rings that were operated with electric motors. It must be a phonetic equivalent. They should’ve written it with the kanji for “electric boats,” but since Japan didn’t have the technology for electricity, they used different kanji… Suzaku:/Kallen: … Lelouch: Okay, if you gusy have something you want to say, just say it! Kallen: You’re wrong, Lelouch. That’s not a haiku but a parodied tanka. Lelouch: …!! It’s something similar! Kallen: No, it’s not. And the denkisen actually refers to the expensive tea that was loaded on the boat. Green tea has a lot of caffeine, so the four cups making people not fall asleep is referring to the fact that a commotion was made with just four ships. Lelouch: What!? Is that true, Suzaku!? Suzaku: Umm. Sorry, Lelouch. Kallen is right. Lelouch: Urgh! Kallen: I’m sorry, Lelouch. You were enjoying your rolse as a professor, but I guess I ruined your day. Lelouch: Shut up, you. Perry ship!!
Occupation of Japan
Lelouch: So this is the last session. Suzaku: You’re as abrupt as usual. But isn’t this a bad place to end this? Lelouch: What are you talking about? This is just as I planned. I can’t talk about the a.t.b. 1900s because it’s related to the main plot. I’ve been told not to say anything. Suzaku: Really? But this is the last DVD volume, isn’t it? Lelouch: Urgh! It’s the end but not the end! Anyway, here’s the last session! We’re going to skip to a.t.b. 2010!! Suzaku: You don’t have to yell. Oh, 2010 is the year we first met. Lelouch: Yeah. At that time Japan took advantage of how the Chinese Federation and Britannia were on hostile terms and stayed neutral. They used the sakuradite card, manipulated the distribution, and created a three-way standoff between the Chinese Federation, the EU, and Britannia to enjoy economic prosperity. Suzaku: And no one thought that Britannia would break the balance using military force. Lelouch: That’s right. The common assumption in international relations at the time was that it was taboo to attack Japan. Because once a fire started, all the other factions would follow suit and a full-scale war would break out. But the one who broke the rule… Suzaku: … Was Charles zi Britannia. The 98th emperor of the Holy Empire of Britannia. And your father. Lelouch: That man’s preparations were complete. As a blindside he sent all of the Knights of the Round to Africa and Inda, and the flagship ship, the Great Britannia, to the Indian Ocean; and while others were looking away from the Pacific he seized Japan quickly. The situation was practically decided in the first 24 hours, and by the time the Chinese Federation and EU tried to act, it was too late. And what happened after that… is not necessary to say, I guess. Suzaku: Yeah, you’re right. Lelouch: Now starting tomorrow, I’ll talk about the history of other countries. Don’t forget to study. Suzaku: Huh!? But you said this is the last session. Lelouch: It’s over as in what’s going to be in the DVD booklets. Your class will continue. We’re starting with the Chinese Federation. Suzaku: Why the Chinese Federation? Lelouch: “It’s not the end of the story” is a hint. Suzaku: Sigh… I guess there’s much more… Lelouch: Are you unhappy with that!? After all that I went through to teach you!? Suzaku: No, I’m very grateful, Professor. Lelouch: Very well. Then that’s the end of today’s session!

I will always laugh thinking about post canon code geass content:
1: akito the exiled, where we find out that in the timeskip between r1 and r2 lelouch was brainwashed by charles to use as a weapon and suzaku was👍 a-ok with it
2. code geass compilation movies where everything is the same except shirley is alive and also a co-conspirator of the black knights who helped smuggle lelouchs corpse out of the country
2.5 granblue crossover where lelouch and the handful of people he cares about get isekaid and he's 100% ok with never going back to the main plot. also other random scattered mobile game promo crossovers but this one is the most prominent
3. resurrection movie where lelouch, having lost his mind after killing god and his assisted suicide, is led around as an amnesiac zombie by cc for a year before he is inexplicably restored to his former self for the purpose of needing to inflict more horrific war crimes
4. post resurrection movie picture drama where lelouch and cc fistfight a pirate in the woods
5. official code geass mobile game where they canonized genetic clones and both incest and yaoi babies
6. The Official Post Resurrection Canon Anime Movies Code Geass: Roze Of The Recapture Which I Bet You Didn't Know About

Rolo over the years
28th September is when Turn 25 “Re;” first aired, and together with Lost Stories also wrapping up R2 in its latest update, I’ve been remembering just how I miss what Code Geass was like before the year 2012ish. Rolo has been, in my opinion, treated worse since then.
Apologies in advance, as I'm going to complain, but I want to share what I remember about a time which may be forgotten or unknown to younger fans:
Before Akito, Code Geass’ “canon” story was mainly the 50 episodes of the anime. Picture/Illust Dramas, season 1 Sound Episodes (R2 SEs mostly stopped being serious) and official publications here and there were also part of the canon, but beyond that, comics like Majiko’s, Nightmare of Nunnally, or videogames such as Lost Colors diverged sufficiently from the anime to be clearly treated as AU spin-offs. Code Geass ended with Lelouch dying, and despite plenty of “the cart driver is Lelouch” theories, the creators themselves stated that Lelouch was dead (can’t remember the source, but it’s probably well documented somewhere). I miss when Lelouch stayed dead, not just as a Rolo fan, but because that’s what made the story bittersweet. That’s what made Continued Story a song I personally couldn’t listen to. All the fanarts of the characters being happy together when you knew Lelouch never got to experience that… It was sad, but in a pretty way. And yet, I guess many viewers do like Lelouch resurrecting, considering that both Lost Stories and Rozé follow that canon. For me, watching L.L. do nothing but speak in cryptic messages with C.C. is sadder than accepting his death, and not the “pretty” kind this time, but the “Lelouch was forcibly turned into someone who isn’t him” kind of sad. As for Rolo, during R2, Lelouch lived for 5 more episodes after Rolo’s death. And in such a brief period, he remembered Rolo as many as 5 times: Turn 20 preview, when Rivalz asked in Turn 20, Turn 21 preview, Turn 24 when Lelouch recalls the people who sought happiness, Turn 25 when his life flashes before his eyes. Back around 2008~2010, believing Rolo had become important to Lelouch was easy. Hikari (summary) was canon. Kiseki no Tanjoubi most likely isn’t, but Lelouch and Rolo had the main roles and Lelouch worries when Rolo gets tired. New official illustrations were still being released. The Special Edition Zero Requiem was dedicated to Shirley and Rolo because they inspired Lelouch’s Zero Requiem plan. That’s a lot of Rolo attention coming not just from the staff, but Lelouch himself. Yet resurrected!Lelouch doesn't remember Rolo again! Except for maybe just once, when Rolo and Euphy were saving him… and unfortunately for me, he uses kimitachi, which implies he was addressing Euphy (he would have used omaetachi with Rolo)… 😭 I also gacha'd Emperor Lelouch a couple days ago, hoping to find ロロ in any of his lines, but nothing. Code Geass’s canon expanding after R2 mostly took good things away from Rolo, and added bad things: -Akito and Oz both did damage to Rolo and Lelouch’s meeting. When only R2 existed, we assumed that Rolo had met Lelouch very shortly after Charles’ Geass, and that Rolo and Lelouch spent a whole year together. Akito shortened their happy year because Lelouch now needed to be Julius first, and Oz introduced Clara, who, turns out, was actually the initial choice to replace Nunnally instead of Rolo?! And even though I don’t think she even got to meet Lelouch, I don’t like how Rolo was no longer *the* Nunnally replacement. Since Rolo mentions unmei in Arabesque, I think he would have preferred to believe Lelouch and him were “destined” to meet -Couldn’t Benio and Savitri's stories be told without involving Rolo negatively? Did he need more sins? Ohgi and Nina have been redeemed in recent years, while Rolo… didn’t kill Shirley in the movies, but in the Fukkatsu manga and Lost Stories he did, so I still feel like he killed Shirley in the Fukkatsu canon -We don't talk about GeaGene -Mario/Maya ruining Rolo’s sacrifice There’s another piece of knowledge seemingly lost to time, which is that those pictures of Lelouch and Rolo aren't official. You know the ones. They were drawn by Yukie Sakou, who WAS an official animator/illustrator, but she released Anniversary & Memorial on her own. I've seen misinformed comments... Something else about Fukkatsu: I liked C.C. better when she wanted to live and be happy without depending on the protagonist for it. But if C.C. fans disagree, they certainly know her better than I do.

Hi! I just recently got back from your Kagino and Kalulu's analysis (a new Code Geass fan here, hello!) and can I just say that I agree too to your analysis? Especially, with how forced and (sudden?) the Kagino ship is. If I may ask for your opinion too regarding other pairing unrelated to Kallen or Lelouch (but if not, feel free to ignore this ask! it's a-no problem), do you think Schneizel x Kanon ship are canon in the series? or is it just a ship that the fans made up too due to Kanon's and Clovis' words regarding Schneizel in R2 picture drama?
The truth is that "forced" is the best term to describe the Kagino ship. I learned from a fan who was present at the R2 stream that Kagino was a ship that the media made up after they tried to push a Kallen x Xingke ship and it didn't work out. Kagino is a ship that only Suzalulu and CluClu fanboys cling to, why? Because Kallen stands between Lelouch and the target of their interest (i.e. C.C. and Suzaku).
What's funny about all this is that Kallen and Gino don't have a romantic relationship in the series (not even in the AU did the creators dare to pair them up, considering the AU is solely supported by fanservice), just as Lelouch and C.C. don't have one. Neither do Lelouch and Suzaku have a romantic relationship. The problem is that fans can't watch a boy and a girl interact without believing that they are romantically attracted to each other, just like fujoshis can't resist shipping the two male protagonists. All of that I'm telling you is a reflection of the fact that society thinks that men and women can't be friends, as well as that two men/boys can't have an emotional and affectionate connection without being a homosexual couple. It's crap.
By the way, I like that you talk about ships because I think we should differentiate ships from relationships. People can ship whatever characters they want, but they can't force their ships or the crazy ideas they have about them on canon. Kalulu, Kagino, CluClu and Suzalulu are ships, but only Kallen and Lelouch had a romantic relationship in the series among those here (that they didn't stay together and we don't know exactly if Lelouch reciprocated her feelings is another issue).
About Kanon and Schneizel, they don't say it explicitly in the series or in the Pictures Dramas, but there are enough clues that they are in a homosexual relationship (or that, at least, Schneizel is not straight). It's something that doesn't refute the canon. It should be a ship supported more by fans, especially fujoshis who are hungry for ships. They seem to have a healthy relationship and that's something hard to find in Code Geass.

Random Rolo Ramblings 6: Kururugi and Canon

My intention was to write a few lines about the relationship between Rolo and Suzaku and post them around Suzaku's birthday. Well, it did not happen quite like that, but here they are. Admittedly, there is not really much to write about as far as the series canon goes, and here I would already like to digress a little: By '(series) canon' I mean everything that is officially part of the Code Geass story (people, places, events) as it unfolds in the TV series, not the recap films, which divert from the series canon and partly tell a different story. You can consider them a form of Code Geass elseworld or parallel universe/alternate timeline (apparently Genesic Re;CODE did that) or just see them as a separate movie canon which includes Lelouch of the Resurrection. (Correct, 'canon' is the second main topic of this article.)
As far as the Geass series canon goes, it certainly includes R1, R2 and also Akito the Exiled. I would also add the picture dramas, but that is a matter of debate and one could argue that their canonicity is not on the same level as that of the series' episodes. There are also the drama CDs, but, like I wrote before, these are just too far out there to be part of the official story. There may be official books that Sunrise considers canon, but my personal philosophy is that when we talk about films or TV shows, only what's on the screen is canon.
So what about Suzaku and Rolo? If we follow the show's internal chronology, they first meet in the final scene of Akito the Exiled. We get two reaction shots of Suzaku's face, first when Rolo enters the room, accompanied by the two Geass Order guards, then after he tells him that Charles has 'granted' 'Julius Kingsley' another audience. (By the way, look how tall he is in comparison to Suzaku. Must be the boots.) In both cases, Suzaku looks both quite angry and extremely wary. In the first case, Suzaku even makes a hard-to-define moaning sound that sounds both apprehensive and annoyed. In other words, he does not seem happy to see Rolo at all. He might be uncertain at first whether the rescue party are friend or foe, but even after Rolo has made it clear that they are on his side, he looks as happy as an employee who hates his boss and is told that he can go back to work now. This may have nothing to do with Rolo as a person, but with the unpleasantries that await Suzaku and Lelouch, but to me this look also says "Who's that creep they've sent to pick us up?"
Luckily, there are no hard feelings between Suzaku and Rolo in R2 despite this encounter, and this is obviously because R2 was produced before Akito. There is only one conversation between Suzaku and Rolo (and Villetta) in the OSI's secret control room, (which I have covered before, more than once, actually). While Rolo and Villetta have more or less always treated each other as equals, Suzaku clearly acts as the one in charge. Everyone is very polite, but Suzaku seems to be doubtful about the effectiveness of their surveillance, which triggers a response from Roll that makes him appear a little offendes, but secretly he is certainly worried that Suzaku might find out that Lelouch has regained his memories (and that he has changed sides). In a different world, to Star Trek, they may be friends, at least they don't hate each other, but in this situation, Rolo mostly regards Suzaku as a threat, which is why he even offers Lelouch to kill him. When Suzaku arranges a phone call with Nunnally to figure out whether Lelouch has regained his memory, Rolo thwarts his plans with his time-stopping powers. Apart from that, we see him giving Suzaku wary sideways glances, and that, to my knowledge, is about it. Not much, given the fact that older official artwork often shows Lelouch, Suzaku and Rolo as a kind of love-hate-whatever triangle.
What I would really like to know is what happened between the trio's journey home from Euro Britannia and Rolo's/Suzaku's arrival at Ashford. Didn't they have any conversation about 'Julius' resp. Lelouch? It would have made sense for Suzaku to brief Rolo about Lelouch's character traits so that he knows how to handle him and how to play the role of the little brother convincingly. Moreover, the Vincent's design is based on the Lancelot's, would Suzaku not be the perfect tutor for Rolo as a Knightmare Frame pilot? That would also explain Rolo's piloting skills. (Wouldn't it be fun if Lloyd was also involved? Maybe Rolo had a reason to call him "pervy four-eyes" in that infamous sound episode.)

Of couse there is that slightly weird scene in the second recap movie where Bismarck introduces Suzaku to Rolo (who is dressed like an accountant and looks as if he hadn't had any sleep for a week and not seen any daylight for a month, quite the contrast to his Akito outfit and posture) and Villetta. Here it is made more obvious than in R2 that Suzaku is in charge of the operation. In this scene it is also acknowledged that Suzaku and Rolo have met before, and maybe Suzaku's bad memories are the in-story explanation for Suzaku's so bluntly (and rudely) addressing Rolo's faulty Geass, which is one of the things I hated about this scene, the other one being Rolo's new alias ('Nebiros'/'Neblos'). Rolo's resentful look is more than understandable. I know why the writers made Suzaku say that: they needed a quick way to establish Rolo's weakness, but it still seems so out of character for someone like Suzaku. (I like Suzaku thanking Rolo for rescuing them better, even though he did not look particularly grateful when Rolo freed him and Lelouch from prison.) Villetta's defending Rolo and praising his skillfulness, on the other hand, is perfectly in character for her. Anyway, this scene does not contradict series canon, so I can potentially accept it as "this is what happened" to fill a gap in the story, I'm just not sure if I want to.
Which is why I am now turning to the readers. How do you personally deal with the canon problem, in Code Geass and otherwise? After all, reboots, recaps, remakes etc. are a pretty common phenomenon in the world of anime and elsewhere. Do you want to have a rigid canon or do you like to see alternate/new/fresh versions of the same story? What is your personal Code Geass canon, the two seasons of the TV show, Akito, the recap films, Lelouch of the Resurrection, the mobile games? Please let me know and thank you for reading all this, these articles are called "ramblings" for a reason.
P.S. Sorry for mostly using screencaps that I have used before.

Code Geass Season 1 picture Drama 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 // Canon
Code Geass picture drama are short scene which relates various events which happened in between episode or even before the beginning or after the end of the anime. All of them are canon to the anime, but some have been added within the flow due to the AU Release causing some confusion within the fandom.
I'll list in there, in the right order, all of those which are canon to the anime only; I also uploaded all of them (minus the 2nd picture drama of Season 1, because the content was too ecchi for the platform I used) so i'll link them so you can see those if you wish to.

In 2009 a.t.b., 10-year-old Lelouch vi Britannia carries his blind and paralyzed sister Nunnally on his back as he climbs the steps to a Shinto shrine in Japan. As Nunally asks him what a shrine is, Lelouch explains that it is the Japanese version of a church, and Nunnally asks if the Pope is the emperor of Japan. Lelouch says that Japan has an elected prime minister and that it's just a coincidence that Prime Minister, Genbu Kururugi's home is a Shinto shrine. As Nunnally asks Lelouch if he alright, carrying her along those stairs he reassures her, narrating about how at that time he didn't want for any japanese person to even touch Nunnally. After reaching the top of the stairs, Lelouch is shocked to find out that they'll be living in a shabby storeroom. As Nunnally asks what the room is like, Lelouch chooses to lie and says it has white walls and decorated windows. Lelouch spots somebody and demands that they come forward.
A boy dressed in a hakama comes out, claiming this place was his before they came in and asks them in a very condescending tone if Britannia plans to colonize Japan. Lelouch counters that Japan isn't much different as they are controlling other countris too, but underdevellopped ones and says that Suzaku should ask his father about that, as Suzaku calls him a liar. Suzaku insists that Lelouch is indeed a liar for he lies about the storehouse, asking im where the white walls and decorated windows are, pissing Lelouch off as he yells him to stop and charges forward. Suzaku easily knocks down Lelouch and begins to beat him up, when Nunnally cries out and asks Suzaku to stop. She says she'll do anything he asks, and he realizes that she's blind. Suzaku panics and quickly apologizes before running out of the room. Nunnally asks who that was, and Lelouch tells her it was Prime Minister Kururugi's son. Adult Lelouch then narrates that's how they first met and how Suzaku was his first friend, and the man who would become his worst rival.

The Drama begins as all the female members of Ashford Academy's Student Council are gathering while taking a bath. Milly apologizes to Kallen for not making her welcome party more exciting because of the announcement of Prince Clovis' s death which kinda killed the mood, even for her. Kallen replies that she doesn't mind it, but questions on why all of them are together in the bath especially her as well since she had already taken a shower earlier. However, Milly states that this is another way that they can all get to know each other better and implies that Shirley would be upset if Kallen actually went home wearing Lelouch's clothes. Shirley quickly shoots down Milly's statement and instead chooses to question as to why Lelouch was acting strangely after the announcement of Clovis' death ;Milly replies that Nunnally was also listening closely; Kallen then mentions that she noticed that Lelouch treated her differently than he does with Nunnally.
Milly jokingly states that it is because he loves his sister very much, which makes it complicated for some other people. Shirley follows up by asking Milly why she is staring at her and Milly ponders that it's a shame because she really has a killer body, and her beauty should be enough to knock Lelouch off. Shirley ask her to not peep at her and snap back that she has the best figure around; Milly ask her if that's the case and stands in her full glory, making an impression on everyone. As a soft voice says, Milly is intimidating everyone, Kallen quickly agrees before noticing Nina said that and that she looks utterly different without her glasses on. Milly agrees that she does and mentions that she has been trying to convince her all this time to wear contacts, taking her chance at teasing her; Kallen is confused as Milly stated "All this time" to which Nina replies that she and Milly grew up together because her grandfather worked in Milly's grandfather's company in developing knightmares. Kallen then makes the connexion with the Ashford name and excitingly ask if they are those who devellopped the Ganymede and the Io series; Milly is surprised to see that Kallen knows so much about what were only Knightmare prototype, leading Kallen to get back into her frail act while pretending she probably read about that in a book somewhere. Milly goes on talking about those never reached advanced stage because of the costs and how the compagny went bankrupt; Nina apologizes as she thinks it's because of her grand father but Milly denies it, putting the blame on her own grandfather, as he wasted money by throwing huge parties, all the time; Shirley notices Milly inheritated his taste for parties, to which Milly agrees but thinks you can only enjoy yourself like that when you are a student. Suddenly, Milly asks if Kallen is available the day after tomorrow to which she replies that she can't as she has to go to Tokyo Tower that day. Milly decides that it is fine and that she can just do it right now, by asking Kallen, what are her three sizes because they need it for costumes or events. Kallen ask her is that's cosplay and directly refuses when Milly agrees. With no choice left, Milly orders Shirley to hold Kallen back and proceeds to get her measurments. This leaves Kallen to become embarrassed and shout out loud.

Jeremiah and Villetta are in his office having a conversation with each other. Villetta asks Jeremiah how it feels to actually be sitting in the Viceroy's chair. Jeremiah responds that it is bad manners to ask something like that; Villetta reminds Jeremiah that her lineage is different from his but he thinks differently and reassures her that after the Purist Faction takes over, he will personally submit a proposal for her to become a Baroness, and she'll be a real noble with a lineage to be passed on. He then explains that Suzaku Kururugi's execution is scheduled for tomorrow and leaves the details to her. Jeremiah continues by stating that he cannot receive further shame as it has now been twice that he allowed members of the Royal Family to be killed. He tells Villetta of his time when he received his first mission as a soldier eight years ago to were he was assigned as a guard at the Aries Imperial Villa. As he narrates, he remembers that because of an order, a minimum number of guards were on duty that day and were not able to defend from rebels.
This became his first failure and he was moved to Area 11 afterwards. Jeremiah begins to cry because of these failures of his and because Area 11 became the grave of the late Lelouch and Nunnally and now of Clovis. Villetta tries to comfort him, telling him i's not like him to act this way, to which Jeremiah straighten back, agreeing she is right and states that his sister, Lilycia would laugh at him right now in his current state. He decides to continue on with his work in order to regain his former honor for Prince Clovis and former Queen Marianne. Then, Jeremiah calls Villetta to his side and aspires to become the Knight of One. It ends with a scene from episode 4 after Jeremiah encounters Zero and is already under his Geass influence ordering his men to stand down and allow Zero to escape with Suzaku Kururugi.

Out on the Ashford Academy front lawn, Rivalz is working on his motorbike with Suzaku while they talk about how the latter first met Lelouch. Suzaku has just told him that Lelouch used to come over to visit during summer break when they were kids, but politely says that they had not spent much time together. Rivalz awkwardly asks him to stop being so formal as they are just classmates. Suzaku subsequently apologizes and speaks more casually. Since Lelouch is very secretive about his past, Rivalz says he is happy to have finally met someone who knew Lelouch when he was younger. When Rivalz asks Suzaku to hand him a ten-millimetre wrench, Suzaku corrects him with the proper size and expresses his familiarity with the bike. Suzaku fondly explains that a woman who owned the same bike used to help him a lot before joined the army and it was his job to maintain the bike. This person, however, has already passed away. After Suzaku says that he lives in the cramped military quarters at the university across the street, Rivalz asks if he wants to be his roommate at the dorms; a hint of loneliness in his voice. Suzaku declines as he has to attend to this duties there, but thanks Rivalz for the kind offer.
In the military quarters across the street, Cecile asks Lloyd to finish up the important paper work that will finalize their move into the university's space. Lloyd says he will leave it all up to her as he always does, noting how many years they have been working together. She tells him that it is wasteful to put off doing things for later and he replies that he sees "love" inside of her. Cecile is initially flustered. He then reasserts that it is love; love for research. Unamused by the joke, Cecile asks for authority over the general affairs of their engineering core and Lloyd grants it. Suzaku enters the building immediately after, stiffly reporting to duty according to military procedure. Cecile sternly tells Suzaku to simply say "I'm back" instead as social and military rank should not play part here. She insists that this military quarter should be treated like their home. After some hesitation, Suzaku assents and says "I'm back." Cecile and Lloyd then respond with a warm "Welcome home!".

Cornelia and Euphemia are in the dressing room at Prince Clovis's beach resort. Cornelia questions Euphemia if she has to wear that swimsuit as she believes that it is too revealing. However, Euphemia on the other hand states that out of all the swimsuits that Clovis designed, that one is the most appropriate for her. Euphemia tells her to put it on and helps her in doing so. Andreas Darlton and Guilford are seen standing outside guarding the dress room. Darlton can't wait to see Cornelia in a swimsuit and mentions on how his sons would be jealous right now if they were here. Guildford asks if he means the Glaston Knights and states that he respects Darlton for taking in orphans but thinks it's not appropriate to speak like that; Darlton then mentions how much of a stick up in his ass Guilford has, to which the knight can't disagree. After that, Guilford notes that even if both of them are bodyguards for the princesses and have to be in swimsuits he thinks Darlton might be going a tad bit overboard with hiding a gun in his swimming trunks to which Darlton replies that he might be right, as it's obviously visible (you can guess where the gun was put) We then jump to Suzaku who is sitting on the beach with Cecile asking her if it's really alright to be relaxing while they are supposed to be guards. Cecile states that it is alright since no one knows Cornelia is the surprised guest of the resort,and when Suzaku mentions Lloyd's absence she insists that she couldn't care less. Eventually, Suzaku compliments Cecile on her looking good in a swmisuit, making the lady all flustered by the compliment as he shouldn't tease a lady like that;
While Suzaku tries to explain he wasn't teasing, he is interrupted by a voice who has recgnized him ; It was Shirley, who has just arrived with the whole of the Ashford Student council; As Suzaku wonderd what they are doing her, Milly tells her that she was invited because her father is a local dignitary and she brought everyone with her ; Indeed Nunnally, Lelouch and Sayoko are also there. As Suzaku is surprised to see them, Nunnally explains that while she can't move her legs, she is still able to move within the water. She then shyly asks to Suzaku if he'd agree on swimming with her; Suzaku replied he'd love to, but he is kinda working;
Cornelia then appears on stage making an announcement to open Clovis' beach resort to the public. Lelouch instantly recognizes Cornelia with a sour face to Shirley's dismay who mentions it to Milly as it looks like Lelouch is going to attack her. Milly, quite unsure with her explanation, replies that it is normal for a male high school student to want to be physically close to someone as sexually attractive as Cornelia, before asking Suzaku for his thoughts on this, leading him to reluctantly agree. As Nunnally wonders if Cornelia really looks that great and wonders how she achieved such a figure, Milly guesses she must have trained herself with various men in different sort of ways, shocking even Shirley with the subtext. Nunnally then decides to ask Lelouch to train her to be as great as Cornelia. Lelouch also agrees that it would be important for Nunnally to learn and that he won't hold back with her, to which Nunnally says she'll do her best to satisfy him, leading Shirley to totally take it the wrong way.
For the next Season 1 picture drama it's right there

Nunnally In Wonderland Sections
Here is a checklist of all the sections in the side story 'Nunnally in Wonderland'. I will update them regularly with the links to each section whenever they're out.
(AN: If you're wondering why there's a whole 6 sections missing in this recount, that's because I didn't archive those sections since they were just parts of the Nunnally in Wonderland picture drama word for word with screenshots from said drama in the background. If you want the full ins and outs to that section of the story, just watch the Nunally in Wonderland picture drama. In case you don't know what it is, its a cute 10 minute long retelling of Alice in Wonderland with all the Code Geass characters narrated by Lelouch. It should be available on most anime streaming platforms that also have CG content.)

Last Song: Are 'Friends' Electric? - Gary Numan
Currently Watching: rewatching Bones (2005) and Boris (2007), the italian sitcom responsible for my goldfish profile picture and tangentially also the title of this blog.
Last Movie: yesterday was the first day of cineclub so, Opera (1987). I love Dario Argento but this movie....... very aesthetically pleasing as usual but the actors and the dialogues... Marò raga erano dei cani, senza offesa ai cani.
Sweet/Spicy/Savoury: Savoury without any speck of doubt, I'm whatever the antithesis to a sweet tooth is.
Relationship: I broke up with my boyfriend of 2 years exactly a week ago actually :D fun times
Current Obsession: Those two maniacs that say they're supposed to hunt things and save people but honestly if you told me they were omoerotic serial killers I'd believe you more - although lately I've been kinda falling back again into Code Geass, I'm so mad that this anime has so much potential for introspection but they hid it behind school drama and mechas??? Like the main plot is literally a forgotten prince becomes the leader of an independentist terrorist group driven by the desire to make a kinder world for his disabled little sister and his main antagonist (not villain, more like opposing force) is his childhood best friend??????? who basically is aiming for the same things but he wants to do it legally. But they just end up destroying eachother and themselves in the process????? And it gets increasingly more tragic and traumatic and they betray eachother and they only have eachother and it all goes to shit and- Man, I need to rant so bad about this 🥲
Last Thing I Googled: "L and Light ship name" I couldn't remember for the life of me, I'm very ashamed (-that I didn't remember the name, not about the ship).
Tagging (I can't come up with 9 people probably) with no obligation and no pressure
