so I've been playing around with the oklab color space, trying to implement it myself from scratch just to make sure I understand it, and one very fun problem with trying to display an arbitrary 2D slice of a perceptually uniform color space is that it's super non-trivial to select a background color to represent "this oklab coordinate is not displayable with srgb", because like it's gotta be in high contrast with every color on the boundary of the space. very fun coding challenge

also, the only times you should be messing with the color space of your work are before you start when you're setting up your art program (to make sure it works with your monitor) and at the end when you're saving an exported version of the file (to make sure it's in the right format for your print shop, web viewers, etc.). all in-progress versions of files should be saved in your art program's native format to preserve layers, color space, effects, and things of that nature.

none of the color settings are universal, so read up on what each one does before switching them around.

for web services that apply their own compression to posts (e.g. Discord), it may be best to convert your art at the end to sRGB before posting. thanks to @baekhest in the reblogs for the link.

in short: you are actually least likely to have problems with your colors looking different on the web if you set your program's color space to sRGB and export the final picture as sRGB. if you're printing your art, if you want to work in a wider color space, or if you want to do anything more other than draw things specifically for the internet, DO MORE RESEARCH

Just to make a point, every time I finished a panel of this I would export it as a PNG on the perceptual setting and use it as a color reference for the next panel

EDIT: If you're still having problems, it might help to switch from "Save/Save as" to "Export (as a) Single Layer". Just. Make SURE the box labeled "Expression Color" is set to RGB. I've been messing with this all day, and it looks like this combination of settings will allow exported PNGs to maintain their colors perfectly. To you. So far both Discord and Toyhouse still only display desaturated images and I cannot for the life of me figure out why
