For many, many years we’ve pointed out that broadband usage caps are hugely profitable bullshit, used by regional telecom monopolies to rip off captive customers.
The limits serve no technical purpose outside of price gouging. ISPs like Comcast spent years pretending they were necessary to “manage network congestion,” but after numerous journalists, academics, executives, and even the industry’s own leaked internal comms pointed out that was technically and provably false, most big ISPs just stopped trying to justify them whatsoever.
The question then becomes: where were U.S. regulators during this thirty-year span?
This was, after all, regional monopolies clearly abusing a local lack of competition (they helped cultivate) to erect artificial barriers they then charged consumers extra to bypass. The limits are unfair and deceptive, harm consumer welfare, hamper broadband affordability, and create all manner of potential free market distortions by enabling ISPs to exempt their own services from the fake limits (see: the fight over net neutrality).
Only just this year has the Biden FCC started expressing any serious interest in taking direct action against the practice. This week, the agency issued a notice of inquiry (NOI) indicating that the agency is “looking into” the practice, and why “despite increased broadband needs” and the “technical ability to offer unlimited data plans,” such restrictions still persist.

So with the Advent of AI Actors, voices, and how many artists have in their contracts: "We literally own your ass for longer than you'll be alive and your family and estate will get nothing when you die, but we (the company) will live forever."
A contract that I have never signed myself, So I wouldn't know how that feels.
Anyway, with the Advent of AI Actors, the bottleneck is in the *quality* of the produced media. You wouldn't know this, but streaming services and DataCaps have limited the quality of any type of movie or TV show quite a bit. And Anime and vtubers specifically, they either stream to a lot of people "audio only" or their lack of depth and flat color schemes drops the datasize quite a bit, which makes it easier for audiences to participate. (And watch)
Now, theatrical releases, and cable releases get to stream at HD4K ezpz. And while some streaming services offer 4K, there's no guarantee every piece of media is offered at that quality, and there's not guarantee that if it is offered at the quality, that it won't just be upscaled.
Now some people may say "the human eye can't even tell the higher quality--technology has surpassed human limitations!" But that's not true, we thought that every step of the way, starting with color tv where it was "realer than real" and then cable tv, and vhs, and DVD. But audio, video, and technology enthusiasts have since pushed the boundaries with "lossless" recordings that your average user doesn't typically play around with (even though you can record videos on your phone at better quality than you can download from the Internet or upload to TikTok.)
AI's limitation is that it cannot upscale into newer cleaner formats. It will never be able to, it needs the detail that it doesn't have access to (that it is currently doing ad libs with) think of zoom on your camera, when it is zoomed out there's missing detail, but if you're interested in moles, you can zoom right in on it and get every hairy detail.
And as technology advances, so will our ability be to capture and stream those details.
But you might be thinking; well telecom companies won't raise DataCaps, and nobody uses physical media anymore so we're free to go with less-than DVD quality, probably for decades to come.
But then what incentive do viewers have to go to the movie theaters then when there isn't a better quality to watch in theaters than the 380p (with buffering) that you can get from your phone?
Well people will buy a bigger TV then (To stream that *same* 380p through Comcast, because you hit your datacap thanks to Fortnight and Roblox downloads, because why does a landline have a data cap anyway!?)
I'm not denying there is a technological bottleneck here, advocates of the free and open internet have been talking about it being a problem for decades. But the leading argument against for decades was "Nobody uses the Internet anyway".
At the very last second you wanna do a UTurn? It's too late for that, now you get to sit in traffic waiting on buffering like it's 1999 all over again.
What this means for the movie industry: is that nobody will want to buy the media you've created and expected a long-term paycheck from after that bottleneck is cleared up. That means that all your investments now will lose out to anybody with a YouTube channel that records in 4k and scales their videos down.
Because people will be able to tell there's digital actors, just like they were able to tell in Final Fantasy Spirit Within, even though all the headlines talked about "This is so realistic! nobody won't be fooled that animation isn't real again!"

Nasdaq sharply lower, oil spikes ahead of NFP
US stocks ended lower on Thursday as tech issues took a hammering following warnings from Meta Platforms and Microsoft about rising AI costs with their earnings which were released after-hours on Wednesday.
The mood was also cautious ahead of more mega-cap tech earnings from Apple, down 1.8%, and Amazon, off 3.4%, posted after the Thursday close.
In the event, Apple reported record third quarter revenue but saw a decline in net income, with its shares falling 1.9% in after-hours trade. But Amazon jumped 5.6% after-hours as its numbers beat market expectations.
And chipmaker Intel, having fallen 3.5% during the session, leapt 15% higher in after-hours trading following its results, with investors excited by an improved outlook.
At the closing bell in New York, the blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average was 0.9% lower at 41,763, while the broader S&P 500 shed 1.9% to 5,705, losing all its monthly gains, and the tech-laden Nasdaq Composite dropped 2.8% to 18,295

Putting on the pressure, Facebook and Instagram owner Meta fell 4.1% and software giant Microsoft dropped 6.5% on the AI concerns, even as both saw their earnings for the third quarter beat expectations.
Among other results on Thursday, eBay fell 8.1% after the eCommerce firm reported disappointing guidance for the crucial holiday shopping season.
Robinhood slumped 16.7% after the trading platform reported that its third-quarter earnings missed expectations, although crypto trading volume and revenue doubled year-on-year.
Uber Technologies fell 9.3% after the ride-hailing firm’s gross bookings grew at its slowest pace in over a year, even as it edged past quarterly profit estimates.

But Comcast rose 3.4% after the NBC owner reported higher quarterly sales and said it may spin off its cable networks.
US economic data released on Thursday showed that the personal consumer expenditures (PCE) index - a key inflation metric closely monitored by the Federal Reserve - slowed to an annualised growth rate of 2.1% in September, in-line with economists’ expectations, down from an upwardly revised reading of 2.3% in August. Meanwhile, the core PCE metric came in at 2.7% annually, above expectations of 2.6% but equaling August's growth.
Elsewhere, as traders await Friday’s September non-farm payrolls report, the latest weekly jobless claims dipped to 216,000, down from 228,000 in the prior week.
Meanwhile, US employers announced 55,597 job cuts in October, according to the latest Challenger survey, down from September's reading of 72,821 but markedly higher than 36,836 at the same time a year earlier.
Finally, the Chicago Fed's purchasing managers index sank to 41.6 in October, according to the Institute of Supply Management, down from 46.6 in September and well short of expectations for a reading of 47.0.
The key figures all come with Federal Reserve officials set to meet next week to contemplate their next policy decision having moved to cut borrowing costs by a bigger than expected 50 basis points in September. The latest interest rate decision comes on Wednesday, November 7, just two days after the too-close-to-call US Presidential election.
On the commodities front, oil prices rose on Thursday, extending a rally made in the previous session due to stronger than expected US fuel demand and reports that OPEC+ could delay a planned output increase.
