UK Deportation & Removal Orders
In UK immigration law, the terms deportation and removal are often misused interchangeably. However, each carries a distinct legal meaning with far-reaching implications. Understanding the key differences between these two mechanisms is essential for any individual facing potential enforcement action from the Home Office. This comprehensive guide aims to demystify the legal frameworks governing…

There’s a concentration camp / industrial complex quickly developing to cash in on the $45 billion allocated toward new detention facilities.

Pertinent reminder: U.S. immigration judges are employees of the Department of Homeland Security and are therefore part of the executive not judicial branch.

The Isle In The Silver Sea
standalone fantasy romance
set in a fantasy version of Britain where folktales and myths from the past reincarnate over and over, and memory of the rest of the world is obscured
follows two women who are the latest incarnations of the knight and the witch, who are fated to fall in love and doom each other, though don’t fit the traditional molds of each role
neither particularly wants to give in to the tale - but when a strange assassin starts killing their kind, they inevitably have to work together, and will either have to give in or find a way to free themselves from their fate
arc from netgalley, out oct 21
#The Isle In The Silver Sea#sapphic books#aroaessidhe 2025 reads#oh my goddddddd#This book was so perfect and made for me.#I loved the atmosphere; all the elements of folktales and myth mashed together in an anachronistic setting that’s#medieval in some ways but more modern in others - perfect encapsulation of the themes of being stuck in the#trappings of the past and stifling other cultures.#It’s very blatantly exploring the modern issues of how being stuck in a rigid colonial anti-immigrant past and against#change and diversity is actively killing the people/country.#Maybe a little heavy handedly? But I personally don’t mind that#as far as being the wider plot to a romance.#I guess I can imagine if it weren’t romance focused it could have gotten a lot more complex and detailed in those discussions but…#(I’m a little concerned there so many reviews confused about the time period THAT’S THE POINT. KEY THEME OF THE BOOK.)#the entire point is that the cyclical narrative of myths and the isle is overtaking actual culture - both of immigrants#and other cultures on the isle (welsh for example)#the first half I was like yeah I enjoy this; it’s a little slow but I love the vibes; the second half - while I was initially unsure#absolutely pulled on my emotions in a way that had me fully invested. the way the switch up affected each MCs personal journey#& also their relationships with the other characters - that’s the thing that Got me.#the unexpected weird little family……the friendships….the cat…… thinking about them days later made made me cry again.#I’m generally not a fan of soulmatey or instant attraction kind of things but this is both the core of the story#and also the kind of characters/dynamic I like. I love both Simran and Vina individually#and the way their romance intertwined with each of their personal journeys really worked for me.#And the question of whether there’s a true connection there or whether they’re just giving in to fate -#as well as ‘what does it matter#lets enjoy ourselves in the moment’ - is explored in the narrative.#I loved the little snippets and notes at the start of each chapter too!#anyway I don't think it'll work for everyone but i liked it very much :)

The first potential law passed in the US will likely have imprisoned migrants working in agriculture/traditionally exploitative jobs for “slave wages” and inhumane hours. The private prison industrial complex will profit heavily from the Laken Riley Act.

What is so interesting and so refreshing about Superman is that it hinges on international conflict but it isn't a thinly veiled argument in favour of US interventionism. The US has already intervened, the US created the conflict.
Time and again people try to tell Superman "you cant intervene on behalf of the US like that" but Superman is insistent: he's not American. But he is human. He's is a man. He owes it to the rest of humanity to do what he can as a human. If the film argues anything, it's that we all owe it to our fellow humans to do what we can.

“Sorry, but you gotta unlearn hating criminals - and you gotta unlearn it quick. They are criminal-izing a bunch of people - they’re doing it to immigrants, they’re doing it to trans people, they’re dehumanizing disabled people, they’ve been criminalizing homeless people, they’ve been criminalizing black people - and really all non-white people. The reason they do this: they have a massive for-profit prison system. They make more money the more people they put in prison, because the 13th Amendment still allows for slavery if you’ve been convicted of a crime - and they’re just skipping due process at this point. So now they can make you a slave as long as they can convince people in the public that you’re a criminal.
Start unlearning your automatic reactions to people being called ‘criminals’. Start thinking about why you trust these authority figures in who they choose to punish, who they’re able to punish, who they most often punish with the brand of ‘criminality’. Is it really the people causing the most harm? I’d argue no. I’d argue it’s the people that they want to oppress the most while they cause the most harm - ‘they’ being the super-rich people who own the prisons, who own the military industrial complex, who own all of the housing stock because they had giant hedge-funds buy it up and drive up the housing prices and use a national price-fixing website —multiple national price-fixing websites— to up the rents on rental units.
They’re setting it up to kill and enslave as many people as they can. Don’t give them the tools or support to do it. Examine your beliefs.”

The words "criminals" and "illegals" are entirely defined by the government.
If you believe that "criminals" and "illegals" shouldn't have rights, then you believe that the government should decide who has rights, which is pretty much the definition of tyranny.
If you claim to be a supporter of "small government", your #1 priority must be protecting the rights of "criminals" and "illegals".

i was debating posting this but i’m planning on including this lore in a fic so . fuck it . here’s an explanation of my glinda ethnic minority headcanon featuring some completely made up worldbuilding i did for the hell of it
the in depth explanation is below the cut but if you’re lazy like me
TL;DR: glinda’s mother Larena Upland is “west gillikinese”, a Unionist practicing ethnic group belonging to the major colonial power in Gillikin. her father, Highmuster, is eastern gillikinese, an ethnic minority and married up into nobility and assimilated into Unionist/western gillikin culture and this gives glinda her Complex™️
OKAY. so . the history part of it. bare with me for any inconsistencies with book lore im not good with keeping track of that. Anyways! long before the Wizard came to Oz, Gillikin was mostly Lurlinist, especially concentrated near Mount Runcible due to its religious significance, but a lot of them were also concentrated in the East (think Lake Chorge and Great Gillikin Forest).
The Unionists were mostly concentrated in the Southwest, with the West Gillikinese being a distinct ethnic group. Over the course of time the West Gillikinese began to settle the East, vying for resources and also to spread Unionism, essentially cementing themselves as the colonial power in Gillikin
So fast forward to present Oz … in the West, you have the richer cities like Shiz, and you also have the dairy farm towns like Frottica. In my mind the Pertha Hills cities are inhabited by a lot of mixed and East Gillikinese immigrant families due to many coming over for work or for religious reasons. In the East, you have the mining towns like Traum that are closer to the Glikkus mines and aren’t really centers of commerce and industry like Shiz or the Pertha Hills.
Lake Chorge is a popular vacation spot for a lot of West Gillikinese families, but there’s a distinct divide between the settler vacationers and the people who’d actually been living there for generations. naturally there’s also a class divide
West Gillikese people are what the book tells us “Gillikinese” are like— blonde haired, blue eyed, typically rich
East Gillikinese people have red, curly hair, and shorter statures (my explanation for this is because they border Munchkinland and the Glikkus teehee)
because i’m bad with cardinal directions i decided to name west of Gillikin “New Gillikin” (since it is the center of industry and new developments) and the East “Old Gillikin” (since it. Isn’t . lol. also this ties in later with a line Glinda has in the book)
New Gillikin people are also referred to as
- just “Gillikin”
- Westsiders
Whereas Old Gillikin people are sometimes referred to as
- Eastsiders
- Madelines (from the mountain range)
SOOO… here’s where glinda comes into this. from what we know of glinda and her family from the books:
- she comes from Frottica, which is a bit more rural than the other Gillikin cities. Perhaps a dairy farm?
- She’s from “nobility” but only on her mother’s side (The Uplands). I think it’s implied her father had to marry up?
- She has this insatiable desire to perform and constantly overcompensates
so. in my crazy autism powered mind . Glinda’s father Highmuster, an Eastsider from Lake Chorge, met Larena, her mother, when her family was on vacation when she was very young. They fell in love, but the Uplands were notttt approving of the relationship at all and Larena ran away in her 20s to be with him. as a result her family cut her ass off and didn’t reconnect or allow her access to her family’s status (or their money) until years after and it kind of traumatized her for life and she passed so much of that down onto her daughter 😭😭😭
her dad, on the other hand, converted to Unionism and assimilated for the sake of his wife and his family, but he still yearns for his childhood and his own damn culture and kind of influences Glinda’s Eastsider side
Glinda grows up in rural Frottica— a city with Eastside influence and remnants of Gillikin culture, but her father’s internalized xenophobia and her mother’s For Real xenophobia makes her suppress that side of herself HARDDD. her culture reminds her of her childhood and reminds her of her dad but her mom gives her a really bad Complex about it
- her hair is naturally strawberry blonde and super curly but she dyes it bleach blonde to fit in
- she’s insecure about her height
but in ways glinda also kind of yearns for it? her name is Unionist but she’s insistent on people using the “proper Old Gillikinese pronunciation” for it in the book . in my hc this is a deliberate Eastside spelling of her name her dad fought for her to have
anyways i’m kind of really bad at explaining this nor am i really good at world building but the long and short of it is that glinda is “othered” in some way but has internalized beliefs and hatred towards herself and her heritage and feels the need to perform to maintain her privilege . which puts her at odds with Elphie and i think informs a lot of her… Choices later on in the story
ermmmm yeah that’s about it . if u have any questions or feedback feel free to ask

i really do want to discuss how clark is representative of being a dreamer, of minorities, the fight against social injustice, being an immigrant, parents who sacrificed it all for their child to succeed and live, being adopted into a family not representative of your culture ( in this case its clark being adopted by humans when hes an alien. in real life this would be most similiar to brown/black children being adopted into a white family... no offense, kents ) and the effects on assimilation on him wanting to to fit in as much as possible, and the pain said assimilation has done upon him as someone who will never truly fit in. hes quite literally a alien ...

a few days ago i got an anon asking about devin's ethnicity... just wanted to say i'm not ignoring the question (and also, the answer isn't going to be some kind of major plot spoiler). it DID, however, make me realize that 1) i need to write myself a proper worldbuilding bible, and 2) from there, i need to talk to my qpp about devin specifically for..... probably like. Several Hours.
so. there Will be an answer. but it'll be after i've done those rather time-intensive things 😭

Bautista is a bit funny for me as an international fan of GW because I had a homeroom teacher with the same name, I wonder how they'd do in that position LOL. I do appreciate their character 'cause I don't often see my country in media, or really any of SEA that much, this is the first time I've seen it represented in IF specifically.
hehe thanks!!!
Bautista as a homeroom teacher would be the long-suffering type that tries to remain stoic even when their students catapult pencils into the ceiling. Their students swing wildly between thinking they're a hardass and (for the most part unintentionally) the funniest person alive. They try and impart important life lessons onto their students, but just end up exasperatedly explaining that no, carving your eraser into a throwing star shape is not technically a weapon, but that does not mean you can throw it at each other. Now read this passage from this book about World War II and shut up.
