The thing that bugged me about season 2 was how isolated each character seemed. Caitlyn's rampage on the chem barons was all well and good, but gassed up a whole street and innocents are bound to get caught in the crossfire - and vi helping her would at least get the attention of the firelights and in extension, ekko.

I want him to fight with his older sister, because so far for 5+ years he did all the cleaning in the undercity and nobody (that we know of) gotten hurt. And what about the councilwomen's daughter preaching about 'breaking the cycle of violence' but so easily used chemical warfare? In this case the end definitely does NOT justify the means

So there were some things I had to cut out of my book on aro & ace -ness for various reasons. Mostly, I had to trim it so it'd fit into a lower price range, but sometimes... I had to sigh heavily and admit that something was just too self-indulgent and it had to go.

These included:

A study of some historical figures whom I think might have been ace or aro (not to 'claim' anyone as aspec - we have no idea how people from the past might identify today - but I think it's important for us to remember that historical figures should not be considered straight by default, and that their lives shouldn't be painted as tragic if they didn't have a partner.)

In particular I got very annoyed with adaptations of certain historical figures' lives that write in romances that never existed, as if their lives are uninteresting unless you shove romantic love in there

A couple of thousand words yelling about how groundbreaking Critical Role's ace and aro characters are (this one PAINED me to remove)

A rambling diversion into animals that breed cooperatively and how they disprove the dumbass narrative that 'the sex drive trumps everything so being ace is obviously ~unnatural~'

A bunch of other stuff where I had to look myself in the eye and say 'Sky. I know this is fun. But is this relevant. Is this necessary.' Alas it was not.

Anyway it makes me very sad that I couldn't include this stuff, and the upshot is: I'm starting a free Medium blog (EDIT: formerly on substack but moved for Reasons) so I have a place where I can yell about everything I couldn't fit in the book. I'll probably use it to yell about general aspec & pop culture things in general!

having seen at least the rough outlines of all the romances now I have to say that I think emmrich's is probably objectively the best in terms of coherence and completeness of story arc (with the understanding that ultimately the 'best' romance is whichever one makes YOUR heart sing anyway so objectivity is a silly thing to claim that way, it just felt like it's the arc with the most well-paced focused content and the least dangling threads)... but lucanis' is my favourite haha. just. the whole kneeling before your beloved full of reverence but without any of the distance that usually implies??? his complete undramatic certainty and calm in every scene with rook after this, having spent the whole game caught between fear and longing???? mr. lives in a pantry but it says nothing about my psyche don't worry about it it's purely for tactical reasons that I keep myself contained in a small dark room not entirely unlike a cell, love among the parsnips -- finally coming to rook in their room and it's so comfortable and comforting???? after all the times rook supports and comforts him through the game he's finally able to return the same to them when they need it while being so calm and steady and it's so fucking sweet and feels so effortless and with no price attached?????? he basically assigns himself the role of your bodyguard and he WILL stab a god over it??????????????? the turn to protector (which was in his heart all along longing to get out and find a place) of it all????? he sounds like he's found himself unexpectedly stumbling into such a soul-lightening state of revelatory existential relief, full on 'you only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves' mary oliver style, and he goes and he shares that with rook and protectively envelops them in it when they're hurting??????????????????????????? hello for the maker's sake hello can anyone hear me?????

I have had my favorite artist follow the same hyperfixations as me for like ten years and then suddenly get into something that I ABSOLUTELY HATED! And you know what I did? I kept supporting them when I could. That's it! If they change Fandoms, just let them, if they want to ship something you hate? Same thing.

I feel like I've seen an influx of TGD content lately that sorts Mel and Breadhead into some very stereotyping sibling dynamics, most especially where there's the one that their dad babies and loves (Mel) and the one that their dad doesn't give a fuck about (Breadhead). And just, NEED I REMIND PEOPLE that Breadhead is pretty canonically the favourite child, at least of their father. He's just a lot lower needs than his sister and so Ken spends a lot less time babying him.

And while Ken does a good job not utterly neglecting either of his kids, need I point out that he goes on in the pilot talking about how Breadhead is such a good kid and he's proud to have him, whereas Melancholy spends the whole pilot trying her damn best just to get him to say he's proud of her. If you're going to do those weird and unfitting prompts for the family, at least get it right, for fuck's sake.
