Dots Café, 3819 E Colorado Blvd., Pasadena, CA 91107

I don’t usually drive this far east on Colorado Blvd., so it took me a few months to spot Dots Café. It’s beautiful, feminine, and adorable though, so I knew I had to go as soon as I saw it. Dots Café is from the same owner as Dots Cupcakes. I love the ambiance, the food is tasty, and the place is wi-fi friendly. I think I’ll be camping here on a regular basis.
They have sandwiches, salads, soup, a kid’s menu, baked goods and cupcakes (full size, minis, doggie cupcakes). For coffee, they use local roaster, Jones. For tea, Bird Pick Tea is local as well.
* Bento box ($13.50): Comes w/ your choice of sandwich, side salad, pickle, and your choice of a mini cupcake. Cute! I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the tuna melt and side salad. The sandwich had thick slices of good bread, toasted and buttered nicely, thick slices of ripe tomato, 2 slices of jack cheese, and a very good albacore tuna salad with mayo, mustard seeds, and celery. It came with a nice side salad w/ a great mustard vinaigrette and a pickle.
* Hazelnut crunch cupcake was pretty good though the chocolate hazelnut made it heavy and sweet and the vanilla flavor could have been stronger. The vanilla cake was light and moist. The hazelnut filling was dense and rich. The vanilla buttercream was smooth and soft.
The free wi-fi worked well. The décor was so inviting. It feels like a place that I’d like to stay all day. It’s clean, spacious, bright and has all kinds of cute touches, including painted flowers on one wall, flowers at each table, copper/rose gold chairs and lamps. I half expected Martha Stewart to walk through the doors.
It’s cheaper to eat the bento box there than to take it to go (they charge for the bento box). Help yourself to water. Order at the counter and they’ll bring your food to you. Lunch is served from 11 AM – 6:30 PM.
4 out of 5 stars

Hit List: Top Things to do in Door County, Wisconsin

There are few places in the Midwest more delightful than Door County, in the upper peninsula of Wisconsin. With 300 miles of shoreline, you can watch a sunrise and a sunset over the water without leaving the county.
You can also stroll through acres of orchards, explore art galleries, devour cherry pie, sip on local wines and brews, splash in the lake or paddle along the bluffs, stroll through five state parks, visit 19 unique communities and tour 11 historic lighthouses. Here are my Top Picks of Things to Do in Door County!
Take a Boat Ride
You're at the lake — so you gotta get on the lake! Board a cruise along Lake Michigan or Green Bay, and you may even be able to see some of the shipwrecks from the boat (supposedly there are some 400 shipwrecks in these waters!). You can also take the Washington Island Ferry to Washington Island from the mainland, crossing "Death's Door" as you do so. The French bestowed that name on the treacherous waters that sent so many ships to the bottom. Other great ways to get on the water are to go sailing, rent kayaks or try your hand at stand-up paddleboarding. Then congratulate yourself on being part of the mere 1% of visitors to Door County who ever get off the mainland! The Door County Maritime Museum in Sturgeon Bay is the perfect place to learn about the history of the area lighthouses, shipbuilding, shipwrecks and more.

Take a Lighthouse Tour
There are 11 lighthouses in Door County, many of which were built in the 1800s, and a semi-annual festival celebrates their history (including tours to some that are rarely open to the public), held in the early summer and fall. The Chambers Island Lighthouse has the most interesting history, in my opinion, while the Cana Island Lighthouse is the most unique. You have to be ferried across the ankle deep water by tractor just to get to the lighthouse! Another worth visiting is the "Bird Cage" - the old Baileys Harbor Lighthouse, with 150-year-old range lights and a new boardwalk that's been built between them.
Enjoy Tastings at Local Wineries and Craft Breweries
There are 8 vineyards and wineries in Door County, and there's even a Wine Trail with maps, festivals and other events. My favorite is Door 44, where husband-and-wife team Steve Johnson and Maria Milano left their legal careers behind to realize their dream of winemaking. If you might be surprised, as I was, to think about wine growing that far north, Steve told me that the climate here between June and October is almost exactly what you find in Bordeaux, France. Harbor Ridge Winery is another enjoyable stop, also run by a husband and wife team.

Winery touring and tasting in Door County, WI Steve Johnson (on the bottom right of the pic above), co-owner of Door 44 with his wife Maria, says that the key to successful winemaking is just to let the grape be the grape. "If you let the grape just do what it wants to do, you'll have a good wine." There are also many local brews and craft master brewers around here, so it's easy to find tours and tastings, as well as great choices for local beers on the menus. And for something different - not wine and not beer - check out Island Orchard Cider. Here they make a variety of ciders from their own 40 acre orchard on Washington Island. My favorite was the pear....mmm, delicious!

Visit Artisan Cheesemakers
What goes with wine better than cheese? And the state is well-known for its dairy farms and cheeses, so you won't want to miss visiting some of the world's best cheesemakers. Wisconsin is home to every single licensed cheese master - 6- of them to be exact. At Wisconsin Cheese Masters, you can find an exclusive selection where many cheeses are not available anywhere else. Owner Jim Pionkoski has a personal favorite: Marieke Golden, made by Marieke Penterman, whom Jim calls the best cheese maker in the U.S. and maybe even the world. Originally from the Netherlands, Marieke mainly produces gouda cheeses. The Golden is her only non-gouda, and Jim eats it every single day. "It's the only cheese I never get tired of," he says.

Jim Pionkoski of Wisconsin Cheese Masters, sharing his love of cheese. Another don't-miss cheese stop is the Door Artisan Cheese Company, run by Wisconsin Master Cheesemaker Mike Brennenstuhl, who has been making cheese all his life. This "one stop shop" includes a beautiful market, extensive underground cheese caves where the magic happens, and an amazing restaurant, Glacier Ledge. You can take tours to learn how the cheeses are made and see the caves. Mike uses only local dairy farmers, and only buys milk for the process from farms that are certified AHA, meaning they are hormone free and humane.

Stuff Yourself at Incredible Restaurants, from Casual Dining to Chef-Driven Foodie Spots
As mentioned above, the Glacier Ledge restaurant is highly recommended; I had one of my best meals of the trip there. They serve an internationally-inspired tapas style menu that's perfect for tasting and sharing.

For an opposite end of the spectrum at a long-time Door County institution, seriously DO NOT miss Wilson's Restaurant & Ice Cream! This adorable diner and ice cream parlor has been around since 1906, and it's located in what I personally found the most picturesque and explorable town in Door County - Ephraim. A mini jukebox adorns every table, and the burgers are honestly to die for. But be sure to save room for one of their old-fashioned ice cream treats like shakes, floats and sundaes. And if you're a root beer fan like me, you will love their housemade root beer. Best root beer I've ever had in my life!

Wilson's Restaurant and Ice Cream Parlor in Ephraim, Wisconsin For breakfast or a coffee fix, my pick is Skipstone Coffee Roasters in Sister Bay, my second favorite Door County town. Their breakfast sandwiches are hearty, delicious and healthy; and they make all of their flavor syrups in house. It's pet-friendly, and if you're in a hurry for your next adventure they have a quick self-serve bar with a pay station. And no restaurant round-up of the Wisconsin peninsula would be complete without talking about Al's. Maybe you've heard of it or seen pics on Instagram, but Al Johnson's Swedish Restaurant is the place with the goats on the roof. Every morning, the goats are led up a ramp to the sod roof of the restaurant, where they graze all day. You can even adore them from the two webcam streams that are affixed up there. Al's has been an icon for nearly 60 years, and it really is an authentic Swedish restaurant. Now, I have to admit I didn't eat there, but from everything I've heard the food is good. I just went for the goats - oh, and I also picked up a few things in the very nice little boutique there. Check it out!

Experience a Traditional Wisconsin Fish Boil
OK, so technically this could go under the above "Eating out" section. But make no mistake - a fish boil is as Wisconsin as it gets, so much so that the experience definitely deserves its own category! There are numerous places that put on a fish boil, but I recommend Pelletier's. They serve a traditional fish boil every night of the week starting at 5 pm, along with a full menu of other items as well as lunch and breakfast service.

Pelletier's traditional Wisconsin fish boil Owner & Boil Master Matthew Peterson has been doing this for decades, learned from his father before him. The boil consists of freshly caught whitefish from Lake Michigan, cooked outside over the open fire along with corn and potatoes. The tradition comes from the Scandinavian settlers a century ago, and is very much alive and well in Door County. The drama of the "boil over" is pretty cool (advice: don't stand too close to the pot!).
Go Gallery Hopping
Door County is home to an impressive number of galleries and artist studios. It's a great place to discover everything from a small, emerging artists to high-end galleries and accomplished artists who have made a name for themselves. Some of the places I would recommend making a stop would be: Blue Dolphin House, set on four-and-a-half acres of beautiful perennial gardens, in a building that dates back to 1860. Run by Peg & John Lowry, they've been in business for more than 50 years.

Blue Dolphin House shop & studio Deanna Clayton Studios - you'll need to make an appointment or check her website for opening hours. Deanna is an incredibly successful glass artist, using a centuries-old technique called pate de verre. With it, she creates some astonishing sculptures, which have been purchased and commissioned by patrons including many Ritz Carlton hotels around the world.

Artist Deanna Clayton in front of her studio Fine Line Designs Gallery & Sculpture Garden features original paintings, custom wood furnishings, glass, jewelry, ceramics and fiber art more than 90 renowned artists. Stroll the two-acre sculpture garden that showcases sculptures in bronze, stone, metal, ceramic, copper, and stainless steel. Unique, collectible artworks and original gifts are found indoors and out.

Fine Line Designs Gallery If you want more information on the art scene, check out the Door County Visitors guide!
Pick Your Own Cherries
Door County is the cherry capital of the U.S., and you can experience cherry picking yourself at one of the County's pick-your-own cherry orchards. Many families make it a fun tradition every cherry season. Check out the listings of places you can do this, along with many other resources, at Wisconsin Cherry Growers.

This will be the event's fourth year at Avista Stadium, home of the Spokane Indians minor league baseball team. Friday night will be for 21 years and older, followed by the family friendly Saturday session which features a kids play area on the green grass in short right field. In addition to the 175 craft beer selections lined up along the outfield wall, there will be live music from the stage near second base and great food truck selections as well. Tickets are just $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Admission includes a commemorative tasting glass and your first six 5 oz. sample tastes. Additional tastes a only $2 each or three additional tastes for $5. Online tickets and complete event details at washingtonbeer.com. Here are the 41 Craft Breweries and their 175 unique and tasty selections for the weekend: 7 Seas Brewing Gig Harbor 1) Autumn Ale (6.5% ABV/27 IBU) Brewed for early-mid autumn consumption, Autumn Ale takes its inspiration from the venerable traditions of German Oktoberfest and Vienna Marzen style of beers. Employing a blend of German Munich and Vienna malts as a base, this beer displays brilliantly clear copper-orange hues evocative of the vibrant, rich, and deep colors that surface seemingly overnight on trees this time of year in the PNW. 2) Ballz Deep Double IPA (8.4% ABV/ 84 IBU) A mash tun packed with Pale Ale Malt, medium crystal malt, and cara-pils malt provide a firm, slightly sweet malt flavor while copious amounts of resiny Yakima Valley hops go berserk on bitterness, flavor and aroma. Truly a Big, Bold, and Balanced double IPA. Badass Backyard Brewing Spokane Valley 1) Daring Diva Raspberry Wheat (6% ABV) Neutral malt profile which allows the raspberry flavor to shine through. Sweet and autumnal with a fresh floral finish. This is definitely a Badass Backyard Brewing fan favorite, and tastes even better on a nice warm summer day. 2) No Alibi Coconut Brown (5% ABV) Is there anything more iconic of the lush tropics than the coconut? The delicious heart of the island treasure has a nutty, toffee flavor and aroma that send you straight to the beaches of Paradise. Kick back with a No Alibi Coconut Brown and savor the mahogany color and smooth, roasty malt taste. Before you know it, you'll feel like you're on a crescent beach, ringed with feathery palm trees swaying in a light ocean breeze and basking in the warm sun. 3) Mojo Coffee Stout (6% ABV) Our coffee stout is a classic combination of a traditional stout and premium signature blend coffee from a local roaster, Thomas Hammer. Roasted barley and coffee dominate the aroma, with the sweetness from the stout balancing the acidity of the coffee. 4) Harju Fresh Hop IPA (5.6% ABV) Locally grown hops from the Harju's backyard are the sole hop ingredient in this fall favorite. Medium crisp bitterness, smooth and full malt flavor, and aroma to knock your hop socks right off your feet! Enjoy! Bale Breaker Brewing Yakima 1) Bale Finder IPA: Founders Collaboration (6.5% ABV/60 IBU) An IPA featuring experimental hop HBC 522 brewed in collaboration with Founders Brewing. Part of the Harvest Collaboration Series. 2) Dormancy Breakfast Stout (6.8% ABV/50 IBU) Who says Bale Breaker only does hoppy? This year's batch of Dormancy Breakfast Stout incorporates even more oats with the malt, plus an intense coffee presence, thanks to over 1 lb/barrel of Coast Rican beans roasted by Yakima's Lincoln Avenue Coffee Co. As winter settles in to the Pacific Northwest and the hop fields surrounding our brewery lay dormant, this beer was crafted to remind us that good things can still happen in the off-season for hops. 3) Bottomcutter Imperial IPA (8.2% ABV/100 IBU) Double dry-hopped with homegrown Yakima hops, Bottomcutter IIPA may be light in color but is packed with citrus and pine hop character. This Imperial IPA is brewed to finish dry, perfect for the combination of Citra®, Simcoe®, and Ekuanot™ hops. As the bottomcutter is a tractor that leads the topcutter through the fields during harvest, this beer will lead to a new appreciation for our valley’s hops. Bellwether Brewing Spokane 1) Fernweh, Baltic Porter (6.9% ABV) Fernweh is a deep longing to be on an adventure, or simply to be somewhere other than where you currently are. As when Bilbo told Gandalf he so desperately wanted to see mountains again. Fernweh, the beer, starts of rich with a malt body of chocolate and caramel, then lingers into a clean roast that finished slightly dry with just a twinge of star anise. Gold Medal winner for best Baltic Porter at 2017 Washington Beer Awards! 2) Albion, Ancient Celtic Wild Sour (8.2% ABV) Albion is the oldest name on record for the island of Great Britain. This beer aims to reflect that legend. Being brewed with heather and no hops gives this beer little-to-no perceived bitterness with a burst of floral, almost lavender-mint, bouquet. Late additions of heather, that are wild-harvested and imported from Scotland, introduce microbes that sour the beer. Peated malt provides a bit of smoke that rounds out this complex ale of antiquity. 3) Extreme and Experimental Rotation This tap will rotate, so come by and see what we have on tap! How about a gruit ale that is the most bitter thing you've ever tasted? Challenge accepted? Perhaps an imperial dandelion sour? Something super hoppy? These and more to be found on rotation, so check in often! 4) Scots Bere Barley Rotation Have you ever wondered about ancient ingredients? Bellwether had exclusive first-time use of Scots Bere Barley, the nigh-exclusive grain used for brewing beer in ancient Alba, modern day Scotland. It has been adapted to life, a true landrace grain, in the American Northwest and grown by Palouse Heritage Farms. Try our different single malt beers made with Scots Bere Barley, ranging from lagers to a bochet braggot! These are some of the rarest beers in the country... possibly the first time this grain has ever been used in the US. Stop by the table and see what's pouring! Bennidito’s Brew Pub Spokane 1) IPA (7% ABV/65 IBU) Mosaic, Simco, Citra, and Columbus. Nuff Said! 2) Clock Tower Imperial IPA (9% ABV/80 IBU) Amarillo, Cascade, and Simcoe! Smooth and dangerous! 3) Whiskey Barrel Aged Brown Ale (6.8% ABV/15 IBU) Aged 5 months in a fresh Dry Fly Wheat Whiskey Barrel. 4) Mystery Beer Visit our booth to see what we have in surprise for you! Big Barn Brewing Mead 1) Big Barn Raspberry Braggot (10.5% ABV, 15 IBU) Here’s to making farm-style beer that impresses northwest beer connoisseurs as simultaneously unique and easy to drink. This brand-new release from Big Barn is a full-bodied honey beer with subtle raspberry notes. A malt-forward body harmonizes with the sweetness of farm fresh honey and finishes with lingering fruit notes from fresh-picked raspberries we grew here on the family farm. 2) Blackberry Porter (6.8% ABV/ 65 IBU) This porter does great justice to our brewery’s farming roots. Our farm-fresh blackberries make their appearance via the addition of our homemade blackberry syrup just at the end of the boil. A hint of blackberry on the nose is followed by a hearty porter body. As in most of our fruit beers, the blackberry undertones remain subtle yet just strong enough to make this an outstanding fall seasonal. 3) Golden Pumpkin Ale-ABV (6.3% ABV/ 13 IBU) Few pumpkin ales can offer what ours does here at Big Barn Brewing. Our home-grown, freshly-harvested sugar pumpkins are roasted with seeds and all until caramelized then steeped with a hearty grain bill to make this brew truly golden. The carefully balanced 2-row barley, roasted pumpkins, cinnamon, molasses, ginger, clove, and real vanilla pair to make this a superb fall seasonal micro-brew. 4) Fresh Hop Midnight Harvest Black IPA (6% ABV/80 IBU) Farm based brewing means we want "our farm" product in our beer! Our MIDNIGHT HARVEST celebrates that goal. As Spokane County's first "unofficial" commercial hop farm, we boast making a fresh hop ale with only hops harvested on our farm.... big C's celebrate the flavor of this IPA as we load it with Centennial, Cascade and Chinook hops. Black Label Brewing Spokane 1) The Tropical Thunder IPA (6% ABV/80 IBU) This beer has a deliciously light malt profile with a smack of tropical blends consisting of Sorachi Ace, Amarillo, and Citra Hops. 2) Rhubarb Cherry Sour (5.6% ABV/9 IBU) A mild sour with hints of locally grown Green Bluff Cherries and Rhubarb grown right in the brewer’s backyard. Nice and refreshing! 3) The S.M.O.G. Imperial Stout (11% ABV/59 IBU) Is our new amazing Imperial Oatmeal Stout done with a delicate blend of Carmel and Chocolate malts and finished with some maple syrup. This is hopped with Chinook and EKG hops moderately balancing off the sweetness from the malt. You don’t want to miss this one! 4) Coffee Cream Ale (5.3% ABV/16 IBU) This is a nice light and crisp Cream Ale with hints of Corn and Pilsen malt. We then blend in some locally roasted coffee into the beer to add a subtle additional layer of delicious coffee to the beer. This beer is a beautiful light and tasty treat. Blewett Brewing Leavenworth 1) Fresh Hop Double IPA (9.5% ABV/160 IBU) Hops: Simcoe, Ekuanot. Fresh hopped with Simcoe. 2) Pumpkin Ale (5.5% ABV/32 IBU) Hops: Styrian Golding, Tettnang 3) Crikside Citra IPA (6.5% ABV/80 IBU) Hops: Citra, Mosaic 4) BarnStorm Pale Ale (6% ABV/55 IBU) Hops: Simcoe, Northern Brewer Boundary Bay Brewery Bellingham 1) Fresh Hop Pale Boundary Bay’s Fresh Hop Pale Ale is brewed solely with Amarillo hops from Vigil Gamache Farms in Toppenish, WA. Delight your senses with heady floral, spicy, sweet peach, and citrus flavors of grapefruit, orange, and kumquat, as well as a slight and pleasant grassy flavor from the fresh hops. 2) Cedar Dust (6.5% ABV/66 IBU) Inspiration for Cedar Dust IPA hails from Bellingham’s iconic mountain bike trail on Galbraith Mountain. Brewed with four varieties of Washington-grown hops to encapsulate the spirit of the adventurous PNW. 3) Thirsty Ghost (6% ABV/25 IBU) The second beer in our new Cellarman Series, Thirsty Ghost is a hybrid style with elements inspired by Sake and Kolsch. Using a blend of three yeasts (two of them uncommon to beer brewering), our double-dragon team of brewer and cellarman transformed mere rice into this Pan-Pacific delight. A deep-golden straw appearance, aromas of pear, apple, and banana and mild earthy & coconut notes journey your tastebuds in an unknown frontier. Don't be haunted, drink this beer before it disappears. 4) Oktoberfest (5.7% ABV/35 IBU) The original Oktoberfest lager was created more than 200 years ago in Germany to celebrate a royal wedding. This recipe, brewed by Boundary Bay, is a delicious modern rendition utilizing 100% local malt from Skagit Valley. A generous amount of Munich malt blends the robust, medium-bodied lager with flavors of toasted pretzels, toffee and honey-caramel sweetness. MALTS: 100% Skagit Valley: Pale, Pilsner, Munich, Vienna, Acidulated, and Brew Malt. Diamond Knot Craft Brewing Mukilteo 1) Azacca IPA (6.5% ABV/45 IBU) Light bodied with aroma of pineapple and bright mango flavors settling in slowly, leaving a crisp almost honeydew finish. 2) Blonde Ale (4.2% ABV/13 IBU) Light yet flavorful with a bright, floral aroma and clean finish thanks to a complex malt bill and delicate use of noble hops. 3) Fog Bank Fall Ale (5.6% ABV/25 IBU) This Märzen inspired ale pours reddish amber with a complex malty body, toasty caramel notes, and crisp finish. 4) Industrial IPA (7.9% ABV/80 IBU) An imperial version of our original IPA, with double the hops! Malty, hop forward, yet balanced. Cascadia in a glass. Dirty Bucket Brewing Woodinville 1) BlackBerry Sour (5% ABV) Fresh Northwest BlackBerry Kettle Sour 2) Sicyne IPA (6.5% ABV/72 IBU) Northwest IPA, hop forward with a citrus nose and unusually dark, balanced malt profile 3) Not Yo' Honey Honey Cream Ale (5% ABV) American cream ale brewed with locally sourced honey. 4) Raspberry Lambic (5.5% ABV) Belgian fruit beer, made with fresh raspberries. Dru Bru Snoqualmie 1) Fresh Hop We got our hands on 100 lbs of freshly picked Centennial Hops from Virgil Gamache Farms. A modest malt backbone and loads of earthy, lemon, and floral flavors of the wet Centennial hops combine for this once-in-a-year experience. Enjoy this while it lasts. 2) Oktoberfest A light bodied, orange colored, session beer with soft, elegant German Malt flavors. Heaps of Vienna malt and German noble hops create a toasty, well balanced, and refined beer reminiscent of a German Style “fest” beer. Fremont Brewing Seattle 1) Lush India Pale Ale (7.0% ABV/80 IBU) We bring this tropical treat to you as a gift from the Pacific Northwest. Lush is brewed with a hand-selected blend of malts and lush, tropical hops reminiscent of lime, mango, and guava…Because Beer Matters! 2) Smoked Imperial Porter (9.5% ABV/ 50 IBU) Kinda like our Winter Seasonal, Bonfire, but bigger…and quite possibly, even better! 3) Field to Ferment- Centennial (6.0% ABV, 50 IBU) Brewing is the craft of blending science with artistry then introducing the mystical. Field to Ferment exemplifies this adventure. We brew this fresh hop ale throughout the entire hop harvest in Yakima highlighting different hop varieties as they are harvested. This batch highlights Centennial fresh hops, presenting notes of warm pine needles and fresh grass. 4) Field to Ferment- Amarillo (6.0% ABV/50 IBU) Brewing is the craft of blending science with artistry then introducing the mystical. For this most awesome event, we jazzed up Universale with berries, rosemary, and sage. 6) Brother Imperial IPA (8.5% ABV/ 1 billion IBU) This Brother is appropriately big, intimidating, and unbalanced with unrestrained quantities of hops for a head slap of beery ferociousness. 7) Helles Lager (5.1% ABV, 27 IBU) Clean, balanced, drinkable…need we say more? 8) Cowiche Fresh Hop Pale Ale (6.0% ABV/ 50 IBU) Cowiche Canyon Fresh Hop Ale is brewed from select organic hops grown in the Cowiche Canyon of the Yakima Valley which are harvested and placed into our kettle within 24 hours, creating a unique, once-a-year beer. 9) Ales for ALS Hazy IPA (7.2% ABV/35 IBU) Hazy, tropical, peppery, stone fruit, ginger…AND proceeds benefit ALS Therapy Development Institute, the world's first and largest nonprofit biotech focused 100 percent on ALS research. We lovingly refer to Irish Death as beer candy. While tempting to session this beer, the name is a necessary reminder that despite the surprising approachability, this beer weighs in at a hefty 7.8% ABV 2) Life Behind Bars (5.5% ABV/19 IBU) This retro-style beer is an ode to simpler times. Life Behind Bars has notes of crackers and dough with a subtle pinch of spicy and fruity hops. A Very Special Holiday Gift Guide From The Founders Of Sprudge
Our celebration of the holiday season continues here on Sprudge. First, we brought you our annual Sprudge Holiday Gift Guide, a curated selection of gift-giving ideas for the coffee lover in your life. Now we’re bringing you something a little more personal—a Founders Guide, created exclusively for Sprudge by co-founders Jordan Michelman and Zachary Carlsen. This guide reflects how we make coffee at home, and the products we’re really loving as coffee drinkers during the holidays. Happy slurping!
Hario Scale
The first item on my Christmas gift list is a simple Hario brewing scale. Coming in at just around $40 it’s a blush less expensive than the more advanced Acaia Pearl recommended in the Sprudge Holiday Gift Guide. It’s the perfect gift for someone in your life that wants to up their coffee game without diving too deep. It’s also just a simple, dependable piece of equipment. It turns on, it has a timer, and it weighs coffee/pour-over/my smoothie ingredients. — ZC
Baratza Encore
Another time-tested piece of equipment coming in at under $150 ($130 on Amazon last time I checked) for someone in your life that might still—gasp—grind their beans at the grocery store or use a—clutches pearls—blade grinder. The Baratza family of grinders range from the entry-level like the Encore to the pro-sumer level like the Baratza Forte W. We think the Encore is a great little grinder for those who maybe make a big pot in the morning and a little pick me up in the afternoon. —ZC
Kaffe Box subscription
Coffee subscriptions are nothing new, of course, and the market has gone through several phases: from fresh-faced new concept to same-y clutteredness to today’s stratified milieu, in which a couple of the best, most interesting services are able to rise to the top. Over in our Staff Guide, we recommended Yes Plz Weekly, a subscription service from Los Angeles that delivers a very accessible filter coffee and an alt-weekly style zine to your door each week. (I’ve written a couple of things for the zine.) This year I’ve also fallen deep in love with another subscription, this time from Europe, called Kaffe Box—a monthly rotating selection of roasters with a focus on Scandinavia.
Yes, the light roast Scandivanian coffee craze feels very Twenty-Teens, and yes, I agree, a lot of American roasters who tried to imitate it over the last decade wound up with a lot of undrinkable, ghastly product. But in the right hands, a lighter roast profile can, I assure you, yield a cup with expressive, fruity, tea-like notes, which isn’t what I want to drink every single time I have a coffee, but can be delightful from time to time when done well. This shouldn’t be a controversial opinion. Different styles of roasting are fine. Don’t yuck my yum.
Over the last year, I’ve got to try Kaffe Box offerings from some really interesting Nordic micro-roasters, whose stuff I cannot otherwise regularly enjoy here in America. Being able to drink through a bag of Jacu, or Langora, or Morgon Coffee Roasters is interesting and fun. Kaffe Box’s packaging always shows up clean and crisp; the bags are never damaged by the journey, and the coffee is always rippingly fresh, impressive for having been shipped from literally the other side of the world. This is my special treat coffee and I love it. JM
Fellow Stagg Gooseneck Copper Kettle
I use this kettle every morning and not a day goes by that I don’t admire it. Fellow released this in 2016 and since then have released different versions that have spouts better suited for tea, plug-in kinds for those that don’t wanna use their stovetop, and all manners of colors and finishes. But the shiny copper stovetop kettle is my favorite. Get it for around $100 on Amazon. ZC
Breville One-Touch Tea Maker
I’ve never met an automated tea brewer that I didn’t like. The Breville Smart Tea Maker has been a staple in my kitchen for over six years. You see, what I do is, I take big chunks of ginger, I cram it in the tea-hole, and then I set it to brew for ten minutes at a boil. By the time I’ve forgotten, I started this spicy tisane the dang thing is beeping at me telling me my perfectly steeped ginger brew is ready to glug. On days that I’m not gobbling root, I’m making delicate oolongs steeped at precisely one minute at just the right temperature. This is a tea toy for tea lovers and I’m living for it. ZC
White 2 Tea subscription
I love a good, weird subscription and I love good, weird tea. We talked a bunch about the Kunming, China-based brand White 2 Tea here on Sprudge during Tea Week 2019, and in the months since I’ve come to really appreciate the monthly delivery of White 2 Tea’s tea club offerings.
Each and every month is totally different: sometimes it’s an entire fresh (or “sheng”) pu ‘er tea cake ready to be drunk; other times it’ll be a handful of little oolong parcels, or 50 grams of nice green tea, or a little pressed brick of cooked (or “shou”) pu’erh to be picked at and enjoyed over the course of a month. Each month’s club comes with a little note written by the mysterious White 2 Tea brain trust, which includes info on the tea and recommended steeping instructions. The club feels fun and seasonal, and like I’m getting a really good value for my money (it’s $29.99 a month), and you can commune with fellow tea nerds on Instagram because trust me, they all follow White 2 Tea and will be sharing images of their club arrivals.
Tea is good, this we know. The White 2 Tea club is one of my favorite ways to enjoy it throughout the year. JM
KeepCups
The colorful reusables from KeepCup have been a perfect stocking stuffer for years and in 2019 they’ve introduced a whole new line of stainless steel cups. Available in six different colors and finishes, the stainless steel cups are sure to be a crowd-pleaser. For Star Wars fans in your galaxy, the folks at KeepCup have adorable R2D2, Chewbacca, Stormtrooper, and Darth Vader themed cups. ZC
Hype mugs
I spent a lot of time this year thinking about clothes, for reasons both work–related and personal, but along the way I’ve been surprised to see how much overlap there is with the world of coffee. Earlier this year we brought you a story about coffee and sneakers, but it turns out there’s a whole world of coffee + contemporary streetwear fashion collaboration, most especially in the realm of promotional mugs. Brands like Supreme, Patta, A Bathing Ape, Kith, Palace, Only NY, Aimé Leon Dore, Human Made, Stussy, and many more are producing fashion-forward, eye-catching mugs that look great both at home or in a nice cafe. It seems like pretty much every good brand has a mug, or has done one in the past; a lot of times these are in-store-only pick-ups, which rewards checking out physical retail locations wherever you might be.
If your favorite local cafe is run by sneakerheads, or someone on your list has recently used the term “drop” as a clothing-related transitive verb in casual conversation, these mugs make a truly delightful holiday gift. — JM
A Meaningful Donation
There are so many great charities worth donating to this year. One in particular we’re fond of is @getchusomegear, a Durham, NC based organization whose mission is “hookin’ up marginalized baristas w/free coffee stuff.” The org, created by Chris McAuley, works with baristas just getting started in the industry or looking for a leg up to access equipment and information. Both companies and individual donors are welcome to contribute to the project—you can reach out by emailing [email protected] and get involved this holiday season. JM + ZC

Barista Bards: A Dungeons & Dragons League For The Indianapolis Coffee Community
Dusk settles onto the city and the light starts to fade. Several baristas slip one by one past a “Closed” sign and into Commissary Barber and Barista, arranging themselves at a corner table. Soon the surface of the table is littered with books, pens, paper, coffee cups, and dice.
“Everybody ready?”
“Let’s do it.”
“We let off on the deck of the Whistlepig, having just booked passage to begin the quest to find Mr. Thistlebelle’s lost wife, can I get a constitution check?”
The baristas reach for their dice and each roll one D20.
“Natural twenty+two.”
“I got a five+seven.”
“Ha!” “Seventeen+three!”
***
Indianapolis, Indiana is a coffee community with many events. But there is nothing quite like the monthly meeting of baristas who play Dungeons and Dragons (D&D), a fantasy tabletop role-playing game that has been around since the ‘70s and is experiencing a recent upsurge in popularity around the country.
This group meets the third Monday of the month, either at coffee shops, or members’ houses. Known as Barista Bards, the group features a cast of four main characters and a rotating cast of guests.
The Dungeon Master takes a sip of her cappuccino and clears her throat:
“Alright, after dinner and a short rest, Taltos, you find yourself suddenly awake in the middle of the night.” She slowly looks around, pointing at one of the players.
“All around you is eerie quiet, none of the usual sounds of busy ship’s crew, and as you look out the window you notice a thick, viscous fog surrounding the boat.”
“What do you want to do?”
Taltos, a rogue wood elf with red hair and copper skin springs out of bed and nudges his companion, Thurk (pronounced hurk, silent T) a dwarf barbarian.
“Let’s go.”
Thurk rolls over—a difficulty, since he is as thick as he is tall—grunts, and goes back to sleep. Taltos gives up on the idea of getting Thurk out of bed and stealthily sneaks up onto deck, looking around apprehensively.
“All you see is the fog surrounding the ship, all you hear are waves lapping against the sides of the ship, UNTIL you see a crumpled shape near the wheel, do you want to go closer?”
Taltos tiptoes up to the figure, coming closer, he realizes that the skin is disfigured, the entire left side scalded beyond recognition. Taltos turns and runs to his employer’s cabin:
“Thistles, Thistles!”
“I need you!”
A rotund gnome wearing a nightdress and slippers clears his throat.
“Ahem” blinks slowly and says condescendingly.
“The name is THISTLEBELLE.”
Everyone around the table laughs, startling the barista at the counter counting money. The game breaks so the manager can check her close; this was, until only a few moments ago, a working specialty coffee bar. He gives her a thumbs up and heads back to the table.
“Thistlebelle snaps his fingers and his familiar, an orange fox, jumps on Thurk, sniffing, pawing, and poking his wet nose everywhere until Thurk wakes with a start ‘Garrrumph.’”
“No time for any of that,” Thistlebelle barks. “Let’s go!”
***
Much has been written about the cafe’s capacity for community building; it is a concept as old as the cafe itself. But the social component of a life spent in cafes burns no less brightly for those who make it their chosen career path. In Indianapolis, the strength of the coffee industry’s community has long been in League of Lattes, a monthly latte art throwdown series. But as the specialty coffee culture here has evolved, so have the ways in which coffee professionals connect to each other. The Indianapolis barista D&D group began last year with two baristas at Bee Coffee Roasters discussing past campaigns on a morning bar shift. As word spread, baristas from several shops expressed interest. There are now three separate campaigns combining baristas from smaller shops such as Bee Coffee and Commissary, alongside powerhouse shops like The Well and Provider (nominated for a Best New Cafe Sprudgie Award in 2018)
There are reasons so many coffee professionals are interested in D&D. Coffee culture often parallels nerd culture, with both communities built around unironic enthusiasm and pursuit of passion in niche interests. Specialty coffee as an industry is, in part, an exploration of the impact we can make through coffee in our world, reached through an emphasis on methodology and social interaction. While D&D is an exploration of fantasy worlds, players find success the same way, via social interaction and tactical methodology.
Both cultures reward geekery. Both cultures are increasingly inclusive. A female-identifying Dungeon Master—like a female-identifying roaster, cafe owner, or barista champion—used to be something unusual. Now it’s just part of the fun.
After grabbing a round of beers, the baristas turn back to the business at hand.
“Alright, you’ve woken up Thurk and Mr. Thistlebelle and the three of you are standing on the deck when you realize there is a disturbance in the air around you, a green glow illuminates the outlines of a vague shape.” The DM pulls out several miniatures and arranges them on the deck of a ship drawn on tracing paper.
“Roll initiative.” (Initiative determines the order of turns during combat.)
Several dice clack their way across the table top.
“Thistlebelle, you’re up first.”
“You see an arm-like shape detach itself from the smoke monster in front of you, as it swipes the air, you duck, but it catches the edge of your shoulder, tearing the fabric of your coat and raising welts.”
“I want to cast Tasha’s Hideous Laughter.”
Thistlebelle turns to the creature with a wry smile on his face “How do you punish coffee?” He pauses. “You ground it!”
The entire table breaks into laughter and groans.
“Well, I am a coffee merchant.”
The DM rolls a wisdom save for the creature. “It’s a seven, they fall prone on the deck of the ship.”
Thurk: “Well at least that joke was good for something.”
Taltos and Thurk take their turns and one by one the rest of the miniatures disappear off the ship as they handily kill them off.
“Congratulations guys, you’ve won your first battle of the adventure.”
The baristas stretch, looking around the empty shop. Books, pens, and maps disappear into backpacks. Coffee cups clatter as the table is cleared.
“Same time next month?”
“Yep.”
One by one the baristas put their coats on and slip out the door into the night, leaving the shop silent and dark.

Looking Back At The US Coffee Championships Denver Qualifying Event
And just like that, half the field is set for the 2019 US Coffee Championships taking place in Kansas City, Missouri next year in March. A total of 192 coffee professionals from around the United States gathered together in Denver, Colorado for the chance to move on to the National stage of coffee competition. Over the course of two days, these nearly 200 competitors took part one of (and sometimes more) the five events going on throughout the weekend: the Barista Championship, Brewers Cup, Cup Tasters, Roasters Championship, and for the first time in the US, the Coffee in Good Spirits. Now there are just 62.
If there are any large-scale takeaways from this weekend, it would be that, (1) there are a ton of new faces in every competition, and (2) those who have done well in past competitions continue to do well. While the prevalence of newcomers was felt throughout every competition stage—we’re guesstimating around half of the competitors were first timers—the veterans, unsurprisingly, owned the day. Every competition save for Cup Tasters was won, if not completely swept, by former finalists from the national level. Even Coffee in Good Spirits, which is only in its first year, was won by Sam Schroeder, who has previously made the finals of the Barista Championship (multiple times) and Brewers Cup.
Those moving on must now wait another month to learn who will comprise the other half of the field coming out of the second Qualifying Event, taking place mid-January in Nashville. But until then, let’s take a look back at the road that got these 62 competitors to KC, the weekend that was the 2019 US Coffee Championships Qualifying Event in Denver, Colorado.
SprudgeLive’s coverage of the 2019 US Coffee Champs is made possible by Joe Glo and Mahlkönig. All of SprudgeLive’s 2019 competition coverage is made possible by Acaia, Baratza, Faema, Cafe Imports, and Wilbur Curtis.
Barista Championship
For the Qualifying Event, competitors were given 10 minutes to serve the judges an espresso course as well as a signature beverage course; the milk beverage course, along with an additional five minutes of performance time, won’t be introduced until Kansas City. But even only having to serve two courses, the 10 minute run time proved to not be enough for many competitors; multiple baristas finished north of 11 minutes, some pushing into the 12-minute mark. This wasn’t just first-timers mind you. There were multiple veteran competitors who, while didn’t get the full DQ, had us sweating as precious point deductions continued to tick by.
Andrea Allen (Photo by Liz Chai)
From the field of 60 competitors, two truths crystalized this weekend. First, Andrea Allen remains a favorite. With three consecutive Finals appearances and another strong showing here in Denver, it’s hard to imagine she won’t make it four in a row. And two, Sam Neely is the real deal. If there was any worry that last year’s final appearance was a fluke or that they would suffer a sophomore slump, Neely’s significant 18-point win over Allen put that all to bed. Neely stands poised as the heir-apparent to be the barista that brings home a title for the new generation of competitors.

More so than any other competition, including the Barista Championship, the Brewers Cup is where previous Finalists loomed largest, taking the top three spots as well as ninth with Blair Smith (and let’s be honest, Smith is one of the most seasoned Brewers Cup competitors in the field, so I wouldn’t bet on her finishing below ninth on the national stage).
Jacob White (Photo by Elizabeth Chai)
At the same time, the Brewers Cup was the only competition last year where a newcomer won it all. It just goes to show that it is anyone’s game, but expect to see White, Gann, McCormick-Goodhart, and Smith near the top. Maybe this is the year on of them finally breaks through.

Coffee in Good Spirits has been a staple of the World Coffee Events competition roster since 2011, but somehow, it wasn’t until the 2019 season that the United States decided to get involved, with the first appearance of the event on US soil taking place over the weekend.
CIGS in America still feels a bit like it is in the beta testing phases; only a total of six competitors decided to give it a go in Denver, but this is surely poised to change. America has some of the best cocktail bars in the entire world as well as an already established mixology competition scene; combine in the fact that many baristas have made the switch from coffee bar to bar-bar and you’ve got a recipe for strong future performances. It’s only a matter of time.

It doesn’t matter where you are in the building, whenever competitors start raising those cups looking for red dots, you can hear the roars of the crowd. With the immediacy of the scoring—is there a dot or isn’t there—Cup Tasters makes for some of the most exciting spectating in all of coffee competition.
In Denver, speed was the name of the game. With Sebastian Legner going a perfect six for six and another 10 competitors only missing one, that left only four spots for the 19 competitors that correctly identified four of six cups. Only two seconds separated Jie Jiang and ReAnimator‘s Cody McGregor, 2:25 to 2:27, but that was the difference between booking a ticket to KC and a ticket back home.

Roasters Championship
For the first time in competition history, the US Roasters Championship has a qualifying round. No more sign-up and show up, not that it made much of a difference for Andrew Oberholzer, last year’s sixth place finisher and the winner of the Denver Qualifiers.
One of the great features of the Roasters Championship is how it reduces the barrier between competitor and spectator. Unlike any other event, where those in attendance can maybe sometimes get to try a competitor’s coffee or sig bev, for Roasters, spectators not only get to taste the coffees but have a hand in deciding the outcome by voting on their favorite.
If there was a single feet at the Denver Qualifying Event that could be considered as the most remarkable, it comes from Roasters (and Cup Tasters) with Jen Apodaca making the podium in both events. If she can repeat this performance in Kansas City, it will undoubtedly be one of the best US Coffee Championship appearances in the history of the competition.

Hearts Light Coffee (Tokyo, Japan) – Coffee Shop Review
One of the last places we visited on our honeymoon in Japan last year was Hearts Light Coffee, a micro-roaster tucked away on a side street in the Shinsen neighborhood of Tokyo.
Hearts Light was definitely the most photogenic coffee shop we visited in Japan, and the excellent service from Junior (one of the co-owners, and our barista) made the experience even more memorable.
Let's take a closer look at Hearts Light Coffee.
About Hearts Light Coffee
The little bit of information we have about Hearts Light Coffee came from our conversations with Junior, one of the owners of the small café and micro-roaster.
His English limited, and our Japanese even more so (who am I kidding? we don't speak a lick of Japanese), we learned that Hearts Light is owned by Junior and a few other friends.
Just like the other micro-roasters, we visited in Japan, the space is small.
There's a little bridge from the street to the café's entrance, which seems appropriate given the spectacle that you are presented with upon passing through the front door.
A beautiful Kuban copper coffee roaster is the shop's centerpiece, where it sits behind the coffee bar for customers to marvel at.
To the left of the entrance is a bookshelf full of vinyls and built-in woofers, giving hipsters and audiophiles alike, something to drool over.
And then, to top off all of the aesthetic wonders, there are several custom-made mechanical pour-over stands that rotate the drip coffee filters so that the barista does not have to pour in circular motions.
Where is Hearts Light Coffee Located?
Hearts Light Coffee is located on a quiet street in the Shinsen neighborhood, not too far from the infamous Shibuya crossing.
The Coffee
The coffee we had at Hearts Light was good, though not as memorable as some of the other stops we made on our Japanese specialty coffee tour.
I ordered an espresso, which was served in a glass cup that was way too big for the tiny little shot.
Espresso snobs probably cringe at the thought of this. And yes, like pretty much every espresso I ordered in Japan, it was nothing to write home about.
V was wise to order a pour-over, which was much more memorable. The device that Junior used to brew the coffee was especially intriguing.
Well, it was a Hario V60, but the V60 was actually placed on a rotating mechanism to ensure that the Barista, Junior, did not have to pour the water in circular motions.
To me, this felt more like a spectacle than coffee science, but it was still the first time I had ever seen anything like it.
Junior told us it was created by one of his colleagues.
The Space
Like most of the Japanese coffee shops we visited, Hearts Light is a very small space.
There were a few stools by a counter facing the street, as well as one small table (if my memory serves me correctly). Ultimately though, this was not the kind of café where you would expect to find a seat.
It's best to head into the experience with the expectation that you may need to take your coffee to-go.
Still, we were fortunate enough to be some of the only customers at the time of our visit, leaving us the opportunity to sit, chat, and take plenty of pictures.
The Service
Junior, the barista and co-owner who served us, was a delight to be around.
He was warm and welcoming, and we geeked out over coffee gadgets despite the language barrier. He even had a Kruve on-hand!
For us, service ended up being the difference-maker in many of the coffee shops we visited in Japan, and Hearts Light was definitely a perfect example of how great service is sometimes more important than the product itself.
Summary
Although Hearts Light Coffee didn't serve us the best coffee we had in Japan, it was definitely one of the shops with the best service. The aesthetics of the shop made our visit even more enjoyable.
If you plan to take on the Shibuya Crossing during your time in Tokyo, make sure you stop by Hearts Light for coffee. I think you'll love it!
Been to Hearts Light Coffee? Tell us what you thought!

Inland Northwest Craft Beer Festival at Avista Stadium
Press Release
The Inland NW Craft Beer Festival, produced by the Washington Beer Commission, is proud to announce the beer list for this 8th annual craft beer tasting taking place on Friday, September 22nd, 4pm to 9pm, and Saturday, September 23rd, from noon to 7pm. Field to Ferment exemplifies this adventure. We brew this fresh hop ale throughout the entire hop harvest in Yakima highlighting different hop varieties as they are harvested. This batch highlights Amarillo fresh hops, presenting notes of orange and fresh pine. 5) Universale infused with Berries, Rosemary, & Sage Pale Ale (5.6% ABV, 35 IBU) Universale Pale Ale offers a distinctive Northwest twist on the classic pale ale, using a select blend of Northwest Pale Roasted malt and Old-World malts balanced with classic Northwest hops to achieve a heavenly beer of rich malt flavor and subtle hop spice.
