Fog Walk

Decided to escape the house last night and take my friend up on her offer for fog-time adventure. 

Overall: creepy as hell.

The drive over there was...interesting, as it was hard to see the road/verge/turnings, so that meant creeping along when we knew the turning was coming up somewhere and nearly meeting hedge about three times. It was easier when we had a car in front of us, but even that spun my head out a lot as I kept trying to make sense of the breaklights. My eyes were pretty sure they were the reflective bollards you get on sharp turns, but they never got closer, so it really felt like we were moving in place. We did make it there safely though, which I'm still surprised about.

Walking down the beach was eerie enough while we could still see the lights from the beachfront pub, when those faded away it was beyond compare. It didn't feel like we were moving, pitch dark and foggy are an interesting combination, it was oddly claustrophobic (like being in a small, dark room) as the only sounds were our breathing and the ocean in the distance. It was nearing low tide, so the sea was way out, but for most of the walk it sounded right next to us. 

Up ahead there was just a slightly whiter line against the fog, which must have been the sea, but because it was dark and pretty fucking misty, I could tell if it was the surf breaking, a tall wave a bit further away, a tall wave nearby or a small wave. Or even just where the water tapers out. We crept forward bit by bit, not being able to see how rough the water was I didn't want to get taken out by a rogue wave and dragged out, the sound was almost deafening, like an actual physical weight. the only way i can think to describe it is like having a thick, opaque scarf made of sound wrapped around your head. You can still kind of see through it, but you know your head is closely confined and you just cannot escape the sound.

Creeping forward, the line started moving, we eventually figured out it was water rushing towards us, so pelted it back up the beach. It moves damn fast >> But no water-boots here! We paralleled the eater for a little way, but didn't want to push it and started heading back up the beach. All I could imagine was a huge shape looming out of the gloom, or lots of little shapes I guess. Where dogs had been on the beach before, there were some skid type tracks, but they just made it look like someone/thing had been dragged backwards into the mist. The other thought that struck me was 'what if we just keep walking, but never see the lights again, and the mist never lifts. We're just here forever...Maybe we died on the way and this is our form of purgatory'

My friend was not so pleased with my out-loud musings... But despite my fears we did hit humanity again and had a nice glass of wine after. Win win I suppose.

this is only a bit rambly because I wanted to get it down while I remember, definitely want to re-write properly at some point, but my head is very sieve-like right now and I don't want to forget bits. Also my shift key is a bit fucked so there's a lot of missing capital letters. Which Irks me. I don't want to go back over it though, so....
