Cygnus X-1,

Cygnus X-1 is located near large active regions of star formation in the Milky Way, as seen in this image that spans some 700 light years across.

An artist's illustration on the right depicts what astronomers think is happening within the Cygnus X-1 system. Cygnus X-1 is a so-called stellar-mass black hole, a class of black holes that comes from the collapse of a massive star.

New studies with data from Chandra and several other telescopes have determined the black hole's spin, mass, and distance with unprecedented accuracy.

Sorry for asking a bit dark topic but.. how does a star's death work here?

Howdy! Figured I'd answer related asks here, too.

I don't have some new art to illustrate it yet, but I'll explain the best I can!

In a nutshell, they have a dying phase. Depending on their mass, they become red giants or red supergiants.

Here's the Sun in his dying phase (concept art I drew in the past; it may or may not change in the future)

In their dying phase, I imagined they were prisoners of their own bodies. For example, Sun can't control himself at all. He can only watch as his body goes into a flying rage, doing everything it can to survive; even going as far as killing the ones he swore to protect.

When I first designed him, I had this in mind; it's why I didn't make him out to be "sunny" or jolly. The responsibilities of holding a star system on his own + being hyper aware of his own fate + past trauma weigh him down, but he does try his best to enjoy the life he has with the people he loves.

Mercury hanging out with Sun to help him feel more relaxed. Both he and Sun know their fates well. He's been coming to terms with it better than Sun, and he's helping Sun accept this as well. It doesn't mean he's not scared, though.

Once they've exhausted everything, ultimately their body gives out. From their death arises a chance for other stars to be born; it doesn't directly give life to new stars, but they release materials that could potentially help baby stars form.

They regain consciousness and become a white dwarf or even a black hole; once again, depending on their mass.

They have little to no memories of their past lives, even if they can be talked to. Most see this as death, others see this as a newer, humbler life. The former is especially true for the people they have left in their past lives as stars.

Sirius A is a jolly soul, but he always has lamented that his partner Sirius B had died ahead of him. He's always seen him as some sort of mentor in the past, and now he's since stepped up to the throne of being the Wolf Prince in place of B.

Now regarding memories: I did say they had little to no memories. Most dead stars report not remembering anything in their past lives at all; but some do, just that they're too hazy or surreal to make sense. They're about as clear as surreal dreams that Earthlings have.

Black holes are mysterious. They are huge concentrations of matter packed into very tiny spaces.

A black hole is so dense that gravity just beneath its surface, the event horizon, is strong enough that nothing - not even light - can escape.

Black holes can be stellar or supermassive.
