while reading superman comics i ran into this panel of batman with a lead-lined cowl, and it got me thinking.

the comic this is from (adventures of superman #440) has a cover date of may 1988. dr. clair cameron patterson first published findings about the prevalence of lead in gasoline and other parts of common postindustrial life being harmful in 1965, but we only saw legislation passed about leaded gasoline in 1975 (as per wikipedia:)
Starting with the 1975 model year, the United States mandated the use of unleaded gasoline to protect catalytic converters in all new cars.[18] However, Patterson's efforts achieved an accelerated phaseout of lead from all standard automotive gasoline—but not all leaded fuels—in the United States by 1986. By the late 1990s lead levels in the blood of Americans were reported to have dropped by up to 80%.[19] In 1978, Patterson was appointed to a National Research Council panel that acknowledged many of the increases of lead contamination and the need for reductions, but some members argued for more research before recommending action.[20] Patterson expressed his opinions in a 78-page minority report, which argued that control measures in certain sensitive sectors—including all leaded fuels, public water distribution systems, food containers, paints and glazes—should start immediately.[21]
so they definitely would have known lead is a health hazard while making this.. but probably not when it was established that lead everything confounded superman's senses back in precrisis (i assume), so maybe that's a holdover? and also it's very likely that dc just has never thought that hard about these things, simply because lead had been established as the Superman Blocker™ for so long. there is a LOT of lead in these early postcrisis superman comics. the metal men have a Lead Guy, the joker has a bunch of convienent lead coffins to stuff people into, lexcorp everything is lead-lined, buildings in metropolis have lead in them...
which definitely all tracks with like older us city infrastructure Built With Lead In It (and with lex luthor being the way that he is), but still . im actually so curious about the concept of an attitude shift wrt lead infrastructure and lead batcowls, etc., as it relates to increased public health awareness re: lead poisoning. it may be anecdotal, but i feel like in late 90s to 2000s comics, mentions of lead in infrastructure (or costuming) weren't so prevalent? i'll have to pay closer attention as i reread triangle era onwards, i think.

Are solar power systems prone to cyberattacks?

Europe’s move away from an energy system dependent on a few high-impact targets to a more decentralised system offers clear energy security benefits, the report states. Ukraine has learnt this in a particularly brutal way, following repeated cyberattacks on its power grid by Russia.
But to realise these benefits, cybersecurity laws, which focus on old, centralised infrastructure, need to be updated, the experts say. New legislation must address the specific security needs of distributed energy sources, like smaller rooftop solar installations.
Though on a much smaller scale than the strikes on other parts of the energy sector, the solar sector has faced attacks and interference, too.
In 2023, a group of Romanian solar customers modified mandatory inverter settings - which convert DC electricity generated by panels into the AC electricity used by homes - to disable the voltage-active power function. 
This function is required by the grid operators to reduce active power at high grid voltage, in order to keep the power system running efficiently and safely. 
Modifying this grid support function enabled the customers to make more money by not limiting their solar systems during high-voltage events, potentially jeopardising grid integrity as a result.
In a more pernicious incident, pro-Russian hacktivist group Just Evil stole credentials for 22 client sites in Lithuania and posted them on the Dark Web last year. This opened up access to the management portal of these solar sites, although access was not used to carry out further attacks on that occasion. 
Analysing risk, the report found that these large utility-scale solar installations are more secure, since they are often managed by experienced utilities and covered by the EU’s Network and Information Security (NIS2) Directive.
Small-scale solar systems, meanwhile, which are often rooftop installations on people’s homes or businesses, lack strict cyber rules. They are connected to the clouds of manufacturers, installers, or service providers. 
And while the impact of compromising a single installation is low, when grouped together for power system efficiency, they become virtual power plants of significant scale.

The sale to a new owner was reported recently, in late November 2024, but so-far she is still listed as stored.

Boeing accelerated the delivery of 1,000 smart bombs to Israel as the country intensifies retaliation against Hamas after the devastating weekend attack that killed hundreds of people, industry and defense officials said.
The 250-pound small diameter bombs, part of a 2021 contract, were transported from a U.S. Air Force base by Israeli Air Force transport, according to an industry official who asked not to be identified when discussing the agreements.
A senior defense official who spoke to reporters on Monday said that the ammunition sent in a hurry to Israel was not part of a “foreign military sale” between governments, but rather part of a “direct commercial sale” between the contractor and Israel that was already underway.
A second defense officer said on Tuesday that the first officer was referring to accelerated transactions as part of a May 2021 direct commercial sale between Boeing and Israel, which the State Department estimated at $735 million over several years. It also includes kits to convert unguided bombs into GPS-guided Joint Direct Attack Ammunition. No JDAM kit has been sent yet, said one employee.

The weapons, which can be launched by Israeli jets more than 64 kilometers away - each aimed at specific targets - "provide the means to accurately target terrorists in Gaza, while minimizing civilian casualties," said Brad Bowman, a military analyst at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, which monitors military issues in the Middle East. He said this is an important capability, considering that Hamas holds Israeli hostages.
The May 2021 sale was controversial when Congress was notified by the Biden administration. Senator Bernie Sanders and some members of the House acted to block the proposal to sell in protest against the Israeli attacks in Gaza at the time, but the proposal was not voted on, according to the Congressional Investigation Service.

Separately, the Biden administration is expected to announce new arms supplies to Israel, which receives more than $3 billion in U.S. military aid every year.

Each smear usually carried its own distinct vignette: a flavour of the person to whom it had belonged, a brief summary of their essence, like a cutting from tree. With that came the spice of fear, danger, the adrenaline of those who'd seen their end coming. This was different, or at least more. The blood held an entire catalogue of deaths; an address book to their final destination. It was murder in liquid form.
"I need air," she said. "Is it okay if I step outside for a moment?"
"Sure - no problem." Humans could be weird around her, but they were usually accommodating enough. "Do you need me to... formally invite you outside?"
"I'm good."
It was a clear night, and Raluca was grateful for the cool, fresh air. The evening shift was good for that: she often needed a breather after she worked, to cleanse her palette from the stain of blood, and a moment in the cold and dark helped her to re-centre herself. The department were good about that. The humans who worked nights were mostly open-minded, and grateful for the insights she could usually provide.
They'd created this role for her. Raluca was the only vampire on the force, as far as she knew, and her colleagues valued her particular expertise. She wasn't the first of her kind to get a normal job, for a given value of normal, but most had a level of wealth and education that took them beyond law enforcement: the larger castles were converted to hotels, and those without invested their hoard in bars, clubs, or other businesses. They had to adjust to the modern world, but they chose to remain in the shadows.
Raluca was different. She had always been a pathologist at heart, even growing up, all of those centuries ago - perhaps just waiting for the advent of forensics, or of modern employment at all. It was easier to get a job in today's market, now that the options had expanded beyond 'baron' and 'serf'. This was her vocation, and she was good at it. Not just the tasting, which came with her nature, but the work. Writing it up. Reporting to her bosses. Liaising with stakeholders. That didn't come naturally to a vampire at all, but she'd taken to it and thrived.
The tasting itself was a matter of control. One drop of blood set all of her synapses ablaze, like peering through a pinhole at the sun. It gave her a glimpse of that person's life from the inside, like the view from a wound: its jagged edges distorted, its slick surface shimmering like a hazy summer sky. In one second, she could taste the entirety of their being, read the contents of their soul... and it took everything she had to tear herself away.
All vampires had an affinity to blood, a weakness that they had to learn to fight. The experience was as addictive as it was potent, and it could easily become a compulsion - it was more deadly than any opiate, worse than any artificial high, because the hallucinations that it gave her were real. It was difficult to shake the sense of wearing someone else's skin. Raluca had to find the strength to look away, like learning how to wake up from a dream, before it claimed her life instead.
Not all vampires could do that. In the absence of a coping mechanism, some found themselves avoiding contact with humans entirely, hiding in their towers or the backrooms of their clubs. Then there were the wild ones. Raluca rarely came across them in her work, but only because they left their crime scenes dry, the corpse as bloodless as the room. The incidents were frequent enough, and she heard the horror stories on the news - frenzied, feral attacks, dismembered bodies found completely drained - but the detectives never needed her assistance there. There was nothing left for her to check.
It was the mortal murderers who liked to make a mess. Each subject was unique, to her tastebuds, but none had ever been quite so unique as this - it was as if tonight's victim had been a cocktail specifically prepared for her palette. Or a venom, designed to tear her mind apart. It wasn't something that she'd ever experienced before, and wasn't something she'd be particularly keen to try again.
Raluca headed back in, but pulled her governor aside. "Sorry boss, can I have a word in private?"
"Sure." They stepped around the murder scene, out of sight of the spatter, and into a side room. "What's eating you?"
"It's the victim... I'm pretty sure he's one of us."
"A vampire?" He paused, as if trying to get familiar with the concept. Humans only knew vampires as predators, a warning from the news, a danger that defied most conventional forms of defence. Raluca's colleagues trusted her, but they would never worry about her safety, stepping out to get some fresh air on her own - it wouldn't occur to him to think of her, or her kin, as prey. "Are you serious?"
"Deadly," she told him. "Cross in my heart, and hope to die."
