@darehearts gets a silly thing for the 616 cause clint barton is so nosy
So this is the CORNBALL that the Avengers' very own Carol Danvers was FUTZING around with. Clint takes it as his personal duty to assess the man; after all he's selected himself one of Carol's best friends (most of the time; superheroes were complicated creatures) and as big brother Avenger (he was like seventh out of all avengers ever).
CAPTAIN KIRK; he has read his file at SHIELD (he still has some of Maria's access codes). He's impressive, but Clint's not that impressed yet. The purple clad man squinting at him behind his sunglasses and making a HMM; in truth he only knew Carol had a boyfriend because Tony let it slip. ❝ I'm on good terms with Carol's bestest friend, and I'm sure she'd gladly help me hide your body. ❞ That's quite possibly the better of things he could have said but it's so rare his friends leave their significant others unattended around him.
#DYNAMICS -> DAREHEARTS -> From where I come from we take care of our own#i mentioned it and he's so dramatic like 616 is the most drama#clint vc: as self elected bestie of carol i have rights to beat you up :)#[ VERSE; 616 ] All he ever needed was to trust his own wings

[ INBOX / accepting ] ⸻ @darehearts sent in ⸻ ❝Clint? there's something i want you to do for me.❞ (you wanted angst? i have an idea here, just you wait— ST verse obvs)
CLINT ⸺ gets him searching for Kirk, eyes looking to meet the other man's. The security officer gives a somewhat lopsided smile paired with a look of surprise in his eyes. ❝ Name anything, I'll do it. ❞ It was without question, that's the kind of loyalty that his friends got from him. It's born of years being in space together, of the things that they had been through, a handful of crises that some may sooner forget. Additionally, Clint's found a brotherhood among the friends he has made. Kirk is a brother, and so he doesn't need to know what Kirk needs from him for Clint to go any lengths he needs him to go.

@darehearts // and this one is getting the insta reply (x)
It's well fought victory, and it's why he's mulling over leaving. He didn't want to take away from that; didn't want to be the moon casting shadow over the room; let everyone frolic in the sunlight if Clint's keeping track of this metaphor properly.
He bumps his shoulder against Kirk's when he teases him for the melancholy that was hanging over his own shoulders. He can't help the laugh as it was pointed out this wasn't a funeral home. A finger taps at the rim of the glass he's holding. Ordered out of habit, which after Nero he had to get serious about the rest of whatever life was going to be.
❝ I don't know looks like a funeral home to me. ❞ Clint muses with a laugh, taps the glass full of liquid, decides that he'll share a little. How wouldn't a bar be a funeral home. ❝ You know how when you want to join Starfleet, you gotta do an interview? ❞
Kirk's eagerness to cheer him up is appreciated, if he doesn't feel that he's truly earned such the privilege of throwing his authority around to talk to someone. The only person to talk to was himself and the newly named Captain has earned from Clint however his story and honesty. That and something about how talking about it will help him.
❝ I downed two glasses of gin before it because if I fucked it up; well, I could have the rest of the bottle and wouldn’t care. I thought it made answering questions easier; I am a better liar under liquid influence. ❞ That's probably a load of bullshit, but that was the lies he told himself to make sense of himself.
He holds up the glass in his hand, ❝ What is a bar to an ex-drinker? A graveyard. ❞ He looks to the all the glasses with liquor in them around the room, on the other side of the bar.
❝ This is better for me, but I still ordered the glass. Promise I'm celebrating, but getting use to this. ❞ This being watching others drink and get drunk, ans not joining them. They did it in fun and it's one night, or maybe one week, but he was different. That's harder to own, harder to look in the mirror and see his father looking back or Barney's words thrown in his face all over again.
Clint smiles though, it's hard but it's not bad. A little sad, but he'll get better at this sober thing. ❝ I imagine Captain is going to take a moment to get use to; or do you already feel it? ❞
He offers the glass of amber liquid towards Kirk, it shouldn't go to waste. He picked a good bottle for it to be poured from. Someone should appreciate the burn. ❝ A toast to whatever comes next and I promise that'll taste good. ❞

*hugs him like THAT*
@darehearts jim's the best; iowan alliance stands strong
A BIG BREATH IS DRAWN IN, one that expands his chest to the fullest capacity; no more air could possibly be drawn in. An OMFPH leaves his lips at the brunt force that sends him leaning forward. A warmth settles against his backside, between his shoulder blades, and then there is a weight at his shoulder. CLINT KNOWS THE WEIGHTS NAME. Words are at the tip of his tongue about to chide the Captain not to get any drool on his shoulder.
However, his words die in his throat when an arm goes over his other shoulder and the other goes around his arm. Jim's got good arms, he knows he's gotten him to work out with Clint whose probably twice as much as others. They are strong, and they pull right around him. The one arm that traps his arm squeezes so tight that he thinks Kirk's hand may crush a rib.
The hug that he is pulled in kills all jokes on his tongue, going still as he can. Shoulders relax and his hands go up. One to hold onto Kirk's elbow and his right hand clasps over the hand across his chest. Instead of letting his BROTHER go; he holds him him there. Jim's not allowed to stop now, the tightness at which he squeezes feels dizzyingly good. Another breath is taken in, long since accepting his need for this kind of affection shared; although it's not lost on him why Jim was hugging him in the first place.
❝ It's alright, buddy, told you nothing to worry about. ❞ Clint is still not letting go, taking the moment to just breath and let the adrenaline rush wear. A few pats to Kirk's hand, then he's clasping it tight. ❝ I had it; got all of you. ❞ The hug is definitely helping with his own internal anxieties; thinks he could maybe ask Jim to hug him like this on other days or when its all shades of grey?
Kirk's definitely not being let go of anytime soon yet. ❝ Your faith in me never fails. ❞ Clint says a little softer, barely a whisper because that's what friends and brothers were. Belief in the other gave strength.

"so you're the annoying guy who's been following me around for ten years?" (spy verse HEHEHE)
Had it really been ten years? Fuck, if that was the case than saying he's going to retire has become a water cooler conversation that has gotten way too old. No wonder Sal is always giving him that judgmental eyeroll. There's no way he was retiring any time soon, especially not with the shit that he's been keeping an eye. Carol's shit. Technically, JIM as he was known as wasn't officially part of his job description yet, not named at least, except by Carol. Since looking after Jim was a favor with no returning reward. It's the little things he does for his friends
(Except Jim's a big thing, a pain in his ass for ten years to keep track of, and part of that is because Jim's good at what he does. The other part usually involves bullets and not dying.)
He doesn't even spare the agent who admittedly looks ready to kill him. He holds up his hand to signal for Jim to pause, hold still for a moment. ❝ Mh'nm, hol'tha'thought. ❞ There had been a somewhat soggy looking paper towel that he had been eating out of before they had gotten into their kerfuffle and Jim had realized who he was. He had very barely managed to slip it into the pocket on his chest pocket.
He reaches for it, keeping one hand up to keep the peace and shoves the rest of the crumbling muffin into his mouth. ❝ You're the annoying one, making everything harder than you need to and almost dying a few times. You know how hard it is keep my cover, do my own fuckin' work, and make sure I'm not bringing you to Carol in a coffin? ❞ Clint chews around his food a little moment before wiping his mouth with the questionable paper towel.
❝ It's futzin' annoying; and please don't shoot me. Hospitals make me cry. ❞
#DYNAMICS -> DAREHEARTS -> From where I come from we take care of our own#darehearts#he's so non serious in moments like this.#imagine clint in jim's room or something. just eating a poorly microwaved muffin.#FIGHT. and clint's more concerned with finishing the muffin.#and then just “hi jim. you're the real asshole here”#his audacity#[ VERSE; SPY ] Whose side is Special Agent Barton on anyways?

MR. BARTON ⸻ who the hell does this guy think he is? ❝ That's Mr. Hawkeye to you. ❞ Given the situation, nothing would have been acceptable but Mr. Barton really wasn't something he goes by. If he had to go by anything. The mister part of Hawkeye was not as cool or as menacing as he thinks. He should have brought Bucky's metal arm, maybe that'd sell his whole intimidating self-elected best friend of Carol.
After Jess, always after Jess. He'd be in the dog house if Jess knew about that thought or this. Probably.
❝ She's an Avenger, so she's our sister. ❞ The Avengers were a large fucked up family of siblings, all mom'ed and dad'ed by Tony and Steve. Clint continues to square this Jim Kirk up, he wasn't bad looking by any means. Looks like he cleaned up alright, so Carol's not with a slob but he could still a prick. Had the fancy Captain title for that. ❝ Way longer than you, and I'll know her way longer after you. She was wearing reds and going by Ms Marvel, and I knew her in her Warbird days too. ⸻ So how'd you meet? ❞ He can guess SPACE was involved.
❝ nice to meet you, too, Mr. Barton. ❞ Jim’s voice is velvety smooth, devoid of any indication of surprise. the Avengers & their subsequent allies tend to be quite the ODD individuals, given their skillsets & life experiences. Kirk has read files on as many as possible in case he’d have to work with them one day, but still, the details become muddy given just how many there are.
the purple sprinkled in every inch of the man’s outfit was enough cue to to tell him who he was before Clint opened his mouth. ❝ i promise you that won’t be necessary, but it’s nice to know that Carol has such a . . . PASSIONATE set of friends. ❞ he adds, choosing his words carefully & deciding not to reveal that he & Carol are, in fact, MARRIED already. yes, he was drunk, & yes, they were off-world & technically, their marriage license is not valid here, but it’s an act he doesn’t mean to dissolve. he doesn’t know if such a fact would lead to his demise either. it’s why he takes a different route. ❝ how long have you known her ? ❞
#i facepalm at him. truly. i do. why is he like this.#he's just falls asleep to tv too often. makes him dramatic.#DYNAMICS -> DAREHEARTS -> From where I come from we take care of our own#darehearts#[ VERSE; 616 ] All he ever needed was to trust his own wings

Others would take Clint as a downer, or their expressions would paint with concern. They might suggest that he get out here or offer some kind of alternative, worry even that he's already breaking sobriety although most probably didn't know that he was trying now.
He may have been avoiding McCoy because he would 9be on his ass about the glass in his hand; it would have been coming from a good place. However, he wasn't being a downer. Not really, he was challenging himself and proving that he had the power to make good decisions and right choices for himself. Later, he'll talk to his friend about the challenge and wants.
For the moment, for the night; he's just settling into his second, fourth, ninth chance. Clint wasn't going to exclude himself from the celebration, not directly involved, but watching from near enough.
❝ Use and abuse, but I got 'ere. Proved I could make it. ❞ He mumbles, but Jim seems to get what he was saying. Clint's thinking about that, the aptitude tests and interviews. The answers he had spun, half truths and hoping that he wasn't caught out to be some fraud; he wasn't a fraud but he didn't believe at the time he was going to be cut out for this.
A certainty that he was going to wash out. That's not the case anymore.
Clint laughs when Kirk ponders if his poison was the adrenaline. That's always been his poison, ❝ I wasn't the clearest about what I was doing before all this, but adrenaline has always been my mistress. I use to do stunts dropping from a hundred feet, no, uh, safeties or anything. ❞ He's done a lot more than that, and Clint will still brag about that life if even the chance. Risk the chance of being found out he use to run with some the biggest con artists on Earth.
The new captain doesn't miss a beat with that reminder that Clint's not sure why he's denying that his life was getting better, turning around. I'd rather drink apple juice with you was not comradiery that Clint had ever known. While his brother and him may have defended each other from their father, but life earlier on had everybody survive for himself.
Such a sentiment isn't one that he has known, ❝ Honestly, a cold glass of milk with chocolate in it would be my substitute. ❞ A light suggestion if there are any futures where Kirk shares a drink with Clint. He's saying nothing on the proud comment, when he had announced how long and it hadn't been that long, he's managed to battle his liquor demons off.
A smile is earned with a laugh, glad that the glass doesn't go to waste, and Jim's boisterious becomes infectious, ❝ Guess I must'va been saving that for you. ❞ He comments as Kirk downs the glass in a go.
Clint was excited, he may not seem like it and that's a lot of bullcrap about Starfleet and sciences thar he doesn't care for. No excitement there, but he passed the piloting courses; its nothing like what he use to doing, but he liked it. ❝ Oh, I am. ❞ Deathly terrified, hated the idea of no dirt and blue skies; but he's always was one for challenging death. Space is death (and disease adds another voice), he really did spend too many nights at McCoy's.
❝ Definitely not looking back. Nothing in Iowa will be missed, certainly no worse place than Iowa. ❞
Jim doesn’t view his friend’s melancholy as rain on his parade. rather, he’s almost scared to ask what the cause is. the amber glimmer of the liquid resting idly in his glass doesn’t go unnoticed. doubt virtually bubbles in his throat, but before it can form into words stringing a question, he shoves them down in the depths of his heart.
he trusts him. although they are not yet as close as they’re destined to be in the following years, there’s an inexplicable, established system of gravity between the sun & the moon, both equally in need of each other. ❝ yeah, i remember. ❞ he confirms quietly, barely wiping the grin off his face with Clint’s commentary.
❝ it sounds like alcohol had its uses for you when you needed it, but that doesn’t mean it has to stick around forever. ❞ he adds as he recalls his interview. he’s convinced that the real reason they let Kirk in was so that he would shut up & stop being disrespectful, annoying & a proud display of ego with a basis in his aptitude tests.
those on the Enterprise, especially Clint, are not EMPTY people. not talent, no, empty hearts & minds there’s no such concept on his ship. holy shit, he has HIS ship. he reaches for the other’s glass slowly, his index finger drawing a circle on the rim, his grip gently undulating the liquid.
❝ what’s your poison now ? we always switch one thing for the other. is it the adrenaline rush of being in near-death situations ? ❞
clearly, they have plenty of those in Starfleet. there will be no shortage. his words are mere quips & that fact is revealed when his tone shifts, losing its mirth for sincerity. ❝ i’m proud of you, you know ? ❞ a shake of his head, he sighs into the glass he brings to his lips. ❝ i’d rather have apple juice with you than have this by myself, but i better not let it go to waste. ❞ with one motion, he finishes off the glass.
boisterous & bright, Jim continues to act like Jim. ❝ get excited ! we’re gonna have so much fun out there ! i won’t even look back at Iowa, not even once. i don’t think so. i'm not sure if you will either. ❞
