Favorite Horror Shows
Dexter season 4
Starring:
Michael C Hall
Jennifer Carpenter
James Remar
David Zayas
Luna Lauren Velez
Julie Benz
C.S. Lee
John Lithgow
When season 4 came out, I had only seen a few episodes of season 1 and I wasn't interested. Up until friends from the PoP!cast started talking about it every week and how great it was. So I netflixed seasons 1 through 3 and then caught reruns of season 4 on Showtime and I was hooked.
Season 4 however was the Trinity Killer and it's what hooked me into going back to the beginning and watching them again.
Kills and Blood Slides:
Trinity Killer: 279 Confirmed Kills
Dexter up til the end of season 4: 96
Shocking Moment: The end of season 4, the bathtub. Dexter's toddler son in a pool of his own mother's blood.
Okay, so Dexter is not horror, but he is a serial killer slasher and has a kill table and is one of my favorites along with the first 5 seasons of Supernatural, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Teen Wolf nowadays due to its beastiary content.
The New Yorker's Emily Nussbaum called Lithgow's characterization of Arthur as "so creepy Iâm still not over it" in 2011 and also said the character was "modeled on the BTK Killer".
Dexter Facts
Dexter has killed about 117 people according to the Dexter Wiki. He had 45 blood slides in his first box before it was destroyed and now has about 43 slides in his new box. There were also 20 or so victims from whom he didn't collect blood.
Series star Michael C. Hall revealed he was afflicted with Hodgkin's lymphoma in January 2010, but continued to work on the series. Most of his fellow cast members were surprised by the news, because he had not disclosed his condition during production. Hall is, as of mid-2010, in remission.
The name of the main character, "Dexter," is also a Latin word meaning "right hand." The implied complement is the Latin for "left hand," "sinister," reflecting his hidden dark side. In 2010 author Jeff Lindsay confirmed at a book signing in Edinburgh that he chose the name Dexter because it was the opposite of "sinister", reflecting the character's surface normality.
Jennifer Carpenter's Debra uses more expletives in any given episode than all of her male colleagues combined. AND WE LOVE HER FOR THAT
One aspect of the Trinity killer parallels the BTK killer. Dennis Rader maintained a very normal family life and was very active in the Christ Lutheran Church in Park City, KS. Among many positions, he was a deacon and congregation president and Cub Scout leader. Ironically, it was his use of a church computer to communicate with authorities that led to his arrest.
Director/producer Michael Cuesta initially approached a pre-The Hurt Locker (2008) Jeremy Renner to play Dexter, but Renner declined the part as he felt he could not play another serial killer again after playing Jeffrey Dahmer in Dahmer (2002).
Composer Daniel Licht initially wrote Dexter's theme song as part of the score for the horror anthology movie Necronomicon: Book of Dead (1993).
Dexter frequently uses aliases that make reference to Bret Easton Ellis books and their film adaptations. These include using "Patrick Bateman" (the main character from American Psycho (2000)) when buying tranquilizers and "Sean Ellis" (reference to both Ellis and Sean Bateman - from The Rules of Attraction (2002)) when seeing a psychiatrist.

Forever After All | d.r3
summary: y/n and daniel was stuck in a fake relationship but ended up falling in love with each other.
characters: daniel ricciardo x you/rader
other fics masterlist | other f1 fics masterlist | f1 imagines
*Â Â *Â Â *
as you entered the paddock with daniel, his personal fitness coach and his manager, you were keen to walk as far away as you can from the mclaren F1 driver. itâs not because daniel is smelly. no, heâs never smelly except after driving. but itâs because of the make-believe relatiosnhip that you were paid to show to public for as long as mclaren wants sponsorship from your dadâs company.
danielâs manager pushes your closer towards daniel. at first, you glared at her. alarming her that she was making you uncomfortable, but then she gives you a look. and thatâs when you realise that the photographers have started to surround you and started to take your photos.
instinctively, daniel reached for your hand to hold, in which you slapped it away once. you were so angry at him for trying to touch you when both of you agreed not to touch each other. good thing, though, you were wearing your face mask that the cameras barely caught the flame in your eyes.
then, you heard daniel hissing behind his face mask. under the owning of his hat, his eyes playfully glares at you. though through the eyes of the cameras, he was translated as if he is amused with your reluctant of holding hands in public, as if youâre shy to show your affection to public.
daniel grabs your hand once again. lucky for his ego that you didnât slap them this time. you let the uncomfortable warmth of danielâs hand embrace yours as you tried to keep the distance between you and the F1 driver. but daniel being daniel, he pulls you close and you spontenously hugs danielâs arm with your free hand to avoid free-falling.
daniel laughed. âyou okay?â he asked. you merely rolled your eyes at him, keeping your eyes elsewhere as you followed daniel walking hand-in-hand towards mclaren motorhome.
you hate every second of this moment. you hate how you have to prove these people that youâre dating daniel because, apparently, there are some who are still doubting you and danielâs relationship. so what if they didnât believe it because this relationship is a lie. once the contract between your fatherâs company and mclaren ends, daniel and you going to be nothing.
plus, whose idea was it that, in order for you to show people that youâre dating, you must show them skin contact? isnât it enough that youâre walking side-by-side with daniel? just being there, be seen.
the walk towards the motorhomes took forever that as soon as you arrive and out of publiceâs eyes in the safe zone, you let go of danielâs hand harshly. you didnât care if it hurts or if his heart hurts. you just want to free yourself from his grip.
âi swear to god, daniel! you pull that act again in front of the cameras, i wonât hesitate to embarrass you in front of them medias!â
instead of apologising, daniel laughed at you. his arms crossed on his chest while leaning his bum against the working desk. âwhat? câmon. canât you admit that it was fun to do that?â
ânothing-- i repeat! nothing in what we did and do are fun!â
âseriously, y/n. you should loosen yourself a bit. donât take them too seriously. this whole thing, is a game. relax and have fun with it because before you know it, you lose them and you might miss them.â
you scoffed. âmiss them? why the hell would i miss them? iâm never going to have fun with this, daniel! this is not a game! my business is not a game! my pride is not a game! donât you use me for your advantage.â
âthe contract says that we have to convince people that weâre dating because we want to-- because we love each other-- because of the pure love we have towards each other. i believe kissing, holding hands and being close is the way--â
âyou agreed not to touch me, daniel!â your voice shakes as you reminded daniel the promise both of you made outside of the contract. âand we agreed to be close for the cameras. nothing more than that.â
daniel licked his lips and stood on both of of his feet now. âyeah, but--â
âno, âbutâ. we agreed. if my father complains about the lack of my appearance together with you, donât say it was my fault. because we agreed.â
you left, not giving any more room for daniel to debate with you. you wish daniel understood how you hate every moment that you spend with him.
*Â Â *Â Â *
daniel is in austin for the us grand prix this weekend. it was in the evening, when daniel had done with his qualifying session, when you were done with your job at the office and you two meet up at your familyâs mansion. you have your own apartment, but since you have work in austin, youâre using the familyâs mansion for your stay for a few days.
you didnât invite him though. he invited himself after knowing your address. not like you didnât trust him to invite him at your familyâs mansion, but neither your friendship nor your relationship are genuine that you didnât think daniel deserve to be invited to your familyâs mansion.
but since heâs here, you brought him up at the rooftop where you usually sit to get some peace. there arenât many things that you can see from the rooftop, though, but the stars are very pretty today.
ânice spot,â daniel remarks once seated on the rooftop. âcomfy.â
âshut up or iâll push off the roof and kill you.â
instead of getting angry at your aggressiveness, daniel merely laughs. âhmm. the skyâs pretty. are they always like that? is this the reason why you love sitting here?â
you looked up and watch the blinking white stars on the dark sky. âpretty much.â
âyeap. i can understand why.â daniel smiled at himself as he too was enjoying the star-gazing on the rooftop of your familyâs mansion. looking at how at easy he is on the rooftop, youâre getting the idea that this is not his first time sitting on a roof.
âwhy do we still keep doing this?â you started to ask a serious question after some updates on each otherâs day. âif you donât like me and i donât like you, why are we still trapped in this stupid, fake, relationship?â
âbecause itâs what in the contract. thatâs what your father wants.â
âwhy do we have to be afraid of him and follow everything that he says? weâre grown ups, for godâs sake! we have our own businesses and lives! why do we have to listen to that old faggot?â
âhey, be careful what you call him, y/n. heâs still you father.â
âwhy do you still defend him when heâs the reason that weâre stuck in this arrangement? i mean, why us? if he wants the money so much, he couldâve worked harder than threw me into this mess.â
âheâs still your father, y/n. the blood that runs in your system came from him, too. plus, without him, you wonât have what you have now and mclaren doesnât have the money to continue be a part of F1.â
you chuckled at daniel. âitâs easy for you to say because you didnât grow up with him.â
âyou know that was never what i meant.â
âno. itâs totally what you meant. to you, heâs the perfect businessman. he works hard for his company, for his employees. he works hard for his family. no one actually counted how many times he was seen out with me. have you seen him with me outside of work?â
âmaybe both of you loves some privacy and he--â
âprincess diana loved privacy and yet people still took videos and photos of her with her boys.â you chuckled sarcastically. âhe was never a father to me, dan. he was never around. he never dropped me off to school. he never picked me up from school. he didnât try to connect with me outside of work. iâm just another employee in his eyes.â
you can feel danielâs eyes burning a whole on your body as he waited for you to continue in silent. he must be surprised with the courage that you suddenly have to night and be open to him.
âi joined a dancing team when i was 3rd grade, thought i could bring dad to see how iâm doing at school, but he never come. when i got this cut,â you pointed on your forehead, âben took me to the hospital for a stitch. ella was worried for at home.â
âwhat if your dad was busy? didnât he always have to travel for international business meetings? always making the deal, looking for partnership, thatâs how he keeps the money coming.â
you laughed. âi swear to god, those who believe what they read online are dumbs!â danielâs face falls when you call him dumb. âheâs doing them only for his name and reputation. plus, youâre working with a bunch of family men and you do notice them calling their families during free time, right? my father never do that with me.â
though daniel didnât come from a rich family, but he does have a family who supports him through his thick and thin. they were the one who brought him to the top and made him who he is now. they showed daniel the perfect definition of how a family should be.
âso, if it werenât him who helped to build his company, who is it, then?â you didnât answer, but gave him a knowing look that made him sighed. âyou.â
you shrugged, grateful that you finally succeeded opening someoneâs eyes on the black theory about your fatherâs company. also grateful for your employees loyaties and hardwork, tough times youâve gone through together. âwhat about your mom?â
âshe left when i was two. ella said she went to palestine for volunteer work. may her soul rest in peace.â
   âsheâs dead?â
âi guess so because she never came back.âÂ
hearing those coming from your own mouth, daniel sighed heavily as if he bagins to understand something. âyou know... if you arenât this uptight, i always believe that you are this funny and easy-going character, who never take things too seriously. a little bit like your father.â
âdonât say that because iâm not.â
âsorry. youâre not your father, but you are fun to hang out with.â
âiâm fun?â you pull a look.
âonly if you loosen up yourself. see, your problem is that you worry things too much.â
âtell me how could i not, daniel?â you stood up, feeling your anger rising. âi have a company to run. not to mention that i donât get paid enough. our companyâs financial status arenât promising and now we have to give you money! so donât tell me to relax now. i canât because iâm walking on eggshells, okay? i could lose the company if we didnât make enough money by the end of june.â
   âby the end of june?!â
âyes! by the end of june!â
âbut thatâs only 6 weeks away.â
you sat back down on the rooftop beside daniel realising that you could fall if youâre not careful. âi know. itâs 3 weeks away and i really donât know what else to do to keep the companyâs financial balance. and after discussing with my finance department, we think that itâs best to cancel your sponsorship, daniel. iâm sorry.â
âno, no, no. you cannot do that. zak needs the money. our team needs the money. we canât beat the top 3, but we need to be constant to be in the middle and we cannot do that without money.â
âsurely zak can find another company to support mclaren.â you looked away, wiping your wet eyes. and silently and steadily took a deep breath to avoid getting caught the shakiness in your breathings. youâre a bit surprise with yourself that you could lose yourself in front of daniel.
âhey. uh...â daniel rests his hand and on your shoulder gently. he waited for you to push him away, but when you didnât, behind you he smiles to himself and continues, âlook, this may sound cringey, but we need your support. not only fincancial support, but you. a support from you.â
âthere are a lot of people who support you, daniel. you donât need me.â
âobviously, you never see yourself as that strong, fun and easy-going boss, but some of us do and we like you.â danielâs sentences made you turn to look at him. âso i say, you try to relax and youâll see how easy you can get money.â
you sighed, relieved. what daniel said that night, somewhow, brings you the motivation to change.
*Â *Â *
and you do just exactly what daniel suggested you to do. you may need danielâs support, at first. you may need daniel by your side to encourage you to be easy-going, at first. and you may need daniel to start them first. but after a week, when you start to get comfortable with your new self, you do everything naturally. theyâre as if your second nature to be fun and laugh freely with mclarenâs personnel. they love your tranformation and definitely love hanging our with you more now, though at first, they were sceptical.
daniel kept his promise. he respected you and didnât touch you ever since you warned him that day, but something changed today. as two of you headed to mclarenâs motorhomes somewhere around the paddock, you linked your fingers with danielâs yourself. you felt him stiff for a few seconds, turned to look at you with an eyebrow raised in confusion, but there is this one word that makes him melts.
you said, âthank you for being my friend.â and thatâs just it.
daniel melts into you. he was smiling from ear to ear the whole journey towards mclaren motorhomes. the cameras love you and daniel starting from that day. vibing with your new atmosphere, you started to be friendly with the cameras. and that makes them love you even more.
there were numerous of times when the cameras caught you and daniel cuddling at your motorhomes. you didnât do that for the cameras, if youâd like to be honest. you love the cuddle from your friend. though both of you looked serious, but sometimes, you were only asking daniel if he likes chilli sauce in his sandwich.
there were a number of times when they caught you supporting and recording daniel while he was at testing and race. youâd show daniel the video and he let you voice out your opinion on his performance. he will listen even though he knows that you donât know much about F1 cars and tricks and techniques.
your interaction with lando makes them believe that youâre the best girlfriend. and now, they donât doubt you having a relationship with daniel because of the sponsorship anymore. they believe that you and daniel really love each other.
your relationship with daniel was the only thing that they talk about for the whole month, which means your goal was accomplished. and with that, you and daniel successfully helped your companyâs financial status because the more people like you with daniel, the more they support your company and the more they will buy poducts produced by your company.
the sponsorship contract between your fatherâs company and mclaren stayed strong for a few more months, until your father announced bankruptcy because of his own mistake.
*Â Â *Â Â *
âhello? y/n?â daniel was 14 hours away, but he managed to call you even with different time zones. he sounded fully concern over the phone after he reads the news online. âlook, i know you told me not to believe the online articles, but... tell me theyâre wrong.â
âno, daniel. theyâre right. um-- i, uh-- i failed the company, daniel. i couldnât work it out anymore so we decide to shut it down for good.â
âwhat, canât you sell it to other entrepeneurs? didnât you say that there were several of them who wanted your company?â
âthatâs the problem, dan. the company is not registered under my name. itâs my fatherâs and he made that decision.â
daniel, too, was annoyed with your fatherâs decision. âwhat about mclaren?â what about me?
âzak found a better and wealthier company. trust me, mclaren is in good hands.â
neither you nor daniel could believe this is happening. both of you worked hard to help your company blooming again once upon a time. both of you struggled so much that itâs as if daniel was your business partner rather than your father. no one knew about your struggle, not even zak. and you cannot express how thankful you are towards daniel for everything.
the call that night ended because daniel had to go to sleep and get some rest because he had a press tour the next day so he cannot be tired. meanwhile you, after the call, you were crying your eyes out. there were so much going on in your head. but the most important thing is, whatâs going to happen to you and daniel now?
though daniel never brought it up knowing that youâre still busy to finish some documentation regarding your company, but you bought a flight ticket to see daniel at uk gp a few weeks later. you canât bear the thought sleeping at night without a proper closure with the man who helped you, not only in your business but also to finding who you are now. you love everything about you now and all credit to mr. raicciardo.
you supported him through and through. you pretended like nothing is happening the first few days until after the sunday race, when both of you were alone that you told him your original reason to be here today.
âdaniel, i have to discuss with you.â daniel was playing with his phone, smiling as he watches the memes, but you caught his attention. he locked his phone and put it away.
âyou have something to tell me?â
    âyeah.â
   âabout what?â
    âabout us.â
âwhat about us?â daniel was still smiling, not having any idea.
   âum, about the contract?â
   âyeah, and?â
obviously, daniel had forgotten about it already. âyou do remember that our relationship is make-believe, donât you?â
with the mention of the fake relationship, danielâs face immediately fell. and thatâs the worst thing for you to see today. âoh. right.â
âsince the contract was terminated because my company shut down, i think this will be the last time we meet, daniel.â
âwhat? why? where are you going?â daniel sounded panic.
ânowhere. iâm just... iâm going to pursue my dream.â you smiled at daniel. it was small and delicate, but daniel kept his face straight.
âwhy canât we stay as we are now while youâre pursuing your dreams?â
âno, you donât want me as your distractions. iâm not going to be able to be with your all the time like how i used to. plus, what we had was make-believe... right?â
daniel kept quiet. he didnât dare to answer you. he cannot assure you how he feels right now because he too was confused with the deal. he had fun with you. heâs comfortable and loves being with you now. but herâs not sure either his feelings towards you is genuine or make-believe like the relationship. of course, sometimes, one of two people in the relationship was late to see it.
with that being said, thatâs the last time you ever saw daniel. also the last time daniel saw you. you and danielâs split-up broke the whole universe. though you wish people will stop talking about it months later, but thatâs just the thing that you cannot control.
*Â *Â *
   1 year later
you made a brave decision to study into fahsion as soon as you left daniel. though youâre still studying now, but having an opportunity to work with a fashion megazine to broaden up your experiences, leads you at the vanity fair megazine photoshoot today. being a fresh meat, they less likely to tell you every information about the photoshoot. and you werenât briefed and told about the celebrities youâre going to fashion today until pierre gasly came into the changing room.
ây/n! hey!â gasly knows you. though not that close, but you had interaction with him back at the paddock a year ago. âhowâre you? whatâre you doing here?â
âiâm good.â you smiled at him. âiâm working with them now. in fact, iâm going to be one of the people whoâs going to put the fashion on you.â
âreally?â gasly looks excited for you. âoh, wow! and the boys, too?â
   âum, who else are--â
âpieeerrreee gasllyyyyyyy.â daniel announced his arrival at the changing room himself, causing gasly and several other fashion desingers and make-up artist to laugh at him. âyou-- y/n?â
âhello!â you waved at daniel behind gasly. âyeap, great to see you, too!â
daniel looked as if he wanted to talk with you more, but you were saved when the director came in do a little briefing with the drivers. none of you want the photoshoot to turn bad.
not long after that, you started working. and the thing that you dreaded happen to be your task for today. you were in-charged to put the fashion on daniel so it was your duty you make sure that danielâs clothes and accesories and footwears look perfect on the camera.
you know daniel is dying to talk with you, ask about you, but the time limit makes daniel swallow every question heâs go in his mind. meanwhile, youâre succeeding at ignoring him and his look and body. sure, youâve seen him topless before, but never this close! and you can feel danielâs eyes burning on you, which makes you feel awkward while dressing him up.
you followed him when itâs his turn for the photoshoot. you have to be there in case of wardrobe malfunction because itâs your duty. another awkward moment for you, because this is your first time seeing him modelling especially with such fashion. and they totally makes you cuahgt butterflies on your stomach.
daniel looks as if he knows the effect he has towards you and he likes it. after the photoshoot, he waited until you finish with your work and came to see you. in which, what you didnât expect from him considering that you technically left him.
âwhy didnât you tell me that youâre pursuing fahsion?â daniel asked as both of you sat together in his car after buying a drive-through.
âi donât think itâs that important.â
âyou donât think itâs that important?â daniel sounded pissed. âi helped you grow your company and you didnât think it is important to tell me about your dreams?â
you shrugged, continued eating your fries.
âcan i be honest with you?â daniel was serious.
   âabout what?â
âwhen you said you didnât think it was important to tell me about your dreams, iâm hurt.â
âwhy would you be?â youâre lyring if you said that you didnât feel guilty, but you think itâs best to be emotionless at the moment.
âbecause, though our relationship was fake, but my feelings are not. and because i helped you get back the money you needed for your company, to support us. through that, you showed me how strong you were despite having no one to support you.â
âyeah, well, i lost the company so it doesnât matter.â
âit does matter! y/n, iâm sorry i didnât fight hard enough for you. i shouldnât let you leave me and i might be late to tell you that iâve got feelings for you, but i canât lose you again.â
you chuckled. âyou know whatâs funny? itâs been a year since we last saw each other, but not even once i donât go a day without you constantly on my head. but i--â
daniel didnât let you finish your sentence when he quickly catches your lips. like he said, he cannot lose you any more. and no matter what this time, heâs going to keep you and youâre stuck with him.

laurelâs top books of 2020
2020 felt like a pretty disappointing year book-wise (as well as in every other respect). I didnât finish my goodreads challenge goal, and I read a lot of 3-star books which were worth finishing, but didnât inspire me. but once I started looking through my list, I actually found a lot of books I really enjoyed. here are the top 15, out of 95:
Top 10
1. the witcher series by andrzej sapkowski
oh man. this was really the year of the witcher. I watched the first 4 episodes at the beginning of january and decided to dedicate my entire life to the franchise immediately. it would be hard to pick a favorite, but if I absolutely must Iâll go with the time of contempt.Â
2. how to hide an empire: a history of the greater united states by daniel immerwahr
absolutely best nonfiction of 2020. this book is so well-written, well-researched, and well-paced for the sheer amount of information it covers. itâs a very accessible read even if youâre not a historian, and I cannot recommend it enough.
3. the old kingdom series by garth nix
a reread, but it has been a really long time. I loved them as much as I did the first time though as a young teenager. just some really solid, creative, character-driven fantasy. like the witcher, difficult to pick a favorite, but Iâll say lireal.
4. gay new york: gender, urban culture, and the making of the gay male world 1890-1940Â by george chauncey
Iâd read bits and pieces of this but never the whole thing! that sourcework! obviously this is a classic in cultural history and queer studies, but it really lives up to the hype.Â
5.   archival quality by noelle weir
a recommendation from my roommate. this graphic novel has it all: ghosts, archives, amazing art, very relatable panels Iâve been using as reaction images...everything.Â
6. alif the unseen by g. willow wilson
I also read the bird king this year, but I think alif wins. Iâve loved wilsonâs comic writing in the past, and this novel was a great dip into urban fantasy based in arabic myth.Â
7. rambunctious garden: saving nature in a post-wild world by emma marris
I donât know that Iâm ready to preach marrisâs thesis from the rooftops, but this book was so incredibly thought-provoking and well-argued.Â
8. the city on the edge of forever by harlan ellison
in my opinion, this is the best star trek episode of all time, and the graphic novel is just gorgeous.Â
9. sense and sensibility by jane austen
I borrowed my momâs copy years ago and finally got around to reading it, and Iâm so glad I did! Iâm not a rabid jane austen fan, but this book was so enjoyable to read by the fireplace in december with a big mug of tea.
10. piranesi by susanna clarke
I was afraid this book was going to be overhyped, but itâs not! I read it in one sitting and will probably go back to it in a few years.
Runners-up
11. life on display: revolutionizing u.s. museums of science and natural history in the twentieth century by karen a. rader and victoria e. m. cain
museums? history? science education? yes, yes, and yes.
12. sundown towns: a hidden dimension of american racism by james w. louwen
this book should have permanently changed the study of midwestern history as far as Iâm concerned. even knowing about sundown towns beforehand, the extent of their reach in the midwest was shocking (though, Iâm sure, it would probably not be so shocking to the Black families that live/d near them). louwenâs evidence is solid, incredibly thorough, and well-explained.Â
13. kraken by china miÊville
a recommendation from a friend. took me a while to get hooked, but when I did, I really did.
14. why fish donât exist: a story of loss, love, and the hidden order of life by lulu miller
I love a good narrative nonfiction book and I love taxonomy, so this is it for me.
15. godâs red son: the ghost dance religion and the making of modern america by louis s. warren
Iâve read several books on the ghost dance, and I think this one does the best job of making the case for why its important to âmainstreamâ history.Â
bonus: the elegance of the hedgehog by muriel barbery
I canât tell you how many times Iâve read this book. one of my favorites of all times, but I did reread it in 2020, so it gets an honorary mention here.
